Look what I found- No, clear ketchup is not real, but was a viral hoax. The clear ketchup video was created by Benji, a London-based data analyst who used hair gel, an empty bottle, and a printer to create the viral video. The hoax was so successful that Heinz employees were asked if the product was real.
I have a Vietnam era entrenching tool that one of my brothers in law gave me. It is rusty from him carrying it the trunk of his car. One of these days I will do a restoration- thanks for the tutorial. I would highly recommend using a face shield while using wire brushes on an angle grinder
Another fine educational post. I was issued a entrenching tool. thru my years in the Army, I only ever used it was in vasic training Ft Dix N.J. Jan 1968. The ketchup bottles was interesting, my last year of high school I worked part time as a short order cook in a restaurant, and I remember seeing the waitresses pouring ketchup from one bottle to a fuller bottle. Also Catsup has evolved into a ketchup, Catsup originally was Muahroom sauce in late 1700s and 1800s.from cold Taxachusetts.
Interesting to see clear ketchup but I think I will stick with the red version. The entrenching tool looks fantastic! This is a wonderful tribute to a veteran. Thanks for sharing this.
Great video as always I watched and looked at the video twice It looks like the rivets are in different locations which stops the tool from fitting in pouch
I remember ketchup bottles being put on top of each other. That’s a while back. I like the idea of shrinking a plastic bottle on the cans. The problem I see is plastic gets brittle and here comes a crack. Your shovel turned out nice. That’s a nice tribute. Great show, thank you
Great advice regarding using the wire brushes. The entrenching tool came out great. The addition of the knife makes an excellent package. What a cool piece of military equipment. The military has so many neat things. 👍
My Dennys story has nothing to do with ketchup. After a night of bar hopping back in the 80's. We stopped at Dennys. I ordered a grand slam, it was missing the sausage. I informed the waitress and she accused me of eating them, I showed her the untouched food and it was clear that no sausage had been on the plate. She then proceeded to search the floor thinking they rolled off. Turns out the cook did indeed forget them and had them waiting. 😅😂
Great job on the shovel. I have one like that also. I like the idea of the p;astic bottle over the pain/stain can. But it would be difficult to stir it if it sat far a while. All muddy sediment settling on the bottom would be hard to mix I imagine.
ScoutCrafter, I remember the catsup bottles, salt & pepper shakers, and A1 Steak Sauce. I can't remember any photos. The first week of my 5 years in Alaska the lows were hitting -15° F in Anchorage. To stay cozy I recommend; a pair of Sorell style boots with removable felt liners, wool socks, nylon underwear, good mittens from a climbing outfitters, a good stocking cap, a Mustang Classic Survival Jacket, and a pair of Chevron thermal insulated overalls. Hey I think you were on point talking about the rivets on the entrenching tool case. It looks like the rivets on the old case were more to the center whereas the new case they were more to the outside. Anyways, as always a great show. Happy New Year to you and your family. I hope this year brings you more joy and happiness.
ScoutCrafter, IIRC the top snap on your E-Tool case had a black finish. We used to use combat boot black eyelet finish. This stuff came in a small bottle and used to touch up the eyelets on your boots. Worked great for the snaps on your canteen covers E-Tool covers etc. The correct color is the finish on the back hooks that you use to put the E-Tool on your WEB gear
They used to make green ketchup for St Patrick's day. Tasted the same as regular if you didn't look at it. Your brain couldn't let you taste it correctly when it saw the green color. Nice job on the entrenching tool.
Great stuff. I love those old entrenching tools. They were made so well and very durable. Every time I find one for a decent price, I pick them up, I think I have two or three. Thanks so much for sure and have yourself a great day.
Nice tribute to your friends brother and fellow veteran with the e-tool. 😄👍🏻🇺🇲 If I could find the way back machine, I could get you a picture. That was part of my dishwashers career when I was in H.S. I miss those glass bottles and real ingredients that they had back then. I personally dislike todays ketchup bottles.
Thanks John, I was going to say is this 1st April - clear ketchup - that can't be for real ? The other thing they used to do here with the ketchup was to thin it down with vinegar, maybe to help transfer it, but if you weren't careful instead of having to whack it you got a plate full of sauce ! Lovely job on the entrenching tool, that design with the pick is like the one in my Action Man (Uk version of GI Joe) "Special Operations Kit", I've still got it somewhere in the attic !
