My $2K budget system is: Shiit Bifrost 2/64 > Jotunheim 2 > ATH MSR7B. Silver XLR and headphone cables. Oyaide power cables. Also use Verum 1 and Sony MV1 sometime as open back options. Not as good as my speaker setup, but everything sounds amazing.
Really enjoy your reviews and content, very thorough. I just got into headphone listening, and for my first purchase, I bought the sennhieser 660s2 (for $400 US) and an xduoo ta-22 (for $440 US). I'm very happy for using it for late-night bedside listening. I chose the tube/hybrid for my first taste into tube amplification (as opposed to my home audio system, which are class d driven separates). The headphone systems are considerably more affordable, which gives me the option of trying additional amplifiers/dacs in the future for a different sound. May have to try something even more tubey with a better dac.
So glad to hear that you're enjoying the exploration of headphones in addition to your 2-channel setup. There's so much variety to enjoy between both types of listening.
I watched your tier list a while back and saw you gave the Arya Stealth an S tier rating. Recently after weeks of research, I was liking what I heard about it and pulled the trigger at $1259. All I can say is WOW. I was expecting a side-grade from my Focal Clears and in my opinion, got a massive upgrade. First time I've ever really been amazed on my 1.5 year Hifi Journey. I could almost call this end game, paired with my Fiio R7 but maybe next on the list is my DAC/Amp. Thank you!
I love my system myself. Today you can get the headphones cheaper but I went to my local shop lol so: -hifiman He1000 stealth 3100€ -Schiit Lyr+ 699€ -Schiit Modius 229€ -Schiit Lokius 299€ Custom cans braided copper cable 129€ So comes out at close to 4500 bucks and is worth every penny to me ❤
I just subbed to your channel because it's nice to see a fellow Aussie and was hoping to see some localised content with locally available equipment. But why show prices in $US? I'm sick of having to convert in my head...
@@PassionforSound Thanks for your reply. I thought that may be the case... What about AUD on the other corner? Anyway I appreciate your videos regardless. Cheers Paul.
@paulleon249 I'll see what I can do. It just adds an extra layer of research in a very tight schedule and can cause confusion for people when the local prices don't always add up compared to the USD. I'm yet to find a good solution that I'm happy with.
I'm using Arya Stealths with a magni-modi setup and it sounds great! Personally, i think that the main bulk of your budget should be spent on the headphones, but that's just my point of view.
@@luigiheewan i have tried some $1.5k headphones. With a little EQ, I have found the best phones are in the $350-$500 range. Some of the more expensive ones were not as good IMHO and tends to be too heavy.
All headphones are different so I wouldn't recommend defining best and worst by price category. The good thing is that there are excellent headphones in EVERY price category. 🙂
Good afternoon from Toronto ☕️ I sent your video to some of my friends who are thinking of getting the HeadFi hobby. I’m good as I’ve reached a level that for me is comfortable and give me a performance 🎭 that I love. Great video 👍
Currently using the Mese 99 Neo on a 25 year old Creek OBH-11 headphone amp, but I'm planning on updating that and DAC next month. Likely the Schiit Modius and Midgard, or the Asgaard 3 with the built in DAC depending on what you think of the new "fixed" one with 2V or what it was.
Headphones and me don't go together very well. I do have phones and a couple of amps. But i have a bit of tinnitus in right ear that comes and goes. But phones are guaranteed to set it off.
Maybe it's the inflammation that's causing it? That would explain the haphazard nature of the occurring tinnitus. I used to have tinnitus occasionally, but no longer as I reduced the inflammation in my body.
After all these years Im still a huge fan of the Monoprice M1060. I tried other recommendations in the price range like Sivga and Fostex (~200-300$) and that set of planars blew everything out of the water. Big recommend.
Liked and subscribed, sir! I love your content, i also happen to have a question. I got DT 880 250ohm for Christmas, what would i need to power those up? Some ppl recommended me the Fiio K11 R2R, but i'd love to hear ur suggestion as well :) Happy holidays!!
