Let's make Teto sing! - A basic UTAU tutorial

- This is a very basic tutorial, it's basicly just how to download the program and make it sing. Of course there's much more to this than that, but we'll talk about that some other time. UTAU is a little confusing at first, but don't let it overwhelm you ;)
I'm RuRi and I hope you like my first tutorial! :)
I hope you can understand what I'm trying to communicate...English is obviously not my native language, so maybe I should have written a script for this instead of just recording oTL

How'd you get it to work? I use hirigana and even downloaded the cvvc auto converter, but Teto still makes no sound

some weird shizz happened i installed every thing except teto was named in gibberish lettering and when i tried to test her voice it sounded nothing like Teto but like a real person -that shizz sp00ked me-

When I downloaded Teto and wanted to use her, I noticed that every, EVERY japanese symbol turned into things like "æ, ė, ó...". I can use a japanese keyboard, but not a single UTAU. Not even the default voice... And when I start UTAU there isn't a single Katakana, Hiragana or Kanji just "ò, ã, ê..." What should I do???
what most likely happened is the language settings. in order for UTAU to work, the lyrics have to be in japanese (obviously) did you copy and paste it? if so, the browser you used has to be in "japanese". its all in english, but when you paste it it should then make sound. i had the same issue as you
You probably need to change your computer into the Japanese locale

I wanted to thank you for making this tutorial. I just downloaded an UTAU and I couldn't get it to make a sound, and I finally just got it to say "a" after 3 hours and this video. Thank you.

Can your pc handle it?
you need to have your pc locale set to Japanese, and you need to type the lyrics you want utau to sing in the Japanese alphabet. If you're still having trouble, i recommend uninstalling utau then reinstalling it once your locale is set to Japanese.

Thanks for this introduction to Utau. I really studied and followed everything you covered to understand the very basics you mention here. I know very little about music and song composition but Vocaloid and Utau got me interested, so I am glad that your introduction was simple enough for me to understand. I can see a long and difficult road ahead but at least from here I can begin to see if this is something I am capable of eventually using properly.
Yeah I rekin so! I have a few covers on my chanel, which I had a lot of fun making back in the day. I wish I had time for more, and still dream of covers I'd like to do and how I'd do it, though spare time in my life has diminished for now. I learned a lot about UTAU, music theory, video creation and animation (starting from knowing nothing at all) in my journey and I actually did many more covers that are not uploaded to the internet. So I did everything you did, and I can see that it's being played, yet I can't hear Teto saying anything.

That’s probably because you need Japanese symbols instead of romaji. There’s also a plug-in that changes Japanese romaji to hiragana, for example: konichiwa kasane teto desu! To: こんにちは、重音テトです！(sorry for the late reply I just found this video).

The tutorial may be a bit outdated, but it is still very helpful to see all steps demonstrated. Teto does not sing yet on my computer - because the song I downloaded is in Romaji. So it's another voice. Yet. :-) Many thanks!
Yeah. The first time I downloaded it I could get Ritsu's sample to make a sound. But when I tried notes I couldn't hear anything. And I know it's not because of my language not being Japanese, I didn't need to mess with that. I've already downloaded the program with the English patch before. I didn't do anything with the files. Opening UTAU was the first thing I did.
can you add a link to a place to fnd USTs because the forum has changed a lot and so its difficult to find more than one
First of all: Thanks. Now to your question. First you have to install/activate the Japanese language pack. Windows Vista and 7 will probably already have it, so you'll just have to activete it, on WinXP you might have to install it first. Then you'll find the letters JP along where it says EN on the lower right of your screen. Click on it. Now click on the letter A that should appear. Select the first option (ひらがな）。Now you can type in hiragana. You'll get the hang of it, eventually.

Harukaa Change your system Locale to Japanese. If that doesn't work, I can link you to a romaji Teto, and Momo and Defoko.
***** Ok, I have seen alot of that. Ok first of all I have Windows 8 as an OS. I look in control panel>clock,language,region>language
ok there it is a list that has English. I added Japanese to it.
It says that english is in the highest priority of language and that I could change the priorites. Ok and I changed it to Japanese as the highest one, but it doesnt have anything to do with it!!
So I do not where the system locale is nor do i have it on windows 8
What do I do???
Harukaa Windows 8 does have it. I have it and Teto works fine. Google "How to change System Locale in Windows 8/8.1" And it should tell you. Otherwise I can distribute the romaji voicebanks.

Guys, you have to change your system region, noted how to below, BEFORE you install and download anything otherwise the voices will not play. You can check this by clicking the icon in the top left and seeing how many voice files it will have running. It should say 0 since it was installed improperly. Completely uninstall UTAU, change your region, then reinstall it.
Also, it's important to note for the default voice bank selected you need to use Hiragana. For the one this video has you download you have to type in Romaji. To see the list of what you can use right click anywhere and select "Sound list".
To change region:
right click the date in the task bar > select adjust date and time > select region & language > select additional date, time, and region settings > click the word region > click administrative > click system locale > finally choose Japan and restart computer

ERROR365 Do you know how to use the English voicebank? (I.e. Do you know how to insert the English lyrics?) Or is it another problem?
Well, with Teto (and depending on which other voicebanks you used) you'd have to input the lyrics in hiragana, Then, you have to select the notes you want it to play, rightclick them and select "render and play".

