    In this video I discuss helpful tips when thinking about training a medication reminder or medication alert and a medication retrieve for your service dog. This service dog task can be useful for a variety of disabilities including various psychiatric service dogs (MDD, ADHD, PTSD etc.) as well as diabetic alert dogs, and any other disabilities that require medication either at a particular time every day or during a medical event. The reminder can be taught separately and used to help you remember things like eating, taking a walk, taking a shower etc. The medication retrieve can also be taught as a separate task.

    I want to teach the reminder, and possibly retrieve. I am terrible at taking meds. I avoid taking them, and put it off. It would be helpful to train my dog to be insistent with reminders, and retrieve if I’m not getting up to get it.

    I have an app that will incessantly remind me so much that I'll take them to shut it off. Though this could still be helpful when it comes to retrieval, though I'd have to take them out of the metal pencil case in order to let him pick it up.

He doesnt eat in public: wont even take a treat from me, keeps attention to me(and my mother who i think hes worried will fall) staying close even when the lead is dropped, has barely any prey drive, and keeping my six...

    Well, I need another source of reminder . NOt only remind me to take meds , but remind me that i have to get to an appointment . notes, calendars around the house as well as calendars on my phone and in the tasks list .. just IS NOT working. Would something like this be possible? I live with chronic post Tbi symptoms. After 20 year since my car accident and 4 years after major set back that came on during the pandemic. Today I am finally having to accept my reality .. I have not wanted to give into until this last major health set back. On the bright side > I now for the first time have my very own personalized team of 8 TBI specialists. I do not currently have a Service Dog. But am considering it .

    Hi Laura, you are by far my favorite UA-cam dog trainer without a doubt. I relate to you, you put things in a nice clear concise order and you go over what could potentially be a problem. All the trainers that I watch, they bring their dog out and the dog does everything perfectly so you don't learn anything. It's nice to watch somebody have an extremely gifted dog that can do everything perfectly but beside that it's of NO HELP at all. So I want to become a patreon and I don't know where would I view the videos do I have to go on Facebook? Which I don't like using. Here is my situation Laura I am training my second service dog he's a miniature schnauzer mix and stubborn as any dog I have ever trained. And because I'm disabled with chronic illnesses and severe pain it's extremely hard for me to train him on everything I'd like to train him on. I do not have that capacity anymore at all. So I pick my battles. Along with my physical disabilities I also have complex PTSD. He does wonderful at getting on top of me laying on my back or across my tummy. He also will pick up ANYTHING and bring it to me. I am so proud of this little guy. He comes when called but I don't care if he's sits perfect. I care about what I need and the rest I am loose about. You once gave me the name of a SD Trainers site. I can't afford anything like that.
    So how does Patreon work? Thanks so much Laura!!

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  Рік тому +1

      Hi Kavita!
      You would not need to go on facebook to use the Patreon platform. You can find it at Patreon.com/DoggyU. Patreon is not designed to be personalized training (though I do have one elite level where you can submit video for review) but instead a resource of private videos that I don't show publicly that you can use to train your SD. I also do a once a month Q&A via Zoom where "Crew" and higher level members can submit a question for that month and I'll answer it live during the Q&A.
      You can search topics under the "tag" function to find the resources you're looking for. For instance, if you wanted to learn about a topic like training a "hold" you would type in hold and the video on reverse luring would pop up. I post new videos a few times a month with different exercises to work on on your own.
      So overall it functions not as a private trainer, but as a resource and community of other people also interested in owner-training their service dogs. Everything is self-contained on the Patreon website or app. Hope that helps!

      @@DoggyU thank you so much Laura!! Do you go over what to do if the dog does the desired request wrong? That way I can learn. I'd Love to see how you correct unwanted behaviors. If you do I'll definitely join. Thanks🐾🐾

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  Рік тому

      @@kavitadeva the type of training I do doesn't rely on telling the dog they are doing it wrong, but rather showing them how to do it right and proofing them against all distractions in which they will come across. So I don't have a video on what to do if they "do it wrong" but I have lots of examples of training where I don't get the desired result or over-face my dog and then pivot my plan so I can better train them to fluency. Positive reinforcement is all about teaching them what TO do instead of what not to do.

    • @kavitadeva
      @kavitadeva Рік тому

      @@DoggyU hi Laura. I knew when I wrote doing it wrong I was not using the proper way of explaining the question. I understand PRT is what you just explained. Thanks for re- explaining the actual process
      You and your dogs are doing together. I do understand it. I guess I meant if you don't get the desired outcome will you show how to restart the task and show how to get the dog back on track to succeed. Too many trainers show very little of how to restart the action desired when the pup is not doing it "right". I hope that makes sense. Again thanks. Can you stop patreon if you want to down the line?

