    "Yesterday, I completed a Half Marathon in 1 hour and 28 minutes. Since it wasn't a goal race for me, I decided not to push for a maximum effort. I opted for the Adidas Boston 12 over the Takumi Sen 8, Vaporfly Next 2, or Deviate Nitro Elite 2. The reason is simple: I find them more comfortable than the others, and they can handle all the paces I'm capable of running. The Boston 12 has quickly become one of my favorite running shoes, and I can't wait to use them in future races, workout or long runs."

    Larger framed runner here (205 lbs) and appreciate that kofuzi mentioned larger runners than him may like Boston 12 more . I love the adios pro 3 and got Boston 12 and find it to be a very capable training parter and like that foam supports my weight without collapsing. I have tried saucony speed 3 and deviate nitro 2 and prefer the Boston 12 for tempo mid distance workouts.

      Being 5’9 and around 190-200, the B12s have been my favorite shoe to run in in the last 3 year. I tried giving the Endorphin Speed 3s a try but I felt like I was bottoming out on the toe off. However, with the B12s, the toe off feels much smoother and more springy.

      This is the same story for me I am 6 ft 210 lb lean. I tend to find many “ daily trainers” bottom out for me. I think the categories mainly fit average running weight people.( you know what I am talking about ) but this shoe delivers for me .
      Saucony and the puma are also more narrow than what I am comfortable with . I am surprised the saucony threee was not more wide . Since they stated it was wider than the 2 .
      But I have found the Boston 12 to be my new favorite daily trainer. Also it matches my running style .

    Strange that the Boston 12 just doesn’t work for some people whilst others love it. I’m in the latter camp - best all round shoe I’ve tried in a long time and a perfect partner to the Adios Pro 3. Handles all my 18-24 mile long runs and 6-10 mile faster Tempo’s to perfection. In no way an easy day shoe for me…
    Deviate Nitro 2 has a more comfortable upper but no way near as fast and as good at holding pace for long runs.
    Takumi Sen 9 only works for short and fast intervals and track work for me.
    Only other thing I’d say is I found the Lightstrike Pro needs to break in for at least 20-30 miles…

    For someone who ran in Deviate Nitro 2 and Boston 12, I prefer Boston 12 for a variety of workouts, especially speed sessions and there are ONLY 7 grams of difference between the shoes which is hard to call one shoe light other one not light enough.

    After the Boston 9s, I was shocked what Adidas did to the shoe. The 11 was really bad. I nick named mine "Grey Brick" in Strava. Just used them to walk in and even that was uncomfortable. I was out on a run in the 12s thinking I made another mistake but right after 30-35 miles, I'm really loving them. It was like a switch flipped on. I'm a light runner (135lbs, 5'8") and really like them from daily to WO miles. Love the toe box room! I did get them discounted so that figured into the purchase. Hoping they lighten it up just a bit and make the forefoot as bit more flexible in the 13.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  11 місяців тому +3

      I think that’s a pretty fair assessment of what I’m saying.
      Yes. I want a Boston, but what we have here is not a Boston. It’s a good shoe. And I agree that it’s a shoe type that Adidas doesn’t have. (And I detest that 2023 has become a year where the names of shoes are all jumbled and we consumers need to reshuffle all the names) But I think that the Adizero SL should have just been an updated SL20, and this Boston 12 should have been called the Adizero SL.
      There’s still a gap in the Adidas lineup for a Deviate Nitro 2 type of shoe.

      @@kofuzi The difference between the adios line and the Boston has been confusing to me. I found the Adios 6 and Boston 9 to be quite similar, both on weight and feel. The biggest difference was the outsole. The Adios 6 outsole was good for tarmac etc, but not off road. The Boston 9 had an outsole that would work pretty good both on and off road. The Boston 10, 11 and 12 are bad off road, but differentiates from the Adios 8 with being heavier and more cushioned, more geared to daily training and longer runs.

    The Bostons that had Boost weighed 240 grams in 9 USA. They were fast but they didn't feel anywhere near like a goodbye boost. These Boston 12 are fast but they are not even close to the Adios Pro 3. I love the Boston 12, it is cushioned, quiet and agile. The 11 was a board with a feel similar to those classic adios whose foam was called adiprene+. I see that this Boston already resembles what a Boston was. Of course, like the Endorphin Speed there are no mixed ones.

    I didn't expect you were going to like this shoe, but surprised you don't think it's good for faster running since you feel that the Adizero SL can be used for speed training. I find the SL fine for slow easy runs, but the Boston 12 makes it a lot easier to hold a higher pace over larger distances.

      @@Clift0n Well to be fair, with his experience with the full range of Adizero running shoes, he probably has good reason for preferring other shoes over the Boston, especially at the prices it costs in the States.
      But the Boston seems to me like an excellent all-rounder, plus the durability is a big plus. I don't know how the other Adizero shoes compare in terms of durability, though I suspect the Adizero SL which I also have will not last as long since they lack the Continental rubber.

