  • Getting Solar to Escape from Power Outages in Pakistan? Then you must watch this video and avoid this mistake or rather a misconception about solar. Many solar companies in Pakistan are selling On-Grid systems with the promise of escape from loadshedding. This is far from reality. You MUST get Hybrid system to escape loadshedding in Pakistan. In this video I also share how many ACs can you run on a 10.4kw system.

Owais Baita Salam. Today I’m getting a 5 KW hybrid solar system installed in my house.
In the process, I have viewed almost 30 odd videos on UA-cam but I found your video as most informative and honest. Love your personality and oratory style. After watching your video, I have changed my
Mind and now going for 10.2 KVA. Thanks for your guidance - my concepts are very clear now. You are simply an adorable guy. I’m 73 years man and my eldest child is 44 years. I’m sure most of the parents watching your videos must be wishing that their children too match your skill and intelligence levels. At least I do 💖

This comment is going to be huge so bear with me :)
First of all i Really appreciate these videos, i do have solar for last 2 years, i installed it by myself and u probably thinking why i still watch these videos right? Well the thing is if you have spent as much time as i did you would want to see who is speaking the truth and who is not, i can guarantee he is speaking the truth. I remember when i saw your last video when you had no net-metering i remember saying to myself “yar ye net-metering krwaen ge to ye full potential pe chale ga na” happy to see you did it. Now, some of the info i would like to share with the creator so he can highlight these points to help you guys in his next video. (My system detail, 5.2kva hybrid inverter with 5280watt solar panels, no batteries)
    1. How many Ac’s can it run without electricity? Well if you have no batteries it can run 1 non-inverter Ac (1 ton). If you start second non inverter Ac, both Ac’s will trip and when they try to restart after 5 min your inverter will trip even at peak time. Now why does it do that? Solar without batteries has a tendency to gradually increase it’s output power like 2000 to 2300 to 2600 to 2900, it happens quickly but it is still not quick enough to power a surge of say 3000watts. Your inverter can handle first surge roughly 1500 to 2000watts by that i mean if you try to operate say a 1 ton non inverter Ac it consumes roughly 1000-1200watts, your first Ac will run without any problem. When you start the second Ac now you are in 2000 to 3000 watt range and your Ac’s will sense power loss and they will trip in load shedding, but your inverter will keep ON. After 5 min your both AC’s will try to restart again as they would normally do, now your inverter will have to provide a surge of approx 2500-3000 at once and since it cant do that, your inverter will trip. (I know the actual surge will be like 3-4 times but this is just for basic understanding).
    2. Now as i said solar alone requires some time to provide power more than e.g 2000watts, but if you have wapda or batteries your inverter can quickly draw current from wapda/batteries and you can power 5200watts of load from your inverter and your inverter will be just fine but your solar can only produce 3500 to 4300 watts (depending on your sys) at peak so its better to stay under 4000 watts other wise your inverter will draw power from wapda and you don’t want that :).
    3. Now you may ask what happens when both non-inverter Ac’s are running when wapda was on and they are consuming lets say 2200 watts combined and power goes off at peak time? Well since your inverter is already powering your Ac’s it does not need to provide surge/jhatka and both your Ac’s will keep on running. Yes i have tested it.
    4. Now you may ask how can he run 4 Ac’s without power? He has batteries right? No thats not the main reason, he is using inverter Ac’s. Inverter Ac’s draw power like 300 to 500 to 800 to 1200 (gradual increase) same as solar needs it to draw. i now have two 1.5 ton inverter AC’s i can power them both with out batteries/wapda. His system is basically two systems of 5.2kva’s, thats why i run 2 Ac’s and he can run 4 and dont take me wrong batteries do help e.g if i am operating both Ac’s and lets say clouds drop solar production what will happen? Well my Ac’s will trip since i dont have wapda/batteries, his wont trip because the inverter will draw power from the batteries.
    5. Second question, What angle do we need to use on solar panels? You will see a lot of solar systems at different angles some high some low and probably wonder why is that? When i was in the process of working/getting info there were no such helpfull videos as above so i had to research all by myself i called a guy from “solar company” and asked him how he finds out the angle? He said we place the panel in sunlight and measure the output current and fix it at maximum output. Now imagine if that guy is fitting a panel in summer the angle will be very low say 15-20 degrees since the sun is almost at the top of your head, now imagine if the same guy is fitting panels in winter, the sun is very low on horizon and he will raise the panel to get maximum output which is around 30-40 degrees and hence all the panels are high. Solar produces maximum power when the sun is at 90 degrees from the face of panel. Whats the best procedure Mr. Genius you may ask? Well you need to change the angle of your panels in winter (high) and in summer (low) to get maximum output but since we are too lazy to do so or some of us have fixed panels probably on a raised platform we cant do that now what? Now you need to have something called “Optimum angle” its close to your latitude. You can easily find your Optimum Angle from websites by searching for your location, its basically a middle ground between 15 degrees and 45 degrees. You can easily measure that angle of your panels with your mobile, place your iphone (built in measure app, switch to level)on the panels and measure its angle to see if its good or not with the optimum angle for your location.
    6. Third question/suggestion. Do you need net metering? YES. Hold on let me think again….THE ANSWER IS STILL YES :) Hidden draw back of net metering and how it works. Net metering works by calculating how many units you used in off-peak time and how many units you exported or sold to wapda and then balancing the figure in credit or debit depending on the usage and they convert the units into Rupees every three months. Now remember your solar will produce 600-700 units (5.2kw system) in a month, you will use some of the units during day time which will not be shown in your meter as they are directly being used from solar to inverter and from inverter, directly to your home, at night you will import units from wapda, and at day time you will export the excess units to wapda the balance of units imported and exported in OFF-PEAK TIME will be calculated 1 unit imported at off-peak time with 1 unit exported at off-peak time, but your Peak Time units will not be cancelled as peak time rates are higher (almost double may be more). Your green meter/net metering meter has the capability to record power usage at peak time and off-peak time, your old meter both digital and analog couldn’t do so(other than 3 phase meter), now when you use 1 unit in peak time 6pm to 10pm (depending on month) they will not balance it with the exported units, they will wait 3 months and then convert the balance of off-peak units lets say 100 credit units and multipy it by export rate which is Rs.9.5/unit now you have a credit of Rs. 950/- but your peak time units of last three months are still pending lets say 50 units per month, now you have to pay for 150 units for last three months. Peak rate lets assume is Rs.16/ unit, 150x16= 2400. If we minus the credit of Rs. 950/- from 2400 now you owe wapda Rs.1450/- see what they did to you? So basically you need 2 exported units to cancel 1 unit used at peak time as of now. Now how can you avoid it? You will need an extra connection/meter (old digital or analog, shouldn’t be three phase) convert your load at peak times to that meter and pay monthly 1000-1500 bill of that meter and save your exports u will probably use 100-200 units in a month and pay minimum charges per unit. Yes its hectic. Another thing is solar will not export during load shedding, its better to switch on Ac’s during load shedding. He is right even in hybrid systems there are inverters which need at least battery bank to operate during load shedding, find an inverter which can run without batteries.
    7. Batteries big misconception. Now imagine you drained your batteries last night to zero (just for argument). Now next day your load is zero and solar is producing at peak i.e 4000 watts. You would imagine that your batteries will charge in no time right? WRONG!!! your batteries need to be safely charged at 10% of the amperage of your battery bank lets assume you have 185Amp 4 tall tubular batteries for 48volt system. You will set your inverter to charge batteries at 20Amps max. You can increase charging amps but it will effect battery life in long run. 20 X 48= 960w, at max charging speed 20X56=1120w so roughly your 4 batteries will take about 1200-1400 watts to charge from your 4000w solar. Now 185/20amps = 9.25 hours thats a rough estimation practically it will take more than that due to losses etc.
Now if you have read through you might be thinking is solar worth it? Yes it is i am using net metering from last sep 2021 and my bill is in credit. But i have managed it its not like you can run Ac’s all the time, its simple math your 5kw system will produce 20-25 units per day. If you are using 1000watts in an hour you are practically using 24 units in a day but when you use ac your consumption will rise. You can invest in bigger system but thats not possible for everyone. Remember its not possible to operate Ac’s on batteries, batteries will drain way too fast and its very costly to build such a big battery bank for Ac’s. However there are Ac’s on the market which you can lock to certain amp’s and the Ac will not consume more than that, you can operate such inverter Ac’s on battery. Batteries operate at optimum level when you draw roughly 400 (ac watts or 8.3dc amps). If you lock your Ac to 3amps it will draw 650 watts.

