It actually makes sense to me that Nick would push for Gertie's inclusion: they saw the reaction to characters like Nigel and especially Hugh from the first game and wanted to recapture that with a similarly out-there parental figure.

@@mekiherring2088 Because, from a purely marketing stand point, this kind of shock value only works once per character. Everybody went "Wow, Hugh as a fighter?! THATS SO WIERD!" the first time it happened and that got the game a lot of attention. Same with Nigel in the game's announcement.
But for a lot of people now - the last time they heard about Hugh and Nigel was when they became fighters the first time, so they aren't going to be shocked that those two are fighters 'again'. So they needed another character to do that for them.
I'm not saying its right - people liked Hugh, it makes sense that people would want Hugh in the sequel. But if Hugh is indeed cut, then it's more clear to me that they put Hugh in for the attention to the game that he brought, rather than actually because they think he deserved to be in it or cared about the fanbase that he had.

Is version of the game they the final version ? If not then it's not confirmed. It's only confirmed if it's final if it's not they haven't seen everything. I'm not going to buy what @@sonic_jukebox tester is selling.
@@coletakahashi Game is literally a month and a half away from release, they wouldn't be able to add in 11 characters if they aren't already in the game in that amount of time. The beta testers get the newest version because they have to test everything to make sure it works.

Best part about her is that she is crazy enough to pick a fight with everyone in the roster. I could actually see her taunting Shredder and wanting to fight him.
Regarding Gertie's disguises, I recall the first games had a requirement that all the characters alt costumes had to come from an existing diesgn, none could be original. So with that in mind, making Gertie's disguises part of her actual moveset would take up most of her Alt options, and would also cause readability issues, because I don't think there are enough disguises for both playaers to have a fully differentiated set.
Additionally, I wouldn't really consider Gertie to be a joke character. If I were thinking of what Hey Arnold Character would be in a fighting game, Gertie's the most obvious choice.Helga's the only character who really has a case for being there instead. If Hey Arnold were only to get two reps, Helga and Gertie would be the clear choice rather than Helga and Gerald
It would be weird if there ends up being only ONE Loud House character, seeing as there are two stages representing that franchise.
I’m hoping that Lincoln doesn’t get cut from this game. He’s pretty much the Mario of Loud House if you know what I mean. Hoping for Clide to be in this game too but hopefully not too much of a Lincoln clone tho.
Out of all the characters to pick from Hey Arnold! They chose nana Gertie, but then again, grandma was probably the best pick out of them all considering all the quirky stuff she was capable in the series. ❤

I expected cuts. Like, Helga is in the background of the Lockjaw stage, so she's out. I just hope that there aren't actually 11 of them. And if they are, I hope it's just because they didn't finish them in time, like Garfield and Shredder, and some of them will eventually make it in, and not that they're just gone cuz they only had like a year to remake the game.

I love Grandma Gertie as an inclusion but man… do we really not have ANY other jokes besides “look at this powerful move from this other fighting game, isn’t it so wacky to see it on a character like this?”
I also think the “Nick pushed to add Gertie” might actually explain a lot. If I had to guess, the devs told Nick flat-out they only had time to develop a certain number of characters & stages, with new characters & old characters having basically the same development time due to how much needed to be redone, so Nick mandated that the game would have mostly new characters at the cost of a bunch of NASB 1 characters getting cut.
The reason I think it’s most likely something coming down from Nick is like… look, these developers are smash players, they’re fighting game players, they know what it’s like when a character you main gets cut. Meanwhile Nick sees the marketing side, from their POV character reveal trailers will get the biggest draw, and you can’t have reveal trailers without new characters. Particularly with characters like Gertie, it seems like Nick wants to replicate the hype surrounding all these oddball character reveals from the first game, like toast or Nigel or Hugh.
The fact that they cut 11 characters (including helga) and added Gertie is so crazy to me, also the fact that they cut 2 main characters like Lincoln and kept Lucy as a loud house rep and CatDog is a bad business decision imo, also they cut 2 turtles and they added the other 2 turtles? Gosh this really sucks ass

I think gertie being in is neat i guess, but im surprised they didn't add stu or tommy's grandpa from rugrats as a playable adult joke character that would've been hilarious.

