By the time we hit the States we'd been to Japan, Australia, and Europe... Jerry got me the gig, I'd been playing with him and Arthur on and off since '78; and I can assure you Syl was not asked to do the tour...
Barry!!! Hell yeah man! You guys kill it on the dvd out there in Hollywood... "Thunders, Nolan, Jones and Kane". You and Jerry's band is sick as hell too man!
Hi Barry..if you're still there..you know how they said George Harrison was the Beatles' "invisible guitarist"..you were Johnny's invisible guitarist...I admire your playing & stage presence...thanks for everything!
This is from the Ritz from 1987. He toured with Jerry, Arthur and Barry Jones. They play in Philly, Miami, LA and more places and they were great!!!! One of his best tours!!!!
Yeah , it's The Idols - Jerry , Arthur and Barry Jones , Far Left , on Guitar. Same lineup as the heavily booted LA show that came out on DVD from MVR , a few years ago. I never heard about Sylvain being asked to do this tour , but , I'm not surprised. I interviewed him several years, and he maintained that he and Johnny remained friends through it all ,but , he may have thought it was ...um ....a bad idea.
Thunders knock at Sylvain is a joke. Guess all that scag he did over the years mede him forget who taught him how to play the guitar in the first place. Funny cuz Sylvain was asked to join the tour and declined for personal reasons.
It most likely was a friendly piss take/joke, not a serious diss. And yeah Sylvain might have taught Johnny how to play. But who's most remembered today, who influenced more muscians (and punk icons) and who played lead guitar on all these timeless rock-n-roll albums (and made them stand out because of that)? Walter (from the Heartbreakers) was for instance technically a better guitar player than Thunders, but Thunders was one of a kind. One of those players where you just need to hear a fraction of a second of his playing and you instantly know who it is. Walter and Sylvain, as great they were, didn't have that. Johnny did.
He was like 34 not 27 haha. Thunders never missed a good, either sober or messed up he was always funny and still did the set and put on a good show.