Geshelli dac with aune s17 is really really orgasmic and my end game system. I am thinking of putting together a speaker system maybe with KEF or Q acoustic with cambridge A B amp
Hmm. Schiit 2/64 or GS Labs J2S? I do like the opamp rolling option. I currently have the 2/64 so its a matter of being able to customize the output stage I'd think.
Yeah, that's a tough call! With the Sparkos Pro or Burson V7s, the J2S can maybe catch the BF264, but I'd maybe stick to the BF264 if that's what you already have
This is awesome, Lachlan, but you probably have opened a can of worms! EVERYONE is going to have a different opinion on what's better at each tier LOL! In my case, I do like your choices even if I could come up with other alternatives. What surprises me is how fast we leave behind gear that was once a darling for many. I still have the original SU-9 and I still think it's a great DAC; and it hurts that although you have Schiit products in mind, you didn't look back at the Yotunheim amp and for headphones, looking at Hifiman, the Edition XS was once a favorite. Thank you for this, a great guide for both beginners and those looking for a change in flavors.
My pleasure and I agree with you about the older gear. I've actually already produced the 5k to 15k version of this and it includes a now out-of-state product that's still brilliant just as you're suggesting.
my 1.000$/€ setup is a little bit less common: I went for a DacAmp - with AKM 4499 - the Fiio K9 AKM. And for the headphone I was considering your recommended Sennheiser 660S2, but went for the beyerdynamic Amiron Home instead (I'm somewhat a beyerdynamic guy as I also enjoy the superior build-quality). Setup is for daily use, enjoying music and some gaming.
Hey, trying to find a headphone amp to power my Supermix 4s as well as headphones (which might get upgraded later on to higher ohms) I already have a DAC, well an audio interface "goXLR mini" but it produces hiss on my IEMs and I might as well get a desk amp. I've limited or googled around to see myself against two options, Schiit Magni and Topping L30, going for 175 euros and 90 euros. Which would you recommend? Am I losing out on that much between the two to justify paying the 85+ euros?
I am confused. I thought you got the best results when using a valve amp with higher impedance headphones (like the 300ohm HD6XX), not with very low impedance planars (like the 14ohm Ananda Nano).
For an OTL amp like an xDuoo TA-26S, that's true, but hybrid tube amps use a tube at the input and solid state at the output so they'll work with every headphone.
Technology is so good these days, audiophiles today have no idea how far head-fi has come, it's just astounding what has happened in 15 years. Anything before that is dinosaurs, honestly I can't image head-fi without planar magnetics.
@@PassionforSound ok, thank you. I mean, I realized this one doesn’t have bt, I was just wondering if there was a way to stream TO this stack. I figured it out though. Cheers :)
I probably won't be able to afford it , but I am interested to know what you would pick for pretty much money no object. This was a great video, thanks.
curious what you guys think. I have a denafrips ares DAC fed by a minidsp shd streamer. that goes to a schiit freya+ preamp then out to my emotiva amp. this is my two channel set up. i wanted to use headphones too so i added a schiit vali 2++ to allow for a dedicated headphone jack with some decent amplification (the Freya+ adds significant gain). Its great. My cans are Fidelio 2nd gen. They sound good but was wondering if I could benefit from an upgrade. Any thoughts?
The Fidelios are nice, but there are some significant upgrades out there depending on your budget. Don't go overboard because the Vali 2 will be a limiting factor at some point, but tell us your sonic preferences and budget and let's see what might be good.
@@PassionforSound my budget is sub $500 and as far as sonics are concerned, since i have an all tube set up, im thinking that something more analytical would work, help balance out the warm sound coming from the NOS tubes but i can drive anything with the Freya in the chain. I also use an analog eq so i have variability
If I will get Sony MDR-Z1R, iBasso D16/DC-Elite, should I get a very slim player for the high res music storage and just spend on 256gb of iphone storage or spend on the 512gb of the iPhone storage as the player and storage as well which has less things to charge too?
