    *tip the scale & tip the scaleS - both options are correct, however the second one (tip the scales) is more common (21% vs 79%).

      This is our own calculation. The number of occurrences of the first and second options in the entire amount of materials used (151 "tip the scales" vs 38 "tip the scale" = 189 total).
      In real communication between native speakers, approximately the same numbers should be expected.

      This means a certain factor that can change the situation in one direction or another.
      In the first example: Jay thought that Gloria was in a bad mood because she missed her son Manny. But when Manny showed up, it didn’t change the situation at all. Manny was not the factor that would tip the scales.
