Mahalo nui, not only for and from me personally, but hopefully others can begin a journey to incorporate hawaiian culture in their lives - while at the same time keeping the culture alive for the future and the world at large.

Mahalo Nui for this immersion Ōlelo journey. I am excited by this course since even tho I live here in the islands in Keauhou Kona I find it difficult to practice my Hawaiian 🌺 Ōlelo with others.
I am diligently studying Hawaiian using Duolingo but need something like this real immersive class to gain the confidence to begin to speak the Native Ōlelo of my grandma who was born in Kepahulu Valley on Maui sometime around 1890.
My Tūtū Kane was born in Hilo around 1909 and my Tūtū Wahine ran away with him to San Francisco in 1915 which is where both my brother and I were born during the 1940’s.
I have spent my life living both in California and Hawaii as well as other places in the world, but now I am home and as a way to fulfill my retirement days I am trying to lear to speak some Hawaiian and enjoy my Hawaiian heritage. Again Mahalo Nui

Q: If you're a mainlander and move to Hawaii...would trying to learn "too much Hawaiian" be considered disrespectful or respectful. If we truly want to learn because we're truly interested. And we're not of Hawaiian descent. Or should some one new to the islands just learn a few commonly used words like "Mahalo"?

By studying Hawaiian, you are helping to keep the language from going extinct. Please, go for broke! :-)

Good evening. I think the google translator is not treating the Hawaiian language well. What do you think about it? I am a student from Brazil and I am starting studying Hawaiian language and I am noticing some different words.

I am learning Hawaiian and I will say, I don’t 100% trust google translate unless the word is verified or it’s a word I know

If you know quite a bit of each language, google translate is a practical tool - especially when you are able to spot the mistakes. Between English and other European languages, it works quite well. But when one word has two different meanings, google translate can only guess which meaning is ment. There are some educated guesses if there is context, the more context the better, but for a language like Hawaiian that has so many words that have so many different meanings, chances of guessing wrong are way higher than with other languages.
And it is not really good if the two languages used are not English because it always goes via English into the second language. So, even when a word has only one meaning in language 1 and language 2 - when it has two different meanings in English you might still end up with the wrong word.
So, use it wisely and with distrust. ;)

Hawaiian language is a very complex language where one word can have many meanings depending on the context. If you are still studying Hawaiian, wehewehewikiwiki is a good source to learn more about words.
