yeah youtube keeps setting videos I watch to 480p by default despite my internet and computer being able to handle higher qualities just fine, so I didn't even notice lol. there isn't much of a difference, so I don't really care about the quality being slightly lower.

Kinda-ish, his species is older that anything the Usurper(s) brought to Teyvat
(spoilers) well since hes the REINCARNATION of the hydro sovereign, he is technically older but he doesnt have all the memories that he had in his previous incarnation, but if we count both of them then hes basically as old as teyvat itself as (correct me if im wrong) the hydro sovereign was the first sovereign and the heart of the primoridal sea (which all orginally-teyvat lifeforms originate from) which should mean hes older than all life on teyvat.

I literally got goosebumps throughout the trailer, Something about Neuvillette just screams he is powerful yet mysterious
he is powerful but there is something that he has to sacrifice in the past to get that powerful, or he sacrifices something in exchange for his power.
SPOILERS
Neuvillette is the reincarnation of the original Hydro Sovereign, the Sovereigns being the 7 Vishap(Dragon) gods before the archons. They were defeated by Celestia when the primordial one arrived, and all either died or hid away at the bottom of the Oceans. Then, we learn in Enkanomiya that the hydro Sovereign indeed died at the hands of the Primordial one, and that there are two options for a dead sovereign. If he is "pure", he is reborn as a vishap, and if he is impure, will take on a human form, but with the longevity of a regular sovereign(really fucking long time). Thus, the Hydro dragon was reborn as Neuvillette. This puts his age into perspective, as Orobashi died 2000 years ago, when the people of Enkanomiya came to Watatsumi, and he was already afraid of the Hydro Sovereign before.
As such, we can estimate Neuvillette to be anywhere between 7000 (Death of the hydro Sovereign) and 2000(death of Orobashi, the people of Enkanomiya already knew the Hydro Sovereign had returned) years old.
My personal theory is that just like an Archon is chosen immediately after the previous one dies, EG Rhukadevata and Nahida, the Sovereigns are reborn immediately after their death.
Overall an amazing backstory for an amazing character, thank you for attending my ted talk.
Edit: the sadness is probably his reminiscence to the time before the primordial one, during the age of the Sovereigns

Awesome outlook on the music interpretation btw! Everything about this demo felt so different to a lot of the others and given this mans’ lore, we’re dealing with a whole new breed here, and I’m here for it! You’re takes are always so fun and insightful to listen too, especially for me being a slight classical nerd lol
So Neuvilette is one of the most fascinating characters in the story, because he serves as a direct contrast to Furina. It's shown in the video where he sits completely opposite to her in the courtroom. He's the firm, impartial and cold judge, and yet there are moments with him that are just FILLED with emotion. One of the most prominent examples being this myth around Fontaine that is leaning to be actual truth, that whenever it starts raining in Fontaine, it's because NEUVILETTE is crying and in sorrow, which also further solidifies the theory that Neuvilette isn't human because how could he change the weather? Anyway, the point is that Neuvilette appears cold and selfish, but in actuality he's the exact opposite; he's selfless. Because while he passes judgement with the understanding that justice needs to be served, he carries the consequences of his judgement, especially the sorrow like whether he passed the right judgement or even how that judgement has affected the people. It serves as a great contrast to Furina, who carries this idea of justice being a show of theatrics where people spout nonsense after nonsense until something else happens. She looks like she's performing FOR the people, but she's completely and utterly selfish. She gets angry at Lyney's trial not because she might've sentenced an innocent man to jail, but because SHE feels humiliated. She cries because SHE feels incompetent. She cries because SHE'LL be left alone. She represents this idea that justice is meaningless and selfish, which is kind of paradoxical because she's supposed to be the God of Justice? And yet justice is meaningless?? That's why she has such a dull presence when pitted against Neuvilette; she could NEVER even hope to beat him, and yet she continues to spout nonsense because that's all she knows how to do, while Neuvilette just carries on because he knows there's more important things to focus on than her.
The contrast of what they find important and how they choose to present themselves is just GENIUS.
It's because of this contrast that there's a really strong and reasonable argument that Neuvilette embodies the idea of the God of Justice more than Furina ever does. There's even this little tidbit in support of this when you play the game. There's this particular detail that's only exclusive to the Archons. Whenever they do their Q, which is their ultimate attack, their hair glows for a moment. And we see with Neuvilette that his hair accessories do the EXACT SAME THING when you hit his Q. So your theory on Neuvilette being the Gnosis itself honestly might not be far off base. I don't think he'd die if it was removed, but he definitely is connected to it and Furina because he has these aspects of 'godliness' to him.
The other thing too is that other than venti and zhongli, none of the current archons really chose to be in the positions they're in as archons. Nahida is a weird case since she's a reincarnated being of one of the original seven but Ei, Furina, the Tsaritsa , etc are all people who were turned archon by no choice of their own. When looked at it like that it explains *alot* about Furina's struggle.
I'll do my best not to spoil anything that's *true*, but I will debunk your thought about Neuvilette being the Gnosis. As far as anyone seems to be concerned, he's not. Whether or not that's actually accurate or not is still in the air, but as far as we can be certain according to various sources in the game, he's not the Archon. Then again, we all know that Genshin likes to misdirect.

