Sony Xperia 1 VI Review | Big Changes!

- Reviewing the Sony Xperia 1 VI, a big departure from the regular flagship smartphone design including a new display and camera app updates. The Mark 6 is great for creators, gaming etc, but beware - the Sony Xperia 1 VI is also expensive, so better get saving!
I've been testing this phone for over a week and here's my thoughts so far. Check out my other smartphone reviews here on Tech Spurt!
Now, while Sony often slaps multiple camera apps onto its premium handsets, the Xperia 1 VI makes do with a single, more standard offering. You still get some photo pro controls, but no video pro setup just yet. All the same, I like the streamlined setup and the Mark 6 can happily snap great looking portrait photos with minimal processing.
The Sony Xperia 1 VI is cracking for gaming as usual. That Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is a powerhouse and this phone doesn't heat up even with lots of Genshin Impact action. Battery life is also among the best of any mobile I've tested in 2024. You can get a whole weekend of action out of the Xperia 1 VI if you don't go too crazy.
So that's what I think of this flagship after a week of personal use. Yeah, some of that Sony identity has been stripped away, but I enjoyed using the Xperia 1 VI as my blower. Let us know your own review below!

I sold my s23 and iphone 15 for this Xperia 1 VI. Well, i didn't have any regrets... no buts and whys.. Everythinf is smooth. Finally, all my photos are natural.. No AI and everything. I can play Call of duty while plugged in without damaging my battery!! Kudos to the master of electronics, Sony!!!!! Way to go!!
Xperia 1 VI is a masterpiece of a camera, however there is a problem...
It needs at least AI to sharpen the photos on the telephoto lens only as 3.5x+ zoom looks incredibly blurry in comparison to other flagships, even S24 ultra at 3X looks better and that says alot as the 3x sensor on s24 ultra is junk.
These are the right bezels for a phone. Functional bezels. That hold cameras and speakers and provide an uninterrupted display. Unlike the god awful s23 fe and pixel 8a that are made to look cheap and shouldn't be defended because "they arent flagships"
How dare the $500 phone act like they arent flagships 😤
@@everydaydose7779 how dare a $200 Chinese phone have thin bezels 😤
@@Hikari_to_Yuri I agree with both your comments.
lol that pixel 8a is atrocious.
@@Hikari_to_Yuri have you seen those god awful Hyper tiddie fuck OS on them?
I moved from my iPhone 15 pro max to Sony Xperia 1 mark VI since 20240610 and I m not looking back! 1 huge thing for me is that it is missing a REAL pro video app. The included one is VERY good for photos but NOT so good for video. Can't wait for the promised new software with the up and coming Android update! Sony you got me hooked!
Bro just casually dropped the biggest plot twist in cinematic history!
I was wondering if I should add a spoiler alert, then I remembered that movie's 25 years old 😅
@@TechSpurt it's their fault for not seeing it 😂
@@TechSpurt Not just the Google Pixel and iPhone doesn't used memory cards. But the Samsung galaxy S-series too, you Samsung fan boy. 😅
Doesn't he also not make it in Armageddon?@@TechSpurt
That Duracell bunny joke made my day xD
Great review Chris, thanks a bunch!
Ta!
Same here had me in stitches
The Scarlet red version of this phone is a real beauty! 😍🥰♥️
Underrated color fr 🔥
I wish Sony could have added some black accent to it, like the camera bump. It would for sure make the red looks stunning.
People always blame Sony for their 'old school' design. This was out of context. This is Sony signature design. Even Samsung Ultra series has Sony signature design since Note 10.
