ABOUT The Musical, Sunset Boulevard:
Sunset Boulevard is a musical with book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Based on the 1950 film of the same title, the plot revolves around Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street. When young screenwriter Joe Gillis accidentally crosses her path, she sees in him an opportunity to make her comeback to the big screen. Romance and tragedy follow.
LYRICS: With One Look:
With on look
I can break your heart
With one look
I play every part
I can make your sad heart sing
With one look you'll know
All you need to know.
With one smile
I'm the girl next door
Or the love that you've hungered for
When I speak it's with my soul
I can play any role
No words can tell
The stories my eyes tell
Watch me when I frown
You can't write that down
You know I'm right
It's there in black and white
When I look your way
You'll hear what I say.
Yes, with one look
I put words to shame
Just one look
Sets the screen aflame
Silent music starts to play
One tear from my eye
Makes the whole world cry.
With one look
They'll forgive the past
They'll rejoice: I've returned at last
To my people in the dark
Still out there in the dark...
Silent music starts to play
With one look you'll know
All you need to know.
With one look
I'll ignite a blaze
I'll return to my glory days
They'll say Shirley's back at last.
This time I'm staying
I'm staying for good
I'll be back
Where I was born to be
With one look
I'll be me...
LYRICS - As If We Never Said Goodbye:
I don't know why I'm frightened
I know my way around here
The cardboard trees, the painted seas, the sound here...
Yes, a world to rediscover
But I 'm not in any hurry
And I need a moment
The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways
The atmosphere as thrilling here as always
Feel the early morning madness
Feel the magic in the making
Yes, everything's as if we never said goodbye
I don't want to be alone
That's all in the past
This world's waited long enough
I've come home at last!
And this time will be bigger
And brighter than we knew it
So watch me fly, we all know I can do it...
Could I stop my hand from shaking?
Has there ever been a moment
With so much to live for?
I'm coming out of make-up
The lights already burning
Not long until the cameras will start turning...
We'll have early morning madness
We'll have magic in the making
Yes, everything's as if we never said goodbye
Yes, everything's as if we never said.....
Goodbye!
To the "critics": Shirley Bassey never has to explain any song she sings or how or why she sings it. She's a living legend. You may have other style preferences, but when was the last time anyone paid to see, hear or televise anything you did? Glenn Close was amazing and owned this song for sure. Betty Buckley was also amazing. It doesn't detract from their performances to admire the singular talent of Dame Shirley Bassey when she sings these songs, or any song for that matter.
Simply unreal. Every note- flawless. Every gesture- immediate and committed. Every nuance- personal and intimate and yet able to be read from the back row. This is how you perform. It doesn't matter where the original material came from- she is making it about HER, and it's simply unreal. Thanks for sharing!
God she's brilliant! What a gift she has. Talk about goosebumps. Hello???? Any so many fantastic songs she has recorded. Talk about a discography. Wow!!!!! Your a gift to many Miss Dame Shirley Bassey.
The second song I played over and over, had my arm up in the air just as she did , my god she is so wonderful.
She should have played Norma Desmond. The show should have run for longer.
the best version of "As If We Never Said Goodbye", no doubt!
Fabulous. I can't stop playing.
Powerful. Effortless controlled phrasing. Uncomprable!
Shirley Bassey is good singing anythying, no matter if she´s not an actress.
With one look performed live! Priceless!
I have seen Dame Shirley 4 times in Concert she always delivers. I love her style and voice, she doesn't play around with the song. She Always steers my emotions. Thank you Dame Shirley. Many thanks for the video.
And don't forget - she was born in 1937! Amazing!
Incomparably the best, Dame Shirley. I love you to pieces.
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G
The Great Dame Shirley Bassey
Always a fantastic song
Glad you can appreciated both of them in their own special way!
Thanks Shirley bassey your my star
I'm in love with Shirley. She's absolutely fantastic in every thing she does.
Never compare artists! Dame Shirley is Dame Shirley, admired and loved by us All
Extraordinary instrument. No one can do what Bassey did. Streisand, Paige, Minelli. None of them.
best voice from Britain
Holy Moly, WHAT A VOICE!!!!
Come on. Is there anything Shirley can not sing? Her voice, her diction. Perfect.
David Austin she's absolutely brilliant she could sing the telephone directory.
...and even if the music and lyrics don't initially flow (for her) ...she'll WORK...and WORK on it..until...perfection.
shirley has it all fantastic voice and looks better than ever she is still the best
Incredible (especially Never Said Goodbye).
Shirley trumps them all
60 - Like seriously. RESPECT!!!! 5 Years after I played support to her at Dublins 3 Arena:)
Stunning! She needs to make the movie of SB..
I just heard she's back in the studio, YES!!!
Shirley would make a great Norma Desmond :)
Who can ever outperform Shirley Bassey but only Shirley Bassey. Amazing Shirley Bassey. Brilliant.
Such power and style a voice of an angel. And you tube has done her proud. GREAT!
So good to listen in to this special Diva. Perfect.
