Rescuing The Cheapest FC3S RX7 Turbo II From Its Grave | Part 4

- I thought cleaning the fuel tank in the RX7 was going to be easy. But after a few attempts and the results coming out less than satisfactory, Lady Luck must have been looking out for me. By chance I looked on the local RX7 page and someone posted that a car just was released at the local U-Pull yard. After a short 30min drive and a few bolts the tank was out of the car and still smelled like good fuel and there was not a spot of rust to be found!!!
After the fuel tank situation I went onto the next problem the interior which could have been much worse. After a vacuum then a shampoo and then another vacuum again the interior was much cleaner. The interior no longer smells like an old car but like a clean load of laundry.
I am extremely surprised how well the car runs it sounds like it has good compression in both rotor housings and it doesn't smoke. I can not wait to drive this JDM beauty for the first time in the next episode!!!

U should change all the fluids, oil, trans, diff and brakes!! 👍👍
I second this. At least a fluid change and brakes.
Pretty sure he will 🤣
I'm not a big RX-7 or rotary fan, but I do enjoy automotive recovery series like this one. Great work so far; looking forward to seeing this project progress.
Dave you are truly the best on You tube, your technical, clear and intelligent. I Enjoy watching, hopefully we will see the wildcat soon completed.
Thanks I appreciate it
You give me inspiration to finish my 88 turbo 2. It sat for 12 years and pretty much the same stuff as yours. Needs a feul pump, slave cylinder, coolant lines.
do it
I love the cult classic FC3S RX-7 congrats on resurrecting a true legend!
I also rescued RX-7 from Graveyard.
A car sleeping in a humid mountain. After that, replace the tires to complete. I like your channel.
you will find that those seats are among the best and most comfortable ,supportive seats ever...provided their foam is still intact...these were one of the high points of my 86 rx7 turbo..ive never had another car that had seats as good....the worst seats ive ever had were on the 82 supra..those recaro lookalikes were pure pain.
Good job Dave. I had a Turbo II RX7 years ago. It was an awesome car and I really miss it.
I am completely obsessed with this video series. Just stumbled onto your channel. I recently acquired an 88 n/a that was a buddy of mines who passed away. It’s an amazing story but I’ll spare you for now. I’ll be getting it back on the road after about 10 years of sitting as well. I’ll definitely be referencing these videos. Thank you for all the hard work it took to film. I wish I could share pictures. Until next time!
I just bought a 89 240sx that’s been sitting since 07 and this has been helping me so much!!!
My parts guy goes by Junkyard Dave; I got real excited thought he has started a youtube video. Ended up staying and watching the whole thing anyways. Hell yeah man!
Nice progress Dave !! She's coming along nicely ... I noticed while it was idling and revving, there was hardly any smoke coming from the exhaust , so that's a big plus too ...
yeah I am surprised how clean it idles
Nice work, Dave. I enjoy seeing these cars get a second chance at life after years of neglect. I have a 1990 Lincoln Town Car that I would like to get to work on. Has 26K original miles but has unfortunately sat for far longer than it was ever ran. Keep up the good work!
@Robert McGuire It's actually a 5.0... they didn't switch over to the 4.6 until 94, I think.
@Robert McGuire Yeah I love the car and desperately want to get it restored. I've had countless people want to buy the car for the motor and transmission... and they want to scrap the car and I'm just like, nah, I'll let it rust into the ground before I start parting the car out... lol.
Best build series currently on UA-cam
Hell yeah thanks
I love this build, keep the uploads going 👌
always enjoy the updates on the FC. not sure what your final plans are, but i love how you treat the FC with utmost respect. keep up the great work and great vids. totally love the series of videos
@12:15 Cigarette tar or Cannabis tar, maybe both. That is possible the plastics/rubber were "Off-gassing", like you said.
I throw 3 vented-cloth boxes of baking soda in my vehicles. 1 box under each seat, and 1 box in the trunk area.
The RX-7 looks great, all cleaned up. I am the same way. I would not feel that I could relax and listen in to the engine sounds or enjoy driving it, if it was all dirty. All I would think about would be the smell and the mess.
Its hard to drive a car when you have to take a shower after driving it lol
for a moment i thought he was going to scream "she's alive, she's alive (laughing maniacally), great revival man.
I sold my Turbo II not too long ago and I miss it! Love seeing these videos! Can’t wait for more! 👍
I forgot to mention on a previous video that you should get a Mazda OEM thermostat. The parts store thermostats don't have the bypass on them. Glad to see her running!
I still have dreams about my old Turbo II. Such iconic cars.
You should make Amazon links in the description of all the cleaners and supplies you use. It would be another way for us to support the channel and use products that work.
I do sometimes
Hanging for every new video. Nice find, nice work and keep the video's coming
Hell Yeah
Nice going!