Thick bezels? Sony always make it that way for their flagship devices because those eyesick bezels that people hates actually was front speaker. Not one, but both up and bottom screen. When we see this design, we already know it was Sony all the way. Sony always with their own unique way not following other company copy and paste design for their product. If these people have a problem, go make your own devices or just keep dreaming for their own dreaming smartphone
Yeah ..if iphone is the ferrari then sony is the roll royce
Mine got delayed 2 weeks, glad to watch this in the meantime!
Argh, bloody post!
Thanks for the great video! Not many UA-camrs seem to be reviewing Sony phones these days so it's good to be able to watch at least one video on it.
I swapped my Pixel 8 Pro for this and I do not regret it. Less AI photo-nobbing for sure, but more importantly it doesn't slip out of my hands at every given opportunity. I was glad to get away from the under screen finger print reader, but it took me a little while to get used to the Xperia reader; It just happens to be exactly where I grab the phone in my pocket, so it would get unlocked when putting it away or getting it out. The former being the worst of the two. Happily however, there is a setting to change the reader so it only reads if the button itself is depressed, so that fixed the issue for me.
The phone may be £200 more expensive, but for some reason, my O2 switch up came in at the exact same price as my 8 pro, so I lost nothing by changing. :/
Edit > One thing that really annoys me is that for the audio processing, you can't set "Dolby" for video and "No effect" for audio, even in the custom setting. I don't want DSEE Ultimate for music, because my music is already Hi-Res.
How is pic quality compared to 8 pro and shutter speed to capture moving objects
@@MOTHIATMAN I'd say the picture quality is about equal on auto, but more natural looking. The pixel does more to make your photos look appealing - which was one of the reasons I wanted the 1 VI. I just want it to reflect what I'm seeing.
The Xperia still does do some stuff to enhance though.
The pro mode is where its at really.
In Regards to shutter speed, you can go up 1/8000 which is pretty fast :D but the iso tops out at 6400 (in shutter priority mode) so you'll need a well lit environment. In short, day time it's great, dusk onwards, you'll struggle
I had this problem with an earlier Xperia, I was constantly unlocking it again as I shoved it into my trousers. Learned to adjust my grip eventually! But yeah, that 'press to unlock' option is a great addition
@@TechSpurt I think for me, it's exacerbated by the fact I slot it away top down. It's always my index finger touching it.
I do find however that often if I don't unlock first time, with the depress option enabled, when I retry, I unlock it and then immediately turn off the screen in one go.
Adjustment period 🤣
I once used Xperia x and loved it. The display, screen size, camera and the UI was really unique. It seems after a long time a good Xperia is out again . I'm hoping to buy it but sadly
it is not available In retail in Australia. 😢
Having kept my trustee Samsung S9 for more years than i really should have done, it was high time for a change! As an audio buff i was considering the MIAD01 with its posh balanced headphone jack etc but aside from that, well it's not so great and really is a one trick pony so i kept looking...
Then stumbled on this mk vi when looking at my o2 upgrade options 😅
Ok it is eye wateringly expensive but hey if I'm gonna keep this one for as long as the S9 then... Yeah, sure I can justify it *cough*
Loving it so far! The best camera in the world is the one you happen to have in your pocket etc etc and this one does not disappoint. Coupled with great sound from both BT and the jack, snappy performance, a slick design, and gaming performance that makes my kiddies jealous, i couldn't be happier!
Anyway nice review and keep up the good work fella 👍
I've had it for 14 days and I love it❤
finally! video I was waiting for!

