François Bélanger Boisclair, unfortunately for those who get spam calls in America, truth is that it is not illegal to engage in telemarketing. Yet. But you can only go online and add your number to the do-not-call list. It isn't perfect, but it cuts down on quite a bit of calls. I still LOVE the "Sinister" solution of handing the phone to your toddler. Alas, mine all my kids are grownups. !

I do "block" robocalls, but it’s really a pointless exercise. Robocallers have banks of phone numbers; if you block one, they automatically call from another. In fact, whether or not you block a number, they automatically call from another. It’s just the age that we’re in.

it doesn't matter. Your phone know when a number is in your block list or not in your address book. It could be programmed to hand up (or not connect) those numbers, but they dont for some unknown reason. I think its because people aren't asking.

The federal do not call list is a worthless "Paper Tiger". Several years ago I had some maggot who called me as often as five times per day. I answered once or twice to try and reason with him but all he did was to talk over the top of me. I finally filed over fifteen separate written complaints against him and had no result. I finally waited forever on hold to speak with an FCC agent at the government website. I was bluntly told by the agent that " Oh, we never do anything about these complaints, we get too many of them." He eventually stopped calling. As far as I am concerned, all robo calling should be banned by federal law. Possession of spoofing software should be a felony offense and penalized with lengthy prison terms.

The "Do not call" list is a joke. Call centers based in India and Pakistan actually have the list and call the numbers anyway. They don't care about the law because there is no way for US and Canadian courts to enforce it on them.
Also, you missed the ones which simply go through an exchange number by number (xxx xxx 0001, xxx xxx 0002, xxx xxx 0003, etc.) There is no way to avoid those except by not answering.
If you don't know the number, don't answer is the only solution.

    • @condorboss3339
      @condorboss3339 6 років тому +3

      1) They are usually fake companies with nothing more than a post office box in the US. (If that.)
      2) To go after the companies, the FCC, ICC and other authorities have to file charges in the US or Canada.
      3) The US and Canadian authorities have no power to arrest someone in India or Pakistan. They have to go to a court in India or Pakistan and get them to agree to issue a warrant in that country. This is hugely expensive and complicated.
      4) Then they have to track down the people in India or Pakistan. Not easy to do in countries with a billion and 200 million people respectively, both of which have severe infrastructure problems.
      5) Then they have to get Indian and Pakistani cops to arrest the criminals. Even if they are honest cops, who do you think they care more about: The local thugs robbing people in their own streets or someone in a hidden office who ripped off a grandmother 10,000 kilometers away?
      6) Then they have to extradite them. Another hugely expensive process that may be blocked by some politician claiming the arrests are an example of “American Imperialism.”
      7) In short, it is too difficult and expensive to enforce in most cases.*
      8) The scammers know all this, which is why they don’t give a damn about US or Canadian law. Even if the US and Canadian authorities started the whole process, the scammers would just shut down the one company and start another long before the authorities got close.
*All this assumes that the FCC and ICC could be bothered, but they are tied up with important stuff like stopping you from playing poker online.

I have another way to deal with nuisance calls of all types, not only robocallers. This method may not work for everyone, but it has been very effective for me. I first created a few different ringtones for the various categories of people in my contact list, e.g. family, friends, colleagues, vendors, etc. and assigned each contact the corresponding ringtone. I then created a silent ringtone and made it my default. If someone calls who is not already in my contact list I don't get interrupted by the ringtone. If it is important they will leave a voicemail message. Robocallers rarely do that. On occasion if I am expecting a call from someone whose number I don't have in my contact list, I temporarily change the default ringtone to one that is audible. After such calls, I change it back to the silent one. This approach has helped me avoid 5 or more such calls per day on average for the past several years.

I had a kid call me 5 or 6 times in a row at 1:22 AM. I had call forwarding on the line so between calls I forwarded my calls to my local office of the FBI.
I left it like that for about 15 minutes.
    The calls stopped.
I then took my caller ID box to my local police station, by then this guys number was on my caller ID box about 25 times in 5 minutes.
My local police department called his local police who sent an officer to his house at 1 am.
    Never heard from him again.
This was in 2005 or earlier.

