I've never seen Johnny crack up so much and so hard. Not only because Winters was so funny, but you could tell Johnny genuinely loved him.

Both Midwestern boys (Carson from Nebraska, Winters from Ohio), as of course are Dave Letterman (Indiana) and Dick Cavett (also Nebraska, who met Johnny as a child when Carson was a local magician)

I've watched Carson a lot, and I've always thought that two guys really had his number, I mean, just a single word or a look would send him into hysterics, and those two guys were Jonathan WInters and Jack Benny. Sure, Don Rickles or Rodney Dangerfield or Robin Williams made him crack up, because they're hilarious, but they had to work for it.
Something about Jonathan Winters and Jack Benny made Johnny Carson disintegrate. Even the smallest thing would do it - he'd be reacting much more than the audience would, as in this clip with Jonathan Winters.
Unfortunately, Jack Benny was hardly ever on the show, so what we have are wonderful jewels like this.