Mine is arriving next week. Can't wait for it. My 1 II is nearing retirement.
Love you too Uncle Spurt
Great to see Sony grow I have been it's fan for years although I can't buy their latest flagships but I am still using their experia 5
Hello Chris, great review as always. Can you please help me to decide which phone to get. I have Huawei P40 pro, but want to upgrade. I usualy use mobile for browsing, cam, and social medias, so I was thinking about getting Iphone 15, Google pixel 8 pro or Samsung S23 ultra. Would you choose one of those 3, or recomand me another phone to buy, thanx in advance.
UNCLE SPURT IS GOING AROUND WITH MODELS NOW !!
WE ARE HAPPY FOR YOU
I'm in Japan and thinking of getting that red color edition. Looks good.
Thanks for the review. Although the bezels are there, at least it's not a hole punch, which is not bad. However, I like Sony's approach to this, and makes it look very clean. What's interesting is that they didn't announce an Xperia 5 VI.
Great video 💪 this phone vs Xiaomi 14 ultra?
Thanks ❤😀
Yes!
I get the feeling from all your Xperia content that you genuinely like how Sony do stuff differently to others, something I share. I was highly sceptical when I saw that the 1 VI would go to a 19.5:9 FHD+ display and I'm honestly still on the fence about whether I like that decision. The battery life is a truly incredible stat and if the lower res display is why, then that's a near-perfect compromise, but I would've preferred if Sony kept the 21:9 format with the 1096p resolution which all Xperia 1 devices have defaulted to when not showing 4K content, to keep the iconic shape of these phones the same.
I've always liked the sony designs and now I've had a Moto Razor for a bit I've decided I'm not fussed about a folding screen so my go for a bar phone again next time. This will definitely be on my radar.
What a great camera with a great phone!
Great review, is it worth to move from Xperia V to this?
Hi may i ask if you're gonna review Xperia 10 vi as well? Thanks!
I've had mine since 6th June. Tbh not that fussed about face unlock as I never used it on my Oppo Find X2 Pro before I switched back to using Xperia I phones.
I liked the camera apps on the Xperia I V, so this is taking some time getting used to.
The tele macro is quite nice and the main camera takes very good pictures.
The battery is absolutely brilliant though.
TWO DAY BATTERY yes please :D longer range and macro!! I wont upgrade my 1V just yet as i want the zoom sensor to be updated to the new two layer transistor pixel tech
Won't happen.
I just figured out why there is no Pro mode at launch with a promise of some kind of update later... They thought what would Tesla do as they are popular (where before it was "what would Apple do" - when they used to say what would Sony do) and so they realised Tesla launches with promises for it's features to come sometime in the future via an OTA drop... genius!

perflat display very nice
Watching from my smooth as jelly white Xperia 1 ii.
What phone is your favorite I have had one plus for years but fancy a change now . My one plus 10 pro is not very good on battery I get 3 hours sot.
I'm someone who still rocks a Galaxy S20+ and will be in the market for a new phone in the near future. I have zero interest any of the current Samsung Galaxy phones or iPhones whatsoever since they all don't have expandable storage.
Would the Xperia 1 VI or Xperia 5 V be a good upgrade from my Galaxy S20+?
using an s20fe myself and I would say if your battery still runs fine then dont upgrade.
Yes it'll definitely be better in many ways (much better if you got Exynos). Better responsiveness, camera and pretty much all hardware. But you might miss some features from OneUI like shifting the back button to the right side, Knox, and Samsung being a bitch by not allowing their apps to sync to non-Samsung devices.
@@pixels_per_inch I use swipe controls for that type of thing, so I guess that won't be a problem unless Sony doesn't provide swip controls. UI change won't be a problem for me, because I would say I use maybe 30% of the features on my 20+, if I'm honest.
SD Card & 3.5mm headphone jack support, together, on a single, non budget phone, in 2024!
Miracles do happen....at a price.
This will be my next phone, once the price has dropped to sub £1k, in 6mths or so as my Samsung A90 5G is now set for a (long overdue) retirement.
Overdue for retirement.? I wonder what you'd make of my LG G6. Other than data space issues, by all accounts it still performs magnificently. 😆
The reason Sony does not introduce facial recognition is security issues. Unlike in the past, biometric authentication is now used in a wide range of important situations, such as monetary transactions and personal ID authentication. If you want to ensure security equal to or higher than fingerprint authentication with facial recognition, you need an advanced system like the iPhone. Therefore, although it is not well known, the current facial recognition of many Android manufacturers only uses the front camera for flat authentication, so the security performance is low. Introducing a system like the iPhone would be costly and would affect the design. And the fact is that fingerprint authentication alone is currently comfortable to use. Sony does not want to introduce facial recognition with insufficient security performance for the safety of consumers.
Seems like a lot of people here aren't fussed about it anyway.

