They said the idea of this episode came simply from the friendship Armin & Rene had forged over the years from being stuck in make up for so long together
I like that in the end they acknowledge in an offhand way their respect for each other. Quark is Odo's white whale, the one man he can't bring to justice, and it drives him crazy. Mostly because Quark deals in really small and low keyed illegal activities. And I think Quark respects the fact that Odo, despite being a complete pain in Quark's ass, is a straight arrow/by the book dude. He wouldn't resort to underhanded trickery, such as trying to set Quark up in a sting operation or planting fake evidence, to get him arrested. They're stuck in a perpetual cycle of aggravation against each other that they sort of enjoy and hate.
I think it's several factors - for once Quark is really good at his illegal activities and that keeps Odo on his toes. Quark has grown on Odo and Odo has grown on Quark, they keep each other at peak performance and that sort of formed a weird bond of respect and friendship ( even though neither of them would admit it). It's also the type of crimes Quark committs - nothing violent or really harmful such as drugs, just some smuggling and sale of illegal items, so he is not hurting anybody physically or mentally, otherwise Odo would have come down on him hard as he and the Federation did when Quark started smuggling and selling weapons. I believe Odo could have taken Quark down anytime he really wanted but that bond of professional and personal respect let's him just monitor him and keep the worst of it contained and Quark knows not to cross that line.
Probably my second favorite arc aside from Garak: who is willing to betray his friends without a second thought to still willing to betray them, but at least he will now hesitate a bit.
@adrianmilespartosa, it really shows when he actually feels a slight sense of remorse after becoming a weapons dealer. What probably got him was that even Jadzia refused to acknowledge him and scorned him.
I've noticed it's a recurring theme in Star Trek that cadets who really have what it takes don't need to be told they're destined for great things. Their actions always speak for themselves (i.e. Kirk beating the Korashi Miru). The only time I can recall where somebody needed to be told their potential for greatness was Wesley Crusher, but that was because Picard was slamming him for telling a lie regarding a death he was (to a degree) responsible for and Picard was upset that Crusher was willing to betray Starfleet's ideals of excellence and Wesley's own innate potential just to hide from the consequences of his actions. And yeah, Quark would never tell Nog he was Captain material, partly due to Ferengi disdain for anything not involving profit, but also because he probably knows Nog needs to learn for himself that he has the potential. Quark learned a long time ago that living by other people's praises and expectations is a fool's errand and that the person you need to prove the most to is yourself. In his own weird way, he's helping Nog by not helping him (which is probably a Rule of Acquisition: "Sometimes the best option is doing nothing.")
I very much appreciate that Odo mentions what Quark would want to have done with his body in his "final" log entry. He respected him at least that much
Not just the idea of doing anything with one's dead, but doing so in a commercial manner, is an outside cultural idea to Odo. He has little use for money or ritual, but he still wants someone to do it because he knows it's what Quark would want. It's a very sweet moment from someone who is otherwise very inflexible.

You'll find his body further up the slope… No doubt he'd want you to vacuum-desiccate his remains and auction them off. Not that they're worth much. It does seem like subspace works like radio, just faster than light, so would still be disrupted by the same things that affect radio. Of course it's also analogous to the fact that most long distance communication methods (both radio and also visual) work better at altitude due to being line of sight.

Star Trek always has techno babble problems. Sometimes they are good for the plot sometimes they are bad. I think I’m this episode it’s a good excuse. Not only cause it creates a good narrative but it makes a level of sense since the transmitter was designed to work in space.
I always thought that was one of the charms of the episode. I'm sure in the script it was a desolate snowy wasteland full of blizzards and then for budget they have to shoot it in southern California and pretty much manage to make it work.
I never liked this episode because I couldn't get past the fact that they are so obviously not cold or in a place that's cold. It takes me out of the character drama which is otherwise not bad.

What do they use for oxygen tanks in the 24th century? I ask because Quark and Odo aren't hooked up to any oxygen in the last scene.
Its a star ship with life support in every room. Im just assuing they adjusted the oxygen mix in that room so tanks are unneceasary.
