I have been saying for sometime that the conference that becomes a viable competitor to the Big 10 and SEC will have teams across the country so the TV partners can have programming across all time zones. I see the move by the Pac12 a first step to create a western division for the smarter one of the Big12 , ACC or a combination of some of those teams.
Jim Williams is absolutely correct, but that requires the PacX to be able to outperform AAC in media revenues. I question whether that can happen, but if it does, ACC & Big12 are screwed, at least one or the other. Big12 not playing ball may lead to Big12 being the one chosen to let fail. Alternatively, it could be ACC that fails. But PacX beating AAC in media revenues is dubious. And on top of that, Tulane, Rice, USF are all prime ACC backfill candidates, so not only must you beat out AAC, but you must match new ACC as well.
That's the whole issue. Are Tulane and Memphis willing to leave a conference where they make good money for a G5 and go to a conference that doesn't have a media deal in place yet.
Big12 screwed up. Should have added WashSt, OrSt, UConn +1 (either Fresno St, Boise State, SDSU or Colo St or Memphis, USF, or Tulane). As it is now, Big12 could still merge with PacX / Pac6 and come out okay. If ACC blows up, they go to 30 or 32. They needed to do this all along anyway.
If the B12 wants to eliminate the competition they should quickly propose the 6-PAC merge with them to create a western division consisting of WSU, OSU, BSU, Fresno State, SDST, Utah, BYU, AZST, UA, Colorado, Colorado St. if they make it happen before July 1, 2026, there will not be a “poaching penalty” owed to the MWC, since it’s not the PAC-12 taking the 4 MWC teams. The PAC-12 could take that $43M savings and sprinkle it amongst the B12.
I think this is a really smart proposal but it appears that the BIG12 is waiting to see if the ACC falls apart to pick up schools and expand east. It still would be very smart for the BIG12 to take all 6 PAC schools.
B12 overlooked an opportunity that might end up hurting them. Adding small state P5 school might have added $31 but next TV contract this might prove to hurt them. California by far is the most populated state with the most TV sets. Too bad they didn’t add Fresno State. They may still be able to do a merger of the 2 conference but that definitely was an oversight by the presidents of the B12 IMHO
@@CouzsCornerSportsfrom what my sources told me is that Fresno St and SDSU were going to get invited but SDSU used B12 leaked the information to the media to leverage an invite or deal to the PAC which ended up blowing up. They also try to list they full share because well they are stuck up prissies from SoCal. After that It was supposed to be Fresno St and 1 maybe 2 PAC schools but it ended up being most of the PAC because every school panicked and that’s how SDSU got burnt.
Hey Couz. Lifelong BSU fan here. The Big 12 had a shot at BSU for years and opted for Houston instead. I hope the Bug 12 does well, but if BSU moving up hurts them, then it’s on them for not inviting the Broncos.
Every one of the extant PacX (Pac6) are prime Big12 targets … so this could be an incremental formation in contemplation of merger with either Big12 or ACC.
IMO, B12 should build OOC games alliances with Hawaii, UConn & Service Academies as well as other rival G5 schools. For example, BYU vs Boise State have a great rivalry and should play annually. What if 5-6 B12 schools play in Hawaii every 3 years? That would be a 13th game in those years, great trip for B12 fans & alumni and great sales tool to recruits. Trip to Hawaii every 3 years. Service academies get ratings. Play games near major military installations. UCF vs Navy in Jacksonville (Navy Mayport)( Houston vs Air Force in San Antonio); Baylor vs Army play in Waco (Ft Hood) etc.
These schools need to be on the PacX target list for fast adds to get to 8 (especially if they cannot peel away any AAC schools): Toledo Appalachian State Marshall Ohio Texas State LA Tech Liberty James Madison Costal Carolina Old Dominion Southern Miss South Alabama
The issue and challenge with realignment is finding a program that has a brand name, fan support and national recognition as well as a sizeable TV Demographic area that can bring competitive money to a collective pot. An example of this is Having multiple programs such as what we find in Arizona. 2 schools sharing a small demographic area… long term they wont prove their value bring their worth (yes they had a clause that allowed the to get money now but trust me that won’t be worth that money later).
