Wow. I’ve been making lap quilts but now I want to make warm drapes for my house. This video is a pleasure to watch! Not a moment of wasted time. Beautiful. Thank you.
USE THIS TUTORIAL! I followed this step by step and my curtains have turned out BEAUTIFULLY! I did not use the curtain pins…I just bought the clip hoops and clipped them to the top of the curtain…my fabric was a but too delicate for the pins. There is a curtain tape you can buy for the top of curtains but I did not do that. If you want to try this, just make sure you measure everything carefully and watch this video several times then watch it as you sew. Iron, iron, iron then iron again. Make sure your fabric is ironed BEFORE cutting your fabric so you get a nice square piece without bunching. Manhandling the fabric and cutting it is the most difficult part of the process. My fabric was 108 inches wide (it was quilt wideback) so I cut it on the fold on the floor. I used my knee pads a lot! Cut your lining fabric 4 inches narrower than your main fabric and cut it the same length as your finished curtain length…as she says, but is kind of hidden in the video….these turned out perfectly! Thanks so much for the tutorial.
This is the best tutorial I’ve watched on lining drapes. You were detailed but presented it fast so I wasn’t waiting for you to get to the point. And I love that fabric too.
Krista, I became emotional just watching this video. You are very gifted at describing and teaching and you do it in such a succinct way. I’m thrilled to have your instructions. Although I’m experienced at sewing, I’ve never had a professional knowledge and have just given it a try! Your instructions will help me to do my draperies the professional way. I typically lose interest while watching tutorials, because the presenter is slow and tedious in their presentation, but your speed and accuracy at describing makes a project so much more expedient and enjoyable. I’m excited and can’t wait to get started. We are renovating a 1720 hacienda in Mexico with many bedrooms and are using such gorgeous fabrics, which make my projects somewhat daunting, but after watching you, I know I can do this! Thank you for this gift you’ve provided for all of us!
I have been making drapes for years, not a professional, just like to sew! This is BY FAR the best video I have ever seen! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, my recently sewn set turned out amazing!!
Thank you so much for showing us how to make curtains! I wonder if, one day, you could just video a one panel, small lined curtain? My brain is not functioning properly anymore, and I suffer from short term memory loss. I learnt to make curtains this way in the past, but I have to keep being reminded in what order to do things. I short, sharp video would be so wonderful!!
This video has been such a blessing to me! I don’t have much money to work with, but thanks to you I was able to make beautiful drapes and greatly improved the look of our home. I can’t tell you how excited I was to hang the first panel and see how well it turned out. Thank you so much for making this excellent video! It was the only one I watched that I fully understood. I hope you make more.
Can’t thank you enough for sharing your expertise. You are very thorough and concise with instructions and move quickly through the process. Love making my own drapes now. Thank you again!
You should make a how-to video on how to make how-to videos. This moved at a good pace, was concise and informative! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I love your commentary with this tutorial, and I learned a few things even though I did a curtain and blind making course two decades ago. You covered things that came up for me long after that course was finished and I could not contact the instructor to ask questions. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.🌹
Krista, thank you so much! And thanks to your husband too for urging you to make this video! I had a lot of questions, but instead of asking I just trusted your process and my curtains look amazing and professional! I bought instructions from you for $1 early Sunday morning. I didn't think I needed them, but they came in handy--turns out I did! I am so proud of them! I wish I could show them to you!
I"m so excited to hear about your curtains! It really isn't a difficult process, just a matter of doing the steps in the right order. You can post photos of your curtains at The Courtyard forum at the Avlea Folk Embroidery website (www.avleaembroidery.com)--I'd love to see them!
This was so incredibly helpful! I've sewn my whole life, mostly heirloom children's clothing, but home dec has never been my forte, mainly due to space. I just needed a simple pair of drapes for my granddaughter's new "big girl" room and this video was just the ticket! Thank you so much!! - Beth
So glad you found it helpful! As you can see, it's just a lot of figuring out the right order in which to sew the seams and along with a few tricks and anyone can sew really beautiful drapes!
❤I watched several videos about making drapes. This was my favorite, straight to the point, with markings, so I could go back to the section I needed as I was sewing.