Hoping whoever they cut appears later as free DLC or something. It’s possible that their vision for the game was to include all of the characters and they didn’t have time to complete them all, similar to Garfield and Shredder in the first game, and they instead devoted time to the new characters and campaign, which is fair
This is probably the BEST case scenario.
I personally think, long term wise, it would probably be better if they delayed it for the sake of adding the rest of the cut characters to the roster instead of free DLC. That way people can’t complain it’s a rushed product or that the free DLC characters were haphazardly slapped in to appease the fans or that we have to wait for the rest of the OG roster to be added in. But, of course, that would probably be less likely than this.

I don’t think Helgha is cut from the game. Probably a unlockable character in the game in story mode. Plus they have done this for Spunky in the last game in the background

Her model looks a bit rough, looks more like NASB1 than NASB2. Moveset also wasn't what I would've expected. If Helga is cut for Grandma, it's a downgrade.

Of the Ninja turtles I would say popularity-wise Raphael is one of the popular ones Michelangelo was one of the popular ones Leonardo So how are you going to drop two of the three most popular turtles? Some of these potential cuts don't make sense lol
They’re not cutting the other ninja turtles and catdog and Lincoln, no way. My guess is they’re just reworking those characters more which is why we haven’t seen them yet.
Getting worried 11 characters could indeed be cut. It would help if we knew if there are unlockable characters.

Arnold not being in because of looking weird in profile is a bunch of baloney, all they gotta do is have him face a little more toward the screen but with his eyse looking more to the side, I'm almost certain several characters in Smash do this.
And 11 cuts is just not acceptable, especially the ones they chose. Lincoln, the main character from the only other Nickelodeon show to get more than one or two seasons since Spongebob? Oblina and Catdog, literally the only charactesr from their own series, with nothing replacing them? Helga is the secondary character, and is probably more popular than Arnold himself. The other two Turtles just speaks for itself, having half the turtles is just not right. This is just so frustrating, there's literally no reason for these cuts, none of these characters are held back by legal issues as far as I know. The only reason I can see is that they're not willing to delay the game, which is a weird choice given the rumors of a new Nintendo console coming up.

Gertie is a decent choice. Kind of a bummer the leaks happened so early. It would have been fun to see people shocked that she's even here.
As for the assumed cuts, I'm honestly of the opinion that they're generally not a huge deal. I'd say maybe 3 or 4 of the cuts feel like the wrong call, but beyond that? Eh, I mean, ideally everyone would be back, but if heavy cuts were a necessity to actually have newcomers, then I think the characters they chose to call were the right picks for the most part.
I could see Helga still being in the game, it's likely in that stage when she isn't there as a fighter, then background character, when she is a fighter on that stage, she won't be a background character, kinda like that whole debacle with Smash 4 with Toon Link, also If each of the fighters had unique dialogue between certain fighters, like say having Hugh Neutron fighting his son Jimmy, you could have Jimmy bring up he has to test equipment and he's there to help or go on about a simulation as means of validating them beating the crap out of each other, you could have the same ide with Gertie fighting her grandson Arnold or his frenemy Helga saying it's just training since Gertie is a black belt fighter so yeah it would kinda make sense for her at some point show them a couple of moves to them and such, to be their teacher in the fighting arts, either way I'm keeping an eye on this game, could be a better experience than the last game, I tried it and the controls were a mess and not what I expected, you couldn't customize them which Is a bummer since I wanted to enjoy another Smash fighter like I did with Multiversus, hopefully Nick All Star Brawl gets it right this time.
I know this has nothing to do with the reveal but do you know if every remaining veteran is cut?
I never thought of this but maybe we’ll get Carl Wheezer as DLC now. He’s another jokey Jimmy Neutron character.

