A funny story is that, his opponent in Eurobasket, Audie Norris, actually named his son Nikos in honor of Nick Galis. When your opponent names his kid after you, you know your greatness is unfathomable.
Nick is definitely the MJ of Europe. As the coach of the once superb Yugoslavia team said: "We have a plan on how to stop all 4 Greek players...Reporter: You mean 5? No-4....Galis is unstoppable"
@Cop Anders He did indeed. On an exhibition match between NC vs National team Greece. There were 2 games, some footage exists from the first, first game MJ got 35, Galis got 27 or 25. Nick Galis has a god status for us Greeks for many reasons. - Coming from America, he was the first real professional on Greek sports. This means that he wanted to get paid (most of the Greek athletes back then with the exception of footballers were part time athletes), but he was also a very hard worker. His success has driven a lot of the younger generation to see sports in a different way. - He also, made basketball popular and became a professional sport. - His failures back then in the Euroleague was due to the fact that no foreign players were allowed in Greek championship (Bosman law was not active back then), and there was a handful number of great Greek players. Euroleague powerhouses Panathinaikos and Olympiakos were created with many foreign players - or players that somehow got the Greek nationality. - The achievement, that Greeks got gold at 1987 and silver at 1989 Eurobasket with much stronger teams, with a team that did not have depth made him a god. - Galis is both a HoF in Fiba and NBA (Naismith Memorial Basketball HoF). - Galis was inspiration for a lot of Greek basketball legends. The next gold generation achieved more than him (Eurobasket gold at 2005, World Silver at 2006 with a USA win). It maybe harder for Giannis to achieve something similar, because European teams are more talented right now than in the past and also, Greek team is not as talented as 2005 (with the exception of Giannis of course).
Also a reason for no Euroleague is that Aris where he played had enough money to pay Galis ans Yannakis but not much more money to pay a full team. And then alsp the 1,2 foreign players allowed were bad choices, not good choices.
Galis had also the ability to stay in the air longer than expected. His performances in lifting weights during training were insane. In a documentary ioannidis, legendary greek trash talking coach in aris, said he was lifting close to 330 in leg exercises which is insane for the 80's.His legs were made of steal. His side steps have been analyzed as well. The way he combined speed accuracy and always being one step ahead of everyone. His mindstep took the game in the entire europe to another level.Everybody wondered "How does he do this?".True story now.10 years ago in one of my previous jobs.A friend of my employer was an amateur boxer with aris.Trainings back then took place also in alexandreio stadium in a different room. After training they had to cross the arena in order to exit. They saw galis walking up and down the stairs struggling a lot."galis is struggling.what the hell".Once they passed really close to him they realized he had tied weights to his legs.He was the first professional basketball player ever in europe and those amateur boxers realized it that day. When that guy was telling this story he had a look in his eyes. That was admiration. It was love respect and mostly "i wish i was him".This is galis.A living god among us.
At my school in Athens we all played football, after 1987 they announced that all sports in the courtyard were banned, only basketball! There is no Greek at my age (46) who does not know the basics of basketball.GALIS❤❤❤
@@torisfour1566 Fanis was the most complete player, even more so than Giannakis and Galis. Unfortunately, he was riddled with injuries, bad habbits, and unfavourable career contracts... if he wasnt, he would have been THE legend, very close to that of Galis. I am 10 year older than you guys, and we played basketball idolising players like Amerikanos, Zoupas, and others...The centrer of basketball at the time was the fields around Nea Filadelphia and Dafni-Ymittos...
Many thanks for this trip down memory lane guys. Galis is the cornerstone of Greek basketball he was the centerpiece of an excellent 1987 Greek team and the unbelievable success they brought indeed made the entire country play baskeball since. Those who were not born at the time will probably not understand the magnitude of that success, but consider this, what it took to prevail over the then Yugoslavia and Soviet union. Imagine facing a team comprised of all the countries that were soviet union, Or Yugoslavia, imagine Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and a few other countries fielding one team today from all their best players put together. Just a few names for 1987 Yugoslavia: Dražen Petrović, Toni Kukoč, Stojko Vranković, Vlade Divac, Dino Rađa, Žarko Paspalj and these were just the Yugoslavian youngling role players coming off the bench (except for Petrovic)... Amazing times for Greek baskeball. Thanks again and maybe make a basketball legends series for other important players of the recent European past as well. Plenty of amazing European players!
