Well, I remember being around 10 years old, curled up on the armchair on a rainy Sunday afternoon, watching this fantastic film. This old movie had a magic about it, you really got lost in the world of Jules Verne. In the same genre as The Time Machine, this really brought back memories for me. I'm 52 now.

I remember in Junior high school seeing the original “Journey to The Center of The Earth with Arlene Dahl, James Mason and Pat Boone! The special effects and the story amazed me as it has held up to the text of time.
My Mom took me to see this when I was 8 - because she knew I loved anything with dinosaurs. It's only now I realize how much she was willing to do for love. I love you Mom.
Amen~ I miss mine as well! Wanted to add- in her 50s, my S.Texas, country-gal mom took my two boys for an elephant ride at the S.A.Tx zoo! THAT took serious love also!
That's how I feel about my dad taking me and my sister to see every Herbie movie. He admitted when I became an adult that he would fall asleep during all of those movies.🤣
Jules Verne was a very big presence in my young life. My grandfather, Charles Verne Rodman, was named in his honor, and I loved a lot of his works, notably Around The World in 80 Days, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Thanks for sharing Brian. I'll be 51 in a couple of weeksl and can remember this film, The Time Machine & another good one I liked was The Land That Time Forgot. Anything 1950's sci-fi I also loved & still do; This Island Earth, Forbiden Planet, War Of The Worlds, Earth vs The Flying Saucers, The Giant Claw, etc.
Wow they sure took license making this film the way they did!
Same for me (without a family member being named after him!) - what annoys me about all the film versions of this story is first the playing around with the language and names in an attempt to dumb it down for us (in some versions 'Axel' becomes 'Alex', in this and others 'Lidenbrock' becomes 'Lindenbrock'.. here 'Gräuben' becomes 'Glauben' (the verb 'to think' in German?!) etc. They are small details but as a child I read and re-read this book so many times and I rolled those names around my tongue so many times... these details matter to kids... just as I could write 'Arne Saknussem' in the runes contained in the book... and could recite Saknussem's latin message verbatim ("....kod feci / I have done this") etc etc.
I didn't need it dumbing down as an 8 year old child, nor did I need any extra intrigue with the addition of other wicked characters for this story to engross me and make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. The far-off, slightly hard-to-make-out clash of the water titans in the book leaves it mostly to our imagination... cinema on the other hand introduces terrible rubber monsters with wobbly teeth... (sigh). Still, this was fun. I loved how this was a) made in Spain (filmed in Lanzarote by the look of it), over-recorded with the actors voices on top of them speaking English (presumably the soundtrack was discovered to be unusable so they re-recorded all the dialogue in a studio and dubbed it back on... and Hans, the young, strong Icelander of my memory looks like the star of a spaghetti western :-)

I read this book as a child in the 60's. I was house bound with casts on my legs, unable to do normal kid's stuff and one of older brothers introduced me to Jules Verne books and a few other great authors. My brother is responsible for my love of books.
I was 19 when this movie came out. Low budget film.... My Mom and I watched it. I miss her.?
It's good to see a version of this that I haven't seen before.
I'm an old fan of 1959 movie, 'Journey to the Center of the Earth'; have been since my early 70's childhood, and still today. It is a movie classic that is a central part of my DVD/Blu-Ray collection. However, to be perfectly honest, I never knew of this 1977 movie or version called, 'Where Time Begins.' While nearly the same story line, the added intrigue of the mysterious man and men found underground was surprising; that's a twist I didn't see coming. Still, the 1959 version is still my favorite.

I got the book as a Christmas present back in the 60's and remember reading it at 2.00am on Christmas morning in front of the fire whilst the family slept. (I almost caught Santa) Great book great movie. Happy times.
I was 25 and still love it at 70 years of age . The dreams placed on paper, kids now dont know how to dream or imagine such dreams or tales sin they dont read books any more.
I have never seen this version of Jules Verne classic book, but now that I have gotten into it I think it might turn out to be the best, especially with Sir Kenneth Moore as lead actor, he has played some epic roles in his lifetime and I am sure that this alongside “Reach for the Sky” will be one of his finest, thanks for sharing it. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴

