    Additional details and recommendations:
The danger of updating your BIOS is that if the process is interrupted, for example, with a power outage, it will render the entire motherboard unusable. The only way to fix a corrupted BIOS is to remove the BIOS physical chip and solder a new one.
Tips: There is nothing intrinsically wrong with updating your BIOS. Don't be afraid to do it. At times, it's actually necessary. But it's a good idea to have a failsafe in place. I recommend using a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)/backup battery to allow the process to finish even if you have a power outage.

No, you can buy a programmer for 5 bucks and burn new bios directly to the chip

    • @gagarin777
      @gagarin777 3 місяці тому +1

Not really. There are fail safes in place. BIOS'es are modular and the init part usually is not touched during flashing. If an issue occurs you will get a screen saying BIOS checksum ERROR and to provide a media with the BIOS file to reflash. Now the tricky part is that some really old platform require the floppy disc or will read USB device but only in special file format that never is stated anywhere (for me I discovered that only old SD card formatted in DVB-T tuner works the magic). BIOS file also has to be specially named for this recovery to work (like bios.bin) for example but it depends on the BIOS chip manufacturer. Then you also have mobo's with dual or even triple BIOS and BIOS selector switches.

On newer motherboards, I mean like past 2016, you can download and install latest version of bios from the bios. No need to google your motherboard, just go to the bios, go to update, click Update via internet, and if you have ethernet cable plugged in, it will download latest bios, and update automatically.

it is kinda weird yes. I have an old Optiplex 790 from a system-pool and another PC with a top of the line Asus ROG-Strix Mainboard. HOWEVER the Optiplex-MB can be updated with a simple Download from Dell website while the high end Rog Strix motherboard needs a USB-Stick with correctly installed files on it in the correct usb-slot of the mb. It is so overcomplicated even though it's a high end mb.

It's not rly that weird. Let's take an AMD rdy Asus b550. That board has to support like 30 different cpus and an endless configuration of other parts. Integrated systems that IT might work on are streamlined and ready for business output so the updates are probably alot more tailored to the system

A restart would fix this temporarily, but i eventually had enough and updated the bios. When it booted into windows after the update the power button didn’t work. Im so sick of ppl saying this garbage. This isn't true. Bios updates often bring rly good quality changes over time to help efficiency, lifespan of the board, heat, and more. If you've been running a pc for a year or 2 and never updated your bios, you're almost ALWAYS going to see some type of benefit in doing so and the risk of bricking your system is almost 0 outside user error. This bullshit started a while back because you had youtubers all scared to tell ppl to update their stuff out of w.e perceived liability they may have, hence Zachs disclaimer.
I honestly can't think of a reason NOT to update your bios unless the update brings literally nothing to your system at all, like processor support or something that doesn't pertain to your parts.

this is the one thing that always case anxiety to essentially all PC owners, last i updated mine, i was a mere few seconds away from getting my mobo bricked by a unannounced power outage when the power company shut down the power to swap one of my neighbors aging and faulty power station(?) think thats the right word for it, its not the fuse box but the other one you normally/should find next to it, i almost quiet literally where shitting bricks when power went out just as the bios finnished updating, at the time it happened, i would not have been able to afford a new one.

Usually some motherboards have a 2nd bios chip as backup it reverts back to the older version if it fails, yet i don't know if that's true but it did happen to me once

please read every update on bios download page. sometime you have to update to a certain bios version and drivers before latest version.

Even though it’s dangerous, windows 11 always FORCES a BIOS/UEFI update, (technically, if you disable the “firmware” in the device manager windows can’t update it) but if you have a battery (for power surges or you’re using a laptop or other handheld) you shouldn’t worry as much, just worry about random malfunctions that cause your PC to power off

Just a reminder: MSI motherboards (and some others too maybe) will erase all data after the BIOS update, so make sure to create a backup. I didn't know and it was painful setting up my fan curves again.

Ideally you should update you BIOS at noon on a clear day, alone with the door locked, and with absolute certainty that neither your internet or your power is going to be shutoff for any reason.

I was going to reset Windows, and decided to update my BIOS first. The process went okay, but I GOT LOCKED OUT OF WINDOWS because the flash deleted the login information on the TPM chip. No warning about this in my motherboard manual or on the MSI website where I got the BIOS file. I figured it out...thanks to UA-cam...and it actually fixed my problem, so no Windows reset was necessary. So there's one more hazard when you updte your BIOS.

There is a solution to recovery the MB after a failed BIOS update (like turning off the PC when you update the BIOS). Yes, is not for everyone this solution, but you can use an external programmer like CH341 programmer with 3.3V voltage output for chip and you can connect directly on the BIOS chip and rewrite the flash chip. I've already did it on Supermicro Xeon MB.
Other MB they have a recovery solution. Gigabyte is one of the MB that offers such feature.