Love her voice, nobody sounds like Shirley Bassey! My favorite recording of hers is "Moonraker" from the Bond film of the same name. I've read that she was a last minute replacement on the song when Johnny Mathis backed out and she does not consider the song "hers", but she could have fooled me! I even bought the soundtrack I liked it so much and played it over and over. And she was a hit a last night's Oscar's performing "Gold Finger"!!!
Love Dame Shirley Bassey. Always have , always will. ❤️ Thank you so much for posting this. I am amazed it took so long to get into my UA-cam feed!
Just outstanding! Thank you for posting this. I've noticed comparisons and opinions which everyone is entitled to and I just want to say that I'd prefer to hear Shirley sing these songs, but if I had to choose a favorite theatrical stage performance, my choice would be Betty Buckley.. hands down!
Our very own my Idle the most wonderful Dame Shirley Bassey seen. Her in. Concert many many times. Juuuuuuust amazing 😉 miss you Shirley very much sweetheart love and hugs Dee 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Beautiful woman. Beautiful voice!
Bravo Shirley.
Thankyou Shirley 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🎶❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
OUTSTANDING. PERFORMANCE. THERE ARE KNOW WORDS. THAT CAN EXPLAIN. THE DAME CLASS AND TALENT. CLASS BY HERSELF. 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺JOANN LAMONICA ONEONTA NY
Awesome singer. The best for me. Thank you.
Betty Buckley is one of the greatest singers/enterainers to sing in a musical, any musical..In my opinion. I didn't know she was such a great singer when growing up watching her in the 1980's sitcom, Eight Is Enough.
Brilliant
שירלי ביסי פשוט גדולה מהחיים
Pure magic from Dame Shirley.
Not only does Shirley Bassey have a fantastic voice she acts out the character of every song she sings which is not an easy thing to do
YOU GO GIRL💃💃💃💃💃💃💃. STUNNING AS ALWAYS AND THE SONG IS PURE CLASS AS IS DSB HERSELF. 👑👑👑. JOANN. LAMONICA. NEW. YORK✈️🛩🌹
@Paulo Nogueiro. Right on, I'll also say that she is an actress. Even if she hasn't performed in films or on the stage she displays acting and star talent in all that she does. She's electrifying, and carries herself with a duchess's stage presence so that your eye goes straight to her, there could be ten other singers on the stage, she has the magnetism to dominate the camera. She glows with sincerity when she sings and her expressions subtly change, she knows how to turn a phrase, giving it an added meaning and truth that may not have been there on a sheet of paper. And she is completely comfortable, cool as a cucumber and natural in front of an audience, always alive and at home, never forced. And when she teases and talks to her audience you also know that she has comedic timing. Having a stunning voice that glitters like champagne then booms the climax like a stick of dynamite doesn't hurt either. :) She would have been good in many roles I think Norma Desmond, Velma Kelly, Fantine, Mama Rose, Lucy.
+bendabledoll Watch the video of her performing "Excuse Me" in front of a live audience, here on UA-cam. She's an ACTRESS who SINGS!
HOW GREAT!!!!!!!!!
thanks for spreading beautiful energy into this world and a smile on my face and many others xxxx
😀 AMAZING .. .. .. 👏👏👏
🕊🕊
PERFECTION! The GREATEST EVER and so BEAUTIFUL to this DAY!!! What a DAME!!!! I love you Shirley!!!! OH....did I mention the greatest SMILE I've ever seen? I STATE THE OBVIOUS!
fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only Shirley could make me enjoy ALW.
Bassey has few peers. Truly a great singer.
Event by the Freemasons .
Decore by the Freemasons. Song by the Freemasons. Singer working for rhe Masons.... buit what a wonderful singer she is.
becanto: What a great comment, and I'm sure that Dame Shirley, if she even logs on to UA-cam, would appreciate comments such as yours. This is the usual reaction people have when they first discover this lady, well, if they don't have previous bias to other contemporary artists that is. Bassey is an easy listening artists, but she has the VOICE to sing just about any genre of music there is (well, except maybe Rrapp). I discovered her when in high school...and haven't looked back!
The best!
Que bella mujer!!!
Não são os diamantes que são eterno e sim vc.obrigado
She's gorgeous and has an incredibly powerful voice, but she never gives me goosebumps like Streisand does.
And, that's what makes the world go around. For me, just reverse your comment as Shirley is the one that gives me goosebumps. I am from the USA and grew up listening to Streisand, but once I heard Bassey sing, and especially LIVE, she became my favorite.
Don't get me wrong, I love Bassey too, but I think Streisand is the better actress. In any event, everything is subjective--and they're both extraordinarily talented women.
here I was trying not to tear up over this performance, like Scot said, "makes the world go 'round"!
@@singasong718 Shirley isn't playing a character here, she's just being herself singing these songs. Notice she says Shirley instead of Norma.
I agree I grew up listening to many vocalist and still do but for me DSB gives me goosebumps and strikes the heart and soul for me. Thank You for this posting 💕😘 DSB ♾️
@sas9023055 - It's nice that you recognized the differences as you must be a big Sunset Boulevard fan. But, since 99.9% of the world's population never saw this musical, they wouldn't have known these differences unless someone pointed it out..thks!
