- Louie & Enzo make a couple of British sandwich staples: The bacon butty and the sausage sarnie.
Thanks to MANY suggestions by viewers and others online!
We kept the bacon butty simple...British style bacon on buttered toast. The sausage sarnie we played with a little more, putting ketchup on half and HP brown sauce on the other.
Please let us know if we made these the way you'd make them or did we do it wrong?
Most people won't toast the bread. They add butter to the sausage sandwich and lay the bread (called "dip") in the bacon fat first once the bacon is cooked, for that sandwich. I would want something like an egg if I was going to toast the bread.

im from UK and i dont toast our bread i just use plain white brad buttered and then sliced sausage in the middle with a smearing of hp sauce or ketchup
also brown sauce is a good sauce to add to gravy to spice it up a little...
brown sauce has many uses i some times add pineapple chunks to it for BBQ food...

Better toasted
Try toasting one side (the outside) so you get a crunch and then lovely moist, soft texture. Mmmm

Either is great for bacon or sausage, a sausage/bacon sandwich or toast; although a sandwich is a little more fragile.
Don't add water to sausages. You're wanting to crisp up the skin, not boil them.
You nailed this guys. 99%. Bacon butties are meant to have HP sauce too. Don't bother cutting crusts. This is working peoples' food. If you can find seeded breads (like seeds in the bread), you can go next level.

My rule is always ketchup on bacon sandwiches and hp on sausage sandwiches, and to be fair we do use mayo a fair bit too but nowhere near bacon or sausage lol
Also you put the sauce onto the bread not the meat, so you can spread it or take some off if necessary

So when you add water you are poaching the food in water... you certainly are not frying it. When you fry and the temp of the oil is much higher, at the point that the water content in the food suddenly reaches boiling temp, it spits out under pressure. So..in short.
Adding water stops things frying.
Personally, I often boil sausages.
I put mine all in the oven.

Just come across this video. All in all, I think you did an excellent job. It was amusing to see you and your son's reactions. Most of us Brits don't toast the bread. Good thick slices of buttered white bread with heaps of bacon or sausage is all we need. As well as the sauce, that is.

Traditionally we had the middle cut bacon which is the belly and back still joined together. Today the streaky and back are usually sold separately.
I do miss through cut! Can't get it anywhere now. Used to be great rind on!
A few tips here;
The bread from the Uk has a lot less sugar in it so it actually tastes really quite different, that said I don’t know what that particular loaf tastes like of course. Whilst I was in the US though all of the bread tasted sweet compared to our ‘run of the mill’ (see what I did there?) loaves.
I know you were trying to make a video (a great one by the way!), but buttering the the bread the moment it comes out of the toaster so that it instantly melts into the toast, softens it and makes it even more buttery.
A lot of people in the UK like to argue two things:
Bread vs toast (I love toast)
And red vs brown sauce (I love brown).
I always put brown on both my sausage and bacon toast sandwiches, I love the tang.
Most important tip; always follow up either of those sandwiches with a cuppa English tea (Yorkshire If you can get it). The two go together like a dream.

James Morrall That sounds great! One that I used to make for myself was like this: fried egg (with a good sprinkling of salt & pepper plus chopped chives), bacon, Muenster cheese on a toasted everything bagel with a bit of butter & Parmesan cheese.
I haven’t made that in a LONG time but it’s really good!

ALWAYS BUTTER THE BREAD! FOR EVERYTHING! Unless you've got proper fresh baked/artisan etc, even then that will probably be dipped in olive oil and balsamic or with a creamy cheese such as brie.

Boil some potatoes. Mash them up but leave some decent chunks of potatoes. Separately dice and fry an onion. Add Corned beef and HP Sauce - Corned Beef Hash. Fed the nation through WW2 with the help from you chaps.👍

I live in Manchester, U.K. and growing up my high school did a breakfast club and I had some of my best sausage on toast, bacon on toast, sausage balms (rolls), bacon balms (rolls) I’ve ever had from those wonderful dinnerladies.
All very inexpensive too (this was 90s early 00s)
What a great way to get us in school and started for the day.
Your attempt definitely looked the part - just a pity you can’t get Oven Bottom Muffins over in the states as they are the best way to enjoy a “sausage sarnie” imo.

We dont toast the bread for a traditional sandwich. We call that a toasted sandwich or bacon on toast

We have bacon sandwiches and sausages in rolls on a regular basis here in the UK and I have never buttered the bread or rolls, it's a waste of butter, especially good quality butter such as Kerrygold. We grill both the bacon and the sausages . For the bacon, we pop the bread in the toaster just to get it a bit hardened up - about 45 seconds, put some brown sauce directly onto the unbuttered "toast", (both sides) and lay the bacon on top of it.
For the sausages, we warm the rolls up at the bottom of the grill whilst grilling the sausages, when done we put mustard on one side of the rolls and tomato ketchup on the other, lay the sausages inside and enjoy.
Again, so interesting how many different ways these sandwiches are enjoyed. Thanks a bunch for sharing your favorite way, and thanks for watching!

