I had a Yamaha Mt 09 and loved the bike. I drove my brothers Z900 and fell in love with the bike the Z900 is a more comfortable bike for long distance but the Yamaha is a better performance bike on twisted road's and city driving.
Overall comfort the Kawasaki Z900 wins all-day everyday. I commute 207 miles a day round trip for work. I had the MT 09 for a year and put 23500 miles on it.
After driving my brothers I bought the Kawasaki Z900 I have around 8000 miles on it and can tell you that from the stand point of a 50 year old the Kawasaki is a more comfortable bike.
I hope this helps you make an informed decision.
Thanks a lot !
Why is your commute so long
I looked at both bikes today and still couldn’t decide which one to buy, i think the z900 us going to be my next bike
I might be commuting 140 miles round trip as well and was looking at the mt-09. I need to sit on a Z900 and see how it feels. Thanks for your input!
what is your bodytype, how tall, how heavy?
Having ridden my friend's Z900 and owning a '17 FZ09 I gotta say they are two totally different bikes. The Z900 is a buttery smooth naked sportbike, the FZ/MT09 is a rougher giant supermoto. If you want a great handling, comfortable, long-distance capable, easy ride, get the Z. If you want a hooligan machine to play around on AND be a great commuter, get the 09.
Is the z900 not a good commuter?
@@dantheman4861 Its a GREAT commuter! But little hard on higher speeds cause NO windshield at all! Lol TORQUE is insane ! Too bad its 10 degrees and SNOW! Lol 😰😀
@@outdoors-gs9td do you think an aftermarket windscreen would help or not so much?
@@dantheman4861 YES! lol i havent looked yet and not sure if have one too add? if so and still looks fierce ill get one! lol its very intimidating at 70 even. lol
@@dantheman4861 the z is a great commuter as well but in this context I meant that the MT09 would be better/more fun when getting around town because of the way the triple makes power and the seating position. The kawi is between the mt09 and a supersport in seating position and just isn't that great for stop and go riding but would be great for long distances, in my opinion of course.
I can attest its been 7months of owning a Zr900 and it meets every expectation and more for the price it's insane how much value and enjoyment it offers
Owned both and love both. Totally different bikes and great in their own ways.Got the z900 performance sounds great with the Akrapovic exhaust.
I know this is an old post, but I gotta ask: did you use a dB killer? I just bought my z900 with a full akra exhaust and it is incredibly loud. I was curious if a dB killer would also kill the great sound.
I haven’t ridden the Z900 but I really love my MT-09. Loads of torque, feels very lightweight and nimble, comfortable too.
Me too... Plus super awesome easy to ride than Honda 400 Super4. I really love this Mt-09 before I was riding CBR1000rr, R1, St13, Hayabusa and lot more but this Mt-09 is no regret to having it
Those nakeds are very street friendly and comfortable while still having the fun punchy engines!
@@AdamAdam-qq2ev Really? I had a 2017 mt09 and I hated it the throttle is too snappy for city riding and the suspension is too soft and crapy for aggressive riding let's not mention the bike is highly unstable and wobbles under hard acceleration. It's was a fun bike to ride at first but it got old very fast and I started to notice the problems which were bothering me especially after riding higher quality bikes. I personally think z900 is better at what it's trying to do but it's kinda boring bike to ride compared to mt09.
Z900 feels like you sit in the bike instead of feeling like a dirt bike and the throttle and transmission are smoother but there is a little less personality with it compared to the MT
@@bradenyznbrgr9397 ummm, I've had heaps of bikes. my experience with kawasaki is they tend to make everything a top end screamer. yamaha have pulled back and made a triple. more torquey - got it. not sure what I'd pick out of these 2???
Owned a 2014 MT09 from new and loved it. Bought a Z900 performance in 2019 and love it too. I can not pick one from the other, both awesome bikes. I also own a Ducati Monster 1200 which is a totally different bike which I love for different reasons. Great review keep them coming.
That’s awesome! Do you have any plans for what you’re getting next?
Thanks for watching and leaving feedback! What two bikes would you like to see compared next?
Whats your opinion of the throttle on the MT-09 vs the Z-900? Is the ride by wire as snatchy as people say, or is it kind of exaggerated? With the power and traction control set basically the same on them, that is.
Bought an MT09 in 2014. Great bike and never thought the fuelling was jerky as per some reports. Comfy bike, took it to the Isle of Man a number of times. Great fun bike. I now own a Z900 since 2019. Also a great bike, mine has ABS and no engine modes or other electronic gadgetry. Both great bikes but totally different in many ways. Love them both.
@GregAndr Z900 is heavier but once moving you can not tell. MT09 had better fuel consumption of about 5mpg more than the Z900. Best way is to test ride to see which suits you best, I am sure you will be impressed with both bikes.
