I live in Miami, Fl. Our home prices are very similar but we do not have the homeless situation that Oakland has.

Hi @Kay! Not sure what happened to some of my old comments, but if you are OK living near student housing, you can find better deals or shared housing near the UC Campus. Are you looking for a 1/1, 2/1 or studio? Amenities? Budget? feel free to email me!

So what about studio apts? Are there any whatsoever for less than $1000?

Hi @jc76 there are some older studio apartments or in-law units I've seen posted for around $950 to 1,000. I can speak to the condition..... But if I were looking for a studio at that price, I would look for single family homes renting their in-law/ADU units.

Amazing video, very informative. Me and my wife are planning to move from NYC to the Bay Area and I am very curious about Oakland. We would like to stay there for a month or so just to feel if we like it or not. What would be the best way to do it? Airbnb? Is it easy to find a rental unit paying month to month? What do you think? I would love to hear suggestions. Have a good day and again great video!

Hi Andrés, great! An early welcome to the East Bay. I do recommend staying in an AirBnB because it would be less red tape than trying to find a sublet or a month-to-month rental. There were quite a few subleases on Craigslist at the beginning of SIP, but the ones I've seen on CG and FB Groups lately have been rooms inside homes, shared with others. Let me know if you want info on specific neighborhoods. Lake Merritt, Temescal, Bushrod, Santa Fe, Gaskill, Laurel District (Laurel is further east from downtown though) are all good places to check out. Depends on what vibe you and your wife want. Hopefully more things will be open when you and your wife decide to explore. Feel free to email or call me with more Qs.

Most expensive but most very very dirty...so what's happening here?

I would presume that the city thinks it's cheaper to pay for mass occassional cleanups of dumping than it is to provide more trash recycling receptacles.....among other things. Cities like El Cerrito have well-managed sites for getting rid of waste. I can't say the same for Oakland. I've also witnessed plenty of folks dumping major household items in front of the encampments because they think they are helping.

Citizens that rent that's low income can barely afford rent the city needs to do something about it because Section 8 has been closed for a long time that's one of the reasons why there's a lot of people that's homeless number two different people that's not from the US have brought apartments and houses they are some of them are slum landlords
people that's having trouble with the landlords not fixing nothing entering apartment when the tenant are not there that's no good erasing up the rent during the time of the covid-19 that's not good tenants right told me no rent was supposed to be raised up during time covid-19 is going on some people that had rent raised need to talk with housing rights
which is tenants right and rent control to reduce the the rent then they have a crazy policy where the low income must be making three
times the rent how can they when they're on a fixed income from the government that's been a big problem since we've been here I've been here since 1976 My relatives have been here in Oakland California since 1969 and 1 relative have been here since 1942 they both own homes I'm in a nice area but my owners are not from the US they think they can do as they want to do enter into my apartment are different tenant's apartment without a notice that's not legal Once Upon a Time in East Oakland and in West
Oakland the streets was cleaner this is the home of the Raiders Benjamin
Davis played here he was a Raiders this it's where Reggie Jackson play baseball we have a few rhythm and blues celebrities that's from Oakland and Rappers that's from Oakland it was once upon a time a great place and I think it's still great just need some improvement with housing tenants rights advocates and different advocates for different situations

@mary thomas. Yeah, it's really messed up. The waitlist has been closed forever, and when I've tried to get a sense of when they are opening again, the folks at the city's housing center claim to not know when. There is a similar issue with the senior housing waitlist (it can take up to 2 years to get placement). I only expect the problem to worsen as lower to middle income baby boomers age out of their current housing.
And you are absolutely right that there is not enough low to moderate income housing being built. The city is supposed to be using development impact fees to construct such units, but very very few single family homes have been built by Hello Housing, and Hello Housing requirements are so limiting (requires "x" number of family members to be on the application with an income that wouldn't even qualify them for the price of the "affordable" house).

No way wtfff so I have to take the bus to work everyday to San Francisco???? What a rip-off.... thankfully I'll be living in an RV to offset the cost of housing.. No wonder there's currently an exodus from California.