Nick execs simply wanted to cash in on the "adult meme character" that Nigel and Hugh brought, and that's why Gertie is in. I'm not mad at her inclusion; I think it's actually funny and fitting. But a lot of fans wanna see Arnold, and Helga potentially getting cut (tbh she was one of my mains, but I don't mind her as a cameo) and replaced by her and Gerald isn't setting a good precedent. They're "supposedly" replacing fan favorites for the sake of meme potential, which can only go so far.
We got to remember character cuts isn’t a new thing that’s happened to many other games. It’s definitely unfortunate and I hope at least we get few of the missing 11 characters😢
The bigger problem though is that some of them seem to be the last people that should be cut, like Helga, Leo, Mikey, Lincoln. PTM or Hugh, sure, but the others?

I hope if they do some of the eleven characters as dlc I hope that they are free and not paid, and save the paid slots for original characters because if they don’t that is huge stab in the back for people who have been supporting this game since the beginning

It's total BS that they're cutting any characters. It's a literally just an enhanced version of the first game. In what world is making new characters from scratch the best course of action BEFORE you make sure the first game's cast returns? I'm sorry but hearing this just totally plummeted any bit of excitement I could have had for the game. Oh well I'm sure modders will eventually fix it since capitalists can't be bothered. I'm not blaming the devs btw.

I mean worst case they could be in the background if you're not playing as them. I mean King of Fighters does that as does Smash Bros on the Spirit Tracks saves. If you're not playing as Toon Link he's driving the train.

I hate it that they cut so many characters. A lot of popular ones aswell. Helga, other 2 turtles, sandy and shredder.
I don't think this would have been a problem in a vacuum, or if this was a first game like you said, and I was expecting cuts for a good while now, but the problem is the insane amount of cuts and the questionable prioritising of certain characters (April instead of trying to have all four Turtles together especially). Eleven cuts is a crazy amount, and a lot of those characters were major ones.
Gertie's moveset doesn't really seem like anything particularly special to really justify her getting in over others, especially when they copied over a few of Captain Falcon's moves. I haven't seen Hey Arnold in a long time and barely remember anything about it, but I definitely agree with what you said about them wasting her potential. Her having a stance system involving her taking on her various personas that would alter her moveset would have really taken advantage of the character choice and made her feel more unique and justified in her conclusion. Right now she just seems like a character they kind of phoned-in like a few of the characters' movesets in the first game.
As for why Nickelodeon themselves had chosen her, which really surprised me when I found that out, as another person said here in the comments, it's likely one the execs saw the movement for and inclusion of Hugh Neutron and probably wanted the sequel to have another wacky parental figure joke character in the game, not quite understanding that Hugh was a massive meme _before_ this game meaning adding someone even more out-there but lacking that fan demand just won't have the same kind of effect.
If the NASB devs only had time to make a roster size of the last game within the time constraints and budget given to them, we have three options:
1. Literally cut and paste the last game's roster. Everyone complains that there are no new characters to play as, and it doesn't bring in anybody new (plus, with 11 cuts and 10 new characters, somebody is getting cut no matter what, so the roster is automatically inferior).
2. Sacrifice just a few old characters for new ones. The people who mained those characters feel especially targeted because "their character" got cut. Fans complain their isn't enough new characters to justify a new game. Doesn't bring in that many new players.
3. Sacrifice half the roster for another brand new half of the roster. Half the playerbase loses their mains, but it feels like their are 10 brand new characters they might also enjoy instead. Feels like a new entry in the series with a lot of new things to experience. Brings in a lot of new fans with characters previously unrepresented.
Obviously the ideal "4th possibility" is that this game gets delayed for a few years and given more budget to add back everyone from the last game. But I'm going to assume that's out of the dev's hands. They've been given a budget and deadline to work with from Nickelodeon/Gamemil, and they're contractually required to stick to it. That's just how game development works, unfortunately. Sometimes games get rushed out because that's the company's MO. I mean, the same company released THREE racing games within 2 years of each other on the Switch.
Considering the three realistic options, and how fans wouldn't be happy regardless of ANY of the outcomes, I think the 11 cuts they made make a lot of sense. Would I have chosen a few different characters to replace? Probably. I definitely would've kept Hugh, Catdog and Toph, though if Gertie, Angry Beavers and Azula were pushed by Nick, then those previous choices may have felt redundant. I would've loved to see the TMNT all in one game, but if others got THEIR mains cut, it would've created resentment towards the turtles for taking up 5 character slots. And for anybody who wants to cut April, please respectfully stfu and leave my waifu alone :P My point is, whoever you cut, or don't cut, SOMEBODY is going to be upset, whether from cuts or at the lack of new inclusions.
I still think the roster looks pretty solid, especially since everybody has been reworked to have more unique movesets that deviate from simple the "rushdown" archetype. I didn't like the last game's roster, but that had nothing to do with the roster's size or who they picked, but how mechanically similar they all felt. This game seems to fix that. Plus there's still DLC, and the chance old characters could be added back (I wouldn't even be shocked if veterans were added for free, like how the highly requested voice acting and items were for the last game.)
TLDR: Devs probably had their hands tied and had to make some tough choices, and it would suck no matter what they did, but I think they made the right choices, and made the best out of a bad situation. Not every game is Smash Bros Ultimate, especially in the fighting game genre. Cuts tend to happen to keep the rosters fresh. Also for the sake of your sanity, it's probably best to look at the game's roster as a shitpost entirely comprised of joke characters (like Slap City) rather than a serious Smash Bros type crossover.
How would the Angry Beavers and Azula make CatDog and Toph redundant? You'd have to be using criteria as broad as "brothers fighting together" and "female benders" to consider them redundant.