There is also this phenomenon based on his voicelines that the unnatural times of raining is his sad emotions and normal rain still does fall regularly. The allusion in his voicelines is that because of his sadness happening too frequently for natural rain to fall, there’s very very few times when he can just enjoy the rain as normal rain and not when he’s in a bad mood which probably tells the player how often it “unnaturally rains” than naturally.
I love how you are able to get the gist of the demo through the music alone. It's a testament to the thought put behind the it fir every character and every moment.

Everytime I watch your videos on Genshin music I am amazed by how accurate you are able to describe a character just by listening to their theme.
You're very right when you said he's not a human.
The Opera Epiclese is interesting in that it serves as a triumvirate of functions. In game, it is described as Opera and Court House. But in many ways, it also serves as a Church. The Justice system itself is the religion of Fontaine.
As someone who has played the new archon quest and Neuvillettes story quest, your original comments before you watched the video were frighteningly accurate..
Very pleased that Hoyoverse is promoting 17th-19th century Western European Culture: Baroque music is so underappreciated in modern day society and media. Neuvillette's theme melody gives massive calls to Beethoven's Pathetique - melody is Romantic, but the structure and the instruments are still Baroque. You can tell that the music producers behind Hoyoverse really put in all in this one.

Dear Marco, you helped me solve a question that I’ve been thinking about all day! When I looked at the character's demo, I had a distinct feeling that something was wrong. The atmosphere was too serious, too dark, as if Nevilette was created not for Genshin, but for Honkai (where characters are killed, as far as I know). There was a lot of pressure in the video, like a psychological thriller. But I didn’t realize right away that this demo, unlike the others, was focused on the hero’s past. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Wow I wasn't expecting Marco to say Neuvillette as the Gnosis himself, either an embodiment or holding it within himself....wow, that's a very interesting theory. I wil start playing the story to see what happens.
it is interesting because the Gnosis originated from the Seven Dragon Sovereigns
@dopzkentoy yes. I just played the archon quest, and to my surprise the Gnosis is the elemental authority that once belonged to the sovereign dragons of Teyvat. That pretty much confirms that both Neuvillette and the Gnosis are connected since he needs it in order to restore his full power as the Sovereign Dragon of Water.

neuvillette’s lv 90 ascension voiceline actually kinda seems to imply that he has (re)claimed possession of the gnosis - at least that is one very plausible way of interpreting it

Love your interpretation of this demo - Neuvillette is fave character of mine and I also love this demo (probably as much as Zhongli's demo). It was incredible to listen to your expoerience put into understanding emotion behind music and character!! Every time I listen to this music I feel so emotional, almost like Neuvillette is sharing his emotion (and also emotions of others that resonate with him) with us.