This lack of awareness of the dangers is alarming.
For my preference....not punch hole...side finger print reader....front facing speakers and headphone jack ....this is the best phone since htc one m7....call me old fashioned but i miss a led notification light ...this phone fabulous battery life ...good sound ...much better aspect ratio and plenty sharp enough screen ...the only minus really the zoom isnt the best ... macro camera is insane though ....and no heating up ....not had any issues at all to this point ..for me personally ... well done sony ....
So far it has been a big upgrade on my mark IV... Not overheating, better battery!
Had mine for two weeks. Superb. Brilliant battery and the speakers are nice.
Disappointed with the rubbish unboxing experience and have had those glitches with UA-cam.
Nice!

Maybe i am the last person that still using XZ Premium as a daily phone, still working perfectly and i am still enjoying wired headphone or in earbud jack for calling, listening music and watching movies. I kinda like the mark v1 than mark v because of boxy form of mark vi rather than rectangular form of mark v. This will be my next phone
5:31 Wow man was that RRR movie?? Glad to know u watch South Indian Movies hahaha.. love the review!
FINALLY! The almighty Xperia 1 VI👑 is on this channel!
It was about time!
Ha, sorry for the delay, only just got my sample last week - better late than never, I guess? 😁
First comment!!!! Wooo. 🥳
Amazing
This is the first Mark I i will get (at a discount though, retail price right now is beyond my interest)
It hit all the right notes this time for me, primary the battery life, and second the aspect ratio (i just dont like the long remote control style form factor)
i'd rather appreciate the separate photo pro and video pro app or maybe make a separate app with both photo pro and video pro features in it beside the stock camera because thats what makes sony phone defferent and makes it special.
everyone should try the phone and I believe that everyone will be surprised how good it is...just WoW!!
Is it still $1500??
The Xperia 1 VI is a well rounded device. I'm waiting on the Xperia 5 VI in order to make a decision, before upgrading.
there wont be a 5 vi
It's the only premium phone with an sd card and headphone jack, which basically places it in it's own category
My next phone is a sony for sure! Just got my iphone 15 a few months back 😢
How does it compare to the Xperia 1 V in performance and battery life?
Micro SD and audiojack would be fantastic with my Tidal library, I already have a 1tb one I got for 40$
Side-key-fingerprint instead of searching for where on the screen to touch 😍😍
I might very well move from the Samsung Ultra, would miss Dex and the S-Pen though
Any source provider who can tell me what anime he's playing during the Display & Audio segment?
Sony Iperia VI is looking hot and awesome 😎
This is so far the only phone Ive found that has everything I want. 3.5mm audio, sd card, no camera hole/notch, detailed pro camera app, great battery life. Only cons are the high price, and somewhat short software support life.
I am very impressed with the battery of the mark vi. The official cover is damn hard to remove. I gave up in the end. My photos have come out very well so far. Wondering if Sony will be the first to change to perovskite camera sensor. As that looks interesting. I have wanted to try the pixel phones, just don't like the design. Samsung phones don't like them as they have their overlay on top of Android. Sony phones seem so more logical everything it the right place. That could be just because i have ha so many so use to everything. The older you get you seem to stick with what you know and if something is done differently then it seems too hard to have to learn. I did have one of my photos used for a background on a certificate people printed out. The guy that took his DSLR camera and thinks he was a amateur photographer got beaten by a Sony phone about 12 years ago. My photos catch the eye of everyone who walks by and sees my desktop background.
So, the front camera does have autofocus? Hope so. I'd heard on other reviews it was missing.
Im now looking for a new phone.. either this, s24 or pixel 8?? I cant decide
Upgrading from a samsung a52s so it should be a bug improvement
I didn't expect less from the cameras, I knew that they had to be good because we're dealing with Sony here. And trust me they nailed that camera. Vibrant and barely any processing on images shot
where can i find the wallpapers you use?
This is what I want to know too!
Same
I still have the mk III but the VI specks look sick! I may get the V if the price is nice 👍
I had the 5 IV, and I did like it a lot. But there was compromises for sure. The finger print reader stopped working for no reason. But the biggest complaint was the Bluetooth connection. I just couldn’t have it in a pocket. And I tried several headphones. So if I wanted to listen to anything I had to carry it around. That got old really fast, and I hope they improved it.
0:36 GIGA BASED KITA WALLPAPER
Tbh these old fashioned bezels are much better. I mean more display is good through Dynamic Island or hole punches, but the old ways are better.
I want this phone. I'm always on the verge of dropping my S__ Ultra for the Xperia 1.
The rumors of the design and naming comventions changes coming for 2025 keep me from jumping now.
Have been a great fan of urs bro.. they dont sell the Sony Brand anymore in Asia Pac / Middle East so had to opt for a Xiaomi 14 Ultra.. have always loved Sony but they have kept the sensors as the last ones and smaller ones too and the video graphy in the dark light is downright poor. Xiaomi has an issue with the battery though and the camera kit has to improve the quality of the focus, when attached. Can you do a comparison pls? The good thing that Xiaomi has, with its LEICA partnership, that it is going for the Natural looks only, like Sony.
Hey, how can I increase app icon size?? I tried increasing display and font buy it keeps making fonts larger not the I icons 😢
Just curious but why are those Chinese New Year laterns still up?
I want Google, Samsung and Apple to take the continuous optical zoom feature from this phone. That would be a true game changer. 3.5x to 7.1x is great. Samsung should have done this, instead of replacing the 10x with 5x. They should have just made the 3x lens a 3x-5/7x continuous optical zoom and then keep the 10x
From where you get these anime wallpapers ??