Your doing pretty good as-is with the idle, even if the ACV is gone. S4 and S5 both have WAY overly complex idle control systems, from the idle thermal kicker to the BAC (which compensates for P/S and A/C loads), the throttle speed screw and the accel warm up solenoid, and outputs from the TPS,MAF and O2 (when its warm). 86 and early 87's even have trim control screws for the injector to get the idle mix juuuuust right. EFI just hadn't progressed enough to simplify this all down, until about the 90's when it started to more resemble what we have today. Even with everything as OEM perfect as I could get and the simpler S5 EFI system, my idle still fluctuates as the engine warms up. Takes about 5 minutes until the base idle kicks in and she'll purr at 800rpm.
Yeah my FD idles at 1100 I might machine the throttle body so a gm iccv fits in so I can get the lope
Duuuude You saved her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Man! Cheers!
Cool. I remember those from being a kid in the eighties. Seems like those and the toyotas like Celicas that came with a red interior almost looked like a faded shade even when they were new.
If you want a cheap way to freshen up the interior on some of the faded surfaces, the duplicolor vinyl and fabric dye works well. I wouldn't use it on seats but I had luck with it changing the color of my carpet and panels.
Can’t wait to see what’s in store for this thing man! Killer job bringing it back to life!
That interior looks a thousand times better.
I really enjoy the resurrection process. You're a wizard Harry.
Haha thanks
im enjoying a lot this fc content! i cant wait to see this car finished
Also i absolutely love to think this car is being loved after 10 years
Wow the garden hose on cloth seats in the car, hehe sweet, well now you know what FC stands for, Flooded Crotch. Not saying it didn't need to be done, I just would have never done it, but hell that's why my interior is still sitting in storage waiting for me to finish my project after two years. lol keep it up fun video.
It doesn't hurt anything as long as you let it air out which is easy in a desert climate with 0-10% humidity
Great to hear it running. You did a good job on the interior. Well done saving this car.. Top man --
From CO?!?!?! hell yeah man! excited to see this build and maybe come out and see it in person some time.
If I can find a radiator I think Im going to try to drive it to that Miata meet going to Estes park
I had a turbo II which i bypass the emissions. For the car to idle right the TPS have to be manually adjusted. I can't remember well but if my memory serve me well you can use a Ometer or a Mazda tool with a light to adjust it to factory specs. Try checking the idle control valve first. Also the water pipe that goes from the block (or rotor plate) to the intake will bring hot water to a little piston on by the throttle body, and the piston will expand or contract changing your preset idle speed according to the temperature of the coolant. I pretty much had to use the book to get those things in order. Also i try capping the little emission pipes behind the intake but they keep poping off even with i use tiny metal clamps. Every time they pop off the car idle will stall. The solution was to shot them close using a vise grip pliers and fold a 180 bent to ensure they don't leak. After those bugs where work out, my Turbo II idle normal. I almost forgot. I had to make with pluming PVC pipe, a temporary by pass for the intecooler so i can adjust the TPS. I had to do it because the intercooler was on the way for all the adjustments.
Now that you've got the engine running, I can't wait to see where you decide to take the rest of the build. Keep up the good work.
I had a white one of these back in the 90's . I really enjoy you videos.
I love this! Just bought an fc as my first car, and this is teaching me alot
Great build! Keep up the good work! Looking forward to more uploads on this build!
It is almost a whole car again! Great job man. Really lucked out on that fuel tank. I'm pumped to see it drive!
Great job getting it running again! I'm going to be getting 1 of the 2 going soon that I still have out of 4 I've owned all 2nd gens love them!
Pls dont stop recording this, Its so awesome to watch :D
You and your damn forgotten rags! Haha jk but love the vids man, this series is pretty damn interesting I can't wait to see the first drive!
knew you would do it dave,,,,, wont be long before you are on the paintwork
that thing runs like a champ. im actually looking at an fc thats been sitting for the past 2 years so hopefully it turns out good
Hopefully u keep it. It would be cool if u fix it up and make it look nice. I love this body style rx7. Great job on making it run again
You did a great job making the car come back to life
talk about a night & day difference after that interior cleaning! she's coming along nicely! I see she burned off the oil you added before the first start. I was worried at first at how much it was smoking
CAT's make good smoke shows of oil
these videos makes me wish i never sold my first gen. really wish i knew what i had before i sold it
Dude, love watching these vids!! It. Would have been cool to see the doner car you got fuel tank from... Anyway looking forward to seeing part 5!!
I was going to but then I kept thinking that it was going to start raining
Let's hope the weather is good for the next time around!!!