These are my 2 cents i hope it helps you decide and remove any misconceptions which you may have. Buy solar you wont regret it. To the creator of this video best of luck bro its very helpful keep up the good work. Anyone in need plz feel free to msg me i will try my best to help you guys, and remember the company guy is not always right, he is used to installing systems and you have no information, obviously he has got the upper hand. Every inverter that is rated 5kw will allow panels worth 7000 watts and every inverter rated 12kw will allow panels upto 15000 watts. @@AliHaider-hq4kf to understand this you need an advanced level of research. The only reason that on grid inverters don't work when grid is off is because they do not have reference voltage that they get from grid. To prove this you can add a generator to a solar setup and that generator will provide reference voltage and it will work even when grid is out. Jao jaa ka parho shaahbash.

Thanks a lot Owais!! I am planning to install a 10Kw system and this video has helped me tremendously. Just one question. When have you needed to use the Grid system so how long does it take for the full drawdown of Solar battery before the hybrid reverts to grid? As in another case if you use up full storage during the day and there is not much left in the evening hours...is that sometimes the case? I will greatly appreciate your experience with your system. May Allah SWT bless you with the best of this world for being so transparent and I learned so much from your video. Thank you.

Good video and some good comments as well. I would recommend shaking the batteries now and then, those water levelers are not reliable, at least in my case of Osaka Tubular battery (this is its 5th season & its on last legs, 2-4 hrs backup with 500-300watt load) they do get stuck & give false reading. I open up and check water level inside after 3-4 months.
Also, there is a new trend I found, one ex-colleague also installed it, the trend is to have mix of both ON-Grid and Hybrid inverters, in case of my colleague, it was 10KW ON-Grid and 5KW Hybrid with batteries. I am told following two main reasons for it,
    1. ON-Grid inverters from Germany (Europe) can be bought at cheaper rates compared to hybrid from europe & China Hybrid inverters are not reliable for ON-Grid export working at full capacity.
    2. This mix system allows more capacity of Solar Panels to be installed when going net metering & give me benefit.
But my main issue with this system is, you get stuck with 5KW capacity when WAPDA isn't coming, & unlike you people can't run majority of home load during load shedding.
Can you make a video on it?