The MDR-Z1R is amazing and one of my all time favourite headphones. As for which path to go down for your source, I think both can sound great, but you'd want a decent dongle DAC with the iPhone to get good sound quality so it depends if you're happy to run a dongle from your phone or if you'd rather keep it free and have your music all on a separate device. Sonically, both can perform very well
@@Tssukiiithere’s one on headfi for $3250 right now in black for a combo of bravura headphone and matching Sonoma Dac/amp. I’d offer $3k even and see how it goes. You just need to watch for them
I'm pretty sure the Zen DAC technically has enough power so it might be something else that's going on. What is it about the sound that's making you think it's under powered?
@PassionforSound when i turn it up on the unbalanced side it starts distorting when all most at max and on the balanced side less than half it distorts and sound gets congested. I used 3.5mm to 4. 4mm adapter is that wrong? To use adapter instead of using a whole new balanced cable? Im new to audiophile
@rmika9229 yep, don't adapt a balanced output to a single ended connection. It can do damage. You can adapt a headphone with balanced plug (e.g. 4.4mm or 4-pin XLR) to connect to a single ended output like 6.3mm, but going the other way is risky.
@@PassionforSound thanks for the fast answer! What about the Bass region? I would love to watch movies with them too but I am kind of concerned coming from the HD 58X Jubilee wich are kind of lacking in the deeper bass region. I dont want a bass boost, just consistent bass with no steep roll off.
When you have a fixed budget, the question is always whether it's worth investing more money in headphones or the DAC/AMP combination. In my experience, the improvement in sound is greater with headphones in the price range up to 500 dollars/euro than with a headphone amplifier. There are quite clear jumps here, whether you pay 100/300/500, whereas good amplifiers are available for around 200-300. To get a clearly noticeable difference here, you'd have to spend around 2000. I'm therefore more willing to spend more on headphones.
I partly agree with this in the sense that the gains from a better headphone are greater, but only to a point. There's also a significant difference between a $200-300 amp and something like a Geshelli Labs A3 Pro or Aune S17 Pro. $200 Topping/SMSL to $500 Topping/SMSL, not so much.
The least of my systems is Topping E50/L50, with either a HD6XX or occasionally my Hifiman Edition XS. If it were my only system for some reason I'd still not be complaining about it. We're so spoiled (mostly in a good way).
Got the Ifi Neo idsd 2 and Hifiman Arya Stealth brand new for 1500$ on sales :) Considering upgrading to HE1000SE via Hifimans upgrade program. Would it be worth it you think? 1350$ Investment.
I think it is. I had an Arya Stealth for 2 years before the HEK Stealth released. a major upgrade considering it was a $3000 headphone. Definitely check it out.
There're now the 189$ magni unity, and it sounded just as good if not better than the l50/e50 stack imo(and the topping stack aren't even measured that better). When did schiit become budget and topping become kinda over price? With that money save, you can get a hd6xx or a sundara, moondrop para, fostex t60rp instead, which are all better than he400se imo.
what an odd take.. love or hate the topping gear but pretty much nothing measures in the same ballpark as it does and with something like an L30 you pretty much have all the headphone amp you'll ever need for peanuts...
@@ianwilliams7740 I have an a90d here, just because I got that brand new for 280$ on a flash sale and I wouldn't pay more. That being said, schiit stuff does get real close in measurement to l30, like 118 vs 121 in sinad. Not to mention the l30 got like 1w@32ohm in asr testing, vs 2.5w on magni, who's better now? Furthermore there're a shit ton of l30 failure, my friend got his headphone fry thanks to that l30, many more you can look up on forums, and it's still more expensive than a currently discounted to 59$ magni heretic on schiit website. Topping, especially the cheaper stuff not overpriced how, please convince me.
@@PassionforSound gotta say, schiit stuff is getting real cheap especially when compared to topping, you can't convinced me getting anything from topping less than a l70(which is an a90 with relay volume that can be a preamp with a remote, which make it a good deal) that isn't replaceable with a 59$ magni heretic(it's currently on sale at that price on schiit website), even the newest 220$ a50 iii, which is a upgrade from l50, doesn't justify it price compared to the magni ngl, and if you want balanced preamp function, there's the midgard at that price, measure just as good but with more power(and halo feature).