Thanks Krista, a fantastic and straight forward video with lots of hints and tips - this is going to be a great help. I'm at the beginning of learning to sew but having a fun learning this wonderful skill. Shaun
This is a very good instructional video. edit: I've been researching making this type of drape for a couple weeks now, and this is by far the best video. Not just making the drapes either, all of the "pro-tips" along the way to the finished product. I still wish it wasn't shot it in "portrait" mode though. :)
Super professional advice. Motivated me to do it myself (never even operated a sewing machine before) and although it takes a long time, it saved me a lot. Thank you. Great video!
Wow this video is only 27 minutes long and you have finished the panel, well done…I have just finished one panel today and it’s taken me roughly 4 hours with pressing and measuring etc. Fantastic job. Love that fabric by the way.
This has been such a incredibly helpful video. I just want to hang out with Krista and learn all the things!! Very enjoyable. I have never done drapery before and with all the helpful tips, my project seems to be coming together beautifully.
What a joy to be taught by a professional! Thank you, Krista for sharing your expertise. Your lesson has enabled me to successfully create window treatments for my home. You are a great instructor to teach amateurs like myself how to navigate the mysteries of curtain construction and lining techniques. Amazing.
Your comment made my day! It makes me SO happy when people feel like making curtains and drapes is easy and achievable because it allows us to bring so much beauty into our homes!
AMAZING VIDEO! I had planned to attempt drapes in my dining room but have been very intimidated as I am a very amateur seamstress. I watched your video and was able to complete two drapery panels without difficulty! It took me much longer than it took you to complete the panels but I’m so happy! I would love it if you would do a tutorial on different types of valences and how to make them. Maybe Roman shades too? Thank you!
Thanks so much, Krista for the fantastic video! My son recently moved into a condo with very tall ceilings, and I want to sew lined draperies for his living room and master bedroom as a housewarming gift. I watched several how-to videos, but yours was the one that took me from "Uhm, I THINK I can do this...?" to "Oh, I definitely can do this!" Appreciate the clear, concise, step-by-step information, demonstration and tips. Thanks you for giving me the confidence to tackle this project. FABULOUS VIDEO!!!
Ive been looking for a tutorial to sew my own curtains and I cant express how delighted I was to come across yours. Your knowledge, articulation, and speed at which you relay information absolutely resonated with me. Thank you so so much.
What a great tutorial! Thanks! I particularly like the little educational insights along the way such as not just that the lining should be shorter but also why. 👍
I bought several duvet covers at the Salvation Army Thrift Store and they have a nice fabric on one side and a plain fabric on the other side (a ready made fabric and liner). I bought them to make lined drapery for my living room window. I have bought several second hand books on how to make curtains. They all explained measuring the window and simple curtains (so simple a 5-year old can make them with no instructions). None of them explained anything understandable for lined drapes and I have been so frustrated with these duvet covers on hand and no way to turn them into lined drapes. Thank you!
This video is amazing. Im making my first pair of curtains today. Im amateur. I like that you are direct & to the point and all the little tips you give... those are so helpful. Thank you for an amazing tutorial.
I just recently found your video on how to sew lined draperies. I made a set for the first time following your video, which I continually went back to watch as I sewed the draperies. You did an excellent job showing us amateurs how to do it. I was able to sew both panels in one afternoon. I was hoping to be able to post a picture of them, but I don't see that option. Thank you.
That's fabulous! I'm always so happy to hear these success stories! If you want to post on Instagram, you can tag me @kristamwest or tag #avleafolkembroidery. Can't wait to see them!
I’ve never enjoyed watching some sew more than this video! You kept it moving and gave a lot of good information. drapery has been my “Waterloo” for too long! One thing on the thread clipping that I found works along with what your do; I clip close on the right side first, then when I turn it over and pull-up the other thread, I tug it a bit and that usually pulls that tail inside the hem to hide it the I clip.
I agree with the comments. I can’t afford to have drapes sewn professionally and wanted to add beauty and coziness to a guest bedroom. This tutorial gave me the confidence to try! It has been such a fun project. Thank you so much! You’re an excellent teacher.
Thanks ! I really enjoy all the skills you have , you really love to sew . Your work room is impecable as the way you trim all the threads seems. The way you share your knowledge is a gift to me . Thanks
Thank you for making this doable! Your explanations and real-time instruction was amazing. I just made a double wide drape to cover my sliding glass door. I especially am grateful that you mentioned matching the patterns on the panels I was sewing together. I'm not sure that would have crossed my mind before I cut the fabric.