The Adios 8 has the dual foam midsole, the torsion system similar stack height, and similar upper to the Boston 8 and 9. I gave it another shot, and I never had the pain anymore and my km pace improved by 10% immediately. I realized that it forced me to run with better form, and no other shoe could do it to me otherwise. I have the Boston 11 too, but now I’m also 15kg heavier and I tend to just jog - it does the job, but it doesn’t feel “Boston” at all when compared to the 9.

      @@bkmk No I'm not saying that at all, Adidas state this is a middle to long distance runner for use daily training. If they name a shoe the Adidas Walk but state it's a workout shoe then it should be reviewed as such with a mention that the name maybe doesn't relate well to its use case. It shouldn't be marked down due to the name.
      Many of the comments Kofuzi makes do indeed relate to that stated use case, but the review has a negative slant largely linked to the name Boston. He mentions a couple of times that maybe he's being overly nostalgic (or something along those lines) and I agree.

    Totally agree. I bought one of the first BT12 in Bangkok when launched. It’s a nice pair of running shoes but the rods are too soft, the EVA foam is not that responsive, upper is not as comfortable as some competitors. One strong point is that it can support and protect my feet and legs really well in long distance run. But again, it’s not the fast training shoes.

    This is what I did for the perfect/painless heel lock - Switched the laces that come with the shoe, for flat laces (8mm wide + 150cm long). The ones that come with the shoes are too short for a runners loop/heel lock and if you do manage to make the loop, your upper feet is going to hurt, like so tight that it'll cut out blood circulation. If you want an amazing experience with the Boston 12, just switch out the laces. And always get the black ones. Trust me. Btw the Boston 12 is by far the best shoe Ive tried and helped me cut 1.5 mins off my per kilometer pace.

I’ve been using these to try to avoid the carbon plate for all my workouts and I have been pleased with them. If you loved the 8/9 these definitely aren’t the same-I had on an old 9 to walk the dog and man do they feel so flat and low to the ground in comparison to the modern high stack, rockered shoes. I actually have to hard disagree with Kofuzi on this one. I have been using my Boston 12 for everything from interval paces up to long runs and it handles all that kind of work extremely well. I feel like the rose colored glasses looking back at the Boston 9 are severely impacting his review on this one. Love the channel and content but missed the mark this time.

  • @RunNerds

    I had the Boston 6-7 (pre-lightstrike). For me, the Boston is always a moderately cushion racing flat. A little softness in the midfoot where I like to land, a pronounced bounce, and a very snappy toe-off. It was stable and with a decent weight. A perfect racing shoe for those who can't run a marathon in racing flats like adios 3-4 or New balance 1400/1500. Maybe its just me or runners nowadays are really spoiled with high stack and carbon plates.

    • @jsphsb
      @jsphsb 11 місяців тому

    • @jimoconnor8597

      I wouldn't say spoiled as runners just use what the brands put out. I still run in the Skechers Razor 3 quite a bit but love the Prime X as well. Shoes are just tools to be used as the runner sees fit. I don't like feeling the road everyday and beating my legs up so much if in a 60-70 mile week so opting for some foam helps. 60 year old marathon/ultra runner, just ran 3:25 with sub 3:20 goal in the fall.

    I respect your advice and love your channel. On this one. You are way off base on this review. I am not normally an Adidas guy, Been Nike and Saucony for years. I got the Boston 12 for a few of reasons: (1) I love the minimal structure of the heel area. I always loved the Vapor Fly 2 and its predecessor with hardly any padding up there. (2) I also love the minimal tongue. I do not like padding anywhere on the shoe that is not really needed. (3) Compared to the Vapor Fly 2 which is now more expensive than the VaporFLy3, the Boston 12 is a bargain. The other shoes you compare do not have the same minimal feel that this show has. BTW: I grew up in Boston: I know what Boston means and how important that name is in the running community. I think this show is awesome for the price and what it does. I have almost 100 miles in mine now and love it. I for once, have to totally disagree with this review. BTW: Been running since I was 11 (48 years now) I average 50 miles a week assuming now injuries LOL. And I am not biased on my opinion because I have the shoe now LOL. I have bought other shoes and hated them. Anyway, keep up the good work. I just have to totally disagree with ya on this one.

    I don’t think the Boston has ever been something to go fast in, purely. It was always a shoe that could do it all. Slow, daily miles. Fast intervals. A shoe you could do your entire workout in and not have to change shoes but not be sacrificing too much energy return. I think the Boston still accomplished this, as you stated, it’s something you can enjoy slower miles, and, if you need to, pick up the pace.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  4 місяці тому

      Which was your first Boston? My theory is that people that first experienced the Boston at v10 or later think of this shoe as an easy day shoe that can go fast. But people who experienced Boston at v9 or earlier think of it in the inverse: a tempo shoe that can go easy.

