Although the Perry Mason TV show did not start until 1957 (which might indicate that the writers goofed up yet again), there was a Perry Mason radio show in 1943 and some novels and movies in the 1930s...

+Carl Napp yea, hardly remembered these days..he had a wife and 2 children at the time..where are they?..no one from his family has ever said anything about him,,some acting friends have said his death was suspicious....i'd like someone in the states open a case to find out what really happened to joe..a good documentary would be good..with his children commenting..theyve all shot through..no comments.the man was very fluent with his language..one of the all time best character actors..frank sutton (sgt carter)died the same year,1974

***** I think you are right.
What is mentioned in Wikipedia really seems
strange. Joe Flynn was everything else than a
      fopdoodle.
About "Gomer Pyle, USMC". To me Frank sutton was the headliner.
James Beck from "Dad's Army" also died
      strange, suddenly and period!
Be that as it may. There were many lovely
      TV series, especially from UK.

+Carl Napp yea that was a shocker about james beck..dads army..excellent show, with frasier telling his ghost stories..its whats lacking these character actors..blakey from on the buses..the young people have caught up with on the buses ...theres a lot comments ,on the show..one can learn a lot of script writing techniques ,formats by watching these 50 plus year shows.

I thought this slapstick humour would be too outdated and tiresome but it's proved to be refreshingly naive and rather funny. I have watched, at least, 20 episodes so far. Most entertaining. Thank you for the chance to watch Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway at their funniest with Joe Flynn being at the brunt of all their jokes. What a treat!

There were novels and movies in the 1930s and a radio show in 1943... Whether the writers of the show knew about this or not is an entirely different question... 4 or 5 times during the series, usually at episodes end, Flynn tosses in throwaway lines about Borgnine
winning an Oscar, usually something like "some Oscar winner, you call that acting?"
You boys think you are fans? Try this trivia query, I bet none of you get it:
In what episode does Borgnine/Conway do a takeoff of one of the most famous scenes from Marty?

    • @JV-pu8kx
      @JV-pu8kx 3 роки тому

Borgnine originally did not want to do television. He changed his mind when he found out that people did not know who he was, despite having won an Oscar. Being in a television series would fix that.

The problem I had with McHale's Navy was the lack of racial diversity. The U.S. military in TV sitcoms was always integrated, even in the 1950's with" Sgt. Bilko" and with military episodes of the The Andy Griffith Show. The military was certainly one place that wasn't restricted to "Whites only."

Yea, too bad in the 1960's they didn't live up to your racial expectations....

Might be because PTs weren't integrated. Even in the deep water Navy in WWII wasn't really integrated, blacks being restricted to certain rates such cooks/bakers, engine room, etc.

I guess just like at Harvard, and academia in general, Fuji is the 'wrong kind' of racial diversity, even though the Chinese were slaves in California in the 1800s, and even as late as the 1940s Japanese - Americans were imprisoned in internment camps.

Ever wonder why McHale et al do not wear any identification or medals on their uniforms? Not sure, but I think the studio was denied that by the Navy Dept. Correct me if I'm wrong.