Why not stop at 8 or 10 schools in the Pac and wait for the world to crumble in regards to the acc? Playing the long game seems like the right call as stanford/cal are attainable once that tv deal ends in 10-12 years or whenever the top 3-5 schools jump ship. Theres enough schools there to create a 6-8 team east coast division and really that conference would be a pretty close runner up to the Big 12 and certainly a power 4 conference
Great stuff Couz, been awhile. 😀 Lots of questions who the 7th and 8th teams will be. There is talk up in the PNW, that perhaps Stanford and Cal. due to what is going on with the ACC then another option would be looking at teams in the AAC.
The Pac 12 failed because having West Coast only schools in similar time zones doesn't get the audience reach unlike Big 12. ACC, Big 10 and SEC. Pac 12 needs to have the 6 members they have then look east in Texas being the hotspot. More time zones and better regions for eyeballs.
The PAC couldn't survive as a Tier 1 because of demo/cultural changes in the footprint, but it died as a Tier 2 due to delusion and incompetence. A new PAC should be the remainders after the Tier 1 consolidation is complete plus acceptable regional filler, that includes any of CAL, STANFORD and 4Cs that don't make the final B1G.
The pac 2 doesn't want to waste any more money on paying buyout fees for UNLV or other mwc teams. They'll likely go for aac or sun belt teams to get to 8.
@@TimmyPruitt166 they're not the same! The p2 has to pay ADDITIONAL buyouts to the mwc for each team that is poached ($11 mil each). Then each individual school has to pay an exit fee to the mwc to leave the mwc ($17 mil each). AAC or sun belt teams don't incur the additional buyout fees, and the aac team exit fee is only $10 mil. Sun belt exit fee is probably even less. Big financial difference!
@@CouzsCornerSports That's not what you said in the vid, or I wouldn't have responded as I did. The networks were fine with a 12-member Tier 2 BIG12, which I consider the max advisable for that level. If 2nd and 3rd level ACC schools are leaving, that means that the SEC and B1G are going to 24 each, which in turn means that KANSAS and some 4Cs are getting consolidated as well. In my view, that means that smaller, regionals for the remainders are even more attractive.
If the MWC “Ungrateful 4” were smart, they would insist on at least 10 teams in the new Pac-12. Why? Because if the ACC implodes and OSU/WSU get an ACC invite to a reconstructed ACC, the remaining Pac12 teams will have 8 or more members to stay as an FBS conference.
I believe the new members joined fully believing (with pretty good reason) that the pac 12 would be able to add 2-6 more teams in the near future and certainly before those 2 years are up. Remember the Pac 12 isn't diluted like the Big 12 and the aac. It is true they won't attract nearly as good of a team as the top echelon of the Big 12 but I'd certainly say not having that dilution gives the Pac 12 a competitive edge against G5 conferences at least. And i believe eliminating dilution of revenue is largely why those 4 schools dumped the MWC. And as it would seem Osu/wsu seem pretty picky about not diluting with fluff. Get the best AAC schools (Memphis/Tulane perhaps) and then unlv and someone else and call it a day with 10. I believe it's to their advantage to wait for other conferences to fall apart, at which point they have 6 more spots that aren't gonna be diluted with really mediocre schools

Then there would be a scramble by other B1G, SEC & P3&P4 to get invited to the super conference. This is what is happening now in the G5 world.
Why would oregon/Washington st want to go to Big 12. Big-12 lost their best teams and they almost their conference a couple years ago. Pac-12 will be better conference in football in 3 years. Pac-12 is Back.
CW loves the ratings they've gotten so far this year and is talking about expanding for more seasons.
