    Minor correction.
In games like Bloodborne there are NPCs that do have levels and stats like player characters because they're using the same mechanics/animations as the player, so it's feasible that in Free City the NPC mechanic works the same way, since both players and NPCs use a normal human body plan.

    • @TheMichaelmyth

True and even though I haven't played it I'm pretty sure Shadow of Mordor has a leveling system where if an enemy kills you they get stronger. I think my friend called it something like Nemesis cam where they zoom in on them and start playing music.

    • @StellaHamms
      @StellaHamms Рік тому +9

I don't really think it can be equated to that. Those Bloodborne NPCs do have levels because they can fight back. Shadow of Mordor can also fight back. This is because Enemies are *also* NPCs. And in games like Bloodborne and TES, the examples given here, it is literally possible for an NPC to turn on aggressio nand fight back the player. This doesn't happen in an NPC that doesn't need to fight, though. Yakuza series has enemies geting harder, but NPCs normally don't have to fight, only specific enemies. Games like Just Cause and Saints Row would bump up difficulty and health for enemies, but not for peaceful NPCs.
This is a Role-playing game though, and an MMO where you can apparently attack anyone. So I assume the levelling system is there for certain NPCs like cops, but not exactly for these NPCs who don't need any fighting. Why complicate them?

Also, the way you break down every single flaw the movie has is insane! You leave no stone unturned. You notice something as minor as someone spitting, or someone using a portal gun to destroy the entire story. That level of observation HAS to be admired!
Sometimes you might drag a point a little too much, but that's really just a nitpick.

All of the references and 'hip' talk makes this entire movie feel like video game key jingling. It could've been more than that, the idea of an npc in an mmo gaining sentience is a pretty great idea, but instead they just made it about key jingling references in the audiences face so they'll giggle and clap like babies and love the movie simply because of that.

The seeing another world thru the blinds thing actually makes some technical sense from the game dev side of things. Games usually use pre made (baked) reflections to make everything run faster. If (which is not that probable, but possible) they forgot to rebake the reflection of the city in-engine in this specific place it could reflect something, that was there before.

So you’re telling me, the devs are doing all of that stuff of messing with the game world while the servers are up meaning they are breaking the experience for legitimate players who may be playing at that time. Why not take the servers down for maintenance, patch the game and then bring it back up again with a Free Guy skin for everyone?
Also, when the NPCs go on strike, the game is broken. It literally cannot run because things like quests and missions can’t start, because in games NPCs are your mission givers or triggers by random events. So when that happened, no one can play.
Also, the NPCs are established as not being sentient, unlike Free Guy, so why would they go on strike? They literally can’t, unless Free Guy’s code acts like a virus.
Also, how does Buddy have an apartment, he should be unloaded/despawbed/whatever the word is if he’s not needed or visible because keeping everything loaded at once is a way to make your game crash or run poorly
Interestingly, all these things were addressed in Wreck It Ralph. All the characters were established to be sentient therefore they could go on strike. Ralph did, and when he did his arcade cabinet didn’t work because he’s not there to start the game and act as the antagonist to Felix. Turbo did this, kind of, breaking his own cabinet and the other games he went to because he was foreign code. To the players he appeared to be a glitch/bug. He even acted somewhat like a virus, altering code to change NPC behaviour and his appearance. None of the characters did game altering stuff when players were around otherwise the game appears to be glitchy and broken and will be shut down

There are multiple times when i can't even hear what you are saying because your words start slurring together. When i first started watching your long form videos, i thought i accidentally put the video on 1.5 speed because of how fast you are speaking. I don't why you think you need to speak so fast when a normal speaking pace makes it so that you can hear what you are saying more clearly. It’s wild that the reviews for this I saw before watching it myself were not just positive but in too many cases, straight up glowing. The trailers didn’t intrigue me at all & at best I saw it as a PG-13 version of Crank. However it was much worse than I expected compared to the reviews it was getting. Not absolute dreck but was still a struggle to even get past the first 30 minutes. The first signs that this was a movie coasting on the idea of being a “love letter to gaming” without actually having equivalent effort was the very conceit of the glasses distinguishing players from NPCs. Why would a game with heavy customization have an essential element be connected to a face accessory that not everyone would even want to wear? Even accepting that, why then is it at all possible for that accessory to be removed not even just by another player but any random NPC? Toss in a plethora of tepid Walmart T-Shirt-caliber gamer geek “humor” & I had to tap out on my first attempt around where “Wrecking Ball” plays. This isn’t even a movie worth absentmindedly putting on in the background while I do something else. It’s too bland even for that.

