Hey John, throughout your time as a PA have you seen any PA colleagues take long vacations? (1-2 months straight) I've been an international traveler all my life since most of my family is abroad and would hate for that to change once I'm in my career. Right now I'd assume the only way to take long stretch vacations is to work per diem gigs or be a part-timer. What do you think? Have you seen people in the ER's able to do this? Like someone front-loading all of their shifts so they can take a month or two off? I'd like to go into emergency med so hopefully if that's possible ANYWHERE I'd assume emergency is where it would be.
I'm in the same boat as you about family abroad and international travel. From my experience, it's near impossible to work as a "full-time" PA at a shop and get an entire month or two off consistently unless that was an agreed-upon arrangement before you started. I know of one physician who works "full time," who does just over 2 weeks straight and then travels abroad for about 6 weeks. I also know of docs/PAs that will do travel/locums contracts, work intensely for a burst of time, then take months off at a time. Your best bet would probably be locums' work or finding a larger institution with ample staff who may be open to accommodating your desires. I will say that before you do any locums work, you should focus on gaining experience and getting your finances in order first.

Do you stress over health benefits with all the swapping around? I have kids one has a heart issue so having stable health coverage is essential for me.
Hey Nick, admittedly, I don't have to worry about such a situation, and I can see how that would be one more thing to check off if you're on the job hunt. I will say my health benefits at all my prior jobs have been robust, affordable, and flexible with where one could seek care.
Hey, I got a question, I saw your video on how hard PA school is, and was wondering what type of student you were in high school? Just wanted to compare
I got very good grades in high school and participated in various clubs, track/cross country, and orchestra.
Did you start as a EM PA or were you in a different specialty and transitioned into EM?
I’ve heard from a lot of people that EM is pretty tough for new graduates as the environment is fast paced and the learning curve is high.
I started in EM out of school, but my first three years were in a slower-paced community hospital with EM physicians who loved teaching. I planned on doing a video on what to look for when starting in urgent care or EM as a new grad.

You can ask 10 different people and have 10 different answers to this question. I would say it's a lot easier than finding a job as a new grad.
John so did you resign or were you terminated from this position?
Neither. The ER staffing company and hospital system could not agree upon terms, and thus, the contract to staff the hospital was ended by my company. This situation includes all the PAs and docs at these two locations. I did not resign. I also was not "terminated" from the job as I am completing all of my job duties to the date required and was offered a job at a different location. Everyone is essentially walking away.