The influence of this man can also not be understated. Made basketball the greatest sport in Greece. Made an entire country celebrate with his achievements back in ‘87. No Greek slept that night
He gave us (Maccabi Tel Aviv) so much trouble. Unfortunately, he failed to make Aris the champions of Europe. Galis and Giannakis were a formidable duo.
Αt that time the Greek teams were allowed to have only one foreigner. If Aris could have some good Americans/Serbians or any other nationalities to help Galis and Giannakis, he would be dominating the European championhip for sure.
One of the biggest mistakes Aris made was to focus basically only on Galis. Yes, he was a God and with Giannakis they were amazing but we needed players that Maccabi and Barcelona had. It was basically 1v5. That's why he has games with 40+ points but our best finish is 3rd place. We never even reached the final
Great player. No doubt. Those late mid to late 80's In Europe were great with Galis, Sabonis, Petrovic, Oscar, Riva, etc... I live in the USA so could only follow most of it by reading Corriere Della Sera and watching the Mundobasket and Olympic coverage.
Galis is definitely the best player to never play in the NBA. Later generations can argue about Bodiroga and Diamantidis, but most people do not understand that Galis's feats while still being amazing by today's standards were even more impressive, considering that he was a 6ft guard getting most of his points in the paint. In today's game with the explosion of the 3 pointer and the higher pace it is way easier to score / rebound / assist. Every superstar has bloated numbers. So 33.5 ppg in Europe (40 min games) in the 80's is INSANE! Also, the man walked in the air, so....
@@alexandrosbeleris6957 I will admit that ranking players is a bit subjective. Schmidt was indeed an amazing scorer but I believe that Galis's impact on the sport was greater. Brazil had basketball tradition way before Schmidt came. However, Galis changed the course of European basketball. If Greece didn't win in 1987, the sport might have remained in relative obscurity within the country. That means no 9 Euroleague titles in 17 years for Greece, no Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Papaloukas, Giannis, Itoudis and even possibly Doncic too. Yes, I know it is hypothetical, but the turning point was so distinct that you cannot ignore it. In terms of impact, for me, Galis is comparable only with Jordan.
I moved from Thessaloniki to Athens in the 80s. When kids in my new school asked me what team do I support, I replied Aris, then they always asked me what team I support in football since they all were Aris in basketball. A true God for us Aris fans.
Galis has this scoring without 3s. It was drives among taller players and shooting while guarded by one or more taller players, which made the hooks special.
Not the best all around player we have ever seen in Europe, but certainly the greatest scorer ever, noone will ever be the scoring machine he was. Top scorer in every competition he played. As Sabonis mentioned, if Galis wanted to score he would do it no matter the opponent. Drazen Petrovic said "if i am the son of the devil, then Galis is the devil himself". At Galis era, all opponent teams would focus on stopping the rest of the players of Galis' team , for Galis they just knew that he would score 30 or 40 points, they could do nothing to avoid that. The Greek basketball God indeed, the one and only Nick Galis! I feel blessed to have lived in his era.
The sheer amount of talent Nikos had was something you experience once in a lifetime if you are lucky enough like many of us who grew up during his era. Unbelievable player, moves, shots, scoring, descent defender for his size although some times he neglected that part of the game, 30.5 ppg for his carreer, awesome passer, great handling of the ball, incredible first step, strong leadership skills, while he also had that unrivaled Jordan and Kobe like work ethic. This guy (along with his very talented teammates during that time) showed Greece how to win and what it takes to be the best and really uplifted our basketball to a world class level for the next 30 years inspiring an entire younger generation. Too bad he was forced to retire too early because of his coach at Panathinaikos who wanted to push him out of the starting five.