Speaking of the big red out of bounds barrier, Minecraft implemented such a visually disturbing world border. It acts as an invisible wall, but you can see it and it has an animation. It's really only appealing to look at on a factions server because you know it's one area you're more safe in. I believe using commands to pass it or flying over the wall (if you can) results in taking damage over time, too. It only lacks the catapulting of the player backward into the permitted zone. The world goes on much further past the barrier.

This is a better video than the entire movie. Honestly, this movie's relationship with its target demographic is "peeing on us without the dignity of calling it rain"
I had another idea in mind for a better quote weeks ago and now I've lost it.
Well, Jack was certainly right about the "didn't *have* to cater to anybody" part, but they still did it anyway just to sell better and to integrate the greater gaming and popular culture into their movie specifically for fan service.
I would like to set up an experiment. Set a group of kids to do an escape room where they have to complete 3 rooms, one room is an Undertale game room where they get to play however they like 5 times, then they get two checklists in the second room, telling them to complete a series of challenges that either require them to do a pacifist run or a genocide route and then give them an option at the end of the room. Either talk to a dummy version of their friends or shock them to death. I bet they won't become sociopaths at the end, I mean the whole "video games cause violence" sounds like "all it takes is one bad day", and if you were to compare and contrast Mr. J and Bats, you would see that one becomes a serial killer who thinks killing is not only fun, but the only real reason for life, which is to end it's meaningless misery and to perpetrate it at the same time and just have fun with it, and the other becomes the embodiment of anti-crime, to stop any kid from having any more thugs kill their parents. Video games do not cause violence, they never have and they never will.

@@Master_Builder-es1lf I never said any of the references were bad. By old games I meant Pac-Man and Qubert. It doesn't matter who gets what references. The point is Wreck It Ralph is a great movie with a great story, unlike Free Guy. The main difference between the two movies I'm trying to point out is that while both have references to games, Wreck It Ralph does it in a natural way that fits with the narrative while Free Guy does it in a way that feels like lame jokes and product placement. The biggest example of that is when Guy uses items like Captain America's shield and a lightsaber to fight the buff copy of himself. Wreck It Ralph's references are small, simple, and serve a purpose. Bowser is in the bad guy meeting place as part of the scene showing that Ralph wants to be more than a bad guy. He wants the respect and admiration of the other characters that Felix gets.