Hi John. Great job on that tshovel. I also think the rivets are in the wrong place. I'm not sure about that clear ketchup though 😮. My mother used to do that to get every last drop from the empty bottle 😅. Have a great week. Week. 👍👍❤...
It’s too funny that you mention the ketchup bottles because this morning I did the very same thing with my laundry detergent and fabric softener since the new bottles only come half full I’m always topping them off because I prefer to have a full bottle.
Shrink or stretch fit is something I do quite often with PVC pipe to accommodate the small differences in connections on my woodshop vac system. Every manufacturer seems to make connections different enough to not mate with any other brand. So small sections of PVC pipe and a heat gun shrinks or swells to make things fit. (Swell works much better/easier than the work and sometimes clamps to shrink the pipe to fit. And yes, I have seen ketchup bottles stacked late at night before diners closed. Thanks.
The entrenching tool came out awesome John!! I stocked plenty of the glass bottle ketchup in my day when I worked in the grocery store but never seen them opening to opening. Thank You for sharing.
The entrenching pouch that the tool would not fit in had probably shrunk over time. Not sure if steaming it before stretching it over another entrenching tool would fix it (similar to how they deal with hats that have shrank)
Hey John, I've been using bottles on my paint cans for years and it works well. What I do is start the bottle onto the can and use your heat gun to warm up the bottle up somewhat and then you can fit the bottle over the can, and the use the gun as you did to shrink it afterwards. If you get a little leaking afterwards you can put a hose clamp over it. I haven't had to but..... - later
I wonder about that plastic versus the original in the long run. The plastic wouldn't be airtight and would cause the paint (or stain) to dry out over time. If it's going to be used up quick it may be worth it but not so much in the long run. Very nice job on the entrenching tool. The "forced" sheen looks great. And good choice on the knife.
Hey John , I had the WW2 shovel when I was a kid . Me and my friend built an underground clubhouse . We had an all the scrap wood we wanted from a local wood factory . Good times .
The predecessor of that entrenching tool, the M43, was a direct copy of the entrenching tool the Wehrmacht introduced in 1939. The US Army was not happy with the old M1910 entrenching tool, so they looked for a replacement. They got their hands on a German one, and it was considered being a good design.
My parents used to have a plastic screw on for a heinz bottle so you could screw the 2 bottles together. As for the shovel sheath, maybe if you soaked it you could stretch it to fit.
Happy New Year John! Just remember the de-clogging technique for a bottle of Heinz ketchup: a sharp blow with the palm of your hand directly on the “57” and the fluid dynamics go into action and the ketchup starts flowing almost immediately.
Just a thought, that first entrenching tool holder, is it possible that the material being that old has shrunk, I was wondering if a person was to soak that in warm soapy water or warmed mineral oil, just some type of lubricant to moisturize the canvas then while still damp try to stretch it over the tool and hold tension, like I say, just a thought, don’t know if it would work. Nice job on the tool restoration, looks fantastic, enjoyed watching, BTW, my mother used to do what us kids use to call the catsup bottle poor man’s flip, draining one bottle into another, nothing wasted in our economy, she waitresses for awhile so, that’s where it probably got started.
John, Just wanted to congratulate you for your inclusion on the top UA-cam restoration guy. Not sure if you saw it. I can send you a link if you haven’t. Best Regards, John
Love the entrenching tools. I have one my dad brought home from the service and a newer trifold one from an army surplus. I used my dads as a kid, it was the perfect size. Its all oiled up hanging in my shed. The newer one is in my camp set. Handy tools to have around!
I remember combining ketchup in the 80's, sometimes it would get old enough to ferment and smelled almost like it had vinegar in it. Had to replace peoples fries sometimes because they used it then the fries smelled bad after they smelled it!
The entrenchment tool case could have shrunk when gotten wet is why i didnt think it fit correct but the knife with. Ty he new one set it off very nice
Remember seeing that ketchup flip...I actually had to do that, mid 1980's through about 1990? I was a manager for Long John Silver's...every table had a bottle, and every day, top them off.
