I used to own a smog shop in San Diego about three years ago, things didn’t go well for me, I was very young and ambitious so I didn’t know much about the business I just got my smog tech license got some experience working in different shops and then decided to open my own station. To make the long story short I ended up selling the shop after a year because I ran out of money and I couldn’t keep it going. The best advice I would give to all new smog techs thinking about opening a station is find a place where the rent is cheap! Be patient, share a garage with a Mechanic, think of other options, just avoid paying high rent. Also try to find cheap equipment and furniture. Costumers don’t really care about the look of the shop they’re just looking for a place with good reviews and great costumer service. When I opened my station I spent a lot of money to make it look nice but it was useless. Just save as much money as you can you’re gonna need it.

@@denizuika8454 as low possible, you don’t need a lot of space; talk to the landlord to lower the rent for the first year or something don’t be afraid to ask things like that.

It’s a great and reliable video. Was facing this kinda issue back then with my emission test so I had to look for a way, which was how I came across Stray Admin who has got years in experience of helping lots of citizens pass they’re Smog test too..

Do you have to be a mechanic in order to apply for a smog shop or can you just be an investor who then hires smog technicians? I’m interested in a smog only shop what kind of pre-reqs are required for that
Hi, do you need a ard license even if you are opening a test only center? I am going to school to become a smog technician on June 25th 2022. I want to open a shop pretty quick after I complete training and after I get my smog technician license.Thanks in advance.

@@emissionexperts8715 Thank you for this link. I'm going to a school near my house today to inquire about the training and certification process. I live in the Eastbay, so it's important for me to go to a local school. As for the shop i'm looking to purchase, it's a nice clean shop in a busy area with plenty of parking. The goal for me is to buy and operate this shop and make my investment back and then hire someone to do the smogs as I look to expand services and potentially purchase another shop. If I can make a comfortable living doing this, then it would be worth it for me. I'm tired of the rat race and commuting throughout the state to try and make sales. I can provide great service at a reasonable price and that will be my strategy. wish me luck folks!
How expensive is the equipment?
Kara El depends on what part you are trying to purchase. The Dyno Can only be purchased used for around 5k. The BAR97, DAD and EVAP can be leased for a combined monthly of $700-$800 or can be purchased for around $25,000.00 all together.
Is there such a thing as a moble smog station in California?
Curious about this as well. Have you found out? I'm looking to learn a bit about this , is it possible to run a mobile test only for the smog service business