Galis played at the times Jugoslavia and Russia had the biggest Players and National Teams. Huge Education and Tradition. He was able to break this Teams alone. He hadnt the Assistance or Support with other Superstars. Scoring in 40 Minutes Gammes 30 to 50 Points is huge.
@@infotrady2178 if you ask me.. Fanis Xristodoulou was the best next to Galis. Real good in defence and offence. Complete Player with a good Attitude. I think he had a chance to play in the NBA
I see a lot of comments and I would like to add some more perspective on Galis' impact for basketball in Greece. In 1968 AEK Athens, won the European cup final. The game was hosted in Kalimarmaro stadium (open) with 80 thousand attendants, I think it's still the Fiba record of attendance in a single match. Nevertheless, even this success (which was huge for the nation) didn't really ignite basketball... Galis' performances and eventually the first (national) European title in 1987 made everybody fall in love with basketball and of course as many said and Galis during his hall of fame inauguration , every single neighborhood and school back then installed a hoop. It took the caliber and achievements of one single player to inspire a whole nation and draw of course the attention of all the basketball powerhouses of the time (national or clubs in Europe).
what you forgot to emphasise is that EVERY TEAM had ONE goal to stop him with 2 or 3 players , and despite that he scored 30+ points with 60% , he was no surprise to any team or got his points through assists , one of the most unstoppable offensive players ever to play the game , his in the paint shots with 2-3 pumpfakes in the air over 7 feet players will remain legendary.
It definitely shows that you consider the person very close to you. Like a family friend that you know him well, you respect him because he is friend of your parents and yet you are able to talk to him without thinking is something untouchable.
Nick Galis is the legend of Europe and as a Greek ima proud of him , but i can't forget the late also huge player Drazen Petrovic . The Mozart of European basketball
Galis changed by himself a whole country. Before Galis basketball was almost nowhere in Greece. Those who never seen him playing, cannot imagine how good, "game changer" player Nick was
MJ is a different beast altogether, both legendary scorers for sure, but other than that they were wildly different players. There's a little known fact that probably most viewers won't know: During his tenure with Aris (and I think some games with PAO BC, but I'm not 100% on that) Galis formed with Panagiotis Giannakis one of the best backcourts in Europe, but before they joined forces Giannakis was playing for Ionikos and they had a legendary game as opponents. On 24/2/81 Ionikos vs Aris ended after overtime 113-114 and Galis scored 62 points to snatch the victory for Aris, while Giannakis scored a mere 73 points... No 3pointers mind you!
That game took place on a Saturday in Nikaia tiny sportshall - we had school on Saturdays those days and we went after class to watch it, what a game...
There is a story that might interest you - I don't remember who, but a Panathinaikos co-player has said it. When he went to Panathinaikos, he was 35. He was doing his personal training shooting from various positions in Panathinaikos training arena, wearing his jacket. The other guys of the team saw him and noticed he couldn't lift more than 10-20cm from the floor when shooting. As Galis was famous for rising from the floor and... staying afloat, they said "Damn... Galis got old after all". He finished his training, removed his jacket, only to reveal that he wore a weight vest inside and did all his training with that. That was Galis - at 35.

I was 5 years old when with leadership of Galis we won Soviet Union,i remember people running at the streets and tons of flares and explosions from dynamites! He will always be a legend to our hearts!
We LEARN & WORSHIP basketball in Greece, because this tiny TITAN, Nick Galis!!! I can't remember WHO ELSE Greek we worship SO MUCH, as Nick Galis! Even his very strong rivals had HUGE respect for Galis! In Greece, there is FANATIC RIVALRY between atheltic clubs (like Olympiakos, Aris, Panathinaikos, AEK, PAOK, etc)... But, EVERY SINGLE GREEK worship Nick Galis, no matter what! Galis is the ULTIMATE "Goat" for the Greeks, ...FOR EVER! And tonight (4/8/23), Galis' Greek Nat. Team shirt with the magic number "4" became IMMORTAL - will never be used (ever!) in the Greek Nat. Basketball Team!
