Really appreciate this episode. Thank you! I've only came across the name of this syndrome earlier this year and realized that was what I've been experiencing all these years. Never feeling like I'm good enough and afraid people will think I'm lying about my skills once they see my work. It has gotten worse this year but I'm trying to get myself out of this negative spiral. This episode was comforting in a way and I know I'm not alone.
i really enjoyed Wes' super introspective, super insightful explanation on how he's so self-aware of his own impostor syndrome! i have always struggled with things similar as Wes, though nowhere close to reaching "success" as of now, but it's always stemmed from a "no professional training and knowledge" place :') thank you for letting us know we're not alone!
I def had impostor syndrome when I first started college. I went to a really prestigious school on the East Coast surrounded by people who had gone to these really high-end prep and boarding schools, whereas I was just a West Coast kid who went to a pretty not-great public high school and felt totally out of place. Luckily as time went on, I got over it, but I really vibed with this episode, you guys are awesome!
Therapy and self-reflection has kept me from most of these versions of imposter syndrome, but I've been in the "expert" category forever. I always feel like I don't know enough or that I have the wrong kinds of experience for my job/role.
Love this discussion! I definitely grew up with the "natural genius" mentality because a lot of school came easy to me - I didn't have to study too hard to make good grades, but I also wasn't doing well enough to skip grades or something. Then third year of college, everything suddenly became difficult! Rude awakening. I didn't know how to study, I didn't have those good habits built in because I'd never needed them. So now I face a struggle along the "expert" and "soloist" lines... thinking I need to figure everything out on my own, getting really embarrassed if I just don't know something. Logically, I'm aware of the ridiculousness of these things but they're tough habits to break. And now I'm freelancing in a field where I have no formal training or industry experience... so my confidence is super fragile at the moment. lol It's always good to know you're not the only one struggling with these things!!
Thank you for this! :) I feel like imposter syndrome is so prevalent in our generation, it's a difficult thing to overcome, but we power through. With you guys talking about it, you're making people feel less alone, and helping them realize they should kinder to themselves. That's how I felt hahaha (also, awesome hair, Chris!)
We all know Phil as the face in front of the camera but hearing Wes talk about how he feels really shows how much effort and love he’s putting in behind the scenes so I thought that was really cool :) #wongfu4lyfe
For those who have this issue (and even if you don't have, but you are sort of a leader in your workplace), this article last year in IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Spectrum discussed a few ways to dispel imposter syndrome. I hope this helps somehow. spectrum.ieee.org/news-from-around-ieee/the-institute/ieee-member-news/three-ways-to-dispel-imposter-syndrome
This is good! Thank you for sharing. I can attest to the "hero profile". The Army even touts this, they just tend to call it an "I Love Me" book. It really is helpful.
I'm wondering if Wes is lowkey advertising VitaSoy Lemon Tea or if he has mild OCD considering how well placed it is in front of the camera. I mean, I'm sure this shoot is about a half hour long unedited and the box never changed angles. Lmao.
Hahahaha that's true, like in the close-up angles it's perfectly in the middle, logo perfectly facing the camera, and Wes' shirt is a great backdrop LOL I hope WongFu got paid for this free advertising 😂 Either that or a sponsorship from Vitasoy would be fantastic too
Every time I do well on a paper or an exam I feel shocked and wonder what the professor was thinking giving me a good grade, since I'm basically trash in every conceivable way. That negative voice is very strong but I'm hoping it'll fade as time goes on.
Check out Louise Hay - Mirror work, it really helped me and others lower the negative thoughts in our heads. It is still there but I barely hear it anymore because over the years i’ve learned to listen to the positive thoughts instead. I really hope you know how wonderful you are 🙏🏼
I also feel like I have a mix.. like feeling unqualified but also feeling the need to do things myself and also feeling like a failure if I don't do everything right lol
Wow thank you for this video. Would it be rude for me to say i am so glad to hear i am not the only one. This somehow hits me where it hurts hahahhaa. Dame it you guys but thank you!!
I don't know if it's imposter syndrome, but I fit the perfectionist type. I hate making mistakes, whether it's personal or at work. Even if it's not a big deal.
@@luna.moon88 i think it looks good, but it's way longer than he usually has it because it curls. And the last few videos I ve seen he had his hoody on or a hat. Just surprised how long it really got
I love Michelle's 'Trust the people you brought into your life to tell you the truth! At a conference Arlan Hamilton said she doesn't believe in impostor syndrome anymore. She said if an [idiot] like Trump can get elected, we belong in any room we find ourselves in'.
When Michelle was reading out the different types of imposter syndrome I could just see wes relating to them all lmao 😂 same here tho, I agree that it is common in asian households and upbringings
Idk if I fit into any of these categories. Like I love my work and know that it’s good, but I know someone else will always be better and therefore I am not good enough. That any of the accomplishments and accolades that come my way is out of pure luck or networking and not from my actual hard work and talent when it comes to filmmaking
I had multiple sources! Here is the primary one I referred to by Valarie Young, who's the leading expert on impostor syndrome! impostorsyndrome.com/5-types-of-impostors/

