  • Three photos, three investigations and three INSANELY FASCINATING stories.
    The Solway Firth Spaceman.
It's fascinated and intrigued thousands of armchair detectives around the world. It's been hotly debated for over 60 years but here's some new evidence that casts light on the mystery.
Were we really visited by an alien from outer space on 23rd May 1964 or is there a more earthly explanation to this riddle? It was 'debunked' some years ago but many still do not believe the explanation.
The photograph has been unexplained for decades - but this video gets us closer to the truth than ever before. It's one of the most famous photos of all time and we're going to deconstruct it like never before.

The Bronte Sisters. Les Sours Bronte.
The Brontë Sisters wrote some of the finest works in the English language including Wuthering Heights, Jayne Eyre and The Tennant of Wildfell Hall.
Emily Brontë, Charlotte Brontë and Anne Brontë were celebrities of the mid 19th century - There are no known photos of them.
    Or is there?
In this video we're going to look at some key research into a recently discovered photograph that just COULD be them.
Researchers and arm-chair detectives have poured over every bit of detail of this photograph and many believe it IS them.

I have always believed Annie’s head looks small because she is looking down at something in the grass (perhaps a flower) and, thus, her head is tilted forward making it so we cannot see her full head. I also thought perhaps the dome of the “space helmet” was simply a puff of clouds in the sky beyond…though I like your moon theory much better! Brilliant work!

I’m with you on the Bronte sisters! For me, there are lots of “connections” that support that the photo is of them. I wasn’t too sure until you mentioned the Daguerre-o-type and that cinched it for me because people went crazy over photography when it first came on the scene. It makes perfect sense that once the art advanced people would want to take photos of the Daguerre-o-types to have extra copies for family and friends who had passed on. Goodness, I do that today to preserve extra copies of old family photos!
    Loved this!!

I really like your theory about the moon in the spaceman photo. I absolutely believe it was the photographers wife who had wondered into the background and was walking away to look at the view. I figured she must have been wearing something white on her head or maybe it was a cloud in front of her in the sky. But it does seem likely it was the moon base on your research. Great video 👍

The apparent smallness of her head could have simply been the result of her looking down at some flowers.

The photo of the Bronte sisters is most definitely them. I also believe they spent some time in France, for Anne's health, they taught at a school there. It really annoys me when these so called experts renounce things as not being them. Ladies in France have worn straw hats since the 18th Century. You can take a normal Breton hat and shape it however you want, turning up the sides make it easier to fasten with a ribbon for the UK weather.

Regarding the "spaceman." I've been a photographer most of my life, and it's amazing what you don't see when you're taking a photo, that only becomes apparent when you look at it later. It could easily have been his wife who wandered into the photo, and whom he failed to notice at the time and to recall as having been in it.

Let's face it, we only have the Dads say so that his wife was behind him and that there was no one else around at the time🤨 But the reason for this discrepancy is there were 3 photos taken within a few seconds of each other, confirmed by the photo technician of the counter on the negatives. The moon, nor the 'wife' were present in either photo taken a few seconds before and after this one.

Love these investigations! I'm with you on the spaceman being the wife, and the photo of "Les Seurs Bronte" being genuinely of the Bronte sisters. Not sure about Paul McCartney, though. Wouldn't Paul have mentioned seeing a gig by The Quarrymen in one of the gazillion of interviews he's given? Why wouldn't he have mentioned this gig?

Fascinating. I want to point out that the first time I saw the photo of the girl and spaceman, I I identified it as it has been revealed here because that's just what it looked like to me. Being a photographer myself, I tend to see things in a photo for what they are. I can also identify the focal length of a lens and account for depth of field. I saw the photo and immediately saw a woman walking away from the camera, perhaps with her head tilted slightly down. What spaceman? Where? You mean that woman? I couldn't account for the white "dome," however. The moon has solved that mystery, thank you. People seem so quick to believe the fantastic before they will ever consider natural explanations. Oh, and in addition to being a photographer, I was also an investigative journalist, and am now an Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker. Perhaps that helps. And yes, I subscribed. I don't want to ever miss one of these great videos.

So, just a random observation here regards the Bronte photo. I am still 100% open as to whether or not it is the Bronte sisters, but .... with the reply from the Bronte Society asking 'why would anyone want to paint or photograph them?' and 'a comparison of the womens features with those of portraits in existence ....'. I am presuming from that there are, in that case, portraits, if not paintings, in existence! Wouldn't the answer to the first question be 'for exactly the same reason that they had their portraits done'?