15:04 well he is, in fact probably the first. He’s most likely an elemental dragon in human form. This is not hidden to the player. The interesting thing is that the rain correlates with the dragon crying.

You kept mentioning sadness regarding his theme, which now that I think of it actually translates well in-game-- iirc I think it was either Navia or Elphane (while riding towards Epiclese) who mentioned it was mostly raining there. Considering Neuvi's lore (the things he says in his trailer, or during the AQ), while others consider each case to be a form of entertainment, I think he moreso sees the conflict and the struggle. And although the people lauded his unbiased nature, making them think he was a cold person, he actually isn't- he isn't immune to feeling pain or sad or regret, which I think is actually what he does feel if, again, the rain is any indication (and all that talk reg Navia's father). I suggest you give a watch to the character teaser as well if you're interested, it kinda works as a short intro to the demo and helps piece more things about his character together.
I just returned from a trip to Lucca and while I was there I attended one of the Puccini e la sua Lucca performances in the Church of San Giovanni. It’s the first time I’ve heard live opera in person and I have an all new appreciation for it thanks to your channel, Marco! Cried all the way through it, haha. The part where there is a cello and chorus reminds me of Once Upon a December from Anastasia. It actually invokes the same feeling of loss and sadness.
I really appreaciate your knowledge, the way you get what's happening in the trailer without even watching it yet through music is just admirable, when you were listening to the chinese version and talked about deepness and complexity of Neuvillete character, and then that exact thing being literally showned to us in the underwater scene and how he is very reflexive during the entire demo. I feel like the start of the demo is like- people's interpretation of Neuvillette? As the fierce and absolute Chief Justice. Like what we see from the outset.

It's so funny that you got everything almost 100% correct on the music alone, but the english version was way more misleading in comprehension of the TRUE meaning of things. I'd love to see you playing through Fontaine's archon quest and Neuvillette's story quest.

ooo what an interesting theory that Neuvilette is the Gnosis itself personified. I haven't seen that one yet. Everyone seems convinced only that he is the ancient elemental hydro dragon. I haven't done his story quest yet so maybe I'm missing some canon explanations but I really enjoy that theory for what it is!

Neuvillette is actually very close to being a god, so your predictions are not far off! In fact, Neuvillette is more ancient and powerful than any of the other gods we've encountered so far in game. Perhaps that's why his music has this sense of power and holiness and a sort of ominous tone that the archon themes more or less lack.
I know it's completely different but it reminds me of "Lost in thoughts, all alone" in Fire emblem if/ Fates😮 same "water-y" and sad vibes

But regarding him as a person trough music, I agree, Neuvillette has that omnipitent, wise persona that everyone will respect and adore him as the Neutral party. The influence he projects can't be judged by anyone but just accepted of how great and mighty it is.

