  • Built in 1979, the 1000 foot long, 105 ft wide. While she isn’t the largest by physical size (that would be the 13ft longer Paul R Tregurtha) Indiana Harbor is the largest by capacity, currently holding the freshwater cargo world record of 77,500 tons. The ship itself weighs roughly an additional 36,000 tons, giving her a total weight when fully loaded of over 113,000 tons, or just under 227 million pounds, 226,846,000 more precisely) or 103 million kgs.
Seen here departing through the Duluth Canal in two (but eerily similar) departures in November and December of 2023, shot from different angles and locations around the city. She usually hauls iron ore and occasionally coal.

I still can't get over the size of these vessels. I do enjoy watching the crowds. It always seems a bit sad when there's almost no one on the canal.

It’s a very different atmosphere, not necessarily a sad one though! Can be almost peaceful, although it is more of an experience with a crowd, a lot more energy.

If stood on end, the ship would be one of the tallest buildings in the US. Glad you enjoyed!

Thank you! I’m sort of amazed how closely the two departures lined up, if you weren’t paying attention you might think it was the same one!

It just goes to show how destructive seawater is. A seagoing ship that size launched in 1979 wouldn't survive that long.
Also, I wondered if anyone can tell me why it has a rounded bow and not a sharp prow like sea going ship?

Yeah salt water is very corrosive, salt hauling lakers have similar issues. She’s actually still considered relatively young for the lakes. Three reasons why she has a rounded bow,
1- fresh water behaves differently than salt water, they might both be water but they’re physically very different. The hydrodynamic features of salt water vessels often work against them in the Lakes. The waves are denser and closer together, If you ride up big waves on the lakes like you do on the ocean, it causes a lot more strain on the hull, so they smash through them instead.
2- the lakes aren’t as wide as the ocean, they don’t need the fuel economy to travel thousands of miles across open water that doesn’t have refueling opportunities. So they prioritize cargo efficiency, hauling as much as they possibly can in a single run.
3- the Lakes have limited space in certain areas, a lot more confined, specifically the locks. Maximum visibility is key, plus a sharp prow takes up room more in the locks, and you loose that carrying capacity. Plus the docks are usually in tighter spots, they need the ability to turn sharp without tug assistance and fit into relatively small areas compared to the ship

@@jonathanellsworth21 Thank you that's really interesting. Its a whole different ballgame. A bit like petroleum fuel barges with more rounded bows on the Rhine which is my only nearest experience but way smaller.

    What does it do?

Hauls Iron Ore mostly, sometimes coal and other stone products on occasion