_Free Guy_ hurts my professional software developer brain.
First off, and people are starting to figure this out with ChatGPT in the news, AIs aren't coded per se. They are learning algorithms that essentially use high speed brute force to determine optimal behavior patterns given certain inputs. For example, Stockfish is an actual AI designed to win at Chess with as optimal a proficiency as possible. Leaving aside what the Reynolds.chr AI was supposed to do (or if this movie is essentially saying that they made artificial life... at least _Digimon Tamers_ had the digi-gnomes, heavily implied to be shinto demigods, to finalize Shibumi's catalyst algorithm), what people mostly talk about when they refer to "AI" are their stored weights. They are _NOT_ manually written. That would take decades of brute forcing every possible action and reaction. When it comes to AI, I like to say that, if you want to create a humanoid intelligence so badly, the optimal development strategy involves a woman and nine months.
Second, the whole premise of deleting Less Cool Girl's original files is an even dumber plot point than you thought. The way most professional development of _any_ variety works, from _Elden Ring_ to _Doki Doki Literature Club,_ is that development work is stored on the cloud via some form or another of source control. Microsoft even has their own proprietary version because of course they do. To _not_ take this precaution would expose your development cycle to _apocalyptic_ risk if literally anything went wrong on a specific machine in any way. (Say, just for sake of example, some psycho took an axe to it.) The point of source control is to allow development to recover from critical failures in development via rebasing to the last successful push (and for the love of God, PLEASE implement some kind of continuous integration...) as well as to have multiple branches of code, usually at least on the level of developer code, live production, and some form of QA and / or staging, ideally both. Anybody who develops on live prod data, as this movie seems to imply, is either immeasurably stupid or so fatally desperate that they're screwed regardless. If you're lucky and everything goes right (and it _never_ goes right), you'll have to deal with merge conflicts on every non-prod branch. So why does this make deleting Less Cool Girl's code stupid? Because source control meticulously logs all code changes, both in terms of both the date and the content of those changes, including deleted files. Anybody who tried to do corrupt shenanigans with their code would get found out short of a catastrophic server purge (at which point you're looking at spending the next 1-3 two-week development cycles trying to get everything back to where it was; PLEASE tell me that the writers were not implying a waterfall development methodology was being used for a _presently-live MMORPG_ for f's sake...) and simply "deleting the data" would not even come close to covering up criminal culpability. Covering up crooked software development takes a little more than a fire axe. (That said, if Waititi saw this eventuality as even remotely possible, why does he not have a killswitch that can instantly short the entire system? Cyber criminals already do this. It's basically a more holistic and functional implementation of the idea behind "when I die, delete my browser history".) That sort of thing is biting Twitter in the ass in real life right now.
And now, for something you correctly eluded to but didn't have enough detail on, the hidden level. I was operating under the presumption that Discount GTA was essentially being piggybacked off the original game's core engine. That code would just be logic. So why did the UI components appear in any way in Free City at all? Did Less Cool Girl literally tightly hard-couple the AI to the UI? (If so, she must've been fired for gross incompetence.) Even if so, it shouldn't have taken long for other developers to decouple that code and wrap it in a class library more conveniently usable by the rest of the team. Anything relevant enough to visibly tie the code to the original game would be long gone. Less Cool Girl should've had to dive into a Tron-eaque subdimension to find her files, if they could be found at all. What wound up happening instead is more like _Sword Art Online_ as envisioned by a tech-illiterate boomer.
Incidentally, if Less Cool Girl was an employee at Taiga Waititi's company (hell if I'm watching that movie again), she likely doesn't even own that code she's claiming. It is _extremely_ common boilerplate in software developer contracts that anything you code for your employing company belongs to them. (I'd know. Just a year ago, I built my boss a website automation testing engine from scratch. And just a few weeks ago, I was working on a high-volume CSV parser / report writer. It didn't wind up getting used, but that code still belongs to the company nonetheless.) Less Cool Girl can't claim ownership or that it was stolen. Repurposing developed code for other purposes is a pretty common practice, especially if the code is any good. In fact, most code is written for the express purpose of being a black-boxed tool for other development. Waititi is fully within his rights to do so. Who cares if he didn't make Less Cool Girl's lame nature sandbox? That's for the designers to decide upon, which, as we are led to believe, is Waititi. He did nothing wrong, neither legally nor ethically. Less Cool Girl just inexplicably felt entitled to dictate the use of her code and threw a tantrum when she didn't get her eco-fappy walking simulator for Californian hipsters that nobody in real life (not even the Californian hipsters) would play.

fun fact the portal gun can only work on surfaces made with moon dust hence the colour and the ending to portal 2 and the gel in portal 2.