The way performance VA and express emotions fits more than English as well the immersion it's much higher
I simply loved this trailer, and it's the first one where I like the english VA more than the japanese one.
Neuvillette is such a deep character. I don't know who he is, your theory is that he is the gnosis is interesting, but that would mean the Fatui would want to kill him which would be kinda gruesome for Genshin standards. Well, on the other hand, with the Fontaine archon quest in 4.0 they quite stepped up the game so it may not be entirely out of the question.
Some say he could be the hydro dragon, I hope it's not the case because it means they're copying Blizzard, who introduced dragons that can shape as humans in WoW.
Two things are certain to me: he is not human, and I think he's the only one who really knows the truth about that legend of all people of Fontaine turning into water and Furina weeping alone.
Speaking about gnosis, I hope this time the traveler gets one, you know, kinda like in the original Dragonball where all the clashes between the search parties happen when one party has some balls and the other has the rest.
That would ramp up the clash with the fatui, though. The way I see it, the Tsaritsa isn't really seeing the traveler as a threat. Sure he ruined several Fatui plans and operations, but in the end all the gnosis acquisitions went smoothly, and the traveler failed to protect them, and there was barely any sacrifice from the Fatui's part aside from Signora (but then again, the Tsaritsa seems to have a war mind, and in war casualties happen).
Genshin already had a dragon in human form in Zhongli (he may not exactly be a dragon, but close enough). Azhdaha also sort of had human form in the quest. And there’s been a bunch of other stories I’ve read with humanoid dragons. Don’t think they’d be copying Blizzard.
@@KayKayBayForeverZhongli isn't "exactly" a Dragon, he's not a dragon at all: it is implied that archons (or at least Venti and Zhongli) can assume whatever form they want. The serpentine dragon one he faked his death with is just the one people of Liyue knew best.
Azhdaha's "human form" I don't remember but anyway it was a projection of his mind rather than a shapeshift (his real body is still buried, the giant tree being his tail).
Neuvillette being a dragon, like Dvalin or Apep, would be a first in Genshin.
@@AcaciaAvenue I get that, I wasn’t meaning they were literally dragons in human forms. I just don’t think it would be suddenly a “Genshin is copying Blizzard!” situation, when Genshin has already had things similar to humanoid dragons, Neuvillette wouldn’t be a big step away from that. (Also, as I mentioned, all the other stories with humanoid dragons.)

Sorry, if that'll sound meticuloisly, but dont mix together dragons like Dvalin and Azhdaha with Apep. Though, in the eyes of people of Teyvat all of them are "elemental dragons", Apep is on another level of existence so to say. Apep is one of THE Elemental dragons, 7 Sovereigns who lived in Teyvat before The Primordial One came and killed their king and created humans in Teyvat. For dragons like Apep, Dvalin and Azhdaha are a not true dragons.
So, yeah, Neuvillette is most probably a reincarnation of a Hydro Sovereign

@@fyhwcu well from what I've read it is really uncertain if he is or not, since the titles like "dragon king" or "dragon lord" is not exclusive to Sovereigns only.
So as of right now at the moment with all information available to us, Im more thinking of his title as "dragon king" as King of Geovishaps. He may be as ancient as Sovereigns and at the time as powerfull, but until there is more evidence that he is or was a Sovereign Im not really counting him.

@@akvirr7102 Im sorry, but that is what Sovereign means. Seven Sovereigns are original and the strongest elemental dragons. Out of all dragons that we know of, Apep is 100% for sure is a Sovereign, a dendro dragon. Others are reincarnated Neuvillete and Nibelung, Dragon King, the one who, Apep told us, acquired the forbidden knowledge and led other dragons against the Primordial One.

Your videos are precise, your thoughts are deep and sentimental. You know music, you love music, that's clear, but sometimes you're too much. I dont like the way you do it, because of the structure of the videos. Stoping every 10 seconds, and analyze. It makes it impossible to enjoy our favorite (or first experienced) music.
How about, if we listening the music first? With soft reactions, like facial expressions, emotions, etc. You know, like avarage reaction channels. Then we listen again, with your current structure, with hard analysis.

Neuvillete demo is one of my least favorites, cause it's very interrupted, music was great but it didn't felt like a singular piece.
I highly prefer when the music flows towards the entire demo and changes naturally
Theyve started going with cinematic pieces that fit the visuals for five stars and leave the continuous pieces to the four stars. This has pretty much been a trend since somewhere in sumeru I think
In fact, I think neuvillettes actually is one of the better ones because his leitmotif still comes through so strongly while a lot of recent demo themes havent been able to leave an impression on me due to the discontinuity overpowering the motif

I actually preferred the version update, well, version of his theme. the buildup feels a bit more raw and better timed with the character's animations

I can remember Lynette and Freminets themes on will but I have trouble recalling Lyneys sometimes, though i made sure to watch each of them 3 times to be fair. Same with Baizhus, his entire theme is very quiet until the burst portion. (Although I do like it)