I was so worried you were gonna go the route of “11 cuts is totally fine because this game’s polish is so much higher than the first game’s!” and I’m really glad you didn’t and just straight up said the cuts suck because man do they ever. This is not the same as games like Smash 4 cutting a few characters from Brawl. This is some “1 step forward and 2 steps back” nonsense.
I'll probably comment something similar on the cuts video, but I very strongly dislike these devs' approach to the roster. I felt the same way about thebfirst one. Thebname "Nick All-Stars" doesnt fit since so many of Nick's all-stars are absent. Prioritizing memes over character people want is not a good move.
I was so excited when this was announced because it was an opportunity to expand what they had set up and fix the roster issues. But instead they get rid of some vital pieces of the roster for forced memes amd weird choices. Right now I'm thinking I'll just wait to play this game free on PSN or something unless the campaign is something actually good.

Nick pushing for Gertie sounds like the devs were listening to the fans about Arnold not being in the game, but when they brought it up to Nickelodeon, they were like “nah, he’s supposed to be a pacifist! Put Gertie instead, lol!”

The big bummer for me is if they cut characters like CatDog or Oblina, that wipes their whole show's existence out of the game. Losing Toph but getting Azula sucks but at least there's still Avatar levels/music/etc
Yeah unless said otherwise, I am just going to think all of the 11 characters are cut for whatever the reason would be, it is just so weird to cut some characters like Sandy, Helga, the other two turtles, Shredder, Lincoln Loud, and Hugh as well as others that are fan favs, but most importantly those I have listen in particular

I think the cuts can also just be that the characters are not finished, since the game is having a graphic and gameplay update, and some character very reworked like Aang.

Helga is a popular character in Hey Arnold so her getting cut makes no sense. Honestly this is worst than being an online only unlockable in Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3.
And Hugh...... PEOPLE REQUESTED HIM FOR THE FIRST GAME!! So making him not playable will not only make sense but piss off the people that wanted him in the first game.

Why cut Toph when the main reason people were asking for Azula or Zuko to be playable was to represent all four nations in Avatar?

Js, the previous game gave out a few free charaters before the paid dlc. Maybe afew of th cut characters could come bck for free before the season pass comes out?
Garfield and Shredder were free because they were supposed to be in the base roster and didn't get in because the game had a rushed release. Unless some of these cut characters were being worked on as fighters I doubt they would be given away for free.
Cuts are standard and 11 doesn't seem too bad on paper for most games... but this was a final roster of 25 characters. This is hardly going to be a bigger roster than the first game if those rumors are true. It's obvious so much of this game is about refining what the first game was and remaking what didn't work as well, but I struggle to understand how it makes sense to just omit this much content. Seems like really poor resource management to me to focus so much time and money on singleplayer content at the cost of nearly half of the old roster, but we can't really know what goes on behind the scenes entirely.

