  • Bill shows you how to install a Pertronix Ignitor Electronic Ignition on your 1965-1974 V8 Mustangs with Single Point Distributors.
    Purchase Product Here:
    www.cjponyparts.com/pertronix...
    Our Weekend Wrench project car is in need of a general tune-up, and we're going to be installing some new parts, including the Pertronix Ignitor 1. Delivering twice the voltage to the spark plugs, Ignitor electronic ignitions will increase horsepower, improve fuel economy, and extend spark plug life. The Ignitor system is designed for use with most point-type coils, but optimal performance is achieved when used with Pertronix's Flame-Thrower® 40,000 volt coil.
    Begin this tune-up with the Ignitor and Ignition Coil installation, and then follow Bill's step-by-step process to install and replace a variety of other engine parts and perform a tune-up that will have your 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 or 1974 V8 Mustang with Single Point Distributors running better than ever!
    Note: The distributor cap in this video now comes in a gray finish instead of black.

    I love how that fuel filter replacement was completely unrelated. A perfect example of one of those "Eh, may as well while I'm here" moments.

    One thing I noticed is you used the factory resistor wire for the points that drops voltage.
    Pertronix calls for a full 12 bolts from the ignition from what I’ve seen and heard

    Wanna make 3 notes real quick:
    - For people with added tachs - they have a lead attached to either negative or positive end of the coil, just reinstall the lead and leave it be. All it does it mark the collapse of the coil field, which happens with points or with pertronix, it's just the trigger type that's different but it will not affect it.
    - You do not need antiseize on steel plugs going into cast iron heads. They will not seize because they are the same metal. Antiseize only goes on the threads if you have dissimilar metals
    - If you forget or unplug all the wires on the dizzy, the firing order is stamped on the back of the factory manifold and you can go in that order. Passenger bank has cylinders 1-4 front to back, driver side is 5-8 and the firing order for OLD 260/289/302 is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. It has changed in later years (80s and 90s) and on 351 and the 302 HO to be 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

    Great video, Bill. Do you need to re set or adjust the timing when you install the Petronix and a new coil?

    • @Zerogivengarage
      @Zerogivengarage 9 років тому +1

      No you do not have to but you may find you can advance it a little more with the Pertronix.

    What did you do about the voltage resistance wire? Did you leave it as is or did you bypass it?

      When I did my ‘66, I just ran Anne’s wire from the ignition switch to the coil, and taped off the original resistance wire. (Just in case) worked well for me. Just my $0.02.