If you made the folder yourself then you'll have to set it as the root voice directory under tools-option-path. If that doesn't work, try registering the voicebank manually via tools-option-bank Regist.
I'm getting red exclamation marks after I had installed a second voice bank. The first one being English and the next Japanese. What can I do to fix this?

for everyone still having trouble, when you download UTAU run the setup. There should be a part in the setup where it has something like C:\Program Files (x86)\UTAU\ . That's where UTAU will go to. Copy and paste it. Then, finish the setup. After that, open the folder thing (I don't know what it's called) and click on the top white bar. Delete what's there and paste where UTAU will go to. Click enter and you should see UTAU as well as other folders like voices and all that. (really sorry if that didn't help much)

Did you download the ust before or after you set your locale to japanese? If so, did you check if the voicebank matches the the ust?
This tutorial is over a year old. Changes have been made to the programm. It's install version only now, so the oice folder should be right where you installled it to. (Usually Programs/UTAU/voice)
I've registered to the UTAforums and I never got my activation email. I even had them resend it (multiple times) :/ But other than that, this has helped me immensely! :D Thank you!
Basically...any other ust. Usts are like sheet music for utau, just google the name of the song you want plus "ust download", you should find one you like.

I did everything I was supposed to but first of all yes I'm using hiragana but no sounds coming from Teto and even after i installed the English patch and added it to the UTAU only some stuff was in English (everything that was in English when installed) but most of it was just in gibberish what's going on? I heard there was another way to make Teto sing but It's in the settings and I cant read anything since its all in gibberish. I thought I might need to download Japanese onto my computer with the settings and stuff but it wont even let me type in Japanese for some reason it just says "Japanese not ready to operate" and I don't know why so I thought i'd use translate. But yea no sounds and still complete gibberish what do I do?
A lot of people got this problem... We can't hear Teto song, what should we do? I downloaded Utau (in English) and I've got Teto's voicebank (in English) but if I write something down and push the play butten it won't make any sound. (sorry for my bad English.)

When you try to make Teto sing a song like World is mine or Just Be Friends, how do you know on which piano thingy to put it on(the C#4 etc. stuff, or how high and deep her voice gets when she sings.)

i started using her for hiragana USTs only and she sings those.
if u want to make UTAU work for a romaji UST, download a different voicebank and try that one.
how did you do to make 7zip supporting japanese characters?! When I open the archive, the files are in gibberish and ends up being unusable while i'm opening it with 7zip! :'(

Oh? I didn't notice.You can use any other ust, the internet is full of them! Just search for "(song you want) ust download" on YT or Google and you should find one.
Mine doesnt even shoe what it shows you,it shows some kind of uhhh- wierd languege that is like pæjțș and uh i cant put teto in the utau folder because theres just the download uhh- maybe its because i have windows 7 or because i did it wrong- well good tutorial tho
I did make sure that Teto's voice bank was in the voice folder, however, when I go to project property, it doesn't show up, and I tried searching for it in project property, and it doesn't show up there either.
Yes, actually. There's that Paradichlorobenzene remix that's on my channel and I have two or three original songs, too but I'm not sure wether I should upload them 'cause they're not really good...
It's either the lyric you put in doesn't have a corresponding phoneme in the said voicebank (it's a japanese voicebank, after all) or UTAU's acting up (can be checked by placing a note anywhere and playing the region; if you here anything, then UTAU's not acting up) or you put an entire word on a note (which is a problem on an older version of UTAU, but not the new ones).
Whenever I downloaded a ust, opened it, and set the voicebank as Teto and clicked ok, a window appears and it'd likely an error. It's in Japanese, but all I know it says is 2.
I think these are all VCV banks. Those will only work with VCV usts ( the ones that have "a か" instead of just "か" or "ka"). I think that might be it. To use those banks on regular ust, you'll have to convert the ust with a cv to vcv plugin.

Thanks for the tutorial. The problem people are having might just be because of teto herself. I couldn't transport her voicebank so I tried Kikyuune Aiko and it worked so your video is fine it's just a software glitch
-So like, I've been trying to fix the folders for two days now after watching up to the voicebank part (where you put Teto's voicebank into the voicebank folder for the... You know what i mean) and after trying and opening it, Everything is all just gibberish. It's not english, japanese or anything else. If i tried to play the sample voice (defoko's?) it just pop ups an error message. if I downloaded the most recent ver. of the program, I'll literally only get the program. I'll have no place to put the voice bank folders. I'm a noob. XD (if it's simple, please help me TAT) I NEED HELP D:- NEVERMIND FIXED IT
I installed it multiple times and done everything like you'd show us ... everything works properly until I want to start. It always has "File load error" with any voicebank. No sound.

