    These large denomination notes were not taken out of circulation because people weren’t using them is folly; they were taken out of circulation to control the amount of cash people could transport and make it more difficult to do so: hence no bills larger than $100.

You don't have to agree but if the expert says it is worth x and you still want z then auction it yourself. everyone freaking out explain to me what is the point of an expert if you are just going to ignore his valuation?

    That's funny. I tried to use a 1960s 20 dollar star bill at a gas station and they called the police on me. The cop came and took the bill and looked and said that he would buy it from me after duty if I wanted to sell it. It was a 1969b star note in great condition. He ended up being a collector. I tried to tell the idiot at the gas station that it was real, but to no avail.

    During my younger years as a soldier, when I transferred to a new location, generally from Stateside to overseas or back, I would sell off my excess possessions. Instead of taking a wad of cash with me, I would go to the bank and get $1000.00 and $500.00 bills which made transporting large amounts of cash easier and safer. In 1988, I was leaving an overseas assignment heading back to the States, I went to the bank and I was told: "you cannot get those large bill any more"! I ask why? The teller said: "the Government stopped issuing them because of the drug trade"! Strange thing was, after I got back to the States I could not find a corner telephone booth, either! It was the same story; they were taken out because drug dealers used them to make trades! Yeah, right! More like; more Government control!

    A star in a bank note serial number means that the original bill with that number was replaced with the "star" note, not that there's a break in the sequence. Bills are printed in sheets of 100 and if one or more bills on a sheet are damaged and pulled, they must be replaced so that the pack of bills from that sheet has 100 bills in it.

    • @RichardGaston
      @RichardGaston 7 років тому

      Yep Chip, it is a replacement note for a damaged note with the same serial number, the star indicates that it was created as a replacement. Star Notes on an older bill is rare but not uncommon. Newer bills on the other hand, you can find lots of them. I collect the older Star Notes because they are more valuable then the newer bills (some numismatic collectors like me collect the newer ones as well though).

      @@mam362 alot more than that, look at how much an acre of land more than doubled in the last 10 years. In the early/mid 30s you could buy a really nice pistol for 10 bucks out of the back of a magazine. What happened is now your only keeping about 22 cents on the dollar of what you make bc of taxes. State tax, federal tax, town and county taxes, school taxes, income tax, sales tax, not even to mention individual item taxes like tax on gasoline, tax on tobacco and other items that of course stacks with the sales tax. I wont even mention all the permit and license fees for stuff like fishing, hunting, or building anything on your own property. All those but two didnt exist a hundred years ago.