For Greek basketball, he is greater than MJ: He made Greeks love the sport, he put Basketball in the families. Every Thursday, all Greek families waited to watch Aris' Euroleague games, to watch Galis play! We owe him so much!
Galis is even bigger than MJ, because of his impact on a whole nation. His accomplishment was that he inspired the next generation of Greeks in every competitive field and made basketball the no 1 sport in Greece. Analogically, he was more influential than MJ. That's why he deserves our respect.
My congratulations, great job,After Galis, all the kids went out on the fields to play any sport and so we produced very good athletes in other sports as well.THANK YOU N.GALIS
I met Galis when I was 8 and got his autograph - it was an amazing day. I always have a debate with my dad - for me bodiroga and milos teodosic were better players, but I was too young to appreciate Galis in his prime. Either way, I am greatful for Galis - without him we wouldn't have Antetokounmpo. On a side note, all the Greek diaspora I have met in Chicago and the rest of America are really cool people and I love how they have held on to their European roots. I hope to go back there one day.
I fully understand why you would mention Bodiroga but Teodosic?? C'mon. Teodosic isn't even the best Serbian ever, how could he be the best European ever?
@@giuseppemaggio5894 Milos will always be my favourite player. I'll always remember that 3 point shot against Spain in 2009 and his style of basketball made me fall back in love with basketball. His passes were pure poetry. I hope one day to visit Valjevo and drink rakija till the morning reminiscing about teodosic plays.
@@EduardAlexogiannopoulos I get your point but personal preference and quality are 2 different things. I really loved Andrea Bargnani as a player but I would never claim that he Is the best European PF ever
I was 10 years old when we won the Eurobasketball competition in 1987. Unforgettable moments and then later it was like we were reprogrammed to play basketball instead of football. It would not be possible without Galis. He is a semi-god for my generation
Many wonder how this guy wasn't blocked all the time. He was only a 1.85m guard who didn't rely on distant shooting like all the one-dimensional guards of that era. Instead, he challenged the defense by attacking them like a siege ram. He literally didn’t hesitate to go against centers and forwards as if they were nonexistent. The level of humiliation and mocking he directed towards them was unbelievable - something nobody could replicate. He was a unicorn. Nobody could recreate his style even today. We have seen numerous players with similar styles, but I haven't seen anyone play like him. Being so short and able to score so many points near the rim and in the mid-range with a career FG% over 60% is simply something nobody could ever recreate. P.S. At 3:21, we see a reason why Galis was almost never blocked. Besides what most say about his explosiveness and his ability to control himself midair, it was, of course, his IQ and the way he used the backboard. Galis was one of the best ever basketball players at using the backboard, and that includes everyone, even in the NBA. Watch how high the ball hits the board before falling into the basket. Watch closely how high the trajectory of the ball is, and that explains why guys who were 2.15m or 2.20m couldn't block him.
Almost all his shots were guarded, and by one or more taller or bugger guys, and the game was slower with less space and set attacks ans defences. It was special hooks and shots. Maybe this is why someone would not understand from papers. They did not understand his break of the back while on air.
In the clip where Giannis referred to Gallis, he called him Mr. Nikos which is a sign of respect in Greece, and differentiates him from the other players he simply referred to by their last names.
One time Galis was asked by a reporter "Why don't you dunk the ball more often?" because he never dunked even when he was alone on a fast break , and his response was "When they make dunks worth 3 points then i will"
NBA existed before MJ. Basketball in Greece didn't really exist before Galis. Galis forced a whole society to watch basketball, Greece's youth to play basketball and also forced a radical change on government policies in terms of sports. A football (soccer for our us friends) dominated country, suddenly appeared to have a hoop in every school and neighbourhood.

