Crazy because I just heard of him last night and it’s like the player and teacher I’ve been needing all these years. I never really listened to jazz until recently . Now I’m obsessed . His spirit musta sent me in the right direction . 💪🧞♂️
There was a period of time where Pat Martino was the best guitarist in the world. I was so lucky to see him and Joey Defrancesco at the Toronto Jazz Fest. RIP to both of them.
I've been away from jazz for a while, just coming back to check out a Pat Martino video; this comment was my notification that Joey Defrancesco passed. What a loss.
I’ve been playing guitar around a decade, mostly rock and blues, recently I’ve delved deeply into the world of jazz and have become hooked on the genius of Coltrane, Joe Pass et all. Pat is my most recent discovery and I can’t believe It has taken this long to dig his style. His melodic ability, willingness to share his knowledge and above all limitless passion for music has inspired me greatly.
4:20 "This idea continuously came up (some seconds of the most beautiful tonal meandering) ... and the playing of it produced pleasure" That about sums it up :) So glad I decided to look up random jazz guitarists today.
He went through a lot and only got better. I am glad that he lived a long life and brought so many good things to music. Even at a very old age, he remained a musician with a fresh outlook and a willingness to move on.
When he first started playing i got so lost in the music, i was confused when it ended so abruptly. It transported me in a matter of seconds. So beautiful. What a legend.
I discovered Pat back in the 70's when I was in high school with Pat Martino Live! Been a huge fan ever since. He's a national treasure. His release The Maker is my favorite especially the track Noshufuru.
Pat Martino’s “SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORMS”: Both the Augmented triad (1-3-#5) and the Diminished 7th chord (1-b3-b5-bb7) are “symmetrical”; the Augmented triad is all major 3rds, and the Diminished 7th chord is all minor 3rds. Each of those “parental forms” are super-easy to find on the guitar, and they can be used to easily generate other chords. - By LOWERING any one note of any Augmented triad, you will create 3 Major triads; by RAISING any one note, you will create 3 minor triads. So that one Augmented triad can be used to find 6 other triads, 3 major triads and their 3 relative minor triads. - Now the Diminished 7th chord… by LOWERING any one note, you will create 4 different Dominant 7th chords, and by RAISING any one note, you will create 4 different Half-Diminished 7th chords. So that one Diminished 7th chord can “parent” 8 other 7th chords. - This is Pat’s “symmetrical parental forms”. Every guitarist should understand this aspect of the guitar that Pat observed and explained to us. May he rest in eternal peace!
This man has been the inspiration for more great players of the past half century than anyone, and he continues to inspire to this day. My best to you, Pat. Keep the light burning.
his Brain surgery was a miracle . i think the surgeons were masters and boost PAT's hippocampe .......because he has a fantastic memory and unbilievable command ! He was born to be a genius and Music took care and loved him !
A few years back when Guitar Player magazine had fine print quotes from great guitarists at the bottom of some pages Pat Martino was quoted as saying "there is a global war going on between mediocrity and dedication" (I think that's a correct quote). I've never forgotten that and consequently I feel like I never practice enough. Now, I'm sure of it!
Truly... and without anchoring his right hand on the guitar. The other amazing thing is how seamlessly he parks that pick between his index and middle fingers for the fingerpicking parts at 19:50
Musical consciousness is an interesting thing. What he is saying is that compositional skills are based on improvisational skills which is what the Guitar Ladder System does for players wanting to take a huge leap. I have been a huge fan of pat for a long long time and love learning from him.
Just bought this lesson: based on this video alone, transcriptions are complete, solid and accurate (for those wondering if this section is transcribed)...still wish truefire would develop an iPhone app tho
I'm not sure, but I think he's explaining methods you can do even somewhat mechanically, in order to feed or "seed" your creative process with new and different ideas, instead of just sitting and waiting for some mysterious inspiration.
Yes. That's what I got out of it. I remember distinctly a lesson with Pat about 40+ years ago where I showed him a short motif that I'd written down and asked him " What can I do with this?" and he replied, "Well, let's see now" and proceeded for the next 15 minutes to improvise a new composition while I just listened there spellbound.
A real bona fide Maestro of the guitar, R.I.P. 1944-2021
Crazy because I just heard of him last night and it’s like the player and teacher I’ve been needing all these years. I never really listened to jazz until recently . Now I’m obsessed . His spirit musta sent me in the right direction . 💪🧞♂️
@@coltonshanley1921 great to hear.

Lucky
He's my favorite Jazz guitarist forever. No one can touch his playing not even now.
Sad to hear about Joey Defrancesco's passing... Very talented, too soon also. RIP.