Oh and by way of advice with either bacon butties or sausage sarnies after you’ve buttered the bread/ toast smear which ever sauce you prefer on top of the butter before placing the bacon/ sausage into the sandwich, this avoids excess sauce either squirting in your eye or down your shirt, both of which is undesirable. Be lucky.

Buttering the bread also helps to stop the grease in the bacon from soaking into it.
which you wouldn't need to do if you hadn't already smeared butter fat all over it.
I normally slice the sausages while they're in the pan and cook them face down for a minute

Bacon butties and sausage sandwiches are made with bread, never toast. You overcooked the bacon. It was perfectly cooked when you first mentioned flattening it. Apart from those things, not bad.

As far as brown sauce goes, this is of course a personal preference but I'd say less is more. It's pretty strong & peppery so I tend to like just a hint of it.

Marc I always slice them then fry the open side to make sure cooked.
Fun fact that most Americans don't know is that A1 sauce actually came from the UK. It fell out of favour in the 70s with us.

A valiant effort chaps but your main mistake was in toasting the bread. Also, I always add salt, black pepper & white pepper to taste. The quality of the bread will make a difference, (a nice, fresh, crusty yet doughy sourdough loaf would work wonders). When I halve the sausage I personally put them back in the pan to sear the freshly exposed inside. Cooking the bacon for longer will crisp up the rind. And, of course, why not have the sausage AND bacon in one sandwich?
Seriously, try it with untoasted bread!
So we have learned since doing this, thank you! Definitely have had sausage & bacon together and of course it's more than the sum of its parts. Having just returned from the UK about a month ago, I can confidently say the sausages over there are much better than they are here. Or at least different enough to be more interesting, I suppose. We do have some excellent sausages here, but I loved the flavors I had on our trip.

With respect to the sausage sandwich, it's even nicer with fried onions with or without sauces, I also prefer to slice the sausage longways, so each one become two and fry or grill them both sides it adds some crispness ;-)

I often have a little laugh to myself when i see Americans doing English food but you guys pretty much nailed this, i would cook the sausages in the air fryer, never boiled them in water though they actuality looked fine, now you need to make a proper cup (or pot) of tea... but you'll need to find a store where youll be able to buy a kettle 😊

More you try it more you find how you like it .not usually toasted (bit drier but with crisp texture (bite) hot meat melts butter on bread and taste good providing you dont leave it too long as the under side gets soggy. And you will have your own preference to the sauce and amount that you like

I drove trucks in the UK for over twenty years. So a sausage sarnie and a cup of tea in a transport cafe (caff) also known as a 'greasy spoon' , would set you up for the day.
We do have greasy spoons here in the U.S. Sadly, they don't serve sausage sarnies.
HP SAUCE IS SOMETHING YOU GET USED TO AND PUT IT ON LOTS OF THINGS TO SPICE IT UP FROM BLAND, FRIED BREAD IS LOVELY TOO WITH BAKED BEANS TOMATOE , WE HAVE CURRY BEANS AND GARLIC BEANS ALL OF WHICH I WAS DOIN IN THE 80S WITH CHILLI POWDER AS WELL, IT REALY SPICED UP THE VEGI BURGERS 😊

Thanks for all the suggestions. You know what's funny is I have never tried Spam. Probably because it has the reputation of being "fake meat" here in the U.S. and such things weren't allowed in our house when I was growing up haha. I really should try it one of these days.

I never have sauce on my bacon sandwich, I have English mustard on my sausage sandwich. I always add butter to all sandwiches. We don’t tend to have toasted bread just ordinary bread . Toast goes with butter and jam or a full fried breakfast.

That's a good job! I make bacon butties using untoasted bread then lightly toast the whole sandwich under the grill, and using good sourdough bread makes it even more tasty, to keep back bacon flat all you need to do is snip the layer of fat with scissors in a few places, that stops it curling up, but I'm one of the minority of Brits who prefers streaky bacon. We would fry bangers in a little oil, the secret to a good banger is fry on a low heat and the fat which comes out of the actual sausages goes kinda sticky and adds loads of flavour, sauce is purely personal, most have a preference but some people like both, garlic mayo is also really good on a bacon butty, but most fellow Brits would revoke my British citizenship for saying that! 🤣

I've never cooked sausages in water. HP is great on bacon, egg, and bubble and sqeek. Try without toasting the bread so its soggy lol
You want to try a bacon butty with a fried egg in it with some fried mushrooms. Once tried never look back, great filling comfort food.

How cone Americans never eat things like chip, bacon or sausage sarnies, they are just so common here in the good old UK
I'm not sure why those haven't caught on here. Typically, sandwiches here have a lot more "stuff" on them...lettuce, pickles, sauces, etc. I think most Americans would look at you funny if you had a chip butty / sarnie as potatoes between bread is something that just isn't eaten here for whatever reason. I will admit that on the rare occasion when I get a burger from my local favorite fast food place (a Chicago chain called Portillo's) I do enjoy putting either fries or onion rings on the burger.
You can toast the bread, but half the joy of a sausage or bacon butty is the soft, fluffy white bread soaking up the melted butter and fat

A Bacon butty being made is better than an alarm clock in this house !! You need butter on bread and then bacon that is crispy ... ( limp bacon is disgusting } Then add what you what you want...egg. crisp fried mushroom. sauces what ever ...THEN sod the calories ...just enjoy !!

