i don’t want to get too emotional or anything but i think y’all saved my life. i was on the verge of losing the love of my life, as well as my own life. i didn’t eat more than a meal a day and lost 25lbs in a single week. i was at the point where i had already written a letter for everyone i love. i simply had no desire to keep living. but with your videos (and a particular plant) i was able to slow down all the overwhelming thoughts and finally realize i just needed to better myself step by step. i’m still on that process but i just wanted to say thanks. i believe in giving people their flowers while they’re still around :)

Lol yes he was talking about Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, he was saying that's the only father he knew watching him growing up which is true for lots of us growing up. Hate to mention him but his impact can't be denied but Bill Cosby on Cosby show and Uncle Phil were the greatest influences for some of us we got to see black men portrayed as great fathers as well as being great husband's family men and SUCCESSFUL as well. They weren't low level poverty stricken and that's all the shows about them struggling black men. They were doctors and lawyers and both Cosby and Phil wives were teachers, and it wasn't shown to us as these successful black men won the lottery and are rare specimens no they were shown as normal because it shouldn't be considered rare for black men to be successful and great husband's and fathers it's more common than is let on throughout society but media in particular wasn't fond of showing it and media is big on forming images of people. That 1 line is so simple but resonates so profoundly to us because "you're the only father I ever knew" was true for many of us.

I'm only a few minutes into the video, but I thought it would be important to comment that Uncle Phil is the Uncle that Will Smith's character on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" goes to live with. I've been looking at your videos here lately, recovering from a ankle surgery. This is definitely awesome to see someone from a different cloth dabble into the culture to understand. Even if it's just the music side. For some advice, when you listen to such poetry have rap genius lyrics or google the lines. The references are much more deeper than the surface. The metaphors, symbolisms, the rhyme scheme all matters to understand when an artist platforms their words to a beat. (Just to touch the surface) Rap (Rhythm And Poetry). Oh, and if you never seen the fresh prince original series, definitely check it out. The reason artist like J. Cole is championed in our community is that the message he send in most of his work can be felt by our community. Simular experience, similar emotions, action, decisions , and thoughts that we share. Though some words may be boring to your ears, it's endearing to others. Right or wrong, it's culture that's been created and curated. Following an artist, your able to see and feel their growth. Just like a pastor at a church, a message may touch a particular group or person different than someone who hasn't experienced what the pastor/preacher has preached. Great take and review, looking forward to following for more content 🔥🙌🏾💯

The song is about receiving long-awaited fame and acclaim but when you finally get it the same people brining you up bring you down. No role models dives into Coles journey into Hollywood and the political game that comes with record labels, influence, and as said having a famous name. It is a very interesting concept that many artists struggle to show thier viewers.

    i dont think he understands
first of all uncle phil is a reference to fresh prince
and he talks about how he came this far without anyone to look up to
he doesnt mean most of the shit he said about women
and what makes me sad is that he is trying to portray j cole as a desire driven psychopath who went down a crazy path because he had no role models and that itself might drive people to hate the song and not see it for what it really is
J Cole is a very intelligent rapper and is unlike any other rapper out there in regards to his fortune and fame, he has set morals for them and i have nothing but respect for him not just as a master lyricist but as a human being so i cant just sit by and let this guy tarnish his name

Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in other words he had no role models in his life so he had to turn to a TV character who lives in a fantasy world. Kind of reminds me of Jim Carrey's character from the movie The Cable Guy who also was raised by the TV due to not having role models in his life.

It’s some cultural references in this one lol You would have to know where they come from to understand the lyrics. For emails, Uncle Phil was the uncle in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The line where he says “Sorry I’m never coming home imma stay for good” This is a reference to a scene in Harlem Nights (Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor film) where a husband recently got with this woman named Sunshine. After being with Sunshine he calls his wife and tells her that he’s never coming home.

Also, the album this song is on like a story he tells. This was when he got a taste of fame and wilds out. But it's a great story and he does eventually find himself and his way

Definitely recommend listening to a song off of his album right after this one, “4 your eyes only” he matured a lot on that album, and the subject matter is much deeper
