I was so blessed to work with the Boise Zoo when I did, back in the 90s as a kid. Aldabras and a HUGE Galapagos... Giant enclosures... Snakes and monitors... A Herpists dream. My mentor was the head of the reptile department in the Boise Zoo and now works in Idaho conservation. Grateful they have informed staff with their FWC!

@@KampKenan as an adult, I forgot my roots. Through COVID, I fell in love with them all over again. I love going to the feed store here to talk to the giant sulcata who can't lift himself with his legs at the pet shop. The poor guy shuffles around his hay to his basking light. He has shell issues and is a permanent resident there. I know the employees don't have time to talk to him, so we go chat. I think all creatures deserve the opportunity to be intellectually stimulated and it just doesn't seem like he is. He has a pen he pushes himself around in. He's in Spokane Washington.

Aldabra's are the last Giant Tortoises of the Indian Ocean islands.
There used to be different species in the Seychelles and the Dodo islands of Mauritius, Reunion and Rodriguez.
The Aldabrans survived simply due to the fact that the island was off the preferred routes for sailing ships.

Oh, the Dodo islands (Mascarene?) each had their own species of Dodo too. Infact I think Reunion had two species!

Hi Kenan Love it when you take a trip to see Sam. His giant Aldabra tortoises are so awesome. They are truly gentle giants. He always learns something very important about them. They are so intelligent. How they test the water , to see if it is safe to drink. And that Oak leaves are poisonous, and will kill them if eaten. His facility is so amazing. Always so clean, and that he has such love, and passion for their care. Kenan I bet that you want another one for your kamp.❤🐢Cindy

Ohhhh ....Thank you so much ! Getting to see these Giants , with all the personality of Nostradamus , is like a fairy tale .... but they are real and Sam raised them ! And you, Kenan Matt and Tom , have a similar day to look forward to with Timmy, Boba, Circe, and Nostradamus. One day you too will be surrounded by giants who want a scratch and some greens... so stay limber !

I'd really love to have a tortoise but sadly it's not possible, i have a few health problems and I'd have no one to pass the animal on to when i pass.

I was unaware of the oak leaf scenario in that they could potentially poison a tortoise. I'd be curious if there are other trees to watch out for, as my one day enclosure is indeed surrounded by many species of trees.

If i remember, they used to be (might still be.) Legal to own as pets, but are stupid expensive. Like 300k expensive. And you are required to have a large outdoor area suitable for them to live in.

How I differentiate the galops and aldabras is that the aldabras have the more sea turtle esc head

Y'know, I would NEVER bother to do a weighing and size comparison between Aldabras and Galapagos Tortoises.
What's the point? They're darn big, either way!
Aldabras do seem to be a little bit less weird than the Galaps. I don't know what it is about Kenan's Galaps but I'd almost trust a Skunk Ape more than one of those guys!

i do feel in this case though its a great teaching tool. they were trying to help us understand just how large the creatures are. seeing something on small screen doesnt do it justice

What I have dreamt as a child. I always wanted one. I had watched a movie when I was a little girl with a huge turtle in it and I wanted it so bad. Can't remember the name of the movie you guys,sorry. But what a gorgeous species. ❤❤❤❤❤
Given how *atolls* are known to come into being, they have to be of fairly recent origin. One doesn`t have to be a scientist to see that structures so delicate and fragile as atolls don`t have a high expectancy of life. Contrary to conventional islands, atolls have never been part of the mainland from which some of the former evolved by way of separating. In the light of these facts, the question suggests itself how the giant tortoises - which cannot swim - ended up on the atolls of the Outer Seychelles. The same question arises, of course, with regard to the giant tortoises of the Galapagos Isles as well, despite the latter being neither atolls nor of particularly recent origin.