This is a very good classic movie. It gives you a idea of how any adventures go anywhere and discover amazing things.
Yes, it's amazing how the girl was completely covered in mud, no water in sight, but miraculously next thing she's all clean with even her hair pristine!! Truly Amazing!!!
Finally,after more than 40 years!Let me explain.....
My parents took me to see this when it played at the local cinema.For years and years,the only memory I had was of the 2 monsters in the water fighting one another.I remember that scene because when I was a kid,I so fooled by the special effects,that I thought they used 2 live lizards that were actually biting one another and tearing each other apart.
Ever since than,my thoughts would sometimes go back to this film but the title had long been forgotten.I knew though that it was not The Land That Time Forgot,The People That Time Forgot or At The Earths Core.My parents also took me to those three films,at the same cinema that I saw Journey...I think though that when I saw it,it was called Where Time Began.
Last week,i was looking at the wikipedia entry for Juan Piquer Simon,as I had earlier been watching The Super Sonic Man,and I was curious to see what other films he had done.This one is listed as coming out in 1976/1977 and is also known as Where Time Began.This led me to suspect that it very well could be that movie I was trying to find since my youth.
So my sincere thanks to you for uploading and allowing me re live part of my childhood.

I had never seen this version before. I enjoyed laughing at the crude attempts at "special effects!" At least it didn't have the obligatory villain, that so many movies just have to have.
This is one of the better versions of this movie. Being a fan of the original with James Mason and Pat Boone, this one was pretty good.

Same here. Sir Kenneth Moore, the fellow who buys the books, and then who stands up and scolds the scientists, is the same man playing the Ghost of Christmas Present in the musical SCROOGE with Albert Finney. I'd know that voice anywhere. THIS is a half decent version of "Journey..." worth a watch. Monsters and effects are corny, but it beats the hell out of the later Ricky Schroder Peter Fonda mess.
The absolute BEST version was 1950's with James Mason, Pat Boone, Arlene Dahl and the fabulous duck that belonged to the Swedish guide. Special effects were great and I think Ray Harry Hausen did the dinosaur animation!

The soundtrack is brilliant, too. Especially the piece accompanying the scene atop Scartaris at sunrise. You can buy the soundtrack, it's by the great Bernard Herman.
This version is a poor second-cousin in comparison to the classic 1959 version starring James Mason, Arlene Dahl, and Pat Boone, along with other notables, which is one of my favorite all-time movies for a Saturday afternoon! Always a great adventure!
That 1959 version is worth watching even if it's just to see Pat Boone out-acted by Gertrude the Duck.

I saw the 1959 version in the theater when I was a kid, and except for being a small screen it was just as awesome when I saw it last week. Other than the cheesy iguana "dinosaurs", the special effects are still beautiful and astonishing -- real models and film tricks, no CGI crap -- the Bernard Herrmann score still entrancing, and James Mason's acting still a delight. As with George Sanders, you know James Mason is your social better the moment he opens his mouth.
Jules Verne was a literary scientific genius with wrote about the real world as described in his native Paris, France 🇫🇷.
He used some knowledge of science in his novels, but he didn't get this one right. We know that the centre of the earth is very hot iron core. Not some roomy cavern where folks or monsters might live with flowing water.

Great movie....always love a good classical story...."Journey to the center of the earth" not sure how many version they have made with the same title if the original author of this novel still live, he must have receive uncountable royalty..hahaha.. but I enjoyed every version of it...the latest one is 2008 staring Brendan Fraser...thanks for sharing this version
"if the original author of this novel still live, " Jules Verne died in 1905 so no royalties. As another film link rewatch Back to the future 3 there are a number of references to Verne's work including the Doc naming his two boys Jules and Verne at the end
The hollow Earth theory in Verne's time was as outré as it is today, but rich subject matter for his imagination.
This Journey to the center of the earth movie had a lot of monsters. It was a film full of adventure and not boring at. I've always enjoyed Jules Verne's book brought life on film. He was a man of vision a head his of his time.

I loved reading the books written by Jules Verne, especially Journey to the Center of the Earth. I don't know if any of you have wondered why the journey started in Iceland, but then, maybe there could be a way to the center of this planet. Scientists have always thought that the center is nothing but magma, but Jules Verne could have also had it right too.
if you check a lot of theories of a lot of cultures , you will see that jules verne took his ideas from them ... and those talk about sun in the earth and hot great lands after the north pole also that the earth is not round ... more like flat ...and all this writing are not even hidden only discredited as fantasies of the people from before...the only thing is ...why we believe some and choose to discard other..
i think because that is where the mid-atlantic ridge surfaces above the ocean and extinct volcano was the only route above water

Just finished, watching the Mrs Miniver story. It was wonderful. (Heartfelt).
I am so glad to hear people like it better than the James Mason one as I saw that when it first came out and I am 69The second incarnation was horrible but I have not seen this one. Hope against hope! Grew up on Verne I actually learned a lot about using the stars to navigate and the sky from reading Jules Verne, especially Mysterious Island.. He made it so simple for eager young minds.