Love seeing this build. Keep it up !! Dorito life 🔥🚗💨
Make sure you run some 2stroke pre mix in her I heard rotary guys recommend it to extend the life of the apex seals.
yeah that's the word
Those 9 band graphic equalizers are the coolest things ever
Great set of videos! Keep it going.
sounds great! the only thing i would say is please take a razor to that old tint. the car looks so good until you look at the glass.
hey Dave just subscribed I'm an OG Motion Auto and I really like your work an you help Trevor out a lot. good guy keep up the good work
thanks man
Love this resurrection! Good job, Dave.
Maybe you can find another better seat and a new dash, very nice this FC is getting much better 👍
I would like to find a full black interior to swap in
Hey Dave you should get some aerospace 303 protectant for all your plastic and rubber parts. it works great for keeping everything uv protected and lasting much longer without getting dry or cracked n such
Gonna put all these in a playlist so I know what to do when I get an FC myself
It might be a good idea lol
Please video tape all the old fluids coming out 👍. Great video👍
You should flock all the interior parts. That would hide the cracks pretty nice 👍🏼
I would if they didn't turn to dust when touching some of them haha
I'm so happy that there are people like you, that are rescuing great cars like these from being destroyed and forgotten. Also I have a question, after everything else will be done, are you going to put a stock spoiler on this FC, or you're gonna keep it without a wing, like it is right now?
If I can find one I want to put a wing on it, the car looks like it is missing something without one
POR15 fuel tank kit and some chain does a nice job getting the gunk out.
Amazing progress and very detailed work. Awesome videos
enjoying this series heapsss
I haven't been this hype for a notification since the B is for build days of the evora
Thats a long time lol, hell yeah
Just subscribed to your channel. I like your video style, it's laid back. Good luck with the RX7!
Never last ; ) ~ "Pushing cars sucks." JD...absolutely.
I'm loving the series man.Contiune doing it :)
Junkyard Dave style 😎 I like it. Keep do what you want do Dave ☺️.
thanks, that D-spec haha get Tommy all riled up
😎😉
Well done Dave. It sounds great
Awesome. Make that thing look like new. Make it look factory new, but with better performance. Please do not rice the car, don't add stupid body kits and bags and crap. They're truly beautiful cars, make it look like new again.
Vids have got so much better. And supper informative.
I’m sure it would be happy if it got a healthy dose of premix for the first couple drives since it’s been sitting for so long. Great video!!!!
always premix
I ended up replacing mine to after many many attempts on the old one. Just be carfull between S4 and S5 as they had a capacity difference which I found out in my build... luckily the guy I got the tank from had the straps for it
Come on part 5!! I’m ready for so much more!!!
I love the work that you've gone to to sort of resurrect this car. One thing about those seats: I don't know, but I'd guess that you could swap the driver-side with the passenger side without much problem. Maybe just straight across. It would hide that bolster wear by putting it on the passenger side and on the "inside" of the car. Anyone here know if they can be swapped easily?
Hey man, grats on getting the braces removed, looking good ma dude! Loving the rotary videos mate 👌
Thanks
Wow I have always loved the RX 7
Yes! She finally runs, it started up fairly easy
I had to have my tank pressure washed professionally with some kind of acid when I was getting my Supra going after sitting for 8+ years. It sure was worth it!
Love your videos definitely need more of all your builds keep up the good work👍🏻
hell yeah
She's ALIVE.!!!
nice clean soldering trick, no one ever taught me that :)
It’s hilarious, it’s just like deja vu! I literally had to do everything just like this on mine. Keep up the good work!
Good work dude. Enjoying this content!
enjoying this build just try to remove the tint so when u do drive it u can actually see alot better than that old tint. its easy to remove with stream
Scrap the windows clean Eighties paint that shit might buff out. Rip it a new arshole might chirp insecond bro lol Love it Please don't forget the chev power car either missing that like the Dodge.
Your lucky, all the Pick N Pull places around here punch the fuel tanks to drain them.....guess they figure its faster than pulling them to drain the fuel, since most cars don't have drains like RX's.
I was very surprised
Good work Dave! Nice video!
thanks
Sup Dave and the rx7 is is off the hook and I like old school models like this cool
You very lucky you found that other tank, because it sounded like you were about to make a big mistake. You never add water to acid, you always add acid to water, unless you trying to make an explosion, then add the water to the acid.
nice! i really like this car, what a great story
Just a suggestion you might want to pull any parts you might need off of the. other rx7 at the pull a part junk yard before lkq crushes it.
There wasn't much on there that would help me, if it had a back interior I would have jumped on that or good tails
That is shaping up to be a great resto!
Nice work dude! That RX's going to Rock man!
I had two non-turbo FC RX-7 GXL's years ago. I prefer the GXL's wheels.
Good work Dave, your rotors are my fav cars. 3000GT next?