I think generalising any brand is dangerous and each product should be evaluated on its own merits. Schiit, Topping, Geshelli, Burson, SMSL, etc. are all capable of outputting a mediocre next product even if the ones before were brilliant.
You'd get way better sound going with a superior headphone like an arya organic and cheap $150 dongle than all those overpriced amp/dac combo and cheap headphones. And still have money left over for some stripper actions in vegas..
I really appreciate a video like this. My ONLY complaint (and this is probably more personal preference than anything else) is that I try to steer clear of Chinese hifi products as they're usually clones / stolen designs from other companies. So things like ths SMSL SU-9, Topping E50...even the Edition XS... though great they may sound, may have came at the cost of scalping someone else's engineering, and are priced to undercut. Does anyone else feel weird buying these brands?
The idea that the Chinese products are all clones is based on some old examples and is an over generalisation. There are brilliant and original products, and there are less brilliant/mediocre products from both China and the US, UK, and every other country. It's all about choosing the products on their individual merits, IMO. Of course, everyone is 100% entitled to buy what they feel good about. I'm just sharing this for some broader context. 🙂
I have the Topping E50 and had the Edition XS, and now I find them quite lacking in many regards, one of which is enjoyment. They just sounded rather lifeless together. I think it's the E50 worsening the issue because it seems flat and lifeless with no soundstage. I have a Chord Mojo 2 for comparison, and it's light years ahead of the L50/E50.
so, in "private" you are announcing that you quit. but, we have to pay to find out why, and in the meantime you publish more vidéo's, well i hope you don't quit, but i see this as a way to seek attention.
That's such a variable area because everyone had different needs for their source. It could be vinyl, CD, PC, Mac, streamer, TV, etc. too hard to narrow down.
I really dislike this new editing style, there was something less anxiety-inducing about the older more calm minimal editing. But maybe that's just me...
I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, there's a balance to find between the older approach and the one that keeps people engaged. This approach is performing way better. I'm still adjusting a bit to the new approach and will be experimenting a bit so I'll see what I can do...

I can vouch for the Geshelli products. Just got the Erish 3 Amp to stack with my J2S AK4499 & Sparkos Op amps DAC. Great Bang for the Buck
I'm excited to try the E3 soon!
nice review and your editing has gone a couple of notches up - great work
Thank you! I'm glad you like it!!
Hifiman xs is currently being sold for $350 on Amazon so maybe try that over the sivga to save money
I'm not personally a fan of the XS' very flat soundstage. I also think it's significantly less comfortable, but I know many people like it.
Edition XS is an amazing headphone combined with lambskin ear pads which improve the sound in all aspects.
Thank you!
So glad you're loving them. Congratulations!
I love my system myself. Today you can get the headphones cheaper but I went to my local shop lol so:
-hifiman He1000 stealth 3100€
-Schiit Lyr+ 699€
-Schiit Modius 229€
-Schiit Lokius 299€
Custom cans braided copper cable 129€
So comes out at close to 4500 bucks and is worth every penny to me ❤
I'm so glad you're enjoying your setup so much. Congratulations
I just subbed to your channel because it's nice to see a fellow Aussie and was hoping to see some localised content with locally available equipment. But why show prices in $US? I'm sick of having to convert in my head...
Thanks for the sub and sorry about the pricing. I price in USD because my audience is global and USD is the most globally recognised currency.
Good afternoon from Toronto ☕️
I sent your video to some of my friends who are thinking of getting the HeadFi hobby.
I’m good as I’ve reached a level that for me is comfortable and give me a performance 🎭 that I love.
Great video 👍
Thanks for sharing! I'm glad.ypu liked the video and that you're enjoying your system as it is! ♥️🎧🎶
Sorry to hear that! Tinnitus can be a real hassle
Maybe it's the inflammation that's causing it? That would explain the haphazard nature of the occurring tinnitus. I used to have tinnitus occasionally, but no longer as I reduced the inflammation in my body.
Yes, inflammation and even muscle tightness/spinal alignment can influence tinnitus (ask me how I know 😁)
@@PassionforSound How do you know? 😂
Ummm, I read it in a pamphlet somewhere... 😉😂
After all these years Im still a huge fan of the Monoprice M1060. I tried other recommendations in the price range like Sivga and Fostex (~200-300$) and that set of planars blew everything out of the water. Big recommend.