3:10 I think in Neuvillette's case, organ means authority. In the cutscene where Childe fights in the court, at first it was Childe's theme in this loud rock-n-roll style (which is appropriate since he's literally rebelling against the court) but after Neuvillete one-shots him, everything settles leaving only the organs playing, creating the sense of oppression. It's a reminder of the power and authority of Neuvillette, of the court, and of Fontaine's justice system by extension.
I think this might also explain the trope you mentioned where organs in video games are often associated with evil. In real life authority is neutral by default, however in video games, authority is very often the opposition, it's part of the videogame culture and its history. Born from the hacker culture in an academic setting, stayed on the fringes of society as a niche form of entertainment, and once it entered the mainstream it was quickly scapegoated for many social problems, causing controversies even to this day. Distrust of the authorities is in video games' DNA, and what speaks authority louder than church music.
Neuvillette is one of the most interesting characters in my opinion. Being both this impartial and cold judge yet also so centered around emotion. He feels very human, which is somewhat ironic considering his lore.
It's not like he doesn't feel emtions or doesn't want to, he simply can't express what he feels, it's the typical "I want to scream but i don't have a mouth" scenario, i think the fact alone that he cries before every single time he has to Judge someone proves that more then enough

You might be onto something there. What's called Gnosis in English is called 神之心 in Chinese (literally 'heart of God').
It's pretty much believed that the Gnoses are the remaining hearts or essences of the Seven Sovereigns (elemental dragon kings, essentially).
That said, Neuvillette is likely not the original Hydro Sovereign, but it is very possible he retains strong ties with the Gnosis-holder
I won't spoil it here, but the end of the Archon quest that just came out DOES fully reveal his relationship in regards to this and gives a lot more insight into him. Something to look forward to!

Neuvillette is actually more like lawful neutral, who aligns with the law and principle. He actually has a heart which is aligned with good, but he prioritizes his duty as the iudex than his personal emotions.
This is why I watch this channel.
Me, someone who is not ''musically savvy", I'm always impressed but how much you are able to get just by the music alone, including your past videos when you barely knew this game.
I suppose it also shows that those in charge of the music direction at Hoyoverse knows what they are doing.

I genuinely love these videos. I feel like I learn so much from Marco and I've never been much of a musically involved person; never took any extracurriculars in it, never really cared to dive into learning about it on a deeper level. But I've been enthralled with Genshin's story and characters for a while now and in my desire to learn more about this silly little gacha game, I'm surprised to find just how much talent and thought goes into every aspect of the game's world building, including the music. I've only been able to realize some of these depths thanks to Marco's analyses and him sharing his expertise with us. His interpretations have really helped bridge the gap in my knowledge and really sparked a genuine interest in me for opera, music, and plays. In his other videos I've heard him mention pieces like "Commedia dell'arte," "Turandot," and "Rigoletto" and even though I've never been inclined to care about this kind of stuff before, he makes me genuinely curious and excited about these topics and I've begun looking into how I could see some of these plays and operas for myself. I've not only gained a greater appreciation for the game's development but also music as a whole thanks to Marco sharing his talent and wisdom and I genuinely hope he gets the recognition he deserves because I haven't seen anyone do it quite like he can.

While I wasn't intending to pull for Neuvillette, I cannot deny that my love of cello pieces is winning me over with this one and am delighted to see your reactions to it! At the very least, it does make me intrigued to learn more about him.
It's slightly less explicit here (more obvious in the verison and teaser trailer) but I adore how reminiscent his leitmotif is to the Emil/Sacrifice and /Despair etc. ones, which is very apt considering both of their stories and similarities you can draw there. Not 1:1 obviously, but still.

One nice thing is that Hoyo-mix releases the music for these trailers for every character released from the last archon to the newest one. Meaning Neuvilette's music, without any of the diagetic sounds of the trailer, should be available within the next few months.
