petula gives a powerful and emotional performance of As If We Never Said Goodbye from sunset boulevard. She is easily the best Norma (Hence the eye make-up)
If Petula Clark comes to your concert venue...I urge you to see her. Ms. Clark interprets a lyric with ALL her heart and might. ALL of her songs are timeless and three or four encores later...you'll agree! Thanks for posting!
Excellent performance by Petula Clark! The very pretty and extremely talented singer, actress, dancer, entertainer, pianist, and songwriter Petula Clark was a child and teenage star in England! Then her song Downtown hit number 1 here in the United States! She received the Grammy Award and her career soared with more hit songs, guest spots on many television shows, radio, her own television show, more big screen movies and many stage productions of Classic Musicals! I was born in 1978 here in the United States. I have always been and always will be a fan of Petula Clark! It should be Dame Petula Clark! Thank you for posting and sharing this classic performance!
There ain't never been a canary who has taken on this song that hasn't communicated prfound hope for the come back. I love 'em all. Pet has all that any of us could ever possibly deserve. God and musical theater bless her.
Miss Petula Clark adds a new depth and dimension to this great show. I wish I could see and hear her performance in person. What a great singer and actress. I love her.
Stunning performance by Petula is a reminder this incredible talent thankfully goes on and on & luckily got to see her in Los Angeles Pantages Theatre production of "Sunset Blvd" and the lady was brilliant...touching clip show a timeless Petula soaring, giving a profoundly moving performance in top form...Bravo Petula!
Oh my....I am amazed how she can take me through such a range of emotion so completely. She sings beautifully...wonderful pitch....senstive to the nuance of the orchestration...superb!
you seriously need to see petula live to really appreciate her, she wipes the floor with all the other Normas i have seen. it's not just about the singing, petula acts far better than the others and has age on her side. she is norma
I've always been so greatful for people who've made enduring contributions to our lives as human beings. Petula is one such person. She's a legend in my book. Thank you so much for posting
I saw Petula Clark as Norma Demond in the NJPAC production of "Sunset Boulevard" in Newark, NJ several years ago. Singers such as Patti LuPone, Elaine Page, and Betty Buckley can belt this song to the rafters; singers such as Petula Clark, Glenn Close, and others - who sing well, but don't have the same soaring octave range or decibel volume - bring the character to life through their stage mannerisms, pauses, hand movement, inflections - and voice. I think this was a wonderful interpretation!
I had often thot that music enhanced the drama, but Dame Judi & Pet Clark have shown how it is likewise possible the other way round in their ingenius use of speak-sing as an art. Pls make Pet Clark a dame all you British citizens. She is someone a people/nation can be very proud of!
I'll always love this lady! She looks just like a gal I ran around with as a young guy.Her Name was Carol Miller and she wound up being murdered by her scumbag live in BF!But,they could have been twins!Fantastic performance,Pet!!
Wow.. what poison on here about Dear Pet... I was expecting to see Petula Clark when I was in London in 1996. I had seen Glenn Close and Betty Buckley and was excited to see Ms. Clark.. The tour guide on the boat to Greenwich announced as we sailed past her flat, that she was on Holiday!!! I was gutted.. But got to see Rita Moreno, instead. Im so glad you posted this video though, cause I wanted to see/hear Pet do it. Rita was FABULOUS. A great mix of girlish timidity and resentful star!!!
Each Norma found a way to make the role work for them. When Petula ran her fingers through Joe's hair and said "Now come to bed, Darling", she was the only one to create the same wince amongst the audience that Swanson did in 1950. In an age of the 50 year old "Goldie Hawn" generation of beauties, we have lost that...
i saw Glenn Close, Petula Clark, Betty Buckley, and Elaine Paige in the role of "Norma" and though Glenn was superb, Petula was amazing, she touched me, i actually had a huge lump in my throat in this scene. none of the other 3 did that to me! petula was and IS the best Norma closely followed by Glenn. x
Yes, she is--and has been under appreciated, forever attached to Downtown--her signature song. It's a marvel when younger people discover her wonderfully rich talent...and know that she is far more than a blip from the 60s--a true artist, and, to quote you, 'a vocal genius.'
Thomas Outt: THANK YOU so very, very,VERY much indeed for what you have said about Petula in your Wonderful comment. You have said it perfectly and put your excellent points over perfectly. I appreciate very much that you (like me) appreciate just how talented Petula is. She is absolutely unique in her AMAZING career. Child Star to the stand out female singer of the Sixties and Seventies to a great and very endearing film actress and musicial star, and in my humble and totally honest opinion she is The Greatest Female Vocalist Of ALL TIME. Thank you again Thomas.
I saw her perform this and she was fabulous. She was nearly 70 at the time. I doubt many could put on a performance this good at that age. She was much better than Glen Close! Plus she was constantly going up and down that huge staircase in those heavy sequined costumes... probably has thighs of steel from that tour.
Funny no. 2 - Found my son watching '102 Dalmations'. Glenn Close plays Cruella De Vil (to his delight)! Saw Dame Judi's 'Send in the Clowns' - very moving speak-singing style! Thanks for the reference. And thank you for this clip.
Someone said the band looked scared - actually one of the guitarists over her shoulder looks close to tears at the end . Probably because he is so moved. The nice thing about Petula is she never cheats in this - she takes the character and the music head on - there may be the odd rough patch in her singing ( Glenn Close who i adore in the role also had rough singing moments) , but even that seems to be part of the characterization. She goes beyond the notes and words to become Norma Desmond.
Funny, I just posted a comment elsewhere that I find Glenn Close a bit intimidating as Norma. Here's someone who thinks she has created a Norma monster! When it comes to putting it all together sensibly way, Petula is the queen of artistry!
I really felt we got to know Norma in this performance..and I feel this is very important as rather than being a rather impersonal bel canto show piece this is in fact the first time the audience meet Norma. Please dont misunderstand me I do admire Close's work..but I feel undue criticism has been leveled at ms Clarke.
Petula made her Norma work because when she ran her fingers through Joe Gillis hair and said "and now it's time for bed" or when asked how old Salome was, she replied "16", you knew you were dealing with someone who was dangerously insane.
she gives an excellent performance... Her appearance is a little bit Grizabella meets Victoriana meets Norma Desmond... visually and emotionally shocking
I found the way ms Clarke sung spoke the role to be infinately more satisfying and indeed realisic than Close's wildly fluctuating tone quality and poorly disguised passing from chest to head voice. ms Clarke knew she couldnt do a big sing and so as a total professional took a different approach and succeeded marvelously..
Agreed the diction was sometimes awkward and some notes were a little 'tight'. BUT this was unmistakably a work of REAL artistry...I cannot agree that Close was in any way superior to this performance.
Not a patch on Elaine Paige.....who was the best Norma vocally by far. BTW - what the hell has she got on.......one of Edith Piaf's cast offs???? as for that make up............
yes, emlodik is houseonsunset, isnt it so sad that he has to skulk around youtube hunting "petula clark" so he can give her a bashing, maybe we should all get together find all the linda balgford vids and slag her off, does he think by slagging off all the time that he will turn the world to his way of thinking?? god this kid needs to grow up!!!!
I give Ms Clark an A for effort for her Norma; my late partner and l saw LuPone the opening week, Buckley a year later with Barrowman, and in January of 95, most daring, risk-taking, beautifully acted and sung Norma, Elaine Paige. Later on, seeing Close and finally Clark, l enjoyed both, but Clark is no actress.
A powerful performance, yet, a bit scary.......... no offence, i understand, Normal is supposed to be dramatic, just look at the band behind her, they got a bit scared by her too. LOL.
do you know what, deadmanphantom, i am going to block the little shite (whom i suspect is also "Emlodik". i believed everyone is entitled to their opinion so allowed the freak to rant, but enough is enough... goodbye houseonsunset!
Absolute GARBAGE!!!!!!! That Andrew Lloyd Webber allowed her to play this role is more proof he's lost his mind. Forget Love Never Dies, this is proof enough. I'm all for different takes on a character, but this is just terrible.
If Petula Clark comes to your concert venue...I urge you to see her. Ms. Clark interprets a lyric with ALL her heart and might. ALL of her songs are timeless and three or four encores later...you'll agree!