* reads description “I feel attacked already” 😂😂 so relatable
Yep
so thankful that you guys did this video coz I didn't know there is name to it until now.
I’ve been living with imposter syndrome for the longest time. I keep thinking as I get older, it will disappear but alas i think it has gotten worst

"Don't compare your behind-the-scenes to someone else's highlight reel."
I can listen to Wes talk for hours.
Been having that week and omg thank you Wongfu for this episode but definitely can relate to you Wes.
an example of wes’s perfectionism is the wong fu weekends pottery episode
Hahahaha yikes it me
I knew I had imposter syndrome, just didn't know about the types. I'm for sure the natural genius.
@2:27... that gave me a flashback to Offline Episode 1... Production Value, Efficiency, Nothings Impossible, Success!!

all the efforts 🙏🏼
We believe in Wong Fu!!! 💯💯💯 And we appreciate these conversations. Thank you so much
Every Thursday, I look forward to your videos SO MUCH! 🥺❤️
Yay

Did you just say... imposter?😳

5:25 Wes : "does he (benson) have to know everything, no there's someone else in the office that's more like that."
It's Phil isn't it? 😂
Didn't know there were different types... I probably have several of these super severe :(

I agree with almost all the statements of those types 😂 If one little thing in the process goes wrong, then of course it is not a success??
Sus!!!!!😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😓😓😓😓😓😥😥😥😥😥😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😒😒😒😒🥶🥶🥶🥶

SUSSY
Whoa! Chris' hair! 😲😲😲 natural or did he get a perm as well?
I think its just longer than normal, it looks good!
I believe it's natural lol

@@kayejaye4125 thats impressive. I wonder if Phil got even more inspired after seeing Chris's curls
@@darreldupit Yes that is true! He sure did surprise us!

Chris' hair has Shawn Mendes vibes!

Question, after learning this what’s considered normal?
Yay, today is my birthday with lunch break

Mine is definitely the "expert" category
Feel like more free flowing/easy going people would be the worst nightmares to people with imposters syndrome.
Thought Imposter syndrome was Capgras delusions, and was so confused when Wes said he had it lol
kinda sus😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I got this thing called crippling depression, so I never got to experience imposter syndrome.
Sususususuusus imposter is sus
That's something you were suppose to be aware of the minute you thought about putting your private lives on UA-cam
i should be embarrassed, I really thought that this was going to have something to do with Among Us
Ugh you guys are so great. Please don’t ever doubt :( this goes for you guys in the comments too!! All love ❤️

I thought the video was about among us and imposter types 🤦♀️🤦♀️#ineedhelp
SAME GIRL. I was reading the comments hoping I wasn't the only one haha
Chris's ad read........... he got skinny and/or more teenage looking with the hair. Azn neva raisin
I like to think im a actor im my own life
SUS! 😳
Fun fact: "Impostor" is grammatically correct, but people have defaulted to writing "imposter" because it's more widely used.
So imposter is an impostor...