It kills me when I hear someone say "But how did they get my number?". . . They didn't "get" your number, a computer just dials numbers sequentially and when someone answers, it's logged as a "live" number, then sold to more scammers. I also get a good laugh when someone says "But I'm on the Do Not Call Registry. Why are they still calling me?". The Do Not Call Registry has the same effectiveness as a stop sign. . . Those who obey the law will stop; those who couldn't care less about the law will not even slow down. Scammers are criminals. Criminals don't obey laws.

Another tactic I use if I don't recognize the calling number is to act like a spook: A combination of numbers (such as "Four, four, three, two") is how some government agencies used to answer, back in the '80s. I've also answered with "This is not a secure line". It's amazing how fast some calls drop when you do this.

    • @UncaAlbyGmail

True, but, like any other good idea, the bad guys eventually get wise to it. The calls are all automated anyway, so they don't really care how many are made to non-working numbers. They do not pay for calls to non-working numbers, and they don't care if that costs the robot an extra couple of minutes.
It's like spam email. They send out 10 million emails, 9 million bounce, and 10 suckers bite. The 10 million emails cost maybe $50, only because they have to buy the list from someone. They'll make the $50 back on the first sucker. The next 9 are pure gravy.

The do not call list is a joke. It serves no purpose when numbers are spoofed like mine was. I don’t answer calls unless it’s a number of a contact, even local numbers. If it a real call they can leave a message.

Do not call list is a joke I signed up for that and seemed to get even more telemarketers. I say look into some of these spam blocking phone apps. There are some free ones and paid versions too. After that go to your custom greeting sections on your phone and record a fax machine sound...that way when they call (because they always do) they'll get a fax sound and check the number off considering it as a fax machine. Solved my issue with them.. It's war out there people and you gotta be one up on these companies.

  • @rwdplz1

I set my voicemail message to the electronic sound a fax machine makes when you call one. So a robo dialer calls, it rings 4 times, and it thinks a fax machine is answering. This has significantly reduced the number of spam/scam calls, and confused many coworkers.

I am far more annoyed by the sunuvabeech who hasn't had my cell phone number for 17 years now. He keeps giving it out to creditors whom he has no intention of repaying. They call; I ignore. Then there's the beech who was evicted from the house I bought (this wasn't disclosed to me, in spite of CA law stating that such things MUST be disclosed) who gives my street address to every dentist, doctor, and creditor she can. The bills show up at my house, and I call the business listed on the return address, informing them that this individual does NOT live at my address and the business has been scammed by the person. I advise them to contact their professional organizations and their employees to refuse service to this beech. I offer to show up in person to assure them that I don't look like her and have ample documentation to prove I am the legal resident of the dwelling. T

Why can't they simply make the phone app block ALL calls save the ones in your contacts list and for all else send them to voicemail. Or better yet, have them take a quiz to prove they are human. Most robocalls now a days start with the robot, who would fail the test or a peon who will hang up rather than take the test.

Those started calling my home from the bank about an account we don't own and they called about 5 times PER DAY. We blocked the number by the telephone's menu. Or also in my smartphone, the robocaller from another line offering a chip only starts talking if it hears me say a word, then it passes it to the human operator. All I have to do is answer, leave the phone on the table and go, the call will hang by itself.

All calls I do not recognize go to my digital answering machine.
If I recognize someone I haven't put on my phonebook, I interrupt the
      recorder and answer.
All others go unanswered; and most do not call back more than a few times.
The other tactic I use is a little device I built in my youth, called a lease buster. It creates a high pitched shrill sound. It gets them off the line real fast when they get that in their ear.

There is one way that I used about 1990 in Canada and about 2004 in Mexico. Most robocallers are unattended. I got a call about 5:00 PM. Instead of swearing or hanging up I carefully set the phone down. I checked occasionally that night. The next day I hung up the phone soon after breakfast. At that time they could not hang up first. I had stopped one of their robocallers from working the evening hours. Of course this will only work if you don't need the phone line for a few hours.

I've blocked their numbers on my phone but it doesn't stop them, they'll just switch to calling from another number. And honestly on some of them, I'm not even sure they are connecting me to a human. When I try to mess with them, they repeat the same exact phrases, like "I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" or "I didn't catch that, could you say it again?" I'm pretty sure it's a computer listening for a yes or no or whatever expected response and if it doesn't get it, it doesn't understand. And I'll get the same exact call from the same exact "person" (voice, at least) multiple times a week for months. No matter what I try, how many times I ask them to remove my number, how many times I tell them I'm not over 65 (and therefore don't qualify for what they're selling), they keep calling.