i have neva seen Sunset Boulevard at the theatre although someday i hope i will but I love Petula singing this. To me this is the best..
This performance moved me to tears....Petula Clark is BEYOND AWESOME ! !
She IS AWESOME and also she is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
There ain't never been a canary who has taken on this song that hasn't communicated prfound hope for the come back. I love 'em all. Pet has all that any of us could ever possibly deserve. God and musical theater bless her.
Just enjoy the moment...It never can be changed, it is done. Savor the moment and the time, the love the joy that the Great Petula had given us...
I always loved Petula Clark. She is one of the best!
She sang this beautiful song with so much feeling and sounded awesome!
Miss Petula Clark adds a new depth and dimension to this great show. I wish I could see and hear her performance in person. What a great singer and actress. I love her.
Dame Petula Clark!!!
Wow! The amazing Petula Clark. I have loved her since I was a child. This performance is incredible!
I saw every Norma that did the role (14 times ) , including Glen in New York, but Pet is still by far the very best Norma to date
always liked Petula. She is my 2nd favorite Norma. 1st is Betty
💯 per cent agree with you Paul Winsland.
Stunning performance by Petula is a reminder this incredible talent thankfully goes on and on & luckily got to see her in Los Angeles Pantages Theatre production of "Sunset Blvd" and the lady was brilliant...touching clip show a timeless Petula soaring, giving a profoundly moving performance in top form...Bravo Petula!
she is a real beauty , i've seen her live shows and she can deliver anything.
Petula was wonderful as norma!
I love Petula and her voice!
With a variety of instruments, her voice it the dominant feature, and all you need to hear.
Absolutely fantastic.
I really like this clip.
Pet is wonderful
Oh my....I am amazed how she can take me through such a range of emotion so completely. She sings beautifully...wonderful pitch....senstive to the nuance of the orchestration...superb!
Petula Clark THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
Enough said.
you seriously need to see petula live to really appreciate her, she wipes the floor with all the other Normas i have seen. it's not just about the singing, petula acts far better than the others and has age on her side. she is norma
Petula's still got it. Way to go. You soar in this interpretation.
I've always been so greatful for people who've made enduring contributions to our lives as human beings. Petula is one such person. She's a legend in my book. Thank you so much for posting
I TOTALLY and UTTERLY agree with you 💯 per cent Life Cure-Rated.
i watched petula during her matinee performance as norma desmond in 2000. she was magnificent. truly magnificent.
I saw Petula Clark as Norma Demond in the NJPAC production of "Sunset Boulevard" in Newark, NJ several years ago. I saw her do this in the USA national tour. She got several curtan calls and was absolutly briliant in the role. Love this woman.
Bring back Sunset Boulevard, and long live Pet Clark! There will only be one true Norma Desmond and that is Petula. AMAZING!!!
I grew up listening to this goddess as many of us did..what a voice!
even though this is a concert petula clark acts every bit of this song. we see norma's vulnerability and passion and hope it's a great performance.
just superb! Bravo, Miss Clark!!
absolutely magical
thank you petula
she is quite simply a vocal genius
Which is why RC Plans Petula Clark is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
I had often thot that music enhanced the drama, but Dame Judi & Pet Clark have shown how it is likewise possible the other way round in their ingenius use of speak-sing as an art. Pls make Pet Clark a dame all you British citizens. She is someone a people/nation can be very proud of!