Siblings’ attempts at portraiture are appreciated, but it must be said that Cassandra Austen and Branwell Brontë seem to have had approx. the same skill level…

I have to say that when an “official” society or similar group sets their collective jaw against a new theory, I immediately think of what exactly they have to lose by new research. Think of Edward de Vere as the real Shakespeare. Is it likely a seemingly illiterate man wrote the “Shakespeare” plays and poetry or more likely that a member of Eliz I’s court did?
I think that is the Brontë sisters. The curators just want to protect their memorabilia profits.

I think Annie was also looking slightly down and to the right as he snapped the photo.. that is how it seems to me. This would account for the “shortening”appearance of the top of her head in front of the moon.Entirely plausible.. i am new here and already love this channel and your personality and presentation!! Great stuff!

This is where history is helpful. You can see some weather is suddenly rolling in. The clouds behind that particular photo and the wind blowing the little girl's hair all the way forward from the back. While there was no wind, the woman in the photo wouldn't have had a hat and scarf on. But you can bet the farm that as a woman of that time she would have run to the car for the hat and scarf she wouldn't leave home without.
Hairstyles then we're very meticulously coiffed, but they did not have the kinds of strong long-lasting hairspray that came out later. It was absolutely standard for middle class white women everywhere to cover their hairdo in the wind or even wear a cap and scarf to bed to keep it in place.
I remember that at about this time certain nylon blends that were shiny were very fashionable. Pulse scarves are several threads in a scarf would be almost iridescent sometimes.
I think that she, being a mother, notice the quick change of weather, ran to fix her hair with her hat and scarf, and then quickly ran up that knoll to look at the weather coming in. She was hurrying to see if there was any danger and that's why she was so quickly in the frame.
I have experienced all kinds of strange and interesting phenomena and so I always have an open mind. Play coming up with practical solutions to everything you can make those moments that are unexplainable all the more thrilling.

Having done some interesting play in a darkroom myself, we delighted in doing things like this in college. WAAAAY before photoshop,
We re-created some iconic supernatural photographs. The spaceman could also be an old woman in a white sweater and scarf, seen from the back. I actually DO believe there are many things that are unexplained at the moment. But having experience in "alteration" I'm VERY VERY skeptical of photo and video "evidence." They ARE out there.....we just don't actually have photographic evidence yet.

Even if it was Paul (which I think it was) I doubt that Paul would confirm as it goes against the official Beatles narrative since they hit the big time in 63 that Paul first saw John perform at the church fete where he met him for the first time too and played Twenty Flight Rock for John between sets. Paul did confirm though in the Philip Norman biography that he was aware of John as one of the local teenagers.

I really like the concept of your channel! All the research you put into it makes it VERY interesting.
And I'm very interested in all three of these topics and I've read extensively on the "spaceman" and the Brontës, a particular interest of mine (and I was a huge Beatles fan back in the 60's with a big crush on Paul LOL).
I think your explanation for the "spaceman" photo makes a lot of sense -- and makes me wonder why it took so many years for anybody to come up with it. I've read so many over-heated theories by paranormal researchers and now I'm just shaking my head at the simplicity of it all.
I can't agree about the photo of the 3 women, though. To me there is just no way those women are the Brontës, for numerous reasons but mostly it comes down to a gut feeling that the shy, self-conscious (and in Emily's case, highly reclusive) Brontë sisters ever would have posed for a photograph in such a stylish looking, self-assured manner. To me the photo just looks staged. But that's just my opinion. In any case I enjoyed watching yours.
As for Paul, I think it does resemble him though I have no idea if it is him or not (IMO Paul's nose is slightly straighter but could be the camera angle) and how did my 11- and 12-year old glasses-wearing Paul-obsessed back then self never know he wore glasses too 😂.

For the spaceman photo, my first thought was a woman walking away wearing a head scarf. I don’t see her head being part of the moon. Back in that time wearing a scarf over the hair on a windy day was very common. A two color headscarf is what I think it is. I don’t see how it could be mistaken as a “spaceman”. Especially seeing how the arm is bent.

Great observation about the space man photo. It is quite obvious it is the mother and the moon just happens to align perfectly with her head. Not a spaceman/alien for sure. I am not certain it is the Bronte sisters but it sure enough can be. I am a huge Beatles fan and as far as the Rosebery street shot of a guy who looks like Paul McCartney. I can say from an excellent source that it is 100%NOT Paul McCartney, as my source knows Charles Roberts the photographer and Charles knew that guy and said it was not Paul McCartney.

    • @Lethgar_Smith

Well, Paul is on record as saying that "He'd seen John perform before he met him." This is the only event he would likely have seen him perform at, the person does look like they are astride a bicycle, which Paul would have ridden to the location, he is wearing a sport coat like one that Paul often wore, he is wearing glasses like Paul wore at the time, photos of Paul McCartney taken from the same time period match the hairstyle of the person in the photo. ...
Who does your friend claim the person in the photo is?

