My son and I sometimes have a movie night ( it's raining) and we've started this one because we can do it in sections. What a cast ! You're absolutely right. This film's special and of a time when Hammer etc made great , cheap exciting films . I'm remembering the Dennis Wheatley film with the enormous hairy spider trying to get through the pentagram ! Have you seen that one ?

Roy Castle was actually multi - talented -- good musician -- tap dancer and comedian too -- had an early death from lung cancer although he'd never smoked -- believed to have been through exposure when he played trumpet I think in clubs -- was probably only 60 ish when he died

The English Anthologies from the 60's and 70's were the best.
I agree, I don't know what it was about them, but they had to be from that time. I don't know what it was about the late sixties, early seventies, but that for some reason was the key time to make them.

What a pleasure to have stumbled across this classic horror. I am so tired of the new horror which seeks to shock rather than tickle the intellect and psyche. The newer horrors tend to have way too much swearing as if that is going to help the plot along. I I usually turn those horror films off whose plot is so weak they have to fill the movie with swearing for shock value and violent killings which appear to have an inane motive behind them. This has some class. Really enjoyed it ! Thanks for posting !
Today it is all about quick and cheap. Modern moves included. There is no incentive to write quality material as the bean counters want everything like yesterday and sell it for a quick profit. So glad these old movies are still around.

Intellectual horror is actually making a big comeback recently, with films like Hereditary, Get Out and Witch moving slowly and with much more subtlety. Profanity is a natural reaction to fear though, and I'm pretty sure people swore when they were scared even back when this movie came out, they just weren't allowed to include that in films. Violence and profanity aren't awful on their own, as long as it assists the story and isn't a cheap, quick way to simulate fear without putting the hard work in to build it up.

During the 90's as a child I would stay up after the witching hour to watch these movies. You never get these flicks on TV anymore. Great times!

As a kid I stayed up late every Friday night to watch the BBC2 horror double bill, during the '70s and 80s. And on a tiny, black and white portable telly, with crappy reception and the sound down really low, so parents wouldn't know I was awake! I think hardly being able to see or hear the movies made them even scarier! Happy days.
@@glamdolly30 yes they still had the hammar horror flicks on late night TV juring the 90's. I used to love Halloween especially but now they don't show didly. I dont watch terrestrial television anymore it's garbage.

They never seem to show great old classic movies like this on TV any more, do they? And don't get me started on boring reality TV and all the fake so-called 'celebrities' it spawns, YAWN!
I get all the entertainment I need from UA-cam, and there is a fairly good choice of movies here for free.
Have you used the 'Daily Motion' video sharing website? It isn't as big as UA-cam, but sometimes you can strike lucky and find a TV show/movie there that isn't on UA-cam. Always worth checking if you're looking for something in particular that's not here.
I found a favourite horror movie 'From Beyond the Grave' on Daily Motion, when it was absent from UA-cam. For some reason it always gets taken down by the copyright police, if someone uploads it here. Thankfully some kind person managed to put it on DM in two halves.
@@glamdolly30 yup I'm 33 and growing up in the early and mid to late 1990s they showed these Classic Horror films every Friday and Saturday night on the mainstream channels BBC 1 and 2 and Channel 4, occasionally you'd get one on middle of the Week.
Back when somebody predicting your death on a train was better than having to listen to someone's music on their mobile phone.

Its amazing. These old movies take me back to my room in the nurses home, watching movies like this on my black and white telly , on my ownfeeling absolutely terrified. I am retired now and that was back in the 70's where does the time go I🥺👻

My father worked at a nurses home in Crawley. Back in the late 60s early 70s that is.
As a kid I secretly watched the Friday, late night horror double bill on BBC2 on a tiny black and white portable in my bedroom, with sound down low so parents wouldn't know, madly wiggling the aerial to get the best picture, lol! I couldn't see or hear the movies that well, but they still made my hair stand on end, lol!

Wow what a find.... Christopher Lee , Peter Cushing, Michael Gough , a very young Donald Sutherland all we were missing is my absolute favourite Vincent Price. Nice man met him when I was 12. Not long before he died sadly he was such a kind man . Very polite to fans. Miss him still. But besides that we almost have a full deck of Hammer Horror Movie Kings . I love this and thanks for the upload.