His playing is so beautiful it almost hurts
This is so right. You can not express it better.
Pat has an innate sense of harmony, and he was gifted with the delicate touch (perfect hands) and a quick mind/intellect! All said,,,, he's a genius.
What do you mean almost? Pat's playing and progressions evoke such emotion.
It DOES hurt! Amazing, it's just like a contemporary Bach...
One Big Mister Martino ,,great
Martino is always eloquent is his harmonic expression, but his melodic analysis remains decades over my head theoretically. A jazz scientist.
Pat Martino is a real maestro .

Anything specific you learned that you would say was pivotal for you when first learning jazz?
Brilliant! I only just learned of Pat. I hope his legacy can plant a seed of greatness in my own playing

The art of teaching by making sense. It's beautiful.
When he first started playing i got so lost in the music, i was confused when it ended so abruptly. It transported me in a matter of seconds. So beautiful. What a legend.
He will truly be missed ,a real legend .His music has and will influence future generations of musicians until the end of time .
The world's greatest guitarist and my all time favorite musician is wearing grandma glasses. Epic.

Such a great lesson, this is everything every guitarist should know.
I could watch this for days.

Idk why he's such a good teacher. I understand everything he's saying easily, and can apply it right back. His playing is everything...
Grazie to Pat and Truefire for this lesson!
Pat is a living theaching legend for all kind of jazz players.
What a brilliant, inspiring and incredibly deep person. Thank you so much, Pat!
It's a pleasure watching 70 year old Pat play and talk like that! He looks still passionate! :)
ive learned more about jazz in 25 minutes than the last 35 yrs of playing guitar.
A great book on this subject is "Harmonic Mechanisms for Guitar" by George Van Epps. Great post!
He sounds like a doctor casually talking about the human anatomy. Love it
I love what Mr.Martino plays. I have always loved what he plays. Just beautiful.
This is pure joy! It reminds me of J. S. Bach played by Glenn Gould.
Nikolaus Brocke I thought de same thing 😉
AGREED!!!
What a gift to all musicians and music lovers! Mr Martino is the real deal, just pure music......
That's the quickest 24 minutes I have listened to in a long time and I have listened again and again. Great and inspired Mr Martino.
I'm gonna learn this at all costs..
Kind of fitting he passed from this dimension on All Saints Day.....God Bless You Pat.

What a master. Absolutely brilliant.
Love his signature guitar as well!
Heard everything from Bach to the Beatles in his playing, amazing!
That is one beautiful guitar!
looks georgeous, shocking
$8000, I want it!
its designed for him by the maker
Thank you, Mr. Martino. You never cease to envelop my soul with beauty.
Wow! Chocolate tone meets complete mastery!
Pat Martino is simply beautiful. A wildflower
Pat, This is one of, if not the best presentations of harmony and theory i have had the pleasure of listening to. Thank you so much. 🙇🏻 🙏🏼
I hope he releases these on a solo guitar album. Parts sounded like liturgical hymns, others like Ravel. Gorgeous.
Great pieces:
6:47
8:31
19:51
Do you know the names of them?
@@jubnx2781 I guess it is just study pieces from "A Compositional Journey".
What an amazing Jazz mind and guitarist! Pat is truly a Jazz guitar legend. That guitar is gorgeous...wow!
I just noticed he's doing that all with a pick. Amazing.
Truly... and without anchoring his right hand on the guitar. The other amazing thing is how seamlessly he parks that pick between his index and middle fingers for the fingerpicking parts at 19:50
What a wonderful man.
Pat Matino plays some beautiful chords sounds more like he's doing a musical score for film or a classical piece.
Thank you very much for your invaluable lesson🙏 You are a great teacher as well as the guitar legend. I hope you be in good health🙏🌹🌹🙏
Brilliantly beautiful. 👌🏾👏🏾🙏🏾
Master Martino, truly you are a Master.
Che meraviglia! R.I.P. MAESTRO!
This is pat's most lyrical performance, rest in peace,Pat
Awesome in all regards. Thank you Pat, you brought joy and awe many times over and continue to inspire and impress.
Thank you, truefire. it's not enough to say that he's one of the greatest.......INCREDIBLE!!!
Pat Martino's guitar playing and His music, reminds me of the first time I rode in a Cadillac in 1969 ...smooth. Check out the album "El Hombre" .

Great man Pat is. Been a fan sense the early 80s. Him and Cal Collins are my favorite.
What brand of coffee do I get?
I see what you did there.
Again!
Have a seat and stady it.
14:08 amazing-makes me feel like every thing is o.k. like a sunny afternoon in the winter
Wow this is a very concise explanation of something very good to hear and to play. Your music in the past is magnificent. A great way to compose.
a musical genius and gift to the world

Awesome! As a Canuck, i particularly enjoyed some of the interval choices around 18:00
Agreed! I vote we revise the national anthem to something way cooler like this.
