Seen the short. Man such a magnificent find... Absolutely beautiful just to have the opportunity to be in such untouched location. Fish or no fish totally worth the trip I would hold my head high with a skunk that day any fish is just a bonus.
I’ve hiked a lot in that mountain range, and I agree that’s the bluest lake I’ve been to. It is aptly named. There used to be large cutties in it and the other lake not far from it. It’s a dandy hike to get there. Fortunately even though I’m in my 60s I’m used to the altitude. You guys did great. I enjoyed the video.
I enjoyed this video a lot! That remote high beautifully blue lake…awesome. But even more beautiful were those decent sized brookies at times 9:40 and 11:20… oh my gosh…look those dark vivid colours! And the bite of the first one in that clear water …and the stunning surroundings…wow…what a marvellous fishing trip the two of you had…exploring new places and studying the variations between cutthroats and rainbows that occur up there in that fishing paradise. A bliss of a video.
The most common element that creates such blue water is calcium. It is pretty ubiquitous in CO. This particular color is enhanced by one or a couple other minerals that can really destroy a trout fishery if not together with other minerals, so they are not getting mentioned here. Depth also contributes. Look at Crater Lake Oregon. That water is nearly just H20, but the great depth produces the color. Thanks for posting. This place is gorgeous, as are the fish!
Last month I got to fish Cabresto Lake near Taos, New Mexico. That lake was full of brook trout that looked like the ones in this video. The prettiest fish I’ve ever seen in my life. Can’t wait to get up to Colorado!!
All the times I hiked up high and to never see a lake like that beautiful blue one. I'm curious about the cutthroat, but that beautiful lake, absolutely a Rocky Mountain High. This one just could be my favorite one y'all done. And yes I've fallen to those headaches that aspirin seemed to bounce right off. ..................,but that lake. Thank you! They look like sumthin i was blessed with catchin some years ago and it was called at the time a Golden Trout. @@hardmanfishing cutthroat won’t have that rainbow stripe down the side. When you get those weird mixed qualities of both cut and rainbow it’s a sure sign it’s a cutbow. They are super common in a lot of popular Colorado and Montana streams. I got into a bunch of golden/rainbow hybrid is the Sierras of California this summer. Those get some weird mixes too.
@@hardmanfishingI think it’s a greenback cutbow. It might be a hybrid between a greenback cutthroat and rainbow trout. Best explanation for that unique side stripe pattern.

how do you fish in waters where there is no drift? I have only ever learned on creeks where there is running water. Do you pull the line in kind of like a streamer? or you just let the fly sit out in the water in hopes something will come up?
Beautiful lake, Andrew. It can be hard to catch fish in those lakes because the water is so darned clear. I fished a similar lake near Lake Tahoe years ago. The fish were huge but they could see everything and got spooked too easily. Didn't catch a single fish. 😡
What fabulous waters! But you were smart to retreat down from the high country. Oxygen at sea level is approximately 20.9% of the atmosphere. At 12,000’? Just a tad over 13%. Yeah, big difference. Another great adventure - looking forward to the next!
It is a beautiful lake …. But obviously you don’t hike the high country in Colorado much . Try going above Durango , Silverton , Steamboat Springs and Leadville just name a few . Not only breathtaking views , but unexpectedly huge fish .
Give me 2 weeks and I'll post a video at a lake where there wasn't a fish under 16 inches! Just because every video doesn't have huge fish doesn't mean we aren't experienced

There just isn't big trout up high in CO. Also altitude sickness is real and bad. You need to acclimate your self to the elevation. So many come from the flat lands, go up in the mtns. and end up sick.
I'd probably harvest a few if I were you. It's obvious there isn't size or very good numbers and it probably gets fished next to none which is why there's not many fish. Harvest a few in hopes of more and bigger trout.
I honestly think that they were recently put in there. The numbers weren't high, the fish seemed to be small but all generally the same size, and they were concentrated at certain areas. Also the only report I saw said it was going to be brookies. So I think at some point in the last 5 years they killed the brookies and stocked those cutties in there
It would take anyone less than 15 minutes to identify the lake via what's available on the internet and what was shown in the video. There's no need for the location to be posted here.

It was a cuttbow or a cutthroat. We aren't entirely sure.

Nope! There weren't any other fisherman. But there were A LOT of other hikers that went up to the lake just to see it.

These particular fish were likely stocked, but lots of high alpine lakes have native trout
High mountain lakes are often stocked by airplane.

That first fish looks like a cutthroat to me...
That was cutbow for the first fish... they look very similar to a redband rainbow on the west coast....
