This is cool, if a bit painstaking! Something I find useful is if you hold down Alt while you’re resizing or moving an image/chart/any other object, it’ll snap to the grid. Saved me ages obsessively trying to line stuff up.
Glad you liked it 😊 ALT is one of my favourites too, but I couldn’t really use it here as I was aligning to the map as opposed to the grid, which is a shame.
All you need to do is to exactly place 2 dots, say top left and bottom right, and via formula, let Excel calculate the exact position of all other dots 😊
You could build another version, using real map coordinates from each location, downloaded from internet, and them matching that with the dots in the graph. I think it will save a lot of time and also could be dinamic.
Nice idea, Jose. I'm not sure it would be any quicker as those dots take trial and error to line up, but certainly could help make it dynamic if you have lots of locations you want to turn the highlighting on/off for.
Yep, that's what I've done for a similar application. Works really well. I make the chart first then just manipulate the map aspect ratio underneath it until it fits. I had hundreds of highway crashes in a dataset and I wanted to represent cause of crash, type of vehicle, time of day etc. and dynamically associate those with the location on a map. Sometimes this method needs a bit of photoshop though because you might need to skew the image... I don't think Excel allows skewing of jpgs. It didn't when I was last doing something like this, but that was excel 2013.
Great video, I have an idea for how I can use this in my job. How do we know what the coordinates for the scatter plot should be? Is there an actual calculation or are you just trying different combinations until the right dot lights up?
Glad it was helpful! Yes, you just trial and error to find the co-ordinate that matches the dot. The gridlines help you get close and then you can tweak it from there. It's a bit manual, but doesn't take long.
Hi, I’m from UK :) My company wants me to learn Power BI to convert our data into a easy format, pulling in our machine monitoring data, sales force data and many other sources into one database. I’m looking at courses and see you offer one, however do your courses revolve around a data set you give out, or can the trainees use their own data. Sorry if that’s a stupid question, it’s just I’ve watched so many videos on this and I struggle to link up how I can do the same thing with my own data when it’s not relatable to what I need to achieve. Thanks for your time Tom
Hi Tom, thanks for your interest in my Power BI course. The course uses a dataset I provide so you can follow along with the exact steps. However, I provide support so that when it comes time to implement the techniques with your own dataset I'm there if you get stuck or have questions. I hope that clarifies things, but if you have further questions please reach out via email as I won't see replies to this tread due to the volume of comments I get. PowerBI to the rescue... couple of clicks and done. This is nice but the time to build would not work for me. Still very cool and gives me some ideas for other things.
A true artist, Mynda! Very bright graph presentation. Thank you!!!
Thanks so much, Ivan!
A bit painstaking, but creatively done! You've probably identified the use-case of another type of graph too! Thx for sharing!
Glad you liked it!
Salute from India
Thank you!

Very nice, thanks Mynda!
Thanks, Chris 😊
That's a fantastic example. Something I might never use, but good to know!
Glad you liked it, Rico!
Amazing work… as always. Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure, Luke 😊
Great Technique. Awesome presentation. Great Job. Always your video rocks ...
Thank you so much 😀
Hi Mynda!Really Super Cool Chart...Thank You :)
Cheers, Darryl 🙏
This is great! Thank you! Data visualization like this is very cool!
I didn't Excel can has this capability!
Glad you liked it, Lisa!
Very creative, love it 😍
Thank you! 😊
This is awesome. Definitely going to work on this one. Thank you!
Great to hear, Aubrey!
Thank for sharing, so smart!
Glad you liked it!

Useful and valuable information!! :)
Can I do this in Google Sheet?
Not sure about sheets.

Glad it was still useful, David! I agree, Power BI has better map charts, but not everyone has the budget for Power BI.
Why do we use so many dots instead of just a big one to represent regions?
Because it’s more visually appealing.
Out of interest I found that when setting shapes text to equal cell values, the text in the shape takes on the text formatting of the cell.
Good to know. Thanks for sharing 🙏
brilliant !
Cheers, Martin!

Thanks, Ahmed!
That's art 🎨 not Excel... amazing
Thank you so much 😀
