This is exactly what I am experiencing right now. Extremely painful and miserable 24 hours a day. Have an appointment on 10/24 with neurosurgeon. Please pray for me as I need to be approved for this procedure so bad. Prayers for you all! 🙏🏼
I had an antera and postera laminectomy in 2021 to repair a previous neck operation in 2012, but in this 8 hour operation I had a mild stroke which affected my hands, so before you have this operation have your major arteries checked for plaque that my move into your brain and cause a stroke
I had c1-c6 done in 2009 after a accident at work. Strangely my neck has never hurt or given me any discomfort. Legs don’t work too well, left side of my torso is bonkers with numbness and hyper sensitivity at the same time. But the neck was always fine.
Thanks for the good way of putting that. Hilarious! I had mine done in 2009 and I was fortunate to have a great surgeon, truth told me of the dangers .
Wow that's awesome to know that so much more important information and it all scars the hell out of me I had suffer almost 7 years with this problem nothing is is working it's just keep me high but once it wear off it's back to the started with the dam pain I'm having surgery next month but I will not have them fusion so less pain is better than no pain good luck to you all and God Bless
Hi Rosalind, did you have your surgery, how did it go? I've a trapped nerve for 4 weeks now between c5 and c6. I really don't want surgery and hoping physio helps
I did much research. Fusion is old school and can cause Adjacent Level wear out the next disc from added friction. Check if an artificial disc is suitable by a surgeon who has done thousands of them. Like Rush Chicago Dr Dutche. I went to Barcelona Spine for double level Cervical and single level lumbar. More choices. Immediate results.
One of my mentors... best friend... brother... will be doing this surgery within the next 15 hours. He is in the prep room right now. He's very nervous no matter how tough he acts to us. Haha. He will be all right he is in good hands but Please pray for my brother Lam Tran Pham. He is a warrior with a humble heart "live by the sword, die by the sword" ~
I have bulged in c5 and c6 disk. My shoulder and hands are paining and I have some shock effect in my hand. Now I'm consulting with the therapist. But still I have pain when I was riding a two wheeler. Is any surgery is needed to sort it out, or with the tablet and physical exercise can we sort it out. Kindly let me know. Thanks
What they don't show here is the cutting of the multifitus muscles and ligament of flavum. I had it done in 1996 at 42. I had total effacement of the chord at c5/c6. Also pain down the arm and shoulder. That later was fixed but I still have localized burning and pressure with headaches in the area of surgery. In 2014 I had an ACDF to clean up severe stenosis at C5-C7. Pulling and Pushing cause my Scaline muscles to stiffen and burn.Good luck to those having this but in some cases like mine it i necessary to let the spinal fluid flow properly. Disk replacement could be a better option I've read not fusion.
why not use stainless protection plate or coating, or 0.2 stainless protective plate , why let bone removed and nothing hardness to form protection on exposure part.
I had my neck fusion “c1-c6” in August 2010 and every since my surgery I been coughing. I went from coughing every time I eat food or drink water to all the time no matter of what. It’s driving me crazy because I had all types of tested done “ lung scope, stomach scope, hepatitis, TB, AIDS, sinus cat scan and Colonoscopy tested they all came back negative”! I’m calling my doctor on Monday to schedule an appointment to remove my metal plate from my neck. Have anybody had this problem?
To Mr. Taylor: Consulting with a neurosurgeon that specializes in spine disorders and reconstruction may be a consideration. This may require a big city travel. If you are out west I would consider Dr John Hsiang at Swedish Spine in the Seattle area. In Chicago at Rush Dr. Harel Duetsch. My point is many of these fusions are done by orthopedic surgeons. Your problem is neurological. Was this fusion required from an accident? So rare to see that many levels. The other point is if C7 needs to be fused someday, I would consider an artificial disc, if it can be done properly. When you fuse discs, the adjoining discs get more friction and pressure. The condition is known as Adjacent Segment Degeneration (ASD). I went to Barcelona Spine Center Dr. Clavel for a double level neck and the trend is to use the ESP disc not available in the US. ESP is made in France and is considered the first best, and the next best is the Spinal Kinetics M6. It may be wise to read up on ASD and artificial discs. Again, a specialist is required who has performed thousands of successful implants- the two Drs above and adding orthopedic Dr. Michael Janneson in Denver ( has Good UA-cam’s as well). I prefer neurosurgeon who has performed thousands of successful implants with only a very rare failure. Always ask.
In in KY, Dr Harel Duetsch at Rush Chicago might be worth checking with. He is a neurosurgeon that specializes in disc replacement with artificial, but he may also help you or know if a specialist at Rush. Rush is a premier leading hospital.
Ohh my! I had the C3 thru C7 laminectomy procedure done May of 2014 and to date (Aug 2020) although I do suffer from 'low' level pain (on a scale 1 to 10 my pain is between 2 and 3) I do have approx. 90% mobility and suffer no other effects EXCEPT I (prior to seeing this video!) no longer fear a spinal cord injury that could result in paralysis, a fear prior to surgery I did have. This video has shared with we the viewer something I did not know however, when the spinous process and laminae were removed, the screws and rods placed those elements of the vertebra were not replaced with bone or something else leaving the spinal cord UNPROTECTED? This kinda scares me. Does the body replace those elements that will protect the spinal cord and those lateral nerves by itself?
That sounds like a radical procedure. I would tend to think the trauma would be extremely painful and you could goodbye to flexibility. Why aren't there stem cell therapies that are effective in repairing the cartilage loss of the intervertebral discs instead? I would rather have experimental stem cell therapy than fused vertebrae any day.
I had a cervical laminectomy and fusion. It was EXTREMELY PAINFUL and was in the hospital for 8 days (NOT 2-3 days as the video claims). The WORST PAIN I have ever experienced, EVER. And to this day, I have awful headaches and painful muscle spasms, cramping and tightness in my neck, chest, shoulders, arms, scapula, back, calves, all the way to my feet. Overall, I am much weaker since the surgery 3 years ago, (Nov 2015) but more so on my left side, where I am left with a slight tremor as well. I have no feeling in my hands, and my balance is poor. In 2014, I had an ACDF.
@@anitaseifer6800 Do you mind me asking how you are doing now? I read spinal leaks are one of many common complications of this surgery. Spinal leaks can induce extreme pain in head and spine, but I am sure many of the other potential complications can too. Just a suggestion, in case this could be an issue for you. Leaks are often treatable but many doctors have poor knowledge about effectively treating them. Wish you the best.
Oh by the way I had gotten a c tube and it had so much pain my nurses set up a morphine pump connected to a button that I could press when I felt pain and it works
This seems to sugarcoat the recovery period, at least from what I experienced in 2015. I was under heavy sedation for a week after the surgery; I don't even remember being in the hospital for that week. I then went into rehab for another week to practice walking again. It turned out very well, however.
What is the difference between a laminectomy and laminotomy? Which is preferable for cervical stenosis? Is fusion usually done along with a laminectomy? How long does recovery take for someone to be able to return to daily activities?
The nerves (specifically the neurons) in your spinal cord are like a circuit. The part that sends the signal down each neuron (the axon) is like the wires on the circuit. Once you cut the wires, your circuit is basically gone and can’t be “sewn back” together because neurons are what we call “terminally differentiated”, meaning that they don’t divide or grow back. So, once you damage those neurons, that’s pretty much it.

