Well balanced spinning rod for fluke/ Why light braid is important

- I put the New Jigging Jerks VRC spinning rod to the test and pulled up 7 nice keeper fluke! The rod is very light in weight, strong, but has great balance at the fore grip for perfect jigging motion with one hand even with a 6 oz. bucktail on. I was thrown off by the way the fish felt heavier than they actually were on this rod which makes it that much more fun.

Most of the other video guys I watch are all for the "lighter is better method". However, since I'm also on Long Island and have fished all hours of the day I can't say I regularly see a flat surface with a nice calm drift. So is the ideal presentation a teaser with gulp no bait, a jig head or bucktail with a gulp, no bait versus a High low rig that will have the additional weight component + its two presentations for the current to drag.
I always fish a bucktail with a teaser 14 to 16 inches up. Once I get over 1.7 mph drifts, I switch to a chicken rig.
In the higher 1.7+ drifts If you took the bucktail and used a jig head instead wouldn't that cut down the drag in the drift instead of switching to a chicken rig?
@@robertstorms5539 mass is mass. If I am using a 6 oz and it's not holding.... anything smaller won't work so a larger sinker with two small profiles is the go to. You want to fish as light of a sinker as possible, so that's why 1/4 oz teasers are best with less drag.
Nice job on the Fluke! Glad you like the rod
Thanks, we had an even better weekend with it. Can't wait to use it to target tautog.
You did awesome my friend! You were pretty hard on Chris and I get it! Thank you for sharing and Good luck with everything!
Yeah, having fished with him many times I want to see him succeed. It's very similar at work with guys. I find it hard to switch it off.
Id hate to be on that boat! Constant beliggering would get old quick!
Do you tangle often?
And are you saying that because Chris has 30 lb braid plus bait on his bucktail he will scope more? I understand you are using lighter braid but you are using a bucktail with gulp that also creates drag in the water.
Exactly. I see 10 lbs more braid scope next to me a lot. Knots count toward drag too causing scope.
I understand that but knots on 20 pound leader are a lot less drag then if he is using higher number leader. If I'm fishing fluke I'm using 20 lb leader, 10-15 pound braid.
@@robertstorms5539 his knots were very big. He ties multiple knots, I don't even know what the knot is he ties is called because no one else I know ties it. Also fishes barrel swivels.
Why are you cutting the gulps? Wouldn't it be better to use the next size down?
Earlier in the season, I used to because of the short bite we get sometimes. I want the tail to start right by the hook for those days. The shop I go to doesnt always have the smaller profile, but sometimes the smaller profile doesnt get as much attention.
Totally disagree with your teaching methods. Instead have the guy over for a beer, sit in front of the garage help him set up his rod's. Take him to Dick's or a tackle shop and show him what he needs.
Teaching is more rewarding than berating!
You have a good point. I told him at the end of the trip I would go over rigging with him out on the next before we leave the dock.
Check out YGK upgrade braid Todd! 22lbs and 25lbs test line. They have a diameter of 10lbs j braid insane casting distance and super thin. Tackle Waterhouse have bunch of them in stock when I checked last time
I'll check it out, thanks for the heads up. 🎣🤙
Is that a half gallon or gallon rumbler? Nice content as always!
Half gallon Rumbler. It's perfect
@LongIslandLethals thanks for the response, what lb braid do you prefer? I use 20lb here in Delaware waters do you go lighter?
10 to 15 is best for fluke/seabass. I plan on dedicating a spinner to 10 lb. Most of mine are 20 or 30 for striper fishing and tautog.
@@LongIslandLethals I have a Shimano Ultegra 3000 spooled with 20lb braid that I use for jigging tog. I just bought a spare spool and I'm gonna load 10 or 15 lb braid and use it for fluke and seabass. Figured it's a little cheaper to get an extra spool. Just pop off and on with whatever lb test you want.
@@mattt7839 that makes a lot of sense. I'm going to do the same. Great input brother 🎣🤙
What lb test braid were you using and what kind?
I have the spinner set up with 20 but just got a few new reels in the mail I will set up with 15 lb. It's Power Pro super slick V8