Great set up, over all the years I marvel at how the ironing board has not changed, or how few change that beast up. Agree on pressing makes a world of difference.
This video is excellent. GREAT teaching method. To the point …. I don’t think I have ever watched a UA-cam video that I didn’t have some gripe… yours is perfect. Thank you so much!,
Awesome video. Totally instructive and to the point. And I really appreciate the lined drapes cutting guide chart. I printed a copy and put it in a pocket in my sewing journal. Now I can make some really professional-looking drapes for my sewing room! Thanks very much. 😊
Thank you for teaching me how to sew drapery panels! I have a large house with 100 windows, so being able to dress many of them myself will save a fortune.
Oh how funny! I was just thinking about you this morning and remembering how you and your little girl (who is not so little now I'm sure!) used to pick me on Sunday mornings for Divine Liturgy back when I was a graduate student at PSU studying, among other things, Arabic. A few days ago I made a basic lined curtain panel for a kitchen cabinet (my first sewing project after years of being too ill to sew) and it just didn't look nice and crisp like I wanted it to. So I hopped on Google to find a video to show me how to do it right and here you are! And yes, as everybody is saying, it IS a great video. Very clear, very useful (unlike so much else on here!). Thanks so much for the video and it's so lovely to see you! Hope you and Father Alban are well.
This is an awesome video!! I've been sewing for an interior designer for a couple of years now but have always been afraid of making lined draperies. You make it look so simple and I so appreciate that. I'm going to make a panel for practice. Thank you again.
Ok no disrespect... but you are a bad ass. You put that baby together in a matter of one day, and the method used... yes it was professional but super easy 👌, even with how fast you were moving I learned a lot. Thank you very much for sharing your 25+ years of sewing tips and tricks. Also your dad's carving was a sweet touch left on his behalf 😢... a nice memory and beautiful work of art 😘 to look at when you are doing what you love. New subie.
So helpful! I’m glad to see a pro use the “micropleats”. I do that a lot (I’ve only been sewing a few years) and figured it was a no-no but I’m not good enough to cut perfectly!
Amazing work - thank you for sharing, Krista! I love making linen curtains and as an amateur I look to improve my skills by not only practicing a lot but also watching videos and learning from professionals. No matter how much I know I always find something new that I incorporate in my work. For example, thanks to this video I started using the trick of micro-pleating with blunt needles too :)
In the U.K. we use blind hem machines and tend not to sew the bottom hem as you have done which you can see. For the top of the curtain pencil pleat tape is used. The zinc hooks are used for triple or double pleat headings which have an amount of hand sewing for a professional appearance. Selvedges are cut off for the most part as many fabrics over here will have design names printed along them which does not look good when curtains are hanging. Just goes to show how differently curtains are made in one country to another.
just found this and thank God I did. a very comprehensive step by step instructional! i have been looking for days and finally i found yours. its wonderful, detailed and complete!!! thank you and thank you again........ps......i am sewing along with this!!!
Krista, thank you! I kept muttering “Don’t freak out, don’t freak out.” My home office now has nice looking curtains and my favorite part is actually how the lining has the front fabric wrapping around. I went with tab-top after originally planning to do a simple rod pocket, and had the confidence to alter my plans accordingly. Your followup showing how your drapes got hung is giving me ideas about my living and family rooms, too. Thank you, and hoping you post more videos of your projects.
Thank you so much for the easy and detailed explanation, It’s so helpful for me and I am actually looking forward to applying all your instructions to saw multiple curtains that I’ve been holding off on making for my home. Could you please make a video on Roman shades when you have time, I’ve watched a few but not as easy as yours to follow and understand, also the videos don’t explained usually where to buy the hardware.😊
Thank you so very much for this most excellent video tutorial! I’m delighted with my drapes. Kind of shocked how well they turned out! Saved $ by DIY & hoping it saves on the heating bill this winter. Many thank you.
Thank you so much! You did an excellent job teaching and I saw some comments say you talked too much but I needed all of the explanations so thank you! I truly appreciate you for sharing and explaining so well!