@GregAndr I buy my bikes now around the seat height. The MT09 was slightly higher than my Z900. That said my Z900 is 795mm seat height but as you say the new version is possibly 820 ? The MT09 is 825mm but the Tracer 9 has a seat height that lowers to 810mm. You can get the bike lowered as my brother bought an MT09 SP and had that lowered by the dealer.
This versus will be good to update for 21 model year when you get the chance next year. Great comparisons 👍
Good idea, could be a future video!
Thanks for watching 🙌🏻
I happen to own 2018 kawasaki z900 and a 2020 yamaha Mt09 and I love both bikes. But for every day city riding I enjoy the yammi a bit more. Both bikes are great. I'm lucky I can enjoy both.
Nothing beats the sound of a Kawasaki. I like the Z900 all day! 😎
Kawasaki for the win 😆😆 Mt09 is nice bike but z900 is better in nearly every way! Good review
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
Not fair because mt09 849cc z900 948cc
nah, old MT09 is more fun to ride and the new 2021 09 makes even the new Z900 looks like a dynosaur. I dont like the look of 2021 tho.
@@muazazyze7183 well maybe they shouldn’t make a smaller cc bike cost more. Yamaha won my heart but my z900 stole it
@@muazazyze7183 cc don't matter 998cc can make 300+ hp
Great video, you provided the information everyone wants and you printed it on the upper left hand corner. Thanks. I know what I want to buy now
No problem! I know how frustrated I got when researching for bikes with a lack of proper info so doing my best to change that 👍🏻
Thanks for watching and leaving feedback!
Let me know if there’s any other bike comparisons you’d like to see 👌🏻
The best thing to do is to actually sit on both of them. They both have a completely different feel when you sit in them. The Z has this amazing ‘sit into the bike feel’ like you are part of the bike where as the MT feels more like a motor cross bike feel where you are sitting on top of the bike. They are both amazing naked bikes but for myself I feel the Z has an amazing feel and more comfortable.
MT-09 MI LOVE 😘😊
I chose the Mt09 as my second bike and I’ve got no regrets so far. The engine and the torque makes it a winner even if I also own a Kawasaki 650 as a first bike
I’m looking for my second bike and I currently have a Suzuki sfv650 gladius. I’ve been looking more at the Japanese bikes since I do a lot of riding and need something dependable. I also see that Suzuki came out with a redesigned gsx-1000 that looks really good.
@@keltecdan good choice !
What was your first bike?
Kwak for the win definitely. Change the exhaust & fit a quick shifter = BOSS MODE!
I just bought a 2021 mt09 but I test rode the z900 and I liked them both. I ended up with the Yamaha simply because it was a funner bike to ride and made me smile when I looked at it. The Kawasaki looks good, but there’s just something about it that throws me off. I’ve put 2500 miles on it so far and definitely don’t regret my decision👌
Nice comparo, thx!
I bought my 2019 Z900 in March of ‘19, and never looked back. Cost me $8,700 brand spankin’ new. Pretty good bang for the buck.
I like how he included the price conversion to philippine peso. Nice review by the way.
Thanks for watching
Team Kawi here, in terms of quickshifter... basically all new bikes allow you to upshift without squeezing a clutch...
I own an mt09 but I vote for the z900, just can't get over that smooth throttle
My geared up Z900 will smoke an MT09, atleast to 145 MPH. I put 17/40 sprocket setup and killed my 5th and 6th gear. Still, I enjoy the longer shift patterns and it doesn't rare up anymore unless I ask it to. 👍
I currently own the 2020 z650 and love it...but if I do upgrade obviously the z900 would be my pick
Same! Lol. Been thinking of trading in my 20 *650 for the 900. Haha
I went from the Z650, to Z900. Love both bikes, but the Z900 i supurb.
Nice review. I've got a 2020 z900 and love it. Very easy ride and fun when you want it to be. I commute and tour. I tried a mt09 but I'd find it a nightmare on long rides, it definitely has it's own personality though and would make a fun city bike.
Thanks for watching! The z900 definitely looks like a great all-rounder. What other bikes have you had before it?
How tall are you?? With foot peg position on the Z900 it doesn’t seem like it’s for people 6ft and taller.
@@justcoolin3384 I'm just under 6 foot 3 and find the position fine. I'm in the UK though and the seat is different to the US so might be why?
Z900 seems better but should really have put a quick shifter on it. Think Id be leaning more towards mt09 because of the looks
Think they both look great! Thanks for watching and leaving a reply 🙏🏻
Jesus ! Quick shiters 😭 not fucking again ! most are only up shift 🤸 and you can change up " just as quick with out the the Crutch🤣
@@gazakelly9266 quickshifter was around $150 on mt09 and it is a lot faster than clutchless shifting.
I like the sound of Z900, the style and everything! In Europe is more expensive, but no choice 😊
Looking forward to seeing this same comparison for the 2021 models please do it 👍👍
Be interesting compared to the new mt09 coming out. Lighter bike and more power 🤔
@@minicopilot1 and it has an aluminum frame where the z is steel, im leaning towards the mt09 as well, looking forward to the local shop getting one