I think it's Gerald that replaced Helga, not Gertie. Can't imagine Gerald's moveset being much different thematically from Helga's.

She isn't just a Captain Falcon clone or stand in if you read the article of the publisher who dropped the Gertie reveal trailer her main gimmick is that she has the ability to pull out random items (piano, thumbtacks, wrecking ball ect) from her secret pouch. This is most similar to the Guilty Gear character; Faust which the devs have unapologetically taken inspiration from for a lot of the games mechanics so far. So she is a bruiser type character with a randomized item mechanic thrown in. These reveal trailers are not done by the playtesters so they just kinda throw moves on screen that look cool without showing what the character actually plays like. Same thing happened for El Tigre, and Ember has a whole cheer mechanic we have yet to see

I’m hoping at one point we can get Harold in the game since he’s my favorite Hey Arnold character! Also really hope Helga didn’t actually get cut and still hoping at some point we can get Arnold in the game! And of course I will always want Timmy with Cosmo and Wanda in the game!

Another article suggested she has a unique bag of tricks item where she can use a piano and other random items? Which sounds awesome, we'll have to see how she looks in a future spotlight. Teasers usually don't last long enough to show everything a character can do, unlike Smash trailers

I never watch Hey Arnold, but having an old lady beat people up in a fighting game is hilarious to me, we need more old ladies in fighting games. As for Helga, it could be a Toon Link in Spirit Tracks situation. Also, I think her model in the stage background is taken directly from the first game since she uses the same idol animations. It could just be corner cutting method, but maybe it could mean something.
I can't see them cutting all of the characters. I think a lot of them will be brought back with free updates maybe paid but I will be shocked as they came to the conclusion to cut the two ninja turtles in the last game. I simply cannot believe they won't be in the game, especially Leonardo who was the character that represented the sword fighter archetype very well. Strange decisions being made that's for sure.
My only probleme and worry i have with the 11 missing characters is that i do not wanna see them as paid dlc characters in the future because ill be a discusting move if you ask me, since most people are not gonna go back and play the firts game just to play as those characters.

I love her. A big advocate for character diversity and a big appreciated of old people, Zilean one of my other fav characters for example, and I love the caregiving industry. However I will be let down, disappointed, etc if her costuming isn’t represented,akin to like mr game and watch atleast whom was my main in all 4 games

Gertie is a meme character that executives pushed. Like Steve from Minecraft getting into Smash... Nickelodeon wanted to see a wacky grandma kicking ass... and strange enough I don't hate it.

My thought on the whole charcter cut thing. I still think everyone is returning, but I wouldnt be suprised if there were cuts. As for Helga being the background of the stage, I think she won't be in the background if she's one of the players on the stage.

Most of the returning charachters have entirely new movesets in addition to the newcomers. Asking for so much would be unreasonable they dont have a budget like smash does

I only watched one episode growing up in. That was just basically it on. Fortunately, so hopefully, maybe in the future, we get Arnold.
Arnold is not allowed to be playable in fighting games ever because it goes against his pacifist nature

If I find out they cut Helgha in the game and they aren’t unlockable I’m going to be mad. But if we get Bessie HigganBottom or so other 2000s characters for dlc I will be ok for Helgha being cut. Apparently Grandma Gertie is a main character in Hey Arnold
helga being a background character is proof she was cut, and there isn't going to be any unlockable characters because they didn't do it with the 1st game

Just saying, advertising a "bigger roster" just to give us a smaller one is the sleaziest crap ever. Like can this decade have at least ONE good and honest western game that isn't indie? So far in 3, almost 4 years it's just Doom Eternal and Baldur's Gate 3 while Japan keeps pumping out bangers like it's 2010 again.

Out of all cuts I generally really believe that Hugh was what broke the Camel’s back for everyone even myself. That big fangroup worked their hardest to get him in, and he could not join the adults like Nigel and Gertie. That’s bad. This is one of the cuts that needs to be added back.