Total newbie here and yet I have learned so many tips that instantly up my sewing game: constant pressing, micro pleating, etc. That hemming gauge is a game changer for me. My hemmed curtains look so professional (if you can ignore the hem stitches that dont run in a straight line) 😅🤷 Thank you for a great video!
EXCELLENT Video.... Very to the point & direct directions. We are building a new house & I have 11' ceilings and need 4 panels. I am scared to find out what someone would charge to make the custom drapes but yet intimidated on making them myself. I want the lining & the fabric to lay well & not bulky. I am afraid my hems would give it away that they are "homemade". Maybe I will try for a smaller window in the bedroom 1st. Thank you... I WILL be visiting your channel again. I have subscribed!!
This is a GREAT video!! You are a great teacher and very pleasant to listen to. The camera work is great also. I love all the tips you give. And I love the patch in your table with the note from your dad, how sweet 💕 I just got a barely used JUKI from Facebook marketplace. And I am going to make drapes as my first project this weekend! I’m sure you make it look easier than it is, hehe, but this is the most helpful video I have found. Thank you so much!!
This is the best tutorial. Krista West is clear and no nonsense with no blathering on about nothing. Also - those side seams are the ticket - very professional. There is no need for stitches on the outside of the drapes, save for the top and bottom. I’ve seen other videos that instruct to sew the lining onto the sides of the fabric and then you see the stitches. Yuck. The top panel with iron-on interfacing is awesome for using drapery pins in it to simply make soft pleats instead of uptight pinch pleats. She sews like I sew - minimal pins and lots of pressing. Guess all those home ec classes in junior high set me up for life. If you can measure, sew a straight line and not burn things with your iron - you can make lined drapes. Now if I can only get them to be the same length and hang them correctly. Hmmm. Putting up the curtain rod and rings FIRST...
Thank you for this very kind review! Lined drapes are a really easy thing once you know the tricks to those hidden seams. And, they simply transform a room!
@@kristamwest I'm currently making some really nice panels . They're cut and I did a great job on the repeat. Now my new challenge is how to charge. Thanks for the reply🤩
Well, if you've never used a sewing machine, it probably is more difficult! But, if you can sew a straight line, it's just a few more steps to have beautiful lined drapes!
I am making lined curtains, not drapes, but found this video very helpful. I had figured I could accomplish the task by trial and error, but watching this video's step-by-step instructions (I took notes ) cut out the "error" part :)
Thank you so much for this video! I really enjoyed it! Can you please tell me where the sketch for calculating drapery fabric/liner for seam allowances is?
Thank you for your easy-to-follow instructions! I followed your video exactly and my drapery panels turned out great! I ironed between every step (what a difference!) and used the old needle trick. Although it took me much longer than 27 minutes per panel, they look very professional ;)
Nice work. I used the pin s on the header when I made silk panels. Now I like to use a tape that has strings to pull and get a draping. I find that I have to use 11/2 panels to drape a 77” span. All the cutting of lining and matching of drapery fabrics makes me a little muddled. You make it look easy. I do need a bigger table. Mine is only 40” wide and 75 in long. I really enjoyed your work and I do need a little help with the math. I get afraid to cut because I don’t want to make a mistake Thanks again, and I agree that drapery on windows are beautiful when done correctly.
Big thanks Krista. So clear, articulate and BRISK. I love that you don’t drone on like so many UA-camrs.
Yep, not into droning ;)
Absolutely!
Very clear. Wish I had you as my sewing teacher
Dang she's fast! Crisp, beautiful work 😍
Wow. I’ve been making lap quilts but now I want to make warm drapes for my house. This video is a pleasure to watch! Not a moment of wasted time. Beautiful. Thank you.
Yes, drapes are like quilts for your windows! Thanks for watching!

Excellent video! Krista knows what she's doing! This is a highly professional video for the home sewer.
Far and away the best video approaching the task with lots of pro "tips" that make a difference, even if you follow another strategy. Thanks Krista!
Thank you!
Great presentation -- spirited, clear and punctuated with some amusing turns of phrase. What a workshop, so roomy and organized.
Thank you for the great video. This video really shows what professionals with years of experience can do.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the pro tips :)
Like saving a broken needle to push extra fabric under the needle when sewing - great tip!
Thanks for the clear and helpful demonstration.