Also liked it when you mentioned Yammie Noob. :)
Way to go buddy. Cheers from India! Stay safe!

@@Kwackajack Hey, glad to read from you bro :)
My suggestion to next compare would be:
Ninja 300 Vs RE Continental GT 650(Not the Interceptor 650) for the entry level.
Benelli 600i Vs CBR 650f for the mid level.

I like both but more Yamaha mt07 and mt09 because Kawasaki looks like every other sport bike! Yamaha ☝☝☝
Kwaka all day everyday
Currently ride a z650 and will be upgrading to a z900 in a few years 🤩
Nice!
How tall are you?? Which one in your opinion would be more comfortable for a 6ft tall rider?
Yamaha is really stepping it up with the all new redesigned MT-09 for 2021. Finally the SP model will be available in the US!
That front end is horrid though... I’ll take the Z.
@@LifeOfParc Horrid is a little strong. I remember people didn't like the current front end when it debuted. It will grow on us. Besides, I don't have to look at it while I'm riding.
For design, i will choose mt09
And mt09 very torque bike..
But top end will be z900
I own a 2019 Z900 and I love it.
I prefer the Kawasaki z900 naked bike
The fact you are coming from a NINJA 400 POV deserves a thumbs up from me. We’re the same my brother
Z900 all the way! Honestly the mt09 looks and sounds better but that's about the only upside to it. And It really isnt expensive to add a quick shifter system to the z900 and it comes with that beautiful dash. I will be most likely be trading my 2020 Ninja 400 for one next spring!
That would be a great update! I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about the z900 as an upgrade for myself too. Which colour scheme would you go for?
@@Kwackajack I'll probably try to find the all black z900!
Great choice, they really do look good don't they. Do you have any other bikes on the watchlist or do you have your heart set on the z900?
@@Kwackajack I'm pretty open minded I suppose! I do love my ninja 400, but I'm already growing out of it(need more go go juice lol) and slowly realizing I'm not much of a full fairing kind of guy lol. I have pretty much fallen in love with the z900
Similar situation, while I could live with the 400 for a long time, the draw of a bigger bike is strong I’m sure will eventually win out. That’s fair, well I think you’ve chosen wisely
Interesting to see that you’ve included the prices in India where Z900 rules this segment..
My vote goes to Z which offers the best VFM in this segment.. Even though I’m not a fan of Sugomi styling, I prefer the looks of Z900 to those of MT and Duke 790/890.
Can’t forget my friends in India! I know I have a few motorcycle loving subscriber friends there so I make sure to include their prices too!
Fair enough, it’s really down to preference. I think overall I prefer the Z aswell but the mt is definitely a great package

