They left out the best part of the story, the day after he pitched the no hitter he showed up to the park thinking he was going to pitch. He didnt even remember doing it and had to be told by a groundskeeper "No Doc, you pitched yesterday. You threw a no hitter!"
It's been shown to be true. Dock Ellis was at a friend house and, being the starting pitcher, took the previous day off. That day was a blur since he was woken up saying "you pitch today."
I'm reminded of "not remembering" a big deal in my own life. One time I took a trip from home in the U.S. to Paris, with friends and my girlfriend. Landing in Paris, I was very tired (had maybe one sleep) and I was extremely disoriented. My GF's birthday was that day, and upon exiting customs we unexpectedly met my GF's sister, there as a birthday surprise. .I had such serious sleep confusion, I thought the following: (1) Her sister lives in the US, so we must also be in the US. We must be at JFK, our return airport. (2) I don't remember the whole trip from falling asleep enroute to Paris to this surprise moment in JFK. (3) Oh, my God. I don't remember the trip. I have no recollection. My trip is forgetten forever. I just took a trip to Paris and it's like I never went! I was distraught, as I not only forgot a whole trip but clearly I had a serious neurological problem. This went for about 15-60 seconds (I have no idea, really). Then I finally really came to my senses. woke up. Then I spilled coffee all over my one-day old brightly-colored running shoes. I can't imagine how many memories were lost due to LSD.
In a 1976 book, he said he was drunk on vodka and sobered up on "coffee". Later, he claimed he said vodka and coffee because he was afraid he would upset his current team's owner, George Steinbrenner of the Yankees, if he mentioned the actual substances. So, the story is legitimately questionable. Also, he says he remembers bits and pieces of the game. So, if he did forget the next day it was only temporary. Who knows if its a tall tale, but it's a great tale regardless.
i come to this Video to hear my dads voice, I am so blessed that even with him gone I can still see him and hear him. I love you so much daddy. There is not a day that goes by that I dont think of you, Thank you for this video.
the day after he pitched the no hitter he showed up to the park thinking he was going to pitch. He didnt even remember doing it and had to be told by a groundskeeper "No Doc, you pitched yesterday. You threw a no hitter!"
LOL yeah I felt that. I used to do a lot of psychedelic drugs back in my early 20s and I would go to work still fucked up. People knew I was fucked up but they didn't ask me what it was lol.
Your dad didn't believe what? That he threw a no-hitter on LSD? Well, many people still don't believe he did. Apparently some of the details of Dock's version aren't very accurate (for instance, that he arrived at the park just 90 minutes before start time), and some think that he made up the story to make himself a legend.
Mac Lethal Just went to your show Friday, in LA and came across this today, because I had heard Tom Segura talking about the animation of this awesome story I’ve heard, on an old Joe Rogan podcast, which you’ve also been on and I forgot to mention that I’d heard your podcast when I talked to you . And I just bought a Dock Ellis jersey two or three weeks ago. Crazy shit. And I just saw Tom Segura and Christina P Sunday in Irvine! Too many coincidences.

Mrs. Ellis thank you so much for writing. So so happy to hear that you enjoyed this. For me and James who did the animation and Donnell and Neille who recorded the original interview with your husband, that makes us all feel fantastic. We have been in touch with Dock III and I have been trying to reach you as well. I am going to send a private message through youtube with my information as I'd like to be in touch. Thank you again. God bless dock. Most ball players wen they retire they just enjoy life with their millions but this man went to school an became a drug counselor an helped so many people by planting that seed in there head that u can turn ur life around no matter wat. Thank u dock for the inspiration
What did he say as a drug counselor? Must have been something like don't make the same mistakes I did.Don't drop some high grade acid and chase it with speed or you may end up pitching a PERFECT GAME!
I was a big baseball fan (and a kid) living in Pittsburgh in 1970. I want you folks to know that the animator captured the likeness of Doc Ellis, Dave Cash, Pirates manager Danny Murtaugh, and play-by-play announcer Bob Prince with great accuracy. He even got Bob Prince's "magic charm" - the Green Weenie - into this piece. Good work to all involved!