It's bad enough to fuse the vertebrae in your lower back. Why would ANYONE want to fuse their neck bones? If they're fused, you'll have to turn your body in order to turn your head. You'll have to bend your body at your waist in order to look down, and you'll never be able to look directly at your shoulders, belly or chest again. Furthermore, the surgery is likely to be successful only for a few years until the screws and metals start to get loose and hurt you badly and you'll need surgery again. Sometimes the surgery is a complete failure and the patients necks never heal and they have to spend the rest of their lives on pain meds and live in pain.
but people live for years and years with pain and medication...and that too has MAJOR effects on ones health...think of it as you would a knee....you would just have to learn to make the movements happen...yes...I agree...it would be frustrating and hard to re-learn things...but...has to be better then continuous pain and foggy groggy days of drugs and not being able to do hardly anything...other the walk...sleep and eat....trust me...have been dealing with this for far to many years...

TheGeckoNinja I agree, this is a quick symptom directed remedy. What we need to develop is a cell regeneration technology that would actually repair the damaged discs and the nerves would then be able to heal naturally. This cutting away of bone and adding metal and screws just sounds too uncomfortable, and the root of the problem still exists, or worsens.
Frank Carpi i would love that we have regeneration technology but based on big business they will never develop it because if we could auto heal lost or damaged tissue or bone pharmaceutical companies would go out of business

Massage therapy doesn’t fix an issue like this. In fact, it’s likely to make it worse... The last thing you want to do is to add additional pressure to the spine and the spinal cord that already has excess pressure due to a herniated disc or other causes that were mentioned. A laminotomy removes part of the lamina to relieve pressure, and a laminectomy removes the lamina completely