I can recall seeing this in the theater in 1965 when I was 12 years old. This was incredibly wild stuff for its time. It has aged surprisingly well, I must say. I especially like the ironic twists at the end of each of the tales.
It's meant to be a bit like the Twighlight Zone I think

No it’s definitely the macabre just desserts type of horror, in all the stories people so bad things and by the end they get fatally punished for it

Excellent Amicus film from 1965. Great performances by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. The supporting cast is full of familiar faces like Michael Gough and Donald Sutherland. This has stood the test of time remarkably well and is hugely enjoyable. The British horror films from this period are fondly remembered by fans of the genre and its easy to see why. You do not need graphic violence and endless CGI just a good story and some talented actors. Brings back great memories of a bygone age. A good one and a really nice print too.
Probably saw this in my early teens (In the very early 70's) & the werewolf section really scared the $h1t out of me.......Great atmosphere & twist in the (werewolf's) tale...he he!
For sure the best of all horror flicks try the film the asylum very good three or four short films very good
Even the opening credits of this are better than the duration of most modern films. And then Christopher Lee walks in.
Even that cold, imperious look after having the door almost closed on him in the opening scene is class.

This films has one of the best opening scenes I have ever seen. The smooth introduction to our characters whilst they climb a board the train, we instantly know who these people are.

You just don’t mess around with that sort of stuff in Roy Castle’s story. Everyone should know that!!! As with the art critic story, I’ve always lived with the moral that if you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything at all. It’s always served me well.

Love this film, they use to show these old films on tv. Christopher Lee use to host horror marathons on the old sci fi channel...was truly tragedy when he died.
Sir Christopher Lee was 93, he had a very good innings bless him. A wonderful British actor and a classic English gentleman in every sense. Much missed - never forgotten!

There are a lot of Indians in the West indies. After slavery was abolished the Africans slaves would not work, even though paid, and thousands of Indians were imported as indentured workers for the sugar plantations. The population of Trinidad is today one third Indian origin and one third African. So Roy's accent was quite accurate.

Hard to imagine sometimes that Donald Sutherland had one of his "breaks" in the movie industry being part of the "Horror" industry at the time. I wonder how it felt to work with such legendary actors as Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee? Those were the days of great film because actors acted and the stories they do entertains people. Those were the days...
Donald Sutherland's first movie appearance was in the 1965 nuclear war drama The Bedford Incident, with Richard Widmark, Sidney Poitier and Eric Portman. Little more than a spit-and-cough part in that film. This movie was one of Sutherland's first significant feature roles.
Now its Donald Sutherland thats considered a legend and ranks right up there with Cushing and Lee........oh the irony of it all.....lol
one of the films Sutherland made he was offered a percentage of the profits or a flat fee......he took the flat fee and the film made hundreds of millions and would have netted him millions
Love these British "portmanteau" movies from this era where several stories are combined into one film. Remember watching this one Friday nights in the early seventies when UK TV would show old Universal movies followed by a Hammer or Amicus colour film in a double bill.
Hammer horror double bill,Saturday nights what I lived for as a kid,I use to get so excited by the cover on radio times when it was coming,use to watch in a bedroom improve tent with my sister on a black and white tv,what a memory.
I also watched the double bills in the 70s, absolutely loved them. I must of been 7-9 years old. Every when we went to school we told to write and draw about what we did the weekend. The teacher looked through my book and it was always a picture and story of the Hammer film I’d watched. I can still remember the picture where I drew Christopher Lee being staked by Peter Cushing, my mum was called into school to be spoken to about my staying up so late! I can also remember when I was about 6 or 7 hiding behind a cushion while terrified, but I loved it, think it was Dracula Prince of Darkness. 🙂
I grew up on the BBC2 Horror Double Bill on Saturday nights. The most memorable was Quatermass Experiment followed by George Romero's The Crazies which disturbed me that much as a ten year old I still remember that feeling of terrified nausea even now.
Al M I remember watching the Crazies as a child, the scene with the old lady and the knitting needles always stuck with me, can’t remember the film that was shown with it as the double bill!
when I was 12, I went to see this at the Saturday Kid's Matinee, at the Base Theater in Tachikawa, Japan. It was raining as we went in to the show. Middle of the movie, a tremendous clash of Thunder, and the lights (and the movie) went dark. Made this a really scary movie. (spilled my popcorn, too)
Watched 10 December 2019. The old ones are the best.

I have watched this film countless times. The beginning is already atmospheric with that quiet but weird music and the station dim and almost deserted, early-1960s, along with the metal gates and the wood panelling of the carriage. The locomotives heading the train at 4:06 and 5:21 are different. Dr Schreck is a doctor of metaphysics. To my knowledge there is no legitimate university in the world that offers a degree by that title, but with Peter Cushing I can believe in it!
Bearing in mind other moments in the film, he could probably be a doctor of whatever he wanted!
Not because its scary (its not) not because of great stories (not) it reminds me of my childhood when we thought these stories were scary. And Adore Péter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Salute to British Horror and. Suspense
Thw stories were good , I think . I never tjought horror had to scare me just have a creep factor and be entertauning . I haven't seen much in a great while that I thought was fun to watch . Horror is mostly dark and depressing , nihillistic even these days .
Saturday night just wouldn't have been the same without Hammer Horror pictures.

