You have to grind the bottom of the dye to its deepest spot and then take a peace of flat stock to raze the level for the dye. I had to rebuild my 1924 little giant. brass is to soft there is a vid of how to rebuild them. mine turned out good lots of luck

Yeah, I had to redo this and remove the brass. I did not raise the dies using any flat stock. I just hand filed the dovetail until everything lined up properly.

    QUESTION:
at the 0:50 point of your video you have a shot of the upper die and the key you have stuck in it.
I note that letter "N" on the die, and my question is this- "Did the key get driven down from the
N" end down to the "W" end...?
    Or....
Is the die just sticking out that far haveing been driven up from underneath at the "W: end and going to and past the "N" end?

You probably know this, but the N side is the narrow side, so that is the side the key gets driven in on.

stimpsonjcat67 so you have that much key left over?

Oh no, I cut off the excess before installing the ram.

I just want to make sure I understand the video image... ( at 0:55)
The video shows an upper die sitting with the N side up...but the long key that we see sticking up out of the die was actually driven down so the part that is sticking up is the part that would not get driven down?...correct?

can you tell me the height of the upper die?
I wish to make my own from a big block of steel I have on hand, but I have to cut it to the correct height first.

This is a bit of a tall order, as the dies have wide and narrow ends and are used with drifts in order to hold them in place. I will work on this if you will send me an email request about it so that I do not forget. stimpsonjcat67@gmail.com

      done.
I asking for the total height of the die...like if you took the die out of the hammer and set it down on a table (still in its horizontal position as it sits in the hammer mounting) and then measured its total height

Ram edge to die face 1-15/16"
Dovetail base to die face 3"

    QUESTION:
My top die needs to be replaced. I removed it but Im not sure what I should do next?
    and...
In the video you talk about not needing to have the center pin that sets in the hole. Is this just for the lower die?...
I ask because I see the same small pin on my upper die and I need to know if that has to be added to a new die?

Interesting. I did not know the upper had a pin hole. I don't think my ram did when I had it apart. The factory was EMPHATIC that the lower pin should not be re-used with the new dies.

The upper I took off has a little steel pin in the middle of it.
Do you think, based on what you were told about the lower die, that I need to make sure the new upper has the same little nub?

I have no pin in my upper. But call the factory and ask them to be sure. My upper did walk on me a bit the last long session I worked.

      thanks,,,this is good to know.
It would make my plans a lot more simple to have a guy make it for me...