4:32 You’re acting like this isn’t a video game, which you can’t do in this movie which is about living in a video game. There are plenty of hazards that exist in video games that don’t spawn until the player (or in this case NPC) crosses the threshold (this can act as a world barrier or a dungeon trap), and it’s very obviously implied throughout the movie that this is one of those hazards. So, with that in mind, Guy couldn’t have seen the train coming because it simply didn’t exist until he stepped onto the railroad. You cannot expect video games to be completely internally consistent. For a train to be running at all times in a game like this would take a massive amount of CPU resources, and it’s also possible that the train only exists for Guy as a client side trap rather than a server side (yes, I’m aware Guy is on the server, but the world operates as though Guy were using a player character so my point still stands).
6:35 Several video games have glitch/crash failsafes that eliminate a problematic process or entity that may pose a threat to the game’s (or system’s) integrity. In Zelda BOTW, this is the blood moon; yes the blood moon is a timed event, but there is a secondary type of blood moon that not everyone knows about, the panic blood moon. The panic blood moon is an event triggered when more than 90% of the game’s allotted RAM is used up, triggering a blood moon allows the game to reset and clear its RAM so that it doesn’t crash or break. The incident here with the coffee could be exactly that; Guy ordered a coffee that deviated from the script, and the game probably started freaking out with a “code red” because it received an input that didn’t have a designated output, so that makes Guy a threat, but obviously you can’t reset the entire game for this, so they send in a tank to temporarily despawn the bug and reset the character to an unglitched state. Again, you cannot ask that everything in a video game makes sense, it’s not a book or a movie where it can do whatever it wants, it’s a compilation of instructions with failsafes. So far, both of these events are easily explainable as failsafes, and are clearly implied to be as such. If your argument boils down to “it doesn’t make sense in the physics! It can’t just happen!” then your argument isn’t valid. Video games don’t make sense, and that’s true of the physics engine and of entities spawning/despawning, it actually makes LESS sense that the game would act normal as if there wasn’t a structural instability in the code. Like it or not, this is accurate to how video games function. Stop trying to review the game’s continuity through the lens of storytelling, because games don’t operate that way.
8:50 No, this isn’t how natural dialogue happens, you’re right about that, but this is how gamers talk to *themselves* when they’re frustrated with the game. Also, her player character isn’t moving, it makes perfect sense that she’d give her hand a rest from the keyboard right now.
11:25 Not every video game has shotgun recoil, and given how little the boss cares about the game, this makes sense. This also justifies the one-handed tug of war.
13:28 Okay, yes, the UI is atrocious and the glasses being linked to it is dumb, I’ll give you that, but under those rules, when Guy puts on the glasses, the game would treat him like a player character. It’s really stupid, but it’s the logic that the game is operating under.
25:43 That’s natural dialogue. It’s pretty hard to show an NDA with expository dialogue. Spoken exposition is sometimes necessary, and this is one of those cases. What are you even complaining about here?
30:50 Not what that line is saying, at all. From what we’ve seen, she deals with idiots and jerks like 24/7, so it makes perfect sense for her to hold a grudge against the player base.
46:52 It’s only that big because he’s become sentient. Like a Minecraft world, the storage space it takes up depends on how much has actually happened and how large the thought process (or physical world) is. This isn’t a set number, it’s been increasing throughout the movie.
58:19 The missing 4 is an Easter egg alluding to the laziness with which the game was made. That’s there intentionally. This is a well-known fact; how did you not know this?? Seriously, dude, this review is not going well for you. A lot of what you’ve complained about are intentional, logical things out there on purpose. THIS IS NOT REAL LIFE, IT IS A BROKEN BUGGY VIDEO GAME, STOP TREATING IT LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE PERFECT!
Everything else was fine, but these things in particular really got under my skin. Overall good review, but missed some glaringly obvious details.

6:38 I think it’s suppose to be just a funny joke. The tank being in the background doesn’t make sense but I personally found it funny.

Wait, you're telling me the blinds are important to the ending of this movie? Gee, that sounds awfully familiar . . .

Actually the ATV offroad fury games launch the players across the map if you drive far enough outside the playable area. I heard that killing players for leaving the play area is a running joke the company does.
Also im pretty sure an NPC would absolutely walk in front of an oncoming train. AI pathfinding doesnt always have the common sense to tell them not to walk onto oncoming danger, they strictly walk a path they are given.
