Building a Sub box I designed for two JL Audio 12w6v3's

  • I barely ever even post pictures let alone video of my builds so here's a timelapse with an amazingly terrible voice-over for the maybe two people interested of me building the box to go under the bed in the sleeper of a semi truck that I did a whole build in. Might get around to posting more about the build but did 2 12w6's on an rd1500/1 and a 3way set of Ground Zero Uranium's on a vx800/8i.

    I’ve been rocking and loving the w6v3 a for a while now. I’ve had single HO for 10” and 12” and I’ve paired them in custom ported to spec but tuned to about 32 or 31hz. I’ve recently built a sealed for a single 12”. The sealed is 10% over spec and I absolutely love it. I’ve never liked sealed but the w6v3 is a different animal. Now I’m adding the second 12” sealed 10% over spec. It’s the only sub I’d recommend sealed. Best SQ I’ve ever owned and I’ve been playing with all this since 90s

      The most "reasonable" recommended sub in a sealed enclosure haha. W7's go wild in sealed setups but they are just too expensive and need too much airspace to really be worth it 95% of the time compared to w6's

    I like the fact that there's no parallel wall behind the subs to muddy everything
    Most people never figure that out
    Efficientcy is everything in boxes and amplifier and speakers
    The best boxes I've had were never a mindless square box
    Good job

    The way the subs were turned back in 45゚You could have made a nice screen cover to bolt right to the front of that box. I would have used so metal screen mesh and bolted it right to the front of the box,but it being in a semi, the subs would be safer that way. Nothing gets smashed up against them. Those speakers are too expensive to be busting one by letting something get smashed into it... awesome box build tho props on the attention to detail an design

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, for sure would have been nice to protect them more but the truck goes to a lot of semi truck shows and the customer wanted it to be seen so I figured doing them facing in like that would help protect them a bit but level them viewable for people looking in the cab. I did give him a couple grills to slip on if he was going to have a bunch of stuff in the cab though haha

    Nice box. Kind of reminds me of the factory JL HO boxes. Love that you were able to make such a complex box with simple, everyday shop tools. No high dollar CNC laser cutters or routers. Did you get a chance to hear it once it was built?

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому +1

      Thanks!!!! And yeah i definitely took inspiration from the ho boxes and even thought about just setting two top to top to get the same idea but the height constraint with the sleeper and the depth constraint from the customer meant I needed to stretch it out a bit width wise, also thank you for noticing the lack of fancy tool use :). And yep had a chance to fully tune the system on a JL Max and it was pretty darn impressive considering the airspace in the cabin. Wish I could post a video of that but it's all copyright music so untill I see the truck again I don't have one

    Not gonna lie, I've seen many videos with MUCH worse layouts, build quality, and less thought through the whole process. If I had one suggestion, it would be to buy or build a circle jig for the router. You can get better results easier with the speaker cut outs and recesses once you get used to using them. Otherwise a nice box and clean build.

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому +1

      While you could definitely do something similar to this as a blow through, it went under the bed in the sleeper if a semi-truck. I'm the same way with blow throughs, idk if I could bring myself to do it. But I did bolt a box with 2 12w1's vented to the back wall of a tiny Ford ranger one time and that was hilarious enough

  • @Nonamehere1
    @Nonamehere1 Рік тому +1

    Amazing job Dustin. I have a question: Have you not considered putting the ducts on the side ends? With the acoustic center closer, one woofer to the other, we gain more sound coherence. Anyway, it must be amazing.

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому +1

      Technically the acoustic source of a vented enclosure IS the port, and accounting for driver based soundwaves this box design compresses all of that in the center

    • @Nonamehere1
      @Nonamehere1 Рік тому +1

      @@dustinsonger851 Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the explanation.

    • @Nonamehere1
      @Nonamehere1 Рік тому

      @@dustinsonger851 I've been thinking about your statement these days and considering that there is an interaction between the port and the face of the woofer, wouldn't it be correct to say that the acoustic center in such a box will vary depending on the measured frequency? That is, at lower frequencies it would be the port, and at higher frequencies it would move to the center of the woofer.

    • @Nonamehere1
      @Nonamehere1 Рік тому

      please consider my question for purely educational purposes.