I'll tell you who is watching this in 2020, people wth a discernible degree of intelligence, taste & respect for th great British horror films wth great actors & atmosphere, excellent production which will stand th test of time ( & already has) long after th shitty crappy stuff that tries to pass itself off as horror these days.
Lee and Cushing are great enough. Sutherland just makes it all the better.

It's a very surprising cast - horror gods Cushing and Lee, plus American movie star Donald Sutherland, entertainer Roy Castle and Australian DJ legend Alan 'Fluff' Freeman (Not 'Arf!) That would be one hell of a fascinating train journey!
Aside from some great jazz from Tubby Hayes,this features a great score by Elizabeth Lutyens.She was an experimental avant-garde composer who's music can also be heard in The Earth Dies Screaming 64 and The Skull 65.Her stuff is striking,and unlike much 'conventional ' horror music.
Peter Cushing AND Chistopher Lee are simply great actors.So its no wonder they would make such a great movie

The Roy Castle/Kenny Lynch tale is inspirational - have to say that after experimenting with actual voo-doo drum recordings myself, nothing strange happened except making some exceptional music!
I remember watching this years ago when I lived in the U.K. I thought it was funny how the scientist drove away from the triffids house. Didn’t even take the owners with him. Lots of well known British actors and celebs in this one. Many of them have passed away.

These classics can never be rivaled by todays horror genre ..Cushing and Lee ...Price..among the immortal kings of horror...even today (2019)..these types of films then..60s 70s..especially didnt need the gore or super special effects we see now..the actors were more original and seasoned..the storylines and plots were solid...this era we will not get back...not in this format...it has its own homedown eeriness and mystery that new stuff fail to capture...even the movie sets were spooky and sets every thing in motion....i may be oldfashioned in mindset and opinion,but i think til this day,old horror films like in early 1900s ...such as Nosferatu. .original Frankenstein and Dracula..especially films with the real pioneers of the horror film genre like Bela Lugosi ,Lon Chaney,etc...captured a sense of suspense and fear that 21st century material can never match.....thanks for posting.!!🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥

@@johncolemaniii3716 I LOVE that actor. Always without knowing his name. I never see him as Alfred, I see him in too many other places, including smoldering, fascinating love interest. I'm sure it was him in an episode of THRILLER or a similar old TV series, the tragic story of a sea captain and his bride going to sea together to keep from having to part as other such couples do, a supernatural short story by somebody famous and great whom I also can't recall (a schoolmaster who wrote); my head hard drive is too full and cleans itself while I sleep I think. Anyway, he was a handsome sea captain and tragic lover in that, and great in everything. Looked so perfect taking her in his strong young arms on the derelict ship and saying, "Let's just go to bed."

Trouble here is that I was referring to Michael Gough and had him entirely confused with Scottish actor James Donald. I still wouldn't realize it if my PICTURES prog hadn't opened a little while ago and there sat James Donald among my kids and other family, looking just about a world too handsome to have been the man in this. But I still find Michael Gough handsome too. He just doesn't play it handsome. He damn well could.

Yes, love the Amicus portmanteau style (short stories linked), from the late sixties-seventies. I think this one ('Dr Terror's House of Horrors') has a rather weak plot and script, the ones that came after in the early 'seventies were much improved IMO.
My favourite of all time has to be 'From Beyond the Grave' 1974, which is sadly never found in full on UA-cam, because the copyright killjoys always take it down whenever someone uploads it. It has Peter Cushing playing against type as a flat capped northern antiques shop owner, and a fab cast including Diana Dors, Donald Pleasance, Lesley Anne Down, Ian Carmichael, David Warner , Ian Ogilvy and Nyree Dawn Porter. I recently found it uploaded in two parts on the Daily Motion website, if anyone wants to watch it for it for free. I think it has some genuinely spine tingling, scary moments, plus some humour to balance out the gore!
My next fave is 'Tales from the Crypt' LINK: ua-cam.com/video/ROmVaK3mP8c/v-deo.html (with Sir Ralph Richardson, Patrick Magee, Barbara Murray, Roy Dotrice, Ian Hendry and Joan Collins among the wonderful cast). The tale where a homicidal Santa strangles Joan, gets played in our house every Christmas Eve, it never fails to put me in the festive spirit, lol!)
And 'Asylum', also from 1972, LINK: ua-cam.com/video/cgu69x0ccIY/v-deo.html is another fab Amicus horror, written by 'Psycho' author Robert Bloch. Again it has a stellar British cast including Peter Cushing, Robert Powell, Geoffrey Bayldon, Charlotte Rampling, Herbert Lom and Britt Ekland. The script/story on that one is really clever I think, with a good twist in the tale,
'The House that Dripped Blood' (1971), LINK: ua-cam.com/video/OUZA_IBzj3U/v-deo.html is great fun too, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing are both in that one and Jon Pertwee does a great comic turn as a demented vampire! Oh, 'Vault of Horror' (1973), LINK: ua-cam.com/video/iF4zJuPQKo8/v-deo.html is excellent too - Anna Massey and her brother Daniel, Tom Baker, Sylvia Syms, Terry-Thomas, Glynis Johns and many more.
I recently found the last Amicus-style British movie ever made, here in full on UA-cam. Made in 1981, 'The Monster Club' LINK: ua-cam.com/video/lyHZQXt5mwg/v-deo.html isn't strictly speaking an Amicus film, but it was the final movie of producer Milton Subotsky, who was best known for his work with Amicus, and it featured many of the same crew.
'The Monster Club' stars the great Vincent Price, with fellow horror elder statesman John Carradine. Vincent's presence is really what saves it from being a so-so horror. It has a strong, predominantly British cast again, with a few cross overs from the early 'seventies anthologies (Patrick Magee, Donald Pleasance, Britt Ekland and Geoffrey Bayldon).
Though 'The Monster Club' isn't as spooky or cleverly written as those earlier films it has a few great moments, and a lighter, more tongue in cheek feel - especially in Vincent Price's linking sequences in the 'The Monster Club' - a nightclub/cabaret/disco. In fact it's worth watching for it's very final scenes, when we get to see the king of horror Vincent (now a sprightly 70 years old), boogying away with a rotund and enthusiastic lady! My God that man had style, he never lost it!
The French girl in the vampire story is beautiful and Kenny Lynch was so cool in the voodoo story.
I only found out just before Christmas Kenny had passed away (2019).

