  • The cherry blossoms at the University of Washington are at full peak and I am taking myself on a field trip to finally see them! Along the way I’ll teach you the difference between cherry blossoms and flowering plum.
    Enjoy!

    I’ve lived in the PNW most of my life. I even lived not far from the Arboretum. I have visited the arboretum many times but never the UW campus during cherry blossom season. I’ll have to drive up there in the next week or so to visit. Thank you, for sharing your field trip with us! ❤️

    Loved the tour around the quad. When my husband was being treated at the UW Medical Center, we walked over to the quad to see the blossoms. They were stunning! A lot more people there, too. You hit it on a quiet day. Next time you go, if the fallen blossoms are dry, pick up a handful and throw them in the air. Have someone take your picture. Makes a good shot. We planted a Red Flowering Currant on our property because it's a PNW native and the hummingbirds like to feed on it. The hummers will follow the blooms up the coast. The first male Rufous arrived on March 16th this year. Some years they come on March 7th. Anna's are here all year long.

    • @HelloGarden
      @HelloGarden  6 місяців тому

      They do! The Yoshino will produce a tiny little fruit but it isn’t something humans will eat or enjoy. But the birds will love them! It’s definitely ornamental.

    Currants? I didn’t think currants were allowed in America because they have some incurable disease that affects white pine trees and currants. England has chosen the currants, we have chosen the pines. Is this correct?

    • @laurahiggins4712
      @laurahiggins4712 6 місяців тому +1

      We don't have any problems with disease on our Red Flowering Currant. We don't have a lot of pines here on the west or "wet side" of the mountains. Douglas Fir, Hemlocks, Western Red Cedars - are the native growing trees around here.

    • @HelloGarden
      @HelloGarden  5 місяців тому

      So interesting. Ribes sanguineum is a much loved native and I’ve never experienced them showing any sign of disease.