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому +1

      Haha I love educational purpose only questions :p. And yes you would be correct there, but don't get too caught up in that, subs don't play very high in the frequency range and for the most part, especially in a small area like a car, sub bass is pretty non-localized, and your brain has a hard time telling exactly where it's coming from. Also in a car in particular, if your going with a vented enclosure your probably much more focused on the pressure waves themselves rather than the acoustic properties of your sub bass, if your primary goal is that, you should be looking at sealed enclosures

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому

      Thanks and honestly, your comparing 3 completely different companies... There is zero connection between them other than the very loose definition of "they make subwoofers"... In my experience, sundown is an spl company through and through, just create pressure. Skar, no offense, but is off the shelf slapped together assemblies that sell for cheap and give you results that equal the price tag, not necessarily a bad thing per second, they kick the crap out of most cheap brands but there excursion numbers are a joke compared to power requirements and subwoofer sizes. JL is an SQL company, main focus being audio quality which is not necessarily what everyone is looking for but when you are, they are next to impossible to beat especially considering they have a ton more excursion than any sub that's purely focused on sq, as well as running on significantly lower power levels. But price is the main reason people don't use them, they are a premium product that comes with a premium price tag

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому

      I should add though, I'm personally a ground zero audio guy haha. Beats all three of them on output per dollar, and some of there subs can directly out compete jl's w6 line in output and damn near out compete in sq at 2/3's the price, only downside is they need 3 times the power but that's why soundigital exists

I'd have to dig through my stuff since it was a few months ago that I did this. But generally a relatively simple vented enclosure is gonna cost somewhere in the 450-600 dollar range

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому

      Not really honestly, in no way, shape, or form is it a transmission line box even slightly, it's just a standard vented enclosure, the only reason it probably wierd looking is because you have been most likely dealing with "prefab" enclosures or guys who haven't done 18+ inch long ports. There is a lot of guys including myself who prefer the sound of a port that is longer than 18 inches and that is all you are seeing here

    1.3 per sub? That box to small, it would be ok if it was sealed, but ported, it's not gonna hit any of the low notes and have a high peak making it sound punchy like a bass drum. If you listen to rock and heavy metal it would prolly sound decent.

    • @dustinsonger851
      @dustinsonger851  Рік тому

      I would normally totally agree with you, most boxes I build for 12's are in the 2-2.5 cube range per sub but W6's are optimized for much smaller air space's than most subs, port tuned at 34 and it has plenty of response below 30hz and not peaky at all. If you ever get a chance to mess around with a w6 do it, they will shock you haha.

Yes there designed for smaller boxes but not that little, the JL enclosures for them are bigger and manufacturers usually build there boxes to the lowest airspace recommend so there compact.

      definitely not trying to come off as confrontational or anything, just informative, the v3's are wild compared to most stuff out there and jl's direct recommended size for a vented enclosure minus the port is 1.3 plus a port tuned to 33hz, I've built more than a few boxes for them and they all have responded well, and that's not just my ear nor my customers, but I also use a JL MAX to help tune my systems with dsp's so i see the frequency response in actual measurement on that as well. Now, i will give you that the h.o. box does seem to be different than the specs they recommend, but I've never stuffed the port and measured the airspace of the chamber in an h.o box but my guess is its probably somewhere around 1.5ish cube, why, i cant without any certainty or real studying of it say why but in any case in my experience I've had good enough luck with the recommended size in all sorts of vehicles and didn't want to push my luck trying something new in a vehicle like a semi that i had only seen once in person as well as having little experience building systems in them. and in the end this system was using a vxi800/8 to power the front stage and control the 1500/1 on the subs and what i saw in measurements and heard in person was definitely a good response from them. sorry for anyone who actually reads this whole book of a response but i love positive discourse haha

      I think I took some video of testing it, I'll see if I still have all of those. I was worried about putting any of that in the video because it's more a test of the microphone than a show of what the setup sounds like. Plus I have no idea how the copyright stuff will work out haha but I'll try to put one of those up

      @@dustinsonger851 Please do it. Even without music, if you make a video with RTA readings in an open field and/or inside the car. Any kind of information produced in a project like this would be very welcome. And also, of course, your subjective impressions.Thanks!