A lot of restaurants started using the squeeze bottles as soon as possible. The glass bottles were a recipe for disaster with customers trying to get Ketchup out and getting it all over themselves which ended up with the restaurant giving the meals for free to make up for the mess. Never been a big Ketchup user but I do like it on French Toast.
Nice restrotation! The clear ketchup seems like a AI thing..but for folks that like ketchup on their eggs, it be great, especially if im eating with them😅 i have seen the refill done many times...I washed dishes at a local family restaurant, it was ine of my 3 jobs at the time... never thought much about it til now and wish I had a picture to send...I don't even think I owned a cell phone then..lol good stuff
Interesting fact... The Pittsburgh Steelers stadium used to be called "Heinz field". The end zone was called the red zone and there were giant heinz ketchup bottles that moved like they were pouring when the Steelers scored. It was cool and payed homage to the fact that Heinz used to be a big employer in Pittsburgh. When they lost the naming rights to the stadium, Heinz sponsored a small town high school football field renovation in Alliquippa (where my mother grew up) downstream from Pittsburgh on the Ohio river. So now "Heinz field" is a highschool football stadium! Cool huh?
I think that’s great, years ago sponsorships were a big thing and people had brand loyalty because of things like that. I don’t understand today’s advertising, the last decent advertising I remember was the Budweiser draft horses. 😃👍
I think the PET bottle hack would be good for some liquids, but I can't see it being successful for paint in the long run. How would you stir the paint once it settled and developed a skin on top?
What kind of a maniac would want clear ketchup 😳I was using one of those cup brushes on the frame of my truck. It caught something and I didn’t get hurt but it took out wires going to the brake and tail lights.
Ketchup needs to be red. I know mushroom was first and banana was used during war shortages but even the banana they dye it red. As to the entrenching tool. Nicely done. For all people saying that because it folds, it's weak although I haven't heard of it breaking on regular GIs which says a lot. It was one of WW2 soldiers top 5 items.
John do you think it is possible due the placement of the rivets in the one shovel case it is keeping it from going down as it should? If you look at it the rivets are placed further in on that case than the other one those are spaced our further or they appear to be or that is how it looked on camera.
When I first saw that clear Ketchup online I thought it was a joke but maybe it’s not 😂 but I don’t want it 😆 anyway very nice job on that tool and thankfully you got it to fit in the other case 👍
I don’t know the strength. All these etching and prep concoctions that use Phosphoric acid look similar but they might have different strengths. It smells like rotten eggs but does work. 😂👍
Great job John, is the fast work acid to etch the steel on a micro level so the paint sticks better? I guess I'm not understanding why you needed to do that before painting. Thanks!
Hi John, I spent about an hour searching for the UA-cam I told you about, but can’t find it not. But you were included with Adam ABomb, Kieth Rucher, jimmy Diresta, Mr. Pete, can’t remember who else. I’ll keep looking but the Podcaster was very complementary of your podcasts.
You can dress for the cold temps. On the other hand when it’s hot there is a moral and legal limit as to how much clothes you can take off and you are still hot.
I was told almost all diners and restraunts use Heinz because its what people know and expect. My girlfriend and I went to a place to eat not that long ago and they had some weird off brand and it tasted like soap and ketchup mixed and was really bad. I would not eat it. I asked and they did not have Heinz so the food sucked. Great re-hab and the USN knife is so cool.
i do remember the two ketchup bottles, one standing on the other bottle. I am still looking for that photo online. I do not think i would ever try the clear ketchup. I think that is too many chemicals and not tomatoes.
Canvas made with natural fibers can shrink over time especially if it gets wet without the tool inside to hold the shape. I suspect that is why the old one won't work anymore.
Great episode! This is the first video of yours I have seen that placed advertisements in the middle. Does that happen automatically after so many views or subscribers?
I’ve been growing clear tomatoes in my backyard for years. I never have eaten them because I can never find them!😂 Seriously, I will never use clear catsup, I’m loyal to Heinz ketchup.
