I like this guy, even beyond the build, which is cool. Between the little slug moment last video, the working pace, which parts of the build he includes, and the little wood stove moments in this video. Just a genuine guy showcasing his passion/interests in a very interesting silent format.
This is really proficient. I did construction and carpentry work my whole life growing up. And, now that I'm older and a little more mature I want to return to doing projects. Something like a Hobbit hole is what I've dreamt of doing since I was a kid. So, thanks for showing its doable!
You just made my day! I'm hoping to be mostly done by the end of next summer. When it's finished, I'll have you guys over for a BBQ, and you can check it out:-)
Great videos. Great content. I do have a suggestion from many years experience. Don’t encapsulate a wooden post of any kind unless you dome it and bring it a couple inches above grade.
Thanks, Dan. That's a good call! Thankfully, I only needed those posts up for 1 winter to hold the tarp up over the project. I'll be taking them down in about a month.
Now that you're done, they do make a block called a lintel block that has the notches for horizontal rebar already made into them. 2. Take your cord and measure to your termination point. Hold your fingers there and make a loop back behind that point. Tie that loop into a knot with the loop hanging out. Take the free end of your cord and go to your termination point and then back to the loop. Pull the cord tight against the loop and tie off a half hitch.
awesome work man, really loving your attention to details and how to build is coming along. also, how near is the hobbit hole to a road? are you carrying the block there ? concrete? keep up the work man!
Thank you! I have to carry everything from the end of my driveway. It is about 200ft of winding trail down a hill. I hired a concrete pump truck for the two large pours. They ran flexible pipe to the edge of the forrest where I'm building.
@@Odd-Lots I see. Can I give you some unsolicited advice ? ;-) Take into account that if you add 30cm and more dirt there - that will affect the roots. If you want to save the roots - the level of the ground should remain "as is".
Yes, you are right:-). My plan was to run another wall parallel to the tree, behind the facade wall, in order to keep the backfill dirt away from the tree and some of its roots. Any advice is welcome:-)
Did you know that if you miss your ration water/concrete about 1 to 2% you loose up to 30% of the mechanical propertise of the concrete, so it's a complete waste of material.

You’re a better man than I. Cold and rainy is more than enough for me to stop working for the day.
Lol. Yeah, they can suck. It rains about 9 months a year here, though, so you just have to push through.
It will be so so nice!
I hope so!

@@savannahlsteele Thanks for checking out the video:)
@3:04 what is that tool?
It's a Japanese block plane.
The question:
Will the space behind of this wall be filled with ground ?
Or maybe some small storage-room for tools and firewood will be there ?
Unfortunately,
Just dirt. There are roots of a large fir tree behind the wall. I don't want to risk damaging them by leveing the ground there.

@@Odd-Lots Fine solution ! 👍
finish product?
No. It's going to get a brick and stucco finish.