That depends on which Teto Append you mean. If you mean her whisper voicebank then you'd use it like a normal voicebank. If you mean the thing with the additional r sounds, you'd add those to the normal voicebank by putting the contend of the folder you downloaded into the folder of Teto's voicebank. You should then be able to access them as part of Teto's VB.
I've got a bit of a problem. I downloaded everything and did it all right, but I can't hear Teto when I play the song. I got a ust and everything! I can see it all, but I can't hear anything! No, my earbuds are not broken, they're working fine! I just can't hear anything from the program!
Followed all instructions, nothing. No voice. I tried saving it. It either saved a blank .wav file, or a piano midi, no voice.

You can take another ust. Just search for "(song you want) ust download" in YT and pick one.
Have you set your locale to japanese guys? Because utau in my computer works and if you have a hirigana utau and you put romanji letters it won't work like using hirigana letters for a romanji utau

she also says things like "because we like" and "because you like" which i notice german laet's players do a lot when they speak english. i assume if i knew german they would be saying some equivalent in their native language.
Okay, sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you. Your YT profile says you're from the US. If that's the case the floating symbol vs. point thing shouldn't concern you.
Did you remember to use a ust that the bank you're using can actually read?
Did you remember to select all notes before hitting play? (So that they're pink instead of blue)
Does the program give you any error messages?

I did all the step and when I was ready to hear teto sing (i did all until 6:42), it runs but no sound was coming ... (yes my volume was on) hehe, but above the notes it's not written in hiragana it's written in some weird letters... O.o
before you download your utau you must change your system locale to Japanese.
No, UTAU is Windows only but there is another program called "Uta-Synth" which is pratically UTAU for Mac.
I really need some help guys. I recently got UTAU on my Mac and I'm having some problems making my voicebanks sing. Defoko sings perfectly, but Teto won't make a sound! It says it's playing but I hear nothing. I also installed Ami Koharune, but she wouldn't recognize any notes! Please help me, I would really like any help you can give.

Lovleyhearts Artstuff02 Defoko is the default voice.
Its working fine for me, but there is one problem.
"Midi file is not specified" - it wont play any sound.
I've changed the locale. I also changed my computer's language over to Japanese under Windows Live, so hopefully the Japanese will show up now. If not I have no idea...
Sorry for the delay. You should find the folder whereever you have installed it to (usually the program folder on your main harddrive), just put the res folder in there.
If you are sure there is no folder called "voice" in the folder called "UTAU" then you'll have to create a folder and call it "voice". Put Teto and all the other voicebanks in that folder. Open UTAU. Clack on "Tools", then "option" and select "path". Tick the box that says "change voice root directory". Click on the button that says "..." select the folder you created earlier. See if UTAU finds the voicebanks then.
Whenever I press ok after choosing Teto, it just comes up with question marks and won't show her in the program.
Edit : Nevermind! I got it to work
project -> project property -> if you look down under the OK-button, there is a little with thing to click on and ut says : use restampler.dll (this stetting isn't saved in the proect) click this -> click OK and you're done

Can you make the UTAU program full screen next time? Also, I have a Windows 7 computer and I have tried to download the program, but it won't work, it always says that it is not a free program and it will give me a 40 day trial. I don't get it. What did I do wrong? If you need more info just ask.

Hm. Okay. Wenn dein Computer auf deutsch eingestellt ist, musst du als erstes dein Dezimaltrennzeichen von einem Komma in einen Punkt umändern. Dann stellst du die Regionaleinstellungen auf japanisch um, dann lädst du den ganzen Kram hier runter, dann öffnest du das Programm, öffnest die ust die du möchtest, wählst die VB die du möchtest, markierst alles und rechtsklickst auf eine Note und wählst "render and play".
Sorry for stupid question. I did everything both in the the video. At me all work, but when playing she not singing. Other words I press play and as if no voices.

Are you sure you didn't forget anything? If you're from a country that uses a floating symbol (,) instead of a point, you'll have to change that because the resampler will crash otherwise.
When I downloaded UTAU, it was already in English (due to a recent update). So I didn't have to download the English Patch. When everything is done and I have the lyrics and everything in UTAU and they are in the Piano Roll, I select all the notes and click play. But I don't hear anything. Any suggestions?
Also, when I click play and the black box with all the commands scrolling down pops up, everything says "file load error" for some reason. I really have no clue what I did wrong...

To get the Utauloids to show up for me, I had to get the voicebanks converted into Romaji.
I'm assuming you've properly set your locale to Japanese...Does your computer play any other wav files or any sounds for that matter? Did you try a different voicebank?
Whenever I open my UTAU, a window pops up, reading; "File not found". And then it opens, but there's another window that pops up reading; "Subscript out of range." Ehm.. what seems to be my problem here? I followed all the steps correctly, I believe.

Okay, so it does play the wav files themselves. Then you're probably not using the right kind of ust. Try using a different ust as well as a different voicebank.
I downloaded a romaji voicebank, but it doesn't have any .ust files? UTAU won't let me open them, and I don't know what to do..
