The 49ers had excellent teams in the 1990's. In 92-93, and 96-97 they had great teams but had the misfortune of the Cowboys and Packers just being better those years. Otherwise they might have 2-3 more super bowls.
Totally agree. 49ers of the 90s were every bit as good as those great teams of the 80s. Like you said they had the misfortune of playing great Cowboy and Packer teams of that era.
Heath Shuler is on the Mount Rushmore of Monster, Monster QB busts. I go Shuler, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, and of course, J’Marcus Russell. Guys on their periphery are many. Andre Ware. Cade McNown for my Bears, David Klinger, another University of Houston entry, Rick Mirer (although I believe his first 2 seasons weren’t half bad. My Bears traded 13 overall in ‘97 for him 😩) Joey Harrington. David Carr (although his circumstances were brutal), Tim Couch, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Tebow (although he was way overdrafted), Blake Goebbert, Jake Locker, and Cristian Ponder from the same great class). We can go on and on. Great upload!
Shuler had the least support around him. I remember when he had a run game in 95 with Washington he played well when they beat Dallas in Dallas and when the saints ran well against detroit shuler played very good.
For personal reasons I never saw this game, right when it aired. All I remember was Rod Woodson's massive performance via in the highlights. One of the best games the 49ers played all year, & that's stating something for what was the 1997 season. Nevertheless recalling 1990's FOX's presentation of NFL Football will always have a nostalgic piece in my heart.
That 49ers offensive line just got progressively worse as the 90's went on and guys got old and injured. After '96, Steve could barely set up to throw before having to run for his life. I even remember Garrison Hearst saying he hated running sweeps because they would always get blown up for losses.
A few weeks after this game, Ditka made his return to Soldier Field on a Sunday night. The battle of the busts me Shuler and Mirer was one of the worst quarterbacked games I’ve ever seen. Just brutal. Mirer was so bad, he was pulled a mere 5 games into his Bear career. Although Wannstedt was a good defensive mind, his ability to scout and draft talent was awful. After his second season in which the Bears had a surprising playoff victory at Minnesota on New Years Day, and believing his special teams needed more, a team with an abundance of holes drafted punter Todd Sauerbrun in the second round. Oy vey.
Summerall and Madden are so comforting. Peak nostalgia.
Summerall was in decline by this point but he was still better than anyone today.
One day, people are gonna say the same about Buck and Aikman.

Yeah, Mirer and Carr were a notch above the rest. Watch out for Trey Lance and especially Zack Wilson now.
Shuler was good at Tenn though. I know that’s college but still..
Shuler at least tried. The other three on your Mt. Rushmore deserve to be there because they never bothered to even try.
@@jmill3147 Good point. He did care

Rod Woodson 3 interception game! I remember watching this as a kid !! Niners had a good team just couldn't get past Green Bay.
They got past Green Bay only to get beat by Atlanta.
@@jpowers55 That was 1998.
Yup He played incredible that game. Huge big hits and a fumble recovery I believe too. About to watch this game now and bring back some memories.

Rod woods on had some of the best coverage ever but his slot coverage ability was insane
Mike Ditka was 4-10 vs the 49ers, with 5 shutouts, Ditka had to have nightmares seeing the gold helmets and red jerseys
Don't forget about the white jerseys. They shut him out twice in the super dome
88’ NFC Championship Game one of my favorite memories as a kid. Made my little brother turn from a Bear fan to a Cowboy
Only picks Woodson had all yr!! I remember!!

This play pretty much sums up Terrell Owens career! 48:49
4 HOFers on that Niner defense alone. Chris Doleman, Bryant Young, Rod Woodson, and Kevin Greene.
That fumble was the end of TE Tony Johnson's career.
8 turnovers by new orleans. Ouch
LETS GET IT DONE....MARDI GRAS STYLE......POST NOLA 2005 NOW BABY!

Todd was a MONSTER punter at West Virginia. He was gonna be drafted high for punter/kicker anyways. He had a decent NFL career too.
@@zacchaeuswilson6116 He was a monster. I remember well. But come on, a team with that many holes should’ve been drafting at different positions.
Young so overrated it's hilarious
Best left handed Qb in NFL history bud
Steve actually played with a concussion. That’s impressive.