Level up the sausage by adding tomatoes. I like to add roasted sliced tomatoes to my toasted bacon sarnies and some whole plum tomatoes mashed up to my sausage sarnies. Also a chilli tomato chutney is awesome with sausage sarnies
Mmmm, the chilli tomato chutney sounds fantastic with the sausage...will definitely have to try that, although I'm not sure I'll be able to find such a chutney here in the U.S. I'll have to try to find some when I'm there next.

Not bad for a first effort. As an indication of how important these dishes are to UK culture, a popular radio host in the UK used to have a weekly quiz where he'd ask a celebrity guest a series of personal questions, with a choice of 3 possible answers. The final question was the same every week and had the options "red sauce, brown sauce or no sauce at all". This of course referred to how the celebrity preferred their sausage or bacon sarnie!!

The butter is a good type to use even in England, and HP sauce is my default; but you really poured it on. The red sauce was Heinz, but I've heard the Americans like everything ultra sugary so maybe a bit too sweet for me. I've never seen anyone use water instead of a bit of oil, but it looked like they turned out okay. A good go and I'd have been happy with them, but even happier if you had put a fried egg with a runny yolk onto them as well.
Yes, next time oil in the pan for sure, no toasting, and buttered bread. I'm not a huge ketchup fan myself. I don't hate it, but I typically only use it with french fries (chips) if at all. I do love a runny yolk fried egg on a sandwich for sure!
Maybe also try a bacon and fried egg sandwich. The yolk should be soft as when it oozes over the bacon is heavenly

A bacon butty white bread but not toasted tomato sauce and a sausage sarnie always brown sauce but put on the bread first smooth with a knife . You have to try a pork pie with brown sauce too . And try toad in the hole lol that's a big Yorkshire pudding with sausages in and when cooked loads of gravy.

It's the tamarind in HP sauce that gives it the kick.
We do use mayonnaise...... nearly every pre-made sandwich we can buy in the shops has mayo in them.......also brown sauce is typically used for the bacon not the sausage but it just depends on preference
So interesting how I've heard such different things from different people about mayo!

On my break, i usually go to the local sandwich van, and get myself a bacon, ( i ask for the bacon to be trimmed, because i dont like fatty bacon) egg & mushroom sandwich, with a little fried onion, and of course brown sauce, its always served in a bread cake, or a bapp, not sliced bread, and it's pure heaven in a bun ❤
A bapp,a bread cake or bun ,in this context are all bread products, and our bacon, over here in Britain is so much better than what you get in the States, your bacon is what we would call streaky bacon 🥓 Yuk !

Wow... that’s a lot of sauce..lol. Bacon butty...we normally have them on a roll/bap. With brown sauce....hmmmm. Very spicy...vinegary. Love both brown and hip tomato sauce. HP do a fruit sauce too. (Not to be confused with actual proper fruit) I think that’s just the name. I’ve had it but can’t remember what it tastes like.

The bacon is overcooked, also spicy food for breakfast is not a particularly British thing, apart from Devilled Kidneys. Traditional breakfast foods would include Kippers (smoked herring), bacon and eggs, sausage and egg, the Full English / Scottish/ Welsh / Ulster Fry, porridge (very Scottish, unsweetened with salt), toast and baked beans. British Sausages tend not to be spicy, although Cumberland sausages have a mix of herbs and spices and

usually you don't heat the pan before starting the bacon. Both the bacon and pan are cold. Maybe you need oil now because the bacon these days doesn't have as much fat! In the "olden" days people always put butter on the plain bread to keep the fillings from making the bread soggy.
I always pre-heat the pan and love the way the bacon comes out :) This was British-style bacon which has less fat than American-style bacon, but still plenty enough to not have to use oil (IMO). American-style bacon still has loads of fat so no worries there for sure!
Maybe for the next british bites you could do a breakfast fry up/full english? or maybe you could try a roast dinner with a yorkshire pudding (must be covered in gravy though)

You should next try a BLT. A bacon, lettuce and tomato sarnie. How abouta fruedegg sarnie as well with Tommy sauce.
BLTs are pretty common "diner food" here in the US, too. What's Tommy sauce?
We would usually put some sauce on the bacon butty as well, I have tomato ketchup on bacon butty and HP on a sausage sarnie but it's down to personal taste, some do it the other way round, some, like my weird uncle, have no sauce or butter, just weird. And, like others have commented, we don't toast the bread but yours did look good though 😁👍

Good job. Although i wouldn't of toasted the bread. Both sauces are great but tomato goes better with sausage and brown goes better with bacon.