Thank you for this video. 👍
My pleasure!
New to all this. How do you get the signal from the (presumably) phone or computer to the dac?
A USB cable is normally the simplest approach. Some motherboards have optical or RCA digital outputs, but USB is the most consistently available.
Liked and subscribed, sir! I love your content, i also happen to have a question. I got DT 880 250ohm for Christmas, what would i need to power those up? Some ppl recommended me the Fiio K11 R2R, but i'd love to hear ur suggestion as well :) Happy holidays!!
I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. I've replied on your other comment with a couple of ideas and a question.
Geshelli dac with aune s17 is really really orgasmic and my end game system. I am thinking of putting together a speaker system maybe with KEF or Q acoustic with cambridge A B amp
The schiit stack supports hi res audio correct ?
Up to 192kHz 🙂
I've actually already produced the 5k to 15k version of this and it includes a now out-of-state product that's still brilliant just as you're suggesting.
what's the difference between the new Magni and the Magni Plus ?
I haven't tried the new one or looked deeply into it - sorry
Did you do the $2000+ setups?
I did this one. It's beyond $2000 but it might be what you're after: ua-cam.com/video/hRX1Af6nT-I/v-deo.html
@@PassionforSound I did find that but too pricey!
@MadelnMachines sorry. Haven't done the middle ground yet.
my 1.000$/€ setup is a little bit less common: I went for a DacAmp - with AKM 4499 - the Fiio K9 AKM. And for the headphone I was considering your recommended Sennheiser 660S2, but went for the beyerdynamic Amiron Home instead (I'm somewhat a beyerdynamic guy as I also enjoy the superior build-quality).
Setup is for daily use, enjoying music and some gaming.
Sounds like a lovely setup!
What do you think about Bifrost 2 OG + Bottlehead Crack + HD6X0 used for under 1k?
That's a wonderful setup!
With the first setup, what do you think of pairing the amp/dac with the beyerdynamic dt 1990 pros?
That would be a great setup if you enjoy the 1990s
Hey, trying to find a headphone amp to power my Supermix 4s as well as headphones (which might get upgraded later on to higher ohms)
I already have a DAC, well an audio interface "goXLR mini" but it produces hiss on my IEMs and I might as well get a desk amp. I've limited or googled around to see myself against two options, Schiit Magni and Topping L30, going for 175 euros and 90 euros. Which would you recommend? Am I losing out on that much between the two to justify paying the 85+ euros?
The L30 is fine, but it lacks some transparency and dynamics compared to the Magni so I'd personally go for the Magni.
Stupid question probably, but is there a way to stream Bluetooth to the Magni/Modi? Thanks!
Not a stupid question because many DACs include Bluetooth, but the Modi doesn't. You'd need to find a different solution on this occasion.
@@PassionforSound ok, thank you. I mean, I realized this one doesn’t have bt, I was just wondering if there was a way to stream TO this stack. I figured it out though. Cheers :)
What did you come up with?
@@PassionforSound I’ll have to add some kind of streamer. Looking at Wiim, but not convinced yet. I like that it works with Alexa, though.
The WiiM Pro would be a great addition with the Modi.
I probably won't be able to afford it , but I am interested to know what you would pick for pretty much money no object. This was a great video, thanks.
Glad you liked this one. I've got the 5k to 15k version coming soon...
Hello ! With what would you pair a chord mojo 2 with ? Do you think there is a little dac better than this at the same price of lower ? Thanks
Mojo 2 is amazing and will pair well with just about anything. Nothing else really comes close to its sound for less.
curious what you guys think.
Maybe check out the Sivga SV023: ua-cam.com/video/mrhuoSb_Gbk/v-deo.htmlsi=VsvNasNqRRl7P2wF
The Drop + Hifiman is available for $49 at Drop.
Oh wow! That's insanely good value now.
If I will get Sony MDR-Z1R, iBasso D16/DC-Elite, should I get a very slim player for the high res music storage and just spend on 256gb of iphone storage or spend on the 512gb of the iPhone storage as the player and storage as well which has less things to charge too?