Definitely the MT-09

Love z900 but mt lokk damm🖤
Just brought one of these mt09’s looking forward to smashing the hinterland soon 😜
Fuck yea, what colour did you go for? I’ll keep an eye out for ya
Kwackajack I picked up a 2016 from manheim. That Matt grey/silver color. Akro exhaust, sounds mint. Be on the road when I get back next week. Will catch up on the road one day . I have MT07 MT09 Roadking cholo style and a quick as fuck little v-rod at my disposal . I like them all 😜

Must need a stable for all those horses 🐎
Kwackajack I’d have a lot more if I didn’t have to register them all 😂
Good vids, keep up the good work. Ps The MT07 that lives here isn’t mine but it is fun to ride
My vote z900. Inline 4 is pure love
Overall specs and performance, I picked Kawasaki Z900
Both look great. Very well polished. But I'm not a fan of a naked design and small headlight.
Both great bikes. Why I went MT-09: I like the look and "completely other-worldly" feel better. Yamaha's got their 3cyl game down, and the 09 is so nimble it almost feels like a dirt bike - the flick is incredible. As for the dash, the MT-09's is small, but there comes a point when the dash on some bikes get so large it gets into "grandma" territory. And in my personal view there are only two motorcycle brands with quality control that guarantees you will never EVER be left stranded - Yamaha and Honda. And Kawasaki ain't one of them.
That's odd, I thought kawasaki's thing they were known for was reliability. Am I misinformed?
@@RussSchampers Kawasaki is ok, but Honda and Yamaha are definitely more reliable machines.
Owned an MT07 and loved it, Rode the MT09 and liked it, Good fun bike but seem to sit on it almost as has been said,. like a dirt bike, Works for some. I was comparing the both before buying and I now own the 2020 z900 ( in black with red decals ) Have so far only put 3,000 klm on her but love her to bits! got a Yoshi can on her and waiting for header pipes to be delivered, Will be doing a fitting and review vid in the next couple of weeks. I am 100% happy and got the right bike for me but though in a lot of ways they are so different they still would be on the same isle in a shopping center so it just comes down to personal choice, As human as we are we will never all agree on the best of the two as there is no best of, Both great bikes but my preference is the Z900 all day long.
Also does the quickshifter come standard on the non Sp version of the MT09 now? thought it was only on the Sp but memory could be failing me? Also are you in Vic? roads looks familiar?
Nice vid though, Thanks
Where’s the review vid mate
I think the mt-09 just has more character and that sound is undeniably better.
I love Kawa to bits and literally have posters scattered in my room. But. The MT 09 is just more exciting for me. And that triple sound is incomparable. So unique so grunty not like a typical inline 4
For sure, killer engine
i love yamaha.. but kawasaki 2020 is better buy.. stability on high speed bigger bike smooth power dilivery.. but mt09 is tourqe king to much for me .. great bikes
I knew I recognised those roads, you're a gold coast local too

mt 09 with the sounds
Like any motorcycle, they require an aftermarket pipe for a true sound.
Have you ridden both?
So if I want to ride wildly sort of like a dirt bike and go “legal” speeds buy the mt-09?
Awesome bikes
Reliability, which is better?
Thanks for this video. I've been dreaming of an upgrade for my MT-07 (not that it needs one, really), both are excellent bikes and has power and torque that you'll rarely use on the street. I choose the Z coz of it's looks and dash. In black please. ;)
Happy to help! To be honest I think anyone would be more than happy with either of these bikes, it just comes down to personal preference. Keep me up to date with if you ever do upgrade!
MT 4 me
MT09SP A great looking bike
Kawasaki z900 I just never liked much Yamaha, Kawasaki bikes are just rock solid simple as that it does not matter which model!!!! All the same quality standards, the best!!!!
Great video,😀 I like the look of the Z900 but the sound of the MT-09 😉
Yep, both will sound a LOT better with an aftermarket exhaust on them though. So if you had to choose which one would you take?
@@Kwackajack Yeah the Kawasaki, nice features and display 👍
I own the 2019 z900 and hit 265kmph with ease and had a lot more room to go. Wonder where they got their numbers
There was a lot of conflicting numbers when I did my research, but I went with the most official looking source I could find!
Awesome to know it can do a lot faster though, thanks for pointing that out 🙏🏻
Can't really say which is preferable. Like the fact that the MT 09 is considerably lighter, but love the fact that the Kawasaki has such a buttery smooth throttle. Also, that lighter weight of the MT 09 is partly due to its having an aluminum frame. But aluminum is weak relative to steel,,,,& the Kawasaki has a steel frame. So maybe the Kawasaki's extra weight is justified.👀🤔🥸