This film brings back memories of the original movie. 4 regular channels and 3 uh channels. After midnight screen on most channels showed a pattern. I came from a large family 4 sis 3 bro and mom and dad. I tv and we all watch what parents wanted. Cartoons every sat morning. During the week Batman and robin, superman, leave it to beaver, the Jeffersons, and jj walker and i forgot shows name. First remotes were called clickers because they clicked. The other way to change the channel without getting up. Throw a sneaker at younger brother

I have not seen this version before, of the famous story by Jules Verne.

In most countries outside the US, this Spanish film was released under the title "Where Time Began" or "Journey to the Lost Continent."
Yes! I wonder why movies get different titles for US release? It makes them so much harder to find. "Day of Resurrection" was released in the US in an extremely shortened version called "Virus", but that version was so edited it had a completely different ending. But this one looks true to the Spanish original.

Love every version of Verne's tale. Kenneth Moore is a brilliant actor, if you want to see the greatest Titanic movie watch him in "A night to remember".

Another Moore recommendation: "An Englishman's Castle" - an alternative history tv drama. Scenario: late 1970s; Germany won the Second World War. (Moore plays the writer of a television series set during that war.)

They're supposed to be carrying enough food for 4 people for 60 days, and water, and all this scientific gear, which apparently fits into a backpack and a couple purses.
When you wrote that, I heard Bruce Willis in Die Hard "It'll be FUN they said..." (And the bad guy was Hans...weird.)

Kenneth More - still miss him. I love the little scenes like buying the stuff for the exploration.
Some scientific trivia : The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a massive undersea mountain chain that stretchs for thousands of Km under the oceans. I'ts created by the upwelling of very hot thick sticky magma from below the crust, pushing up so strong it pushes apart 2 crustal plates, causing a rift or crack in the crust.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is completely submerged deep in the oceans depths, accept for one place where it rises above the waves.
That place is Iceland. The only place on the planet we can walk up to and see with human eyes the Earths crust splitting apart.
Come, now is the time for our modern-day explorations of the center of the Earth and much more!
I loved all of Jules Verne's stories and amazed at his acute vision of the future, his genius was and still is amazing and inspiring, and I believe he knew the legacy he left to the world!

What a Delight! I didn't know of this film till I happened upon it here. Having read the book;"Journey To The Centre Of The Earth"; received as a Christmas gift as a child which totally caught my imagination, I then recall seeing the 1959 film version of Journey To The Centre Of The Earth starring James Mason, Arlene Dahl and Pat Boone on our old (but then new) Black & White TV which became and remains one of my favourite films. Jules Verne as a man of ideas and an author was way ahead of his time. Prefer the 1959 version but this is still fun to watch.
Of course one can't help but compare the 1959 film which was better but this one is entirely enjoyable and has charm.
Shame the girl can't act.

Swimming through a few thousand miles of molten rock was the most difficult section of the trip
The actors are great even though the story is quite rediculous. But it is very charming.
Amazing how the 1959 version has better FX, a better script, better acting and far better music even though it's two decades older. 😎
The girl fell into the mud and in the next scene she is completely clean, how is that even possible with no water.

“Viaje al centro de la Tierra” - Journey to the Center of the Earth from 1977. “Where Time Began” in theaters in the U.S. and “The Fabulous Journey to the Centre of the Earth” on TV in the U.K. Kenneth Moore passed away in 1982 at age 67 from multiple system atrophy (MSA) A Spanish film, so a number of lead actors had their voices dubbed (as can be easily witnessed).
A million miles away from the James mason version which is one of the best movies ever mad3 on this genre.

Great movie, with the same attention-drawing charisma of the movies "The count of Monte Cristo" and the 1956 "Les Miserables."
I think most of the special effects budget went on Kenneth More's sideburns! A great version though. I enjoyed this as an 8 year old, enjoyed it again now.
I have never seen this version of this great book. I've seen the one with James Mason, Ricky schoerder and Brendan Fraser. So far, not too bad.
The Saturday morning cartoon version around 1970 was Awesome.

Jules Verne may have been the father of science fiction, but his science was horrible and his ideas impractical. In the book, their magic lanterns work for weeks without needing more fuel. They also rode their raft on lava for a few hours. Even if the "semi-petrified" wood could stand the heat, they could still be cooked in less than a minute from the radiant heat.

I'm very impressed with the quality of the dubbing.