Nick had a bunch of skills, that even today would be top notch, enough to place a player in the elite. He had a huge jump shot, very strong legs and core, which made him look like he was staying in the air, not the fancy way MJ did, but with similar success. He had great touch, control of the ball, new the board and how the ball reacts with it. His first step was explosive. Enough for the opponent guarding him to lose him. He enjoyed physical contact. Never hesitated to rush within the whole defense and score from the paint. Like Giannis, but in a 6" body. And he was a great in shooting 3s, steals and assists. Some people underestimate these facts, but he was a great defender too. As he was saying in his few interviews he gave all these years, he kept energy for when it mattered most. A bionic athlete, with a great physical condition. Bless you Nick!
I believe they played twice in 1983. Once on October 20th part of the Dimitria Tournament in Salonica. The other played as an exhibition the next day. UNC won the tournament against Red Star Belgrade in 2OT with Jordan hitting the game winner.
That is a great video, and he is the GOAT of european basketball, considering all the facts you talk about, for example his height. He is an idol for all of greeks 40+ years old. Not for the peformance, but mainly for tha fact that short can win against taller, poor against reacher, few against many. You need to work hard, believe in yourself, and do it like Galis.
...in Galis era...when Aris was playing an international game...all Greeks supported Aris and watched the games...no matter what team they were...this had never happened before and never happened again...!
Galis is the GOAT of Greek and European basketball, he brought many new elements to the whole continent (Greece included) at a time that there were only a handful of European players in the NBA. There is no doubt that in his generation you also have Kukoc, Drazen P and Divac, as well as Sabonis that were also greats, but Galis remained in Europe, had over a decade of continuous high impact and also had to overcome his physical disadvantage with unbelievable skill and athleticism which was the result of extremely hard work and professionalism which did not exist ANYWHRE in Europe at the time. Also, whatever he won in international competitions was achieved with (apart from Giannakis) not as good teams around him as the other greats of the time.
When i show for first time Antetokoumbo playing in NBA, I notice his ...Gallis style and technique plus of course his own talent and physical dimensions.
He did use only his right hand..even with this "weekness" he dominated completely..i had the priviledge to see him play very early on,way before 1987 because i was getting free tickets from the federation and as a fan of dr j i spotted Galis mid air adjustments and followed him in every game i could..i remember debates with othe guys telli g me that other greek shooting guards were better..ee are talking 1980/81..by the way galis was not well accepted by the rest of the greek guards snd was getting freezed alot in the beginning..
I agree totally with giannis: if there wasn't Galis probably either Spanoulis neither Giannis would have played basketball because after him every neighborhood in Greece had a basketball playground
Nick for me is one of the best athletes in history and a great character and noble person. even though I grew up in a family that supported PAOK Salonika, we often used to watch matches of ARIS because of him.

Τα πες όλα ρε φίλε!!
Also a reason for no Euroleague is that Aris where he played had enough money to pay Galis ans Yannakis but not much more money to pay a full team. And then alsp the 1,2 foreign players allowed were bad choices, not good choices.
With the exception of one that doesnt even want to play here*
Galis had also the ability to stay in the air longer than expected.

Dont forget giannakis and fanis my friend.Giannakis was a real scoring machine, but stepped back a little for nick and teams better function...
Galis is undoubtedly one of the greatest players ever. Not only skill but the impact he had on the sport during his playing days.
He’s scoring skills was beyond this world
This guy makes me cried every time i watch his videos. Thank you for everything Nick.
Galis was a dancing player.
Magnificent.
I watched him the whole decade in the 80s.
God given talent, larger than life.
Jordan is the Nick Galis of America
Nick Galis had greater scoring percentage
👏👏👏👏👏👏
He gave us (Maccabi Tel Aviv) so much trouble. Unfortunately, he failed to make Aris the champions of Europe. Galis and Giannakis were a formidable duo.
Because Aris had big gaps as a team, outside of Galis Giannakis and another 1,2 players.