And planar headphone seem like a lot praise, how is the one in this video console to Sony close back MDR-Z1R
Sonically, both can perform very well
@PassionforSound ok I see, do you think D16 is too much for Sony MDR-Z1R or it will still provide better sound quality compare to DC-ELITE?
@NetvoTV I don't know the iBasso gear to comment. Sorry.
Love this type of content with an entire chain. Anyone with a budget of $3k check out the Warwick bravura used. It’s a fantastic estat aio setup
That's a great idea to get those used at that price!
Where do you get one used for 3k?
@@Tssukiiithere’s one on headfi for $3250 right now in black for a combo of bravura headphone and matching Sonoma Dac/amp. I’d offer $3k even and see how it goes. You just need to watch for them
@@aceofspades6667 Good luck! I’d instantly buy it at that price but I need one shipped to Germany sadly
I have hifiman he400se my ifi zen dac v2 seems to be to weak to power any recommendations? Tia new zealand watcher
Verum 2 vs Ananda Nano and why?
could get both for roughly the same but i would start with the Topping DX3 Pro+ wich i currently own
That's a tough one! I slightly prefer the Verum 2 because it's not as spicy in the treble and you can roll pads really easily to tweak the sound.
@pascal3026 just use the vented pads and you'll be all good 🙂
They have excellent bass extension - just not boosted bass.
Schiit and Geshelli nned to come to the UK. Topping etc are easy to find.
Yes, I agree! It can be harder to get both brands affordably outside of the US
Hifiman 400 SE can be had for $99 (109 minus 10%)
I am quite happy with my Hifiman EF400 and Arya Organic.
I thought the Arya Organic was amazing!
That would be a great setup!
The least of my systems is Topping E50/L50, with either a HD6XX or occasionally my Hifiman Edition XS. If it were my only system for some reason I'd still not be complaining about it. We're so spoiled (mostly in a good way).
We really are! There's so much good gear at every price level.
Yep, I'd agree. Definitely worth the update!
Hifiman HE400SE China Edition - $75; AYIMA DAC-A5 MAX - $60
Thank you very much
Audio is not expensive. In face, i canont think of any other gear hobby where you can start for 500 USD. Try racing cars, horses or yachts.
Generally, the Schiit gear tends to consistently sound as good or better. The Topping gear swings from great to mediocre.
11:21 No Limit ..DCS LINA FULL HOUSE STACK ..or BRAVARA 😎
You'd get way better sound going with a superior headphone like an arya organic and cheap $150 dongle than all those overpriced amp/dac combo and cheap headphones. And still have money left over for some stripper actions in vegas..
Just in case you dont have enough adds on the internet. Here's an 11:31min video of more adds.
Please do another video like this, but in the range of 5k to 10k USD. Peace.
5k to 15k is coming soon! 🙂🙂
I’m not sure this is how I’d split the 2k budget.
Schiit Modius -> Schiit Jotunheim -> Sennheiser HD6XX and call it a day under $1k
I love this video.
♥️
I really appreciate a video like this. My ONLY complaint (and this is probably more personal preference than anything else) is that I try to steer clear of Chinese hifi products as they're usually clones / stolen designs from other companies. So things like ths SMSL SU-9, Topping E50...even the Edition XS... though great they may sound, may have came at the cost of scalping someone else's engineering, and are priced to undercut. Does anyone else feel weird buying these brands?
These are basically my reasons for going Schiit Audio for my electronics.
@@LordWaterBottle Geshelli Labs is also US. Burson is Australia (love them).
Yep, the custom filtering in the Mojo 2 sets it apart from almost everything else on the market (at or below the same price).
Affordable Schiit products got vile qc

Haha. Wait till you see the video then...
Why does every audiophile setup video talk about Headphones, Dacs, and Amps, but never says anything about the source?
That's such a variable area because everyone had different needs for their source. It could be vinyl, CD, PC, Mac, streamer, TV, etc. too hard to narrow down.
The headphones are $109.
Even better! Price drop!