    • @howcotube
      @howcotube 11 місяців тому

@@Lethgar_Smith Good question, I never asked this credited source but I can perhaps, it was to me the important part was it was not Paul, so I did not need to go any further with it, but now that you asked I can certainly ask soon.

I actually thought the explanations in this video claiming it’s Paul McCartney were weak. There weren’t other kids that age at that time that biked places and wore light colored jackets? I’m mean, it could be Paul McCartney. With how good the explanations were for the other 2 photos though, I wasn’t convinced with this last one. I think this guy wants it to be Paul McCartney and is biased

    • @AngelaMastrodonato
      @AngelaMastrodonato 11 місяців тому

Also, he did a good job showing depth of field for the spaceman photo. I think depth of field may explain why this guy looks taller. The other people may have been closer to the stage. But even then, even if the guy was proven to be the same height, that could still be coincidental

    • @Lethgar_Smith
      @Lethgar_Smith 11 місяців тому

@@AngelaMastrodonato The biggest piece of evidence is that Paul McCartney himself says he was there. And a photo appears that shows someone that looks a lot like him in the crowd. I think that's pretty compelling.

Umm that the pictures werent "developed" untill later, doesnt have to mean anything. Just as painters keep sketches of famous, influential, odd or otherwise prestigious and noteworthy, the photographer might have done the same. He might have heard about their writing endeavours, and maybe even read some of their work, or known them personally. And then, years later either the photographer, or whoever inherits their estate, thought, "could this be worth something?". Or maybe someone knew of a foreign connection to them, and asked "do you perhaps have any photos of the Brontes ? And it was payed and sent for, and then it either had a mishap on the way, had an incorrectly written adress, or the person who wanted it "passed away in the middle of his project". Painters kept sketches, for admirers, enemies, and fans to make copy- paintings, for others, OTHER than the subject or patron/customer that ordered it. And back then that was his right, as an artist. Why wouldnt a photographer do the same ? It might have been a travelling french photographer. Maybe he lost their adress, but kept the photos ? And someone present that KNEW OF the photo, perhaps even someone present, but, not IN the photo, might have asked for it, at a later point in time ? Or a publisher, with connections, maybe. The fact that its developed later, doesnt have to mean a darn thing. If you couldnt pay for the photos, for whatever reason, that could also be a reason. Or an old flame that got turned down, and then no longer wanted it ? Did France have a registry for photographers back then ? Or for the purchases of the chemicals used in the business ? Taxing ? Well, at least bureaucracy is good FOR SOMETHING. Also, they did as many things in a day as we do now, even if we are more fastpaced.Id be sceptical too though. It COULD be fake. But the whole, "it cant be it because it was developed later is BS". If it wasnt for housefires, we would have a lot more old pics today. And theres still a lot of treasures hidden in the nooks and crannies of old houses. Even inside walls and chimneys and such. Who knows what people might find as time goes on ?

Based on what is known about Emily Bronte's personality, I just can't imagine her going to a daguerrotype studio and sitting for a portrait. She was so reclusive. I think the photo is fascinating and does broadly resemble what they must have looked like, but ultimately, I am skeptical.

I can’t believe you were right up the street from me in the Woolton shots! I agree, I think it is Paul tbh.
On the Brontë Sisters…I *100%* think it is them. You can see that it’s Charlotte so clearly from the pillar portrait that we have as a comparison.
On the Spaceman photo…I think that you’ve made an excellent explanation of what makes it the wife…But as an amateur photographer myself, when I’m taking shots I’m *SO* particular & have to have the shot perfect that I do check the surroundings so thoroughly & make sure any friends or family are wayyy out of shot. So with that in my mind, I can’t imagine how he wouldn’t have remembered seeing his wife wander so so clearly from the background, right into the central backdrop/background of a picture that was planned as a portrait of his daughter. A photographer amateur or not, would immediately be aware & notice their companion or a stranger so boldly in view behind the subject. That’s what really throws me here.

The moon is certainly a possible theory for the 'helmet' appearance, however there's another which may be simpler, and more likely? In 1964, the fashionable hairstyle was short and set, fairly bouffant. Also, due to camera limitations, the photographer had to have the sun behind them, leading to a lot of squinty portraits, such as this. The helmet effect could simply be the sun shining through Annie's hair and creating a halo. I can recall a lot of similar photos in my childhood.

i skipped to a spot where I could look at the spaceman photo, before listening to the story. I can see why people could see a spaceman, but what I saw was a grey haired gentleman wearing a dress shirt and a cap, facing the other way, hand on hip or reaching into back pocket. Perhaps admiring the view.. He could use a haircut. It must have been a slow news day, and people are easily spooked. Now that I have listened to the story, I can see mom. I might suggest however, that in the 60s, ladies would often wear a hair bonnet.