Yes, that's a great little pro technique you can use with any sewing, not just drapes. Thanks for watching!
Your video is by far the easiest to follow! Thank you
Thank you for watching! Glad you found it helpful!
So glad you found it helpful! Happy sewing!
New subie.
Thanks Krista. Your video is clear and very professionally delivered. Well done . I think I can make my curtains now xxx
Very helpful as l haven’t made lined drapes before!
So helpful! I’m glad to see a pro use the “micropleats”. I do that a lot (I’ve only been sewing a few years) and figured it was a no-no but I’m not good enough to cut perfectly!
This video is fantastic. I had a general idea but you have taught me so many techniques that will help. Thank you so much.
Very good video! I’ve done a lot of sewing projects, but never drapes- you explained perfectly!
Just goes to show how differently curtains are made in one country to another.
just found this and thank God I did. a very comprehensive step by step instructional! i have been looking for days and finally i found yours. its wonderful, detailed and complete!!! thank you and thank you again........ps......i am sewing along with this!!!
you explain so clearly and logically, a great teacher!
thank you! These really aren't hard, but doing the steps in the right order is the key to success!
This makes my day to hear about your successful drapes! Thank you for watching!
I'm learning Roman shades right now and I will do a video once I have mastered the technique 😊
Thank you so very much for this most excellent video tutorial! I’m delighted with my drapes. Kind of shocked how well they turned out! Saved $ by DIY & hoping it saves on the heating bill this winter. Many thank you.
So glad the video helped! Thanks for watching!
She is a master!
Thank you so much! You did an excellent job teaching and I saw some comments say you talked too much but I needed all of the explanations so thank you! I truly appreciate you for sharing and explaining so well!
Such a great tutorial! Thank you!❤
You did such a beautiful job. You have saved me thousands by helping me making my own drapes for my home 💕
You're so welcome! Beautiful drapes really aren't difficult and it adds so much to your home :)
@@kristamwestyou make is look easy!!!!. Smart idea about doing micro pleats
Genuinely you are a wonderful teacher I'm very thankful to have come across your tutorial
Thank you! It really makes my day when people learn just those few "pro" tricks :)
This is Great! You should have more likes. I love it. Wonderful job explaining.
Love the message from your dad! Great video. So clear and helpful. Thanks
Yes, I love seeing that every day when I'm working! Glad you enjoyed the video--happy sewing!
Wow!
My new favorite channel!
Love your style, great information
You know your stuff!
Thanks for watching!
I cannot stress enough about precise measuring!!!
Pattern repeat can be a challenge when ordering fabric and cutting.I like for my drapes to match.
Your tutorial is clear and easy to follow.
Thanks
Yes, it can be challenging but learning how to do it makes for really professional drapes😊
@@kristamwest I'm currently making some really nice panels .
They're cut and I did a great job on the repeat.
Now my new challenge is how to charge.
Thanks for the reply🤩
You are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us! 🥰
Fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thank you thank you thank you! This was so incredibly helpful. My curtains look custom made instead of DIY.
Good for you! It's really quite easy to get very professional results!
Video is good but you neglected to give information on the correct way to measure both the lining and drapery fabric.
That info is in the lined drapery chart with link in description.
Love your techniques...great video! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial! I love the parting comment “...and very easy to do “ 😁😍. ... maybe not for everyone!
So glad to hear that! It's really a pretty simple process if you know the order of operations :)
I like how you just blasted through this project👌🏾
Well, I logged my 10000 hours at the sewing machine quite awhile ago, so it does help make it look easy :)
Thank you so much for this video! I really enjoyed it! Can you please tell me where the sketch for calculating drapery fabric/liner for seam allowances is?
I realize I'm kind of randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Micah Maxton i would suggest Flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Shawn Keenan yea, have been using FlixZone for since march myself :)
@Shawn Keenan Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I appreciate it !!
@Micah Maxton happy to help :)
Thank you for your easy-to-follow instructions! I followed your video exactly and my drapery panels turned out great! I ironed between every step (what a difference!) and used the old needle trick. Although it took me much longer than 27 minutes per panel, they look very professional ;)
Brilliant! Your instructions are quick and straightforward. Thank you so much! Can you please film 🎥 🙏 in landscape? ✌💜😚
Superb presentation
I love this video!! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise 🥰