Galis = Phenomenon. ❤❤❤ He raised Greek basketball with his shoulders to the sky
Great player. No doubt. Those late mid to late 80's In Europe were great with Galis, Sabonis, Petrovic, Oscar, Riva, etc... I live in the USA so could only follow most of it by reading Corriere Della Sera and watching the Mundobasket and Olympic coverage.
You are probably from Latin America or Europe because I never met an American who knows world basketball
@@ceegun I live in Indiana.
He isn't the best.Oskar Schmidt is the best. And I'm Greek but we have to admit the truth
I highly doubt anyone would say Diamantidis as the best ever to not play in the NBA. Especially when Kill Bill exists.
@@the8thman he played in the Houston rockets
@@andreasantoniadis14 Ah correct i guess. If that counts.
What a fantastic video. We are absolutely grateful. An Aris Thessaloniki fan from Manchester UK
It is indeed a fantastic and fascinating video. I’m an AEK fan from Leeds.

Unbelievable Scorer,A legend,Thanks for sharing this!😊☝
Nick Galis is the GOAT of European Basketball.
I feel blessed to have lived in his era.
best all around was kukoc
Ok, but not alone, Galis is the greatest but Greece had also players like Panayiotis Yannakis, Fasoulas, Christodoulou, etc
@@infotrady2178 if you ask me.. Fanis Xristodoulou was the best next to Galis. Real good in defence and offence. Complete Player with a good Attitude. I think he had a chance to play in the NBA
@@MURATTI77 I totally agree, If Gallis was the Jordan of Europe, Christodoulou was the Charles Barkley
Such a great point. It was not only his success but the beauty of his game that made the whole nation fall in love with the sport.
true but i would like to add that greeks have a secret or no secret dislike for titles sponsored by junda
what you forgot to emphasise is that EVERY TEAM had ONE goal to stop him with 2 or 3 players , and despite that he scored 30+ points with 60% , he was no surprise to any team or got his points through assists , one of the most unstoppable offensive players ever to play the game , his in the paint shots with 2-3 pumpfakes in the air over 7 feet players will remain legendary.
Giannis calling Galis "Mr Nikos" and first name basis for the rest shows a big level of respect
It definitely shows that you consider the person very close to you. Like a family friend that you know him well, you respect him because he is friend of your parents and yet you are able to talk to him without thinking is something untouchable.
as a Greek ,thank you so mutch ,he is the reason ,why we start play basket
Nick Galis a true not only European but worldwide basketball legend!!!
Nick Galis is the legend of Europe and as a Greek ima proud of him , but i can't forget the late also huge player Drazen Petrovic . The Mozart of European basketball
Galis changed by himself a whole country. Before Galis basketball was almost nowhere in Greece. Those who never seen him playing, cannot imagine how good, "game changer" player Nick was
Nick Galis and David Ancrum were the two masters of the "glass". We were lucky to watch them both going for 40 points in every game.
We owe everything Greece has been able to achieve in basketball to this man.
The best about Galis videos are the quotes of his peer basketball legends, such as Petrovic, MJ, Sabonis and others.
yeah SABAS QUOTE IS THE BEST !! EVEN HE KNOW NICK IS GOAT
He is our basketball God for his talent, sports ethics and values. He made thousands of young kids play basketball in the streets. God bless you Nick

Over and above the stats and the trophies, what was astonishing and unforgettable was the unparalleled beauty of his playing
3:00 Galis cutting the net for Aris. This is it. This is the goosebumps moment.
He made a nation love basketball
Amazing video bro thank you it is honor for greeks and generally greek basketball.
One time Galis was asked by a reporter "Why don't you dunk the ball more often?" because he never dunked even when he was alone on a fast break , and his response was "When they make dunks worth 3 points then i will"
Nikos Galis the best Greek and European basketball player ever!!! RESPECT

Very good point 🎯

Ο μπαμπας σας ειν' Αριανοοοοος! Greetings from Greece