Hell yea! Congrats mate
Is z900 come with optional quick shifter?
I don’t ride or own a bike. I chose both in my garage… if i had any money I’ll buy one of those
Good evening, friends!
It's very interesting that no one is talking about how the two bikes respond to acceleration.
MT-09 is an unfinished motorcycle: very poor control, dangerously cheap suspension and aggressive engine breaks.
ECU-flash fix only partially the first problem: better air-fuel ratio, better dynamic, but the snatchy acceleration remains.
Acquisition of real suspensions from K-Tech fix completely the second problem.
And finally the install of a 2 teeth less rear sprocket it lengthened the transmission ratios and reduced the violence of the engine brake.
All in all I'm tired of spending money and work trying to fix an engine that Yamaha forgot to finish.
It's a shame because the MT-09 could have been one of the best engines ever.
Would you recommend either as a first bike/daily bike? I have dirt bike experience and I’m looking into my first road legal bike
Tough to say on that one, if you've got previous experience I'd say yea they could make a good daily bike. But if it's only been dirt bikes just take it easy. Perhaps take one for a test ride to get an idea?
Was that some footage of the Tweed valley?
Close! My on-bike footage was shot in the Tallebudgera Valley which is my go-to when it comes to reviewing bikes. Would love to explore more of tweed valley once borders open up again properly

I know the new mt-09 sp has cruise control. I don’t think the base model has it stock though.
Actually looking at buying mt 09
Middle weights used to be the 650, now its 900cc three cylinder beasts.. jeesh
Yep, crazy hey
Did i miss the seat hight comparison? That's a big issue with most people
I owned a 2015 FZ 09 in the US. I found it nearly unrideable at 105 kilos as the bike was undersprung and mushy.. I replaced the rear shock with a Stoltec unit which was much better. The front suspension was harsh but it too was undersprung for my weight. I replaced the bars and the front brake master cylinder and lever from an R1 and steel braided front lines which made the front brake pretty good. I found the seat very uncomfortable as it jammed my nuts into the tank being tipped forward. I did what I could to raise the front of the seat and cushioning which helped but it was never comfortable. After $2500in aftermarket I quit and sold it. Great motor and great handling bike with the right suspension setup but I didn’t love it overall. I am 6’ 2” tall, 110-115 kilos in gear with a 33” inseam and long arms. Can anyone speak to wwhether the Z900 is any roomier than the FZ?
I am 5 foot 8 and I fit well on the mt-09 but I felt cramped on the z900 because the foot positioning but also had difficulty touching the ground because of the wider seat.
Nice review, thanks Kwackajack. I would love to see this review again with the 2021 MT 09 with new dash full IMU and improved handling through new chassis. Also are you able to comment on suspension and handling. In NZ the MT 09 is cheaper and the Z900 costs about the same as the MT 09SP. So certainly hard to put it ahead. Both bikes are high on my list for a trade up anytime soon. Also the Street Triple R. A possibility is the bargain priced GXS S750. Comments?
Peoples think mt-09 is a torque monster but it’s not it only wheelie than much because Yamaha made it with the nose raised up on front and the ass lower so like this basically \ the kawasaki is more like a strait line --- and as more torque and hp but yamaha weight 50 pounds less... oh and have a shitty suspension too
I've always been curious about the MT-09. I'd prefer the triple over the inline 4.
Mt 09 lover like comment ❤️🤟🤟
I have a z900 and I love it , but I’ve always had a soft spot for the mt09 and prefer the looks . I’ve never rode one though but the reason I picked the z900 is because the mt09 was too much to insure , they wanted 2k
For me, the winner is... the KTM-1290r !
Inline 4 for life...
Z900 beat the mt10 In a drag test. So mt09 forget it...in uk the kawazaki is cheaper than the mt09.
No brainer..

Hahaha, well I am called KWACKAjack after all.. Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed! You're right, both great bikes. Video comparing the Z1000 and MT-10 will be up on Friday!
@@Kwackajack i didn’t mean to be rude, but I’ve noticed straight away you like mt09 😉