You have to read this! 59:03 - 59:13 When Roy Castle's character "Biff Bailey" is running down a street, he passes a poster advertising this movie, Dr. Terror's House of Horrors. Pretty cool. Even has his name on it.

WOW, Donald Sutherland has quite a good role in this film. Would you believe that he was 30 years old when this was made in 1965? It's always amazing which 'star's of the future' pop-up in these old movies and the quality of this film is 1080p, not like when I used to watch these Horror films on the TV's with the glass tubes. They were grainy and were badly cropped to fit on the old screens which were nearly square, the format known back then was 4:3 but that would be 16:9 in today's ratio terminology. This movie looks to be in the original Widescreen, keep them coming, please!

Old fashioned horror fun from Amicus. I love these movies - I know they’re tame compared to modern horror films, but they have a charm that contemporary movies have largely lost. Great cast too!

I was born 1992 and I am 27 and this movie holy shit all my fave old men and villain actors are as young as I am!!! This gets me right in the feels because all of them but I think Donald has passed on, if there is a after life I bet they all chilling out, also I love the bloody camera work!!!

I also enjoyed the camerawork. It was evident the moment the film started.
Undoubtedly this little gem of cinematography deserved to be remastered for our enjoyment.

Donald Sutherland would become an International star five years later as Captain Hawkeye Pearce in the movie MASH. The director Freddie Francis would win his 2nd Oscar as Cinematographer for the civil war film GLORY. Dr. Terrors Cinematographer Alan Hume would go on to RETURN OF THE JEDI and a Bond film among others.

I was ten when I saw this! Our local fleapit enforced the X-film rule for sexy stuff (such as it was back then) but turned a blind eye where violence and horror were on the menu. Well, it WAS Glasgow. Wonderful clear print. Many thanks for this upload. Next stop, Witchfinder General!

Cushing and Lee are so good in this. In fact I think this could have the best cast of any British Horror Film. The cast is just full of star quality. Cushing and Lee of course the horror legends then you have the Hollywood Icon Donald Sutherland, British horror regular and Alfred in the Batman movies Michael Gough, M from the Bond movies in Bernard Lee, then you have two legendary British musicians/entertainers in Roy Castle and Kenny Lynch, Alan Fluff Freeman and even Daisy from Keeping Up Appearances makes an appearance!
A true pleasure to watch, one of the very best horror anthology films ever made, with a brilliant cast and great stories.

Doctor Schreck gets extremely detailed stories just from flipping over four Tarot cards. Impressive the cards even give him the dialog of entire conversations.

@@Carly8Corday Plenty of movies cover their bases better than this. It's not bad, just a bit silly, as these older films tend to be. I appreciate thorough writing, and writers who take their time explaining every part of the story. Anthologies are a bit looser though, given the short and simple nature of each story.
For the most part, the vingettes don't scare me --- BUT --- I always get a chill running through me with that last scene on the railway platform. Never fails to happen no matter how many times I've seen this movie.
The bar scene at about the 40 minute mark with all the jazz music and singing brings back memories of the Rat Pack of the 50s - 60s - 70s eras. Great Flick. Thank you.