I asked ChatGPT to research, and this is what it said: Heinz has never produced a clear ketchup product. In the early 2000s, they introduced “EZ Squirt” colored ketchups in shades like green, purple, and blue, but these were discontinued by 2006. In late 2023, a viral video depicted a bottle labeled “Heinz Clear Tomato Ketchup.” This sparked curiosity and debate online. However, it was later revealed to be a hoax created by a London-based data analyst known as Benji, who filled a Heinz bottle with hair gel to fabricate the clear ketchup illusion. Heinz has not announced any plans to develop or release a clear ketchup product.
I have a world war 2 entrenching spade marked 1944 and also Ames. Ames must have been a military contractor for a long time. It is the same company that manufactures garden tools, spades, rakes etc. You did a good job with the twisted wire wheel, but they require care because they are really aggressive. I have never used them on tools. Tools require a lighter touch in my opinion. Knotted/twisted wire wheels are great on large areas like car frames. They will make short work of decades of rust and scale because they are coarse and aggressive. But be careful when working on old tools.
A little restaurant in Bethlehem, PA stacked ketchup bottles like that! I went in for breakfast. They were separating the bottles and recapping them. Me, living in PA at the time , but having grown up in Brooklyn, I was gonna put ketchup on my scrambled eggs. I picked up the ketchup. I saw tiny bubbles in the ketchup 😮 I shoulda followed my instincts but I used it anyway. It was the first and last time that I got food poisoning! A really bad case! I was puking for a week! Oy!
Being from Brooklyn you know usually the best Diners here were all run by Greeks. I have found the reason Greeks are so good at running diners is because they didn’t try to save a few cents by messing with their food. Made their money by having more volume of customers instead of sketchy practices. 😃👍
Brian- I believe both- Definitely faster but I believe the warming of the item slowly helps the paint cure as it has a very dry warm environment. Sometimes I cover the item with a box or foil to really increase drying speed. Flat paints dry fast to begin with. 😃👍
A 2 liter bottle will be too big for a small can, but not all soda bottles are the same. A more generic single serve bottle for a brand like Faygo, Dad's, A&W, or any other brand that would use a stock bottle rather than a custom design like for coke or pepsi, is more likely to fit a small paint can.
In line with your "keep it simple" principle, wouldn't it be easier to just decant the paint into an empty soda bottle? Or even better, an empty squeezy ketchup bottle. You can then take a photo of it for Dan.
You’re right! I’ve always seen these videos where they take plastic bottles and shrink them over something and I wonder if there’s an application for us to use in the shop. 🤔. 😂👍
Look what I found- No, clear ketchup is not real, but was a viral hoax. I have a Vietnam era entrenching tool that one of my brothers in law gave me. It is rusty from him carrying it the trunk of his car. One of these days I will do a restoration- thanks for the tutorial. I would highly recommend using a face shield while using wire brushes on an angle grinder
Wire brushes always spit wires! I’m thinking of buying a suit of armor! 🫣😂👍

I cover my smaller paint and stain cans with Seran wrap. It really works well. I got sick of the lids getting stuck in dried paint and residue.
I worked at Dennys in 1976 as a waiter, and transferring ketchup like that was part of our duties.
My Dennys story has nothing to do with ketchup. After a night of bar hopping back in the 80's. We stopped at Dennys. I ordered a grand slam, it was missing the sausage. Ive got one stamped 1964 that's 99.9 % new. How about one from the year you may have been conceived?
Conceived in 1965 as well.😁
Hey John, you made a removable pour spout on that jar. If you cut the plastic above the rim of the jar, it will unscrew from that jar. Easy reload
Nice work on that entrenching tool. It looks great!

Jim- Those cupped brushes are super dangerous. You have to be on your A game anytime you use them. 😃👍
Philip- The early US made shovels were really strong and heavy. They made lots of import knockoffs sold at army navy stores that were awful. 😂👍
@@ScoutCrafter Yeah I have two originals that I won't let anyone touch. I do need an early Vietnam era one like you refinished.
My stepmother worked in a diner when i was a kid and i remember them emptying the ketchup bottles like that in 1970's.
John do you think it is possible due the placement of the rivets in the one shovel case it is keeping it from going down as it should? If you look at it the rivets are placed further in on that case than the other one those are spaced our further or they appear to be or that is how it looked on camera.