      @@DoggyU Hi Laura thanks for the back and forth. I left a reply to this reply.
      Not because of the $ am I wondering about patreon.
      In the past I shared with you that I was a dog trainer many many years ago and back then there was no such thing as positive reinforcement training. I also told you in our recent conversation that I am training my second service dog who is 2 years old and he is a miniature schnauzer mix what I want to know is, is it possible to have a phone consultation with you and I can pay you by debit card over the phone?? I really need and would like to be able to talk to you about what I am doing and where I may be completely opposite of what you would say. knowing myself I just think it would be a very helpful benefit and then I could start patreon and learn the best way to utilize the platform. If this interests you and you would like to have a phone consultation like I said I'm willing to pay you I just want to know how would we go about it. Please leave a reply of where I can email you or give you my phone number or whatever you want to do. Thank you so much this means the world to me as my disabilities are getting worse and my chronic illnesses are getting worse and my energy that I have is limited in me giving my dog all I could give him. Yes. Wanting to train this behavior. I am like you apparently (yeah I hear you alarm...). I was wondering what you think of this little gadget (goodestboi Treat Bag for Dog Training on Amazon). Saw some service dog trainer comments--some people just continute to use it. It would work in my house but not sure re: elsewhere. And I. like the idea of two different cues. However, I don't know what I could use as an alert---I have seizures and was advised to train a touching a nose to my knee for seizures. I'm not a fond of pawing, unless it is functional for some reason.

      Hi Jay! Haven't seen that product before you posted, but that could definitely work as a retrieval item (and for training)! As far as alerts, there are many different ways to alert. I actually talk specifically about all the types of alerts that are possible in my January live Q&A (you aren't the only one looking for other alerting options!) but chin rest, spin, or similar behavior could work. You can check out that livestream though at Patreon.com/DoggyU if you're looking for more ideas.

    Thank you for such helpful tips!! Following your advice, I was able to train my dog to retrieve my emergency medications on command.
    The only aspect we are struggling with now is proofing the behavior. When there are distractions like lots of people around, other dogs, or his food, then he has trouble staying on task and bringing my meds. Do you have any advice for how to teach him that my "get meds" command has higher importance than *anything* else (e.g. person knocking on front door, his dinner being served, or a family member calling him)?
    I'm having trouble finding a way for him to learn that he must hand me my meds before any other task.
    Thank you so much for any tips!

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  Рік тому

      You definitely have to increase the difficulty level very slowly as those things you mention are HARD distractions. I would also wonder if you have a strategy right now to train around open food containers and other distractions that you use regularly in your training?
      Are you a member of the DOGGY•U Community? I have a video on there showing how I teach a call-away (recall) from actively eating food using Premack Principle which I think would be helpful as you start to proof around difficult distractions. There's also a few videos on the clamshell game which is a great game for teaching your dog a default "leave-it" around food which will allow you to train around higher level distractions as you progress your training, like open food containers. Those two things will help with strategies to proof behavior. You can join for $3 at patreon.com/doggyu. If you're already a member just search "Call Off Food: Premack Principle & Recall Proofing Exercise" and Clamshell game.
      If you join at the "Inner Circle" level, I also have a special topics video from March talking about proofing around more difficult distractions and using the idea of "expect the unexpected" to get better results in your training. Hope that helps!

    Also, I trained a chin rest early and she just looooves it. 😂 Also, DPT. Sometimes I think she wants to be in my skin and I’m not mad in the least. 🤣😂🤣
    I have a new problem that requires me to take medications at meals (specifically with my first bite of food). It’s not related to my disability, but also really important, and I’m not sure how to help her discern how to remind me. I’m most likely to forget when I’m not at home or really tired. Would love to hear your thoughts on this as it’s a medication I’ll have to take for the rest of my life. 😢

      Hi Alyna!
      I'm so glad you're finding my videos helpful!
      It sounds like you'd be a great candidate to join the DOGGY•U Community! I posted a video last week outlining my training plan for medication reminder and retrieve that you will likely find helpful as you work to teach that to your SD. You'll also be able to follow along as I train CoolWhip for this behavior. You can join at Patreon.com/DoggyU. Hope to see you there!

    My focus would be a medication retrieval. I don’t need the reminder.

      Definitely check out my three part retrieve series over on Patreon for Inner Circle and above members. That should give you solid guidance on how to train a solid retrieve :)

    Hey there, just wanted to let you know there is a constant buzz through out the entire video

      Hi Kate,
      I am aware of the buzzing and I tried to mitigate it in post but unfortunately I am not an audio engineer, just a dog trainer, and this is a one-woman-show over here. I decided to publish it anyway because I thought the content was relevant to those that would be interested, and those that needed this type of free resource would still be able to watch it.
      Best,
      Laura

      Sorry you feel that way, Kim. We have a great community over on the DOGGY•U Patreon, and they're the ones that make all these free videos possible ;)

    I was going to only do retrieve until I saw this video so I will have to be doing both ❤❤❤❤

      Just be sure to train a solid retrieve first on other items before introducing the med retrieve

    Is it possible to talk slower?

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  Рік тому +1

      Hi Little Running Deer - I am not able to talk slower. I have ADHD and when I force myself to talk slower I loose my train of thought. However, you can modify my speed by clicking on the settings (little gear button) and putting it at 75%. You could also turn on closed captioning or check out a transcript of the video. Hope that helps!
      Best,