B.J. McFunk Ellis D. was a man who had a moment. Look up Skip Guerin too. Climbed Yosemite Valleys hardest boulder problem at the time in Camp 4, barefoot and on LSD. No one has repeated the problem barefoot since. That was a moment. Exponentially physically more difficult, and with no less subtlely than pitching nine innings.
this is not only one of the most interesting and remarkable achievements in the long history of baseball, it's one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of sports full stop. i'm awed by this story every time i watch or read something about it.
I wish No Mas would make a full movie about Dock. This short film leaves you hungry for more and Dock has a lot more legendary stories like how he threw pitches at Pete Rose and Joe Morgan
Psychedelics, like the ones John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and the Funkadelics used are mind expanding and can produce hyper focus. That's why the Beatles were sooooo in tune.
I think we should give credit to the people themselves not their habits. Jimi Hendrix would have been just as great of a guitarist without psychedelics. Other artists like Frank Zappa avoided psychedelics and made much weirder and more precise music. I like this story, but maybe Dock Ellis was just a really good pitcher.
When I was on LSD I kept murmuring "Dock Ellis" out loud to myself for encouragement, because if Dock Ellis could pitch a no-hitter on acid then I could clean my apartment and do my laundry.
I was at the game as a 9 year old Padre fan, my Dad brought me and my brother. We sat on the first base side on the field level, about 10-15 rows up. All you can say as an adult is...unbelievable.
Dexamil helped me ace my back-to-back college English final and French qualifying exam in 1971. Great for passing tests, not so much fun in the tooth-clenching comedown.
Just watched "No No: A Dockumentary" on Netflix. Amazing, amazing movie. If you enjoyed this I suggest you watch that documentary on Dock, so good. Man, woman or child, you will cry on this one. And for those of you true fans, Ice Cube is producing a film about the late, great Mr. Dock Ellis and his son O'Shea will play the title role.
I watch this video every year. I always recommend it to anyone i talk baseball with. Hilarious and really emotional. When he talks about the drugs helping him deal with the pressure of performing.. that shit hits real deep for me.
As mentioned multiple times in the comments length/intensity of trip depends on dosage, body weight, metablolism, etc... not uncommon for visual effect to last 12 hours and overall 24 hours. He took a second dose the morning of the game. He was trippng. His remorse of not remembering and other aspects... his anecdote rings true.
True! My last trip was strong as fuck...many years ago...I couldn't even eat a pizza slice after I managed to get to friend's house before really starting to trip...lasted 12 hrs...and I didn't score a touchdown either...lol!
I did not know this happened and I'm upset at EVERYONE for not telling me... Reminds me of NHL great Theo Fleury. He'd be high on cocaine for 2-3 days straight. He'd play a game in LA, go to Vegas the next day and spend all night on blow, then play in Phoenix that night. The brain is just crazy -- literally.
I find it hilarious that during this time that there were fangirls at the games that would deal drugs to the players and the players seemed to know who these fangirls were. Even better, 1970 was only the second year that the San Diego Padres existed, and this fangirl had already gained a reputation for dealing drugs to the players. That didn't take very long for her.
Alright so I snuck out one night and took two hits of potent cid (110 mics each) and when i got out my window as i was walking by the garage it was open with my dad standing there looking at me. Told him i was just gonna smoke a cig but he asks to play ping pong. he always kicks my ass, he's ridiculously good, but that night i won 21-10. #acidisthekey
I read somewhere that LSD is a better neurotransmitter than what your body normally creates. So your nerves conduct faster which means your perception is better. I know a guy when he took an acid, he threw Horseshoes and landed each one effortlessly.
One time I took a 8th of shrooms and was asked to participate in beer pong with my friend. And I walked up to the table and I didn’t miss a single shot. And I felt so amazing.

I actually attended this game, being a 15-year old avid baseball player from Chula Vista. Of course, I never suspected any performance enhancing drug was involved. The irony is that the Padres have never pitched a no-hitter, while Ellis, D. had one in our 2nd season of existence.
This is a fantastic animated short. Just fyi, for those who want more Doc: there's a wonderful book Donald Hall (the poet) and Doc collaborated on, titled "Doc Ellis in the Country of Baseball." Came out in the mid-70s, I think. Folks should check it out.
Just watched no no a dockumentary, that was a very interesting show. I knew about the famous no hitter but I had no clue he played many games high. I have no clue how a pro ball player could pull something like that off.
I'm from England so baseball terminology doesn't mean a great deal to me but despite that - this animation is wonderful. I think they should make LSD mandatory for one game a year!
The big thing to take away from this was that he pitched a no-hitter in Major League Baseball. It's a rare event, and is pretty much a dream come true for any professional pitcher. The fact that he managed to do it on LSD, is astonishing.
+designanddirection Long story short, a no-hitter would be equivalent to a football match where one team had zero possession of the ball outside of kickoffs; basically, it's when one baseball team's defense (led by the pitcher) is completely dominating the other team's offense (the batters).
WMFU blog states the following regarding the footage: "It is widely believed no footage of the game exists, however an HBO Documentary crew apparently dug up a black and white copy for Ellis to show to a group of prisoners for a drug counseling session a couple years ago. The footage was missing a few innings but it did include a post-game interview with Dock veering into abstract philosophical rambling - naturally leaving the group of prisoners that viewed it howling."
There are so many records in Major league sports that will never be broken. This one is probably the most unique of them all. No pitcher in modern Baseball will ever accomplish this feat.
I always thought Mr Doc Ellis was dialed into the strike zone - this interview made my error 20× as funny amazing!! Walk in them, bouncing pitches off the turf randomly. This man is my hero
James Blagden's artwork makes this story twice as good, this is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. The style of the art, the sound effects, and the story itself.
this is a video I can come and watch when I need to be having a better day, ty for making it, and God Bless Doc... if he hadn't played baseball, he would've made a fantastic story teller and live personality - but then again, I guess you could say he was all those things anyways!