The police are more than willing to arrest people for being on either private property or government property even though you are on public property with a camera. Once the police are called by someone to report you the police consider you a possible criminal and need to be investigated for a crime or to be beat up if you don't do as they say; people have been even killed because they didn't lay down on the pavement or do exactly as told. . . some are treated as drug addicts even when there is no proof of drug addition or that person just left a medical study and is actually under the influence of some drug given by a licensed doctor doing a study at a hospital and these doctors have you sign a statement that you can't bring charges against them if you leave the premises and this person gets in a horrible accident and could have been killed after being hit by a semi on a major highway. The doctors doing this should be asked why do they release people from medical studies knowing an individual is under the influence of a drug they administered. . . and the patient should not be released for at least 24 hours???

I get between 12 and 20 telemarketers calling a day. They all have the same thing in common, They have knowledge of my injuries and they all have an Indian accent. Now I think they got my information from Canadian Pharmacy but I'm not sure. Call blocking does not work on them, and the Do Not Call List is useless since they are outside of the USA.

I answer, and don't say anything.

The national "Do Not Call" list is worthless. Once robocallers realized there never was a prosecution, they just ignore it.
The best I've found for landlines is Nomorobo, and that works 90% of the time. Any more, spoof caller ID's and autodialers make robocalls a pain.
On the i-phone, if you don't recognize the number, press the power button twice and it hangs up.

HELLO! earth to disconnected millennial! a great many people still have a landline as their primary phone. you presented essentially zero information about how to stop robocalls to a landline, esp one that does not have caller ID. yes, dear child, it's TRUE! not everyone lives in a city, and many rural telephone companies do NOT offer caller ID, or charge an exorbitant fee for it.

John Michael Bu... Hu... Hu... So this clip clearly doesn't have you as a target audience.
Here's an advice for you: if you want to avoid robocallers on a landline with no caller ID, DON'T PICK UP THE PHONE!

      @AdeleiTeillana 6 років тому +1

The Do Not Call list is open to landlines too. And I think it's stretching it a bit to say a "great many people". "Some people" is probably closer to the truth.

oh i'm sorry... how many people does it take to qualify as a great many to you? there are 300,000,000 americans. what's the population of NY, LA, SF, etc? do the arithmetic. there are more people living in rural areas than in major metropolitan areas. and OBVIOUSLY the DNC list is "open" to landlines. the PROBLEM is that the robocallers get around the law and call anyway. this video gave FALSE promise of how to block them.

John Michael Quick temper much? Question - do you get so defensive so quickly in real life or does hiding behind a computer screen make you bolder? According to the census bureau approximately 19% of the US population lives in rural areas, so your claim that more people live in rural areas than in cities is false. I don't know what percentage of the nation still have landlines, nor do I particularly care. I also realize that the DNC registry doesn't work well, however, your initial post claimed that his video was completely ignoring people with landlines, so I was pointing out that you were wrong.
What exactly were you expecting from this video? You don't believe the DNC registry works and you either don't have access to or are not willing to pay for caller ID... Were you expecting magic? What exactly, outside of those two options, do you think will stop robocalls from calling your number. It's not exactly fair to get so angry over completely unrealistic expectations.

I have used ATT Call Protect App, I know it can be downloaded to IOS phones, I think it’s available fir androids as well. It not only blocks them, but puts a future block on that number, plus gives you the ability to report them. It will usually tell you what kind of call it is, like telemarketer, scam etc. I love it. No cost to download and use.

My solution? Send all calls to voicemail.
If they leave a voicemail, likely it's legit.

No it more than likely it is still not legit. And sending it to voicemail let's them know they are calling an active line.

I let voicemail pick up, then have a "delete party" at my leisure.

When I answer a call from an unknown caller (I usually want to answer, because people I really want to talk to sometimes call from numbers that I do not recognize -- particularly a business call-back), I always say, in a not-quite-angry but tired-and-disappointed tone of voice, "Now, who could be calling at THIS time of day?"
Unwanted callers, robot or human, generally just hang up right away.
The only times I've ever spoken with a person after greeting in this manner, it was a friend or a colleague, who then chuckled and said "Heh. You sure have a funny greeting," and then proceeded with a welcome conversation.

Now I have to pay for an App because a stranger is calling me? No... I just don't pick up the phone if I don't recognize the number. They can always leave a message if they are not a robocaller.