Swopped s24 ultra, not a good move. Love the codecs and 3.5jack, main reasons I swopped but buggy and seems to struggle holding a WiFi signal, never had that issue before 🤷🏼♀️
Whill you review the oppo reno 12 pro?!!!!! It will be my next phone!!!!!
As long as they got the 3.5mm headphone jack I am happy and will always buy Sony.
Finally a more practical ratio, that was my biggest gripe.
Another entertaining review, you are amazing. I must say they are some of the worse pictures you have even taken though. Was much drink consumed beforehand? 🤣
And yet said same people banging on about bezels think notches and cut outs in their screens are FABULOUS! Talk about lack of self awareness....

Hey, what's your opinion about choosing between Xperia 1 VI and S24 Ultra?
S24 way better
No...had both sold the S24U@@ARJUN-SS
Xperia and Galaxy have completely opposite development philosophies. For example, Sony takes advantage of its strengths as a camera manufacturer to develop cameras that have natural coloring and AF performance that is strong for shooting moving objects, and is a development direction that satisfies a wide range of creative thinkers from amateurs to professionals, while Galaxy is a company that has developed as a smartphone manufacturer, so it places importance on the impact of the first glance and has AI process it in a flashy way to attract attention on social media. Therefore, as a simple image for social media, it looks flashy and gorgeous, but when viewed as a photograph, which is an art that captures reality, it is honestly useless due to the false colors and processing. Also, as for the display, Sony is a company that values various content, so it does not drill holes in the display, and as an audio manufacturer, it leaves the top and bottom bezels for the sound quality of the front stereo speakers, but Galaxy places more importance on the design as a bezel-less smartphone. I do not intend to say which is right, but the culture of the countries that gave birth to these manufacturers is also completely opposite. For example, Sony is a Japanese manufacturer, but Japan values nature. Therefore, there is a culture that avoids making more modifications than necessary. In contrast, Korea has a culture that says that it is fine as long as it is beautiful, even if it is fake. The fact that Korea is one of the world's leading plastic surgery countries is a good reflection of that culture. It's interesting to see how similar their camera development ideas are. Therefore, Xperia and Galaxy are not competitors, but the more you get to know them, the more different they are, so it's clear to see which one suits you best.

I hope the camera is better than the Pixels A series last time there was a blind test by a certain UA-camr with multiple smartphones it totally beat the overpriced Xperia 1 flagship.
They were probably comparing auto mode, which Sony never had. This being their first attempt, I expect it's better but not amazing.

Sony always had good battery management.
My 4 year old Xperia 1 ii struggles to last a full day with any more than about 4 hours of screen on time and it charges quicker than it used (which is weird)