Yes- It feels like it’s hitting something on the older case. 😃👍
Neat trick with the shrinking of the bottle. I would have a concern with paint. How would you mix it (stir it) up?
In the tic tox video they drop a nut in as an agitator. 😃👍
Why do they keep messing with our food?! What is the point of clear ketchup? I remember the bottle stacking. Beautiful etool do over.
When I first saw that clear Ketchup online I thought it was a joke but maybe it’s not 😂 but I don’t want it 😆 anyway very nice job on that tool and thankfully you got it to fit in the other case 👍
Ken- I don’t want clear either but I really want to try it once! 🫣😂👍
Is that phosphoric acid prep and etch the same as phosphoric acid rust converter? They sure look similar.
Thanks!
The etch and prep chemically treats the metal against rust so even if the paint chips off the metal will be somewhat protected. It works well! 😃👍
John- I think I did see that one- it was like Twenty UA-cam Tool Restoration Channels. 😃👍
Yes, that must have been the one. Not sure why I can find it again.
You just filter the tomato Soup throught a cloth and you get clear tomato juice
You can dress for the cold temps. On the other hand when it’s hot there is a moral and legal limit as to how much clothes you can take off and you are still hot.
I was told almost all diners and restraunts use Heinz because its what people know and expect. My girlfriend and I went to a place to eat not that long ago and they had some weird off brand and it tasted like soap and ketchup mixed and was really bad. I would not eat it. I asked and they did not have Heinz so the food sucked. Great re-hab and the USN knife is so cool.
My favorite ketchup is Hunts however the best ketchup is Heinz in the small foil packets! That stuff is delicious! 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter Did you see my comment on the video with the Hess truck at x-mas I left 2 days ago??
i do remember the two ketchup bottles, one standing on the other bottle. I am still looking for that photo online. I do not think i would ever try the clear ketchup. I think that is too many chemicals and not tomatoes.
Love ketchup
I have one of those knives. What is the handle made of? Leather?
It was a phenolic type handle. Just lovely feel to it and very light too! 😃👍
I would remove the lid of the bottle to allow air to displace the water and then see if it leaks.
I use an angle grinder with wire wheels quite often. They demand respect!
Canvas made with natural fibers can shrink over time especially if it gets wet without the tool inside to hold the shape. I suspect that is why the old one won't work anymore.
It could be, although most military canvas items were pre shrunk and if anything usually got stretched out over time. 😃👍
A waitress I dated in the 70s used to call the task “marrying the ketchups”. Might help in the image search
Great episode! This is the first video of yours I have seen that placed advertisements in the middle. Does that happen automatically after so many views or subscribers?
I’m not monetized so I have no control over where and how many ads are placed. I can’t stand advertisements!
I’ve been growing clear tomatoes in my backyard for years. I never have eaten them because I can never find them!😂
Seriously, I will never use clear catsup, I’m loyal to Heinz ketchup.
Marc- Honestly It has little visual appeal and I can’t see it being popular but I just want to know if it’s real or some kind of internet hoax. 🫣😂👍
I asked ChatGPT to research, and this is what it said:
Heinz has never produced a clear ketchup product.
@ScoutCrafter Yep! When I moved out to Long Island, one of my favorite diners was Greek owned. On Hempstead turnpike in Farmingdale!
Patrick- I wouldn’t want clear ketchup either but I would like to try it once to see if it really tastes the same! 😂👍
Hey John, when you put something on your furnace, does it improve the quality of the paint adhesion or cure or does it just decrease the drying time?
Brian- I believe both- Definitely faster but I believe the warming of the item slowly helps the paint cure as it has a very dry warm environment. Sometimes I cover the item with a box or foil to really increase drying speed. Flat paints dry fast to begin with. 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter Thank you!
You really do need a compressor and a bead blasting cabinet.
I have both! The problem is blasting cabinets leave micro pits and here in my area everything blasted tends to rust. 😃👍
Didn't they make green ketchup a few years ago but it didn't sell good.
Yes. I never saw it on the shelves. 😃👍
Remember the Heinz green ketchup. It didn't sell well. 👍🇺🇸
