I have been a Believer 62 years and never heard a sermon on Jacob's Ladder. Dr. Sproul truly brought it to life and I learned so much. Thank you for making these sermons available Online.
I appreciated the reminder that Biblical history is compressed. When you read, especially big portions, it does feel like events are happening one closely after the other. But he's right, there are hundreds of years and many generations between some events. And most of these people did not even have written Scriptures yet. I'm sure they felt the silence of God so often.
Same here! What a great reminder. I wonder if there are Bibles out there (apart from study Bibles), that have dates of each major time gap in each chapeter to help readers keep time in context. Would be interesting to see that. Probably in the margins somewhere.
That would be amazing. I know there are chronological Bibles that put the Scripture events in order. (As best they can.) But I don't know if they fill in some of the time gaps with whatever else was happening in the world. I imagine that would make the Bible just too large. @@VertexHero
“Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. “ Psalm 24
Thanks for your insight into Gods word RC!! You may be gone from this planet but Gods word is eternal and always applicable to our living struggle, until He comes again.
This was an incredible listen. Thank you, Ligonier for sharing with us this message and most importantly thank you Jesus for rearing men like R.C. Sproul to share the truth with us.
Though I am 1689 Baptist, I am extremely grateful for the saints who have come from the Presbyterian church. Sproul. John Flavel. John Knox. Eric Liddell. Joel Beeke. Kevin DeYoung. J. Gresham Machen.
@@joshuaj50 There are certainly disagreements within genuine born again followers of Christ on several nonessentials; i.e. eschatology, frequency of the Lord’s supper, contemporary music vs. hymns, etc. Individuals like this person are simply drive-bys; someone just trying to pick an online fight and not interested in having a healthy, edifying, adult conversation.
His way to present this biblical passages is remarkable, praise the Lord for the life of this man. And even now, the Lord is touching us with the presence of His Holy Spirit.
RC is a great story teller. He speaks with such conviction, such love, passion, etc… I enjoy reading scripture, but he brings it much more alive somehow. It’s like you are in the story itself!
Often when I hear sir RCP's messages I get emotional in tears for he speaks with deep sense nit not only study of scripture but also owns responsibility towards GOD
Thanks for posting this sermon on Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, particularly during the Christmas season. My deepest respect and love go out to Pastor R.C. Sproul!
Thank you Ligonier. This lesson is excellent. "Life is lived on this planet as if there were no God." I had only heard of Jacob's ladder and did not know what it represented. I will be watching the entire series.
R.C. Sproul may have gone to be with the Lord but he left an indelible imprint upon my heart. I had a super nice uncle who spent his life farming and my Dad once said "If you have a problem with Knud, you are the problem." I say the same about Mr. Sproul. His brilliant manner of explaining God's word and his gracious manner in doing so left the only offense to be the cross.
God knows how many wonderful sermons this man invested in my life. When I go to heaven, I would love to meet RC Sproul...far more than Paul. God used this man.
There is so much theology in the Holy Scriptures to uncover especially at this time When we consider what really happened over 2000 years ago GOD PUT ON FLESH AND CAME AND WALKED AMONG US And all you can say as a “preacher “ let me tell you about a festival 😢
@@BouncySlim1 “And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” Luke 2
How did that biblical scholar not remember the New Testament passage where Jesus talks about "the angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man? That was my first thought!
Actually the tree in John 1 is a fig tree, not a sycamore, and pictures Israel in their blindness as a nation at Christ's first coming. Then Nathanael recognizes who Christ is, Israel at the second coming. Jesus says he will see greater things than this, which are the nations after the millennium entering the New Jerusalem. A lot to learn here, but this is what Jacob's ladder is representing.
Jacob didn't steal the blessing! Esau didn't care about it.. he cared more about his life.. and that's where the Lord says, if you value your life so much you will lose it, and whoever loses it for my names sake will inherit the Kingdom.. just like when Mary and Martha story when the sister chose to sit at the Lords feet and listen to him.. Jacob and the sister CHOSE what was more important..
It's interesting you say you can't really identify with abraham and that kind of Faith.... . His is what I identify With more than others.... I feel very much like I've had a similar experience. Of course, I am not as great as Abraham. No, but I was in a family that from day one I felt like I didn't belong in. I've never had a group of friends. I felt very alone but God is always called me. I've always had a relationship with God. And he's called me out of a lot of things too..... From where I was living growing up to relationships I needed to get out of...... But abraham is the one identified with the most..... Other players in the word I identify with as people. I want to be like but Abraham is someone. Yes, I want to be like but he's also someone I identify with because we have had similar experiences especially with our God......
Really that hapax Israel's vision is quoted in Psalm 24 seeking the face of God's alike Abraham Moses onwards until truly happen to Risen Lord of us all as well as David's?!

How sad it is to read comments from people who have given their critical thinking abilities over to a MAN! Don't they know Go each and every single believer the Holy Spirit to learn from and not man. We can learn from man, BUT IT MUST be filtered through the Holy Spirit in order to detect falsehoods. Like, for instance, God only loves His 'elect' in the light of Joy 3:16-17! The elect are those found 'IN CHRIST'!!! Stop the deformed theology.

So true! An eye-opener is reading the Bible along side the Annals of the World: James Ussher's Classic Survey of Ancient World History.