Betty Buckley owns these songs, but Miss Bassey is my second favorite singing both of these songs.
Thank you God for DSB. Brilliant performance video DSB ♾️💎💎 World Legend Greatest,🌟🌟🌟🎶🐈🕊️⚖️🤗💯💎
Every great lady has a right to sing this.
THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS AVAILABLE TO US I AM SO SO SO GRATEFUL X
oh my god, 5:36...just incredible
Words, words, words, just close your eyes, enjoy... This is for the senses, not the mind....
Graças a Deus à Vida e a Shirley Bassey!!!!!!!! A minha Deusa!!!!!!
@DistantCousin - You are absolutely right. My only argument from the original comment made was that Shirley didn't screw up the lyrics, and thus she has nothing to be forgiven for. The lyrics as she sings them are exactly as her musical director arranged for her, and they are the same lyrics as she recorded her versions of both these songs. I enjoy all the lyrics from the musical, but to include these tracks on her POP LP, some of the lyrics had to be cut and they don't apply to the musical.
Magnificent.

Now that;s how to sing!
ela poderia ser a irmã de todos e dar "uma canjinha" em todos os nossos aniversários. Simples assim!!! Modestamente!!!
Wow!
Am I the only one who thinks of a classy, female Freddie Mercury when I listen to Bassey?
WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!!!
WOW,,!
She can sing …
I have uploaded the entire concert: For each number type in Shirley Bassey - Song title as shown below, then look for sas9023055. The songs she performs are: I Am What I Am : As I Love You : Johnny One Note : History Repeating : Yesterday When I Was Young : Razzle Dazzle : All That Jazz : I Want To Know What Love Is : You'll See : With One Look / As If We Never Said Goodbye : Goldfinger. Enjoy!
@KuroInuSama69 - I'm glad Shirley is worthy of forgiveness, but she not screw up the lyrics to this song. She intentionally didn't sing all the lyrics as originally written for the musical, Sunset Boulevard. Shirley is a POP singer, and both the arrangements and the words to most of the songs from musicals that Shirley has recorded are slightly modified. If not, they wouldn't have that POP flavor, OR the 'Bassey' Stamp which makes her so unique. Once peole understand...everything's good.
Fab version. But you cant compare her to the actress who have performed this song as the character. Shirley was singing it as Shirley. Hey just my opinion x
+Hefin Rosser of corse she sang as Shirley. This proly was not a theatre act.
Please upload this entire concert; Viva Diva Shirley Bassey TV Special. PLEASE?????????
Sunset Blvd was one of the theatre's greatest turkeys...it just did not work on any level....but Bassey does a reasonable job the songs suit her over the top style...
Why didn't she ever play Norma Desmond on stage. She's perfect for the role.
Shirley was offered the part, but performing the same songs in a musical, and singing them the same way, did not suit her personality. When she performs in concert she sings the song a little differently every time. . And, she directs the director when on stage rather than the other way around.
@sas9023055 Though I would argue that even if 99.9% of the population possibly hadn't seen SB, the songs themselves had become much better known in their own right, and therefore people would be more likely to spot difference to the standard lyrics.
:)
KurolnuSama69 - And yet, over the last 15 years and with half a dozen live clips she has sung this song the same way, including her studio recording. You certainly have a right to your opinion on who sings this song best, and if I didn't think so, I wouldn't have approved your comments. I didn't say she always changes the lyrics; I said that whatever lyrics Bassey uses, they are intentional. Re: Your last sentence: I have over 700 clips loaded over several yrs and Probably have made 30 comments
Fabulous! Glenn Close owns these songs though! Beautiful songs and beautiful performance
I like Shirley Bassey and she was talented, but she is no match to how Glenn Close performed this song. Heck, I didn't know Close could sing until her performance in Sunset Boulevard. But here, Close takes the crown.
😃😀
so much better than Elaine page and the rest of the ladies who attempted this
@sas9023055 And yet, She has done other show tunes and sung them as written. Like i said i got no problem with her. To take it a step further... It would have been phenomenal to have seen her IN sunset blvd. because the ONLY satisfying Norma Desmond I EVER saw on stage is Glenn Close! Lupone, Buckley, Paige, Caroll.... they all palled in comparison in MY OPINION
-this is my personal opinion and we now return you to your regularly scheduled comments-
@mikeride101 If it wasn't for you I wouldn't have noticed that diction mistake as we know the lyrics and assume the singer sings them as they were written.
The leopard coat was not well cut.
Honestly stunning.
Some of her diction dissapoints me though "make your sad hat sing..?!!" ;-D
But still, she's a legend. LOVE!!!
she is so much better singer than Patti LuPone or Elaine Paige! Love her!
comparing different people's styles is freaking narrow minded
bravo!
Beautiful voice, wonderful presence but lacks the edge and expression of Judi Connelli. Connelli has that unique ability to have perfect diction merged with clipped pathos.
+Margaret Handasyde The world loves Dame Shirley Bassey. So who in hell is Judy Connelli?
I love her great voice but I don't think she can replace Glenn Close in this song.
+fellow111411 Are you kidding? I adore Glenn Close, but she doesn't have this kind of voice.