@@darrenplumpton9737 She has lived a life that is a legacy & never let her creative energy remain static.
Great Interpretation…. 👏 Bravo’ Glenda
i dunno how i got here. i'm scared. and really happy. how beautiful.
I saw her perform this and she was fabulous. She was nearly 70 at the time. I doubt many could put on a performance this good at that age. She was much better than Glen Close! For me this is the only version. Love it

love this and Pet x x
this i the Best one for me. BIGGER. Love Her.x x
Perfect. Better than anyone has played this song erverywhere.
God bless...
Don Black aid to her on her third THIS IS YOUR LIFE 'you LIVE your songs' .. she does
Those who find her no good here I think are missing the point that she brings a sad vulnerability to the song and role.
It's very cleverly done .

@Deadmanphantom you are so lucky you got to see every norma :-)

she gives an excellent performance... Her appearance is a little bit Grizabella meets Victoriana meets Norma Desmond... visually and emotionally shocking
She was much better in late 2007 in Palm Springs
I wish I hadn't come across this!! Oh dear God no!!!
show me somebody who can do this ,with the same passion and tallent in 2013...hmm... i bet you know the answer.. none...
I found the way ms Clarke sung spoke the role to be infinately more satisfying and indeed realisic than Close's wildly fluctuating tone quality and poorly disguised passing from chest to head voice. ms Clarke knew she couldnt do a big sing and so as a total professional took a different approach and succeeded marvelously..

dame shirley BASSEY DID THIS VERSION AND IT SOUNDS SO MUCH GOOD.
A powerful performance, yet, a bit scary.......... no offence, i understand, Normal is supposed to be dramatic, just look at the band behind her, they got a bit scared by her too. LOL.
Great but IMHO Faith Brown was the nest Ms Desmond.
Meh.. I dont' think Kitsch is the right word for her o_O...

SO-so, I prefer Glenn Close 's version, which is much more better, technically and emotionally.