    • @jazzyjay4595
      @jazzyjay4595 4 місяці тому

      @@kofuzi I started with Boston 7 and wore 7-9 religiously before the super shoe era of needing to wear different shoes for different types of running. We just had 2 shoes back then: a trainer and a racer. Which is why I believe shoes like the Boston, kinvara, pureflow, DS Trainer, etc. were so popular. You could do all your easy miles, intervals, and tempos in the same shoe. I think if you look at the blueprint of the Boston 10-12, the purpose is still an all around shoe that takes some of the benefits of racing shoes and adds a little more comfort to it. Just they haven’t quite gotten the formula right yet.

Not quite sure what is causing this but it feels to me like the stability elements/ energy rods on the lateral side do weird things to me. I have experienced pain on two long runs in this shoe. I’m really enjoying it for a variety of runs from easy days to tempo runs and even some more intense speed work. The cushioning and responsiveness are perfect for me. The Boston 12s are currently on sale here in Australia (30% off) and I thought they might be worth a try. I will buy a pair for my son, who is still in Europe, but due to return in 3 or 4 weeks. I couldn’t see it in any other comments but surprised you missed that it’s Lightstrike 2.0, not the regular Lightstrike as found in the SL. Lightstrike 2.0 is a fair bit softer and adds a much better return in combination with Lightstrike Pro (in my opinion). Probably the first time I’ve had to strongly disagree with one of your reviews. The Boston 12 is a big improvement on the previous two iterations and is far better in terms of return and end use possibilities, especially compared to the SL (that I own but find way too firm).

Personally while the Boston 12 is a little lighter and softer than the 10/11 it is indeed far from the racer/trainer that the Boston 9 (and previous versions) were which I think is one of your conclusions. As odd as it may seem, I pair B11 and B12 because B11 feels to me kinda "stable" version of B12. Yes B12 is so less stiffer and erods popping is minimal. Anyway B11 suits me as a firm ride because I'm heavy and I hate squishy foams that bottom down.
    Another thought: seems to me Adidas tried B10 and B11 more like a tempo and threshold trainer , but the market wanted a do it all kinda shoe, so they softened it to became friendlier as a daily trainer.
    Not sure if they will get back ever to B9 feeling... this was my 1st Boston and sometimes I run with it.... it feels so harsh to my legs today... but its responsiveness and ground feel are still something. B9 and Adios 5 feels like kart racing to me now... very fun, loads of ground feel, but very tiresome.

    Hopefully the upper mesh of the Boston 12 has changed/or has been strategically backed with some kind of overlays where it used to suddenly rip ??

      Try it on. Some people love it for what it is, regardless of the name.

    I like your videos but don’t quite understand the logic in this one. You had an “expectation” of the it’s use case based on the name, and it’s a disappointment when you prefer others to this use case.
    So is this still a uniquely good shoe or not? Shoe reviews are already plagued with so many subjective opinions/anecdotes, and this one seems to be farther in that direction than most.

      When Ford brought back the GT40 (or the GT, as they had to call it due to a peculiar set of IP reasons), it had to be two things: it had to be a good performance car AND it had to pay homage to the heritage from where it draws its name. It wouldn’t make sense if Ford brought back the car that won LeMans and made it a really good 4 door sedan.
      That’s what we have here. A pretty good shoe. But it doesn’t live up to the name.
      Names matter
      Otherwise, call it the Adidas Terrex Flip Flop 35. Who cares if it’s a good shoe, right?

    A little baffled by the weight comparisons. I just weighed my shoes (all US 11.5) and:
    Boston 12: 10.0 oz
    Adizero SL: 10.25 oz
    Prime X Strung: 10.5 oz

      I go by stated weights when possible. I’m a reference size.
      I try to avoid posting weights after I’ve run in a shoe as shoes can lose/gain weight over the course of miles. But sometimes, stated weights aren’t available or aren’t provided in reference size, so I do have to weigh them occasionally.
      It in hand, my Prime X Strung v1 that I raced in Boston feels lighter than my Boston 12. They have roughly the same amount of miles on them

      I’m with you, I don’t feel like comparing weights on a $300 super shoe and a $160 daily trainer is fair 🤷‍♀️
      The Boston was always a trainer/racer we have entered a weird time where we don’t seem to appreciate the workhorse daily trainer anymore-unless it’s got a plate and premium foam with the pop of a racer. I don’t get it, I appreciate the less aggressive easy rider on non-workout/race days.

    I loved the Boston 8 and 9 (for that time period of less cushion) from the moment I tried them on. I tried the 12 on and they just didn’t have that comfort and promise at step-in so passed on them.

    Anyone else coming from the endorphin speed lineup to adizero sl2? I went on my first run in them yesterday and ended up with knee pain..
